I think Mitt Rmoney is a creepy, lying, pandering, soulless fraud who lacks any genuine principles or beliefs, but this is not a Rmoney problem. This is a GOP problem. Polls consistently show that the majority of Republicans are birthers. In this case its the party and not just the candidate. A GOP candidate who doesn't embrace birthers would be like a Democratic candidate rejecting people who support reproductive rights. Birtherism is a part of the GOP now. It's an article of faith and while it may (or should cost him) other voters, he can't tell birthers to kiss off. They are the majority of the party. I don't expect the GOP nominee to be any better than his party. I think Barack Obama is very good representation of the mainstream of his party and Rmoney is trying to be the same thing for his.

U.S. Citizen Fined for Violation of Russia’s Migration Rules
Migration authorities in the Sakhalin Region in Russia’s Far East have fined a lecturer from the United States over violation of Russia’s migration laws, a regional migration official told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.
Kevin Puleo arrived in Russia on May 21 on an invitation by the U.S. Consulate General in Vladivostok to make presentations in Vladivostok and Sakhalin about volunteerism in the United States.
“The decision to issue a fine in the amount of 3,000 rubles (about $100) has been made because of a discrepancy between his [Puleo’s] stated purpose of the visit and his actual activities,” the official said.
According to Sakhalin’s Migration Office, Puleo entered Russia on a tourist visa, which does not allow lecturing or teaching activities. However, the American volunteerism activist gave lectures on the subject at an educational institution in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
The authorities have also received information about his intent to meet with local opposition leaders to lecture them on civil campaigning techniques.
Puleo is a National Regional Director at Organizing for America (OFA), a community organizing project founded in 2009 to mobilize supporters in favor of U.S. President Barack Obama's legislative priorities.

Spent all three days of the long weekend doing yardwork/planting. I used over 40 bags of mulch and 6 bags of potting soil/garden soil, removed about 20 yards of landscape fabric and installed 60 yards in another spot, planted 20 tomato plants, 20 mixed chile and sweet pepper plants and 4 planters of mixed flowers (about 10 plants per planter). Next weekend, the landscaper neighbors are going to even out a dip/hill in my front lawn, and clear out all the cut branches/trees and various crap left over from different projects this year.
Now its 1 am and I am tired and sore, and watching "Storage Wars" on the DVR after catching "The Killing" and "Game of Thrones" from last night.
Oh, and SWMBO and I caught MIB3 last night. A very full weekend.

He stated it inelegantly, and at the wrong moment, but I do wish on Memorial day we focused more-- the way Biden did-- on the fact that so many are dead, so many are maimed. That starting a war means damaging the fuck out of thousands and thousands of our kids, of teenagers and young twenties kids who will never be the same after the shit they see even if they do come back physically whole.
It'd be nice if instead of getting all upset about whether or not we call them heroes, we gave returning vets better medical care and better re-integration into the work force.
Do I think every dead troop is a hero? Only in the most tenuous of senses. Some of them are just poor bastards standing in the wrong place at the wrong time. Makes me think of the stories from the Battle of the Bulge, when new recruits were getting shoved out into the line with no experience, and they would just stand there straight upright during artillery fire not out of bravery but because they had no clue what to do and they'd get cut down like corn.
We're far too divorced from the cost of war. It really is a dangerous thing. And we glorify it too much. I have no problem in celebrating the bravery and sacrifice of soldiers, but I'd rather just not sacrifice them at all.

Last day of the vacation and it should be busy. After packing the car it's time to head further west a bit to help my brother out with the purchase of a motorcycle (it's his mid-life crisis item).
Then a 7-hour drive back to Philadelphia.
My brother has also been putting out a trap for the raccoons since they've been troublesome. Normally baiting it with peanut butter, but he dropped a freshly laid egg yesterday while collecting them, so he baited the trap with that.
And he discovered this morning that the trap was occupied. By one of the Feline Overlords. With the other two hanging about - and probably laughing.

Depends on who you mean by "Putin's guys". E.g. are Kadyrovites Putin's guys? In a limited sense, yes (he closes eyes to their crimes), and there were quite a lot of murders of journalists in Chechnya. Were those who beat up Oleg Kashin Putin's guys? Well, nobody knows who beat him up, so one can't say. So it is in many other cases of crimes against journalists. So there isn't explicit evidence for, you know, some organized group of thugs who target journalists on Putin's orders. On the other hand the very system created by Putin is quite hostile to honest journalism on all levels, due to corruption and authoritarianism, so while it can't be said that "Putin's guys" beat up some journalist or another (in most cases), being an honest journalist in Putin's Russia is quite dangerous. Morning Lizardim. The Memorial Day weekend was every bit as relaxing as I'd intended it to be - which is a good thing, considering the crazy up-and-down weather we had. One day it was 60 degrees and heavy thunderstorms, the next 92 degrees and not a cloud in sight. Today looks to be on the cooler side of things, and clear, which will hopefully continue for a while, as we're good on water for the present.
I see the wingnuts have doubled down on the derp while I was away. Somehow Romney's statement, the subject of this article, strikes me as a note of desperation. He realizes he's borderline unelectable and that he needs every last red cent in order to have a chance of beating the far more personable and, to put it bluntly, more moderate Obama. The "Twitter gulag" nontroversy of their own making from yesterday made me laugh, though.

My dad has had a terrible couple months with raccoons. We have trapped 3 so far in the last month. I talked to him this morning on the way to work and he said he thought he heard something last night. Guess I will be crawling into the attic again to set another trap after work tonight.

I don't know if Davis is praising Romney here or not. He teaches a class at my alma mater and he's someone who is respected by both liberals and conservatives alike. When I saw him speak, he called out the Norquist tax pledges as stupid. He was always a member of the moderate wing of the state GOP here. More like John Warner than George Allen. I could be wrong though but Davis doesn't strike me as the kind of guy that would apologize for birtherism.

Some of it depends on softer rhetoric but the ethical and moral issues are still borderline. I can't help but think of someone like Jose Padilla. Bush had him arrested after returning from Pakistan. Today, I'm pretty sure Obama would have decided to just kