Mitt Romney: I Need People Like Donald Trump

50.1%
Politics • Views: 36,805

In possibly the most pathetic illustration yet of the Republican Party’s descent into madness, Mitt Romney says he needs the support of whacked out Birthers like Donald Trump.

“You know, I don’t agree with all the people who support me and my guess is they don’t all agree with everything I believe in,” Romney said. “But I need to get 50.1% or more and I’m appreciative to have the help of a lot of good people.”

Of course Romney needs the birthers. He wants to win and they're the default in the GOP base, not the fringe.

He knows he needs the birther freaks. The day he condemns them or calls them out is the day after he concedes the election to Barack Obama. Won't happen anytime soon.

Like I said yesterday, the explanation the Romney camp gave for not rejecting Trump for being a birther means that there is no standard and anything goes. Pam Gellar, c'mon down. Fred Phelps, we got room for you too! Don Black? We've been waiting for ya!

I think Mitt Rmoney is a creepy, lying, pandering, soulless fraud who lacks any genuine principles or beliefs, but this is not a Rmoney problem. This is a GOP problem. Polls consistently show that the majority of Republicans are birthers. In this case its the party and not just the candidate. A GOP candidate who doesn't embrace birthers would be like a Democratic candidate rejecting people who support reproductive rights. Birtherism is a part of the GOP now. It's an article of faith and while it may (or should cost him) other voters, he can't tell birthers to kiss off. They are the majority of the party. I don't expect the GOP nominee to be any better than his party. I think Barack Obama is very good representation of the mainstream of his party and Rmoney is trying to be the same thing for his.

MEG WHITMAN HOSTING ROMNEY FUNDRAISER

23 Ogami Itto  Mon, May 28, 2012 8:43:55pm
The former Massachusetts governor's fundraiser is co-chaired by billionaire Meg Whitman, his former employee at Bain Capital and the 2010 Republican candidate for California governor who promised to produce 2 million new jobs if elected. Now Whitman is CEO of Hewlett-Packard, which said last week it plans to lay off 25,000 workers.

Apparently Meg Whitman and Romney have at least one thing in common: they both like firing people.

I only came into GOP ranks after 9/11, I was apolitical prior to then. But you're right, I fooled myself for years, trying to convince myself (with limited success) that the loons were a fringe, that nobody really listened to them.

Then Obama got elected and no amount of self-delusion could make the loons any less visible.

U.S. Citizen Fined for Violation of Russia’s Migration Rules

Migration authorities in the Sakhalin Region in Russia’s Far East have fined a lecturer from the United States over violation of Russia’s migration laws, a regional migration official told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

Kevin Puleo arrived in Russia on May 21 on an invitation by the U.S. Consulate General in Vladivostok to make presentations in Vladivostok and Sakhalin about volunteerism in the United States.

“The decision to issue a fine in the amount of 3,000 rubles (about $100) has been made because of a discrepancy between his [Puleo’s] stated purpose of the visit and his actual activities,” the official said.

According to Sakhalin’s Migration Office, Puleo entered Russia on a tourist visa, which does not allow lecturing or teaching activities. However, the American volunteerism activist gave lectures on the subject at an educational institution in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.

The authorities have also received information about his intent to meet with local opposition leaders to lecture them on civil campaigning techniques.

Puleo is a National Regional Director at Organizing for America (OFA), a community organizing project founded in 2009 to mobilize supporters in favor of U.S. President Barack Obama's legislative priorities.

But... but... I thought Obama was for the communists?

I iz so confused.

I've not noticed it at the frequency which you suggest.

I will say that the flurry of patriotic fluff that surfaces now and again happens fairly often - all during my lifetime that I can remember.

It's probably a universal human theme. Tribalism through symbols, and all that.

Spent all three days of the long weekend doing yardwork/planting. I used over 40 bags of mulch and 6 bags of potting soil/garden soil, removed about 20 yards of landscape fabric and installed 60 yards in another spot, planted 20 tomato plants, 20 mixed chile and sweet pepper plants and 4 planters of mixed flowers (about 10 plants per planter). Next weekend, the landscaper neighbors are going to even out a dip/hill in my front lawn, and clear out all the cut branches/trees and various crap left over from different projects this year.

Now its 1 am and I am tired and sore, and watching "Storage Wars" on the DVR after catching "The Killing" and "Game of Thrones" from last night.

re: #91 WINDUPBIRD DISEASE [S.K.U.M.M.]

He stated it inelegantly, and at the wrong moment, but I do wish on Memorial day we focused more-- the way Biden did-- on the fact that so many are dead, so many are maimed. That starting a war means damaging the fuck out of thousands and thousands of our kids, of teenagers and young twenties kids who will never be the same after the shit they see even if they do come back physically whole.

It'd be nice if instead of getting all upset about whether or not we call them heroes, we gave returning vets better medical care and better re-integration into the work force.

Do I think every dead troop is a hero? Only in the most tenuous of senses. Some of them are just poor bastards standing in the wrong place at the wrong time. Makes me think of the stories from the Battle of the Bulge, when new recruits were getting shoved out into the line with no experience, and they would just stand there straight upright during artillery fire not out of bravery but because they had no clue what to do and they'd get cut down like corn.

We're far too divorced from the cost of war. It really is a dangerous thing. And we glorify it too much. I have no problem in celebrating the bravery and sacrifice of soldiers, but I'd rather just not sacrifice them at all.

I am willing to give these guys the benefit of the doubt when they come claiming benefits for injuries: after all, they did volunteer to serve.

And a lot more of them are surviving than did before due to better battlefield medical care and modern surgery. I am sure that it is cheaper for the Armed Forces to just pay off a life insurance settlement and be shut of it than to have to care for disabled vets for the rest of their lives...

97 Obdicut  Tue, May 29, 2012 3:27:40am

re: #96 Expand Your Ground

Yeah, and more and more of the problems are systemic or brain injury or other really tricky shit.

Care for veterans is part of the cost for wars. If we're not willing to provide for them, we shouldn't have so many wars. We haven't found a war that we had to fight in a damn long time.

Morning Lizards!

Last day of the vacation and it should be busy. After packing the car it's time to head further west a bit to help my brother out with the purchase of a motorcycle (it's his mid-life crisis item).

Then a 7-hour drive back to Philadelphia.

My brother has also been putting out a trap for the raccoons since they've been troublesome. Normally baiting it with peanut butter, but he dropped a freshly laid egg yesterday while collecting them, so he baited the trap with that.

And he discovered this morning that the trap was occupied. By one of the Feline Overlords. With the other two hanging about - and probably laughing.

A Russian journalist is in hospital after being lured out of his home and stabbed 20 times late on Monday night in the latest attack on a member of the press.

Sergei Aslanyan, 46, works for Radio Mayak and spent 10 years as a presenter on Echo Moskvy, Russia's leading liberal radio station.

Police sources said Aslanyan received a call from an unknown number just before midnight, inviting him outside for a chat. After leaving his home in southern Moscow, he was stabbed repeatedly in the chest, neck and arms by a man, or several men, wielding a knife.

[...]

The Izvestiya newspaper suggested the attack could have been linked to a recent radio appearance during which Aslanyan insulted the prophet Muhammad.

re: #101 Obdicut

Putin's guys beat up journalists with some regularity too, don't they?

Depends on who you mean by "Putin's guys". E.g. are Kadyrovites Putin's guys? In a limited sense, yes (he closes eyes to their crimes), and there were quite a lot of murders of journalists in Chechnya. Were those who beat up Oleg Kashin Putin's guys? Well, nobody knows who beat him up, so one can't say. So it is in many other cases of crimes against journalists. So there isn't explicit evidence for, you know, some organized group of thugs who target journalists on Putin's orders. On the other hand the very system created by Putin is quite hostile to honest journalism on all levels, due to corruption and authoritarianism, so while it can't be said that "Putin's guys" beat up some journalist or another (in most cases), being an honest journalist in Putin's Russia is quite dangerous. One could tentatively present this case as one of the other such cases, due to the mere fact that it happened in Russia, but I suggest that this could happen in any country, since it is, after all, motivated by religious fanaticism. What is troubling is that as big a honcho as an imam of the main Russian mosque approves of this crime.

Morning Lizardim. The Memorial Day weekend was every bit as relaxing as I'd intended it to be - which is a good thing, considering the crazy up-and-down weather we had. One day it was 60 degrees and heavy thunderstorms, the next 92 degrees and not a cloud in sight. Today looks to be on the cooler side of things, and clear, which will hopefully continue for a while, as we're good on water for the present.

I see the wingnuts have doubled down on the derp while I was away. Somehow Romney's statement, the subject of this article, strikes me as a note of desperation. He realizes he's borderline unelectable and that he needs every last red cent in order to have a chance of beating the far more personable and, to put it bluntly, more moderate Obama. The "Twitter gulag" nontroversy of their own making from yesterday made me laugh, though.

Earlier some other Russian Islamic leaders wrote a letter to authorities urging to charge Aslanyan for "extremism". So this will be another test case. Will the authorities bow down to religious totalitarians, or will they try to honestly investigate this case? The earlier test case was the attack by Orthodox Christian thugs on the exhibition "Warning, religion!" in Sakharov's Center. Not only the attackers were let scot free, it were the organizers of the exhibition who were sentenced to fines.

My dad has had a terrible couple months with raccoons. We have trapped 3 so far in the last month. I talked to him this morning on the way to work and he said he thought he heard something last night. Guess I will be crawling into the attic again to set another trap after work tonight.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Romney's descent into the fever swamps to curry favor with the birthers is indicative of the deal with the devil that the GOP has made to win back the White House at all possible costs.

The party will align itself with anyone and everyone who could possibly give it a chance to win against Obama. If that means going with the birthers, they'll do it.

It makes you wonder what other groups Romney and the GOP are willing to line up with in order to get to 50.1%.

Actually, we don't have to look all that far. We've got them pushing xenophobes and racists all around the country, and that's aside from the fact that the GOP has thrown facts and logic out the window - they will say and do anything in order to win, rather than doing what's best for the nation.

Screw 'em.

So it occurred to me this morning that we (I) had been convinced that one of the real dangers to the GOP of the long drawn-out primary is that it would leave too little time for the nominee's inevitable lurch toward the center.

Well, the primary has been effectively over for, what? A month or two?

Mitt's talented at, hell his only talent may be flip-flopping on his previous positions. When might we start seeing this inevitable lurch? I sure haven't seen it yet. He's been as severely conservative since the primary ended as he was while it was in progress.

Secret ‘Kill List’ Proves a Test of Obama’s Principles and Will

This was the enemy, served up in the latest chart from the intelligence agencies: 15 Qaeda suspects in Yemen with Western ties. The mug shots and brief biographies resembled a high school yearbook layout. Several were Americans. Two were teenagers, including a girl who looked even younger than her 17 years.
....
“How old are these people?” he asked, according to two officials present. “If they are starting to use children,” he said of Al Qaeda, “we are moving into a whole different phase.”
...
Mr. Obama is the liberal law professor who campaigned against the Iraq war and torture, and then insisted on approving every new name on an expanding “kill list,” poring over terrorist suspects’ biographies on what one official calls the macabre “baseball cards” of an unconventional war.

I don't know if Davis is praising Romney here or not. He teaches a class at my alma mater and he's someone who is respected by both liberals and conservatives alike. When I saw him speak, he called out the Norquist tax pledges as stupid. He was always a member of the moderate wing of the state GOP here. More like John Warner than George Allen. I could be wrong though but Davis doesn't strike me as the kind of guy that would apologize for birtherism.

re: #186 Killgore Trout

The order prohibited the agency from operating detention facilities, closing once and for all the secret overseas “black sites” where interrogators had brutalized terrorist suspects.

“The way this is written, you are going to take us out of the rendition business,” Mr. Rizzo told Gregory B. Craig, Mr. Obama’s White House counsel, referring to the much-criticized practice of grabbing a terrorist suspect abroad and delivering him to another country for interrogation or trial. The problem, Mr. Rizzo explained, was that the C.I.A. sometimes held such suspects for a day or two while awaiting a flight. The order appeared to outlaw that.

Mr. Craig assured him that the new president had no intention of ending rendition — only its abuse, which could lead to American complicity in torture abroad. So a new definition of “detention facility” was inserted, excluding places used to hold people “on a short-term, transitory basis.” Problem solved — and no messy public explanation damped Mr. Obama’s celebration.

Nice.

The U.S.-led NATO force in Afghanistan killed al-Qaida's second-highest leader in the country in an airstrike in eastern Kunar province, the coalition said Tuesday.

Sakhr al-Taifi, also known as Mushtaq and Nasim, was responsible for commanding foreign insurgents in Afghanistan and directing attacks against NATO and Afghan forces, the alliance said.

Some of it depends on softer rhetoric but the ethical and moral issues are still borderline. I can't help but think of someone like Jose Padilla. Bush had him arrested after returning from Pakistan. Today, I'm pretty sure Obama would have decided to just kill him overseas. KSM probably would have also been killed overseas without a trial. I can't really argue that Obama's choice would be morally superior but it attracts less attention and solves the problem. I think it works better.

re: #233 Killgore Trout

There is a bit of a paradox there, on the surface, but it's like this: if a serial killer is caught during the crime and shot (because he resisted arrest, for example), or if he is arrested and safe - there is a difference here too, both for the killer (who is alive rather than dead), and for the society, but it can't be argued that just because the only other option for the killer is being dead, that any sort of abuse of him after the arrest is somehow tolerable ("oh well, the mob castrated him, but at least he is alive!"). In the end, the killer would morally deserve the worst outcome, but the rules prevent this and are there for a reason, and if he got himself killed before the arrest - that may even be for the better.

In the war the nuances can be quite different, but I believe the above analogy works too. Yes, could be that Padilla would have been dead. Moreover, it can be argued he would deserve it. But once you got him, there are limits on what you can do with him. Because the laws are there not only for the sake of the possible "weak side", but also to restrain the "strong side".

Invitations to Scheuer by C-SPAN and others, particularly Fox News Channel, to appear as a guest expert on bin Laden, Islamism and Middle East conflicts seem to violate journalistic emphasis on accuracy and context as well as the requirement of credible sources. During his tenure (1996-1999) as head of the CIA bin Laden unit and as special adviser to the group (2001-2004), it failed to find and eliminate bin Laden. His first post-CIA book, Imperial Hubris, reads much like a former official's "if-only-they'd listened-to-me" self-vindication. As noted historian and columnist Victor Davis Hanson has said, the more audiences heard from Scheuer the less they were impressed, "especially by Scheuer's assertions in interviews that Osama bin Laden shouldn't be identified as a terrorist, and that the Holocaust Museum in Washington was a means to make Americans feel guilty about the Holocaust. ... Scheuer sounds goofier each time he gives an interview." Off-base and bigoted. So why is C-SPAN still interviewing him?

Granted, Scheuer is a crackpot, but citing another partisan crackpot does not exactly help credibility. LOL.

CAMERA was useful at one time. For example, they exposed the fake "Letter to an Anti-Zionist" alleged written by Martin Luther King, Jr. that was being circulated about 10 years ago.

I stopped reading CAMERA and removed them from my blog roll when they started to use spam as a business model.

"Commentary" was also, at one time, a very high-class, hi-falutin intellectual journal, but it has devolved to the level of WeirdNutDaily. Very, very sad.

I think during one of the earlier outrageous outrages it has been established that Soros gives money to Tides not as some blanket sum for all purposes, but for specific purposes. Maybe he was getting Soros' money (without any intent to sponsor an ex-terrorist, of course) but that needs to be proven, not asserted.

re: #276 Learned Mother of Zion

If I understand it correctly, it works like this: you use Skype or some other VoIP service to call police and impersonate some poor chap, claiming that you shot "your wife" or something like that, and giving that chap's address. Under normal circumstances these VoIP calls are untraceable (they probably are, in principle, but one would need some spiffy court orders for that, and even then proxies might have been used, etc.).

Basically that's a prank call (tech-wise, not results-wise) taken to the next level.

And if the state laws are such that felony murder or other manslaughter can't attach, it would seem that this is a situation that would demand legislative changes to bring liability against those that engage in SWATting that results in the death, injury, or personal property damage as a result of law enforcement action (like say a police car crashing and killing pedestrians or other drivers while attempting to respond to the location SWATted). But for the prank call, the death and/or damage would not have occurred.

As for how to deal with Skyping/VOiP and 911 calls, I don't know how they can prevent them (don't know how they can make those calls to 911 more transparent to the 911 so they know whoever is calling is who they say they are and where they are calling from is actually where they're calling from).
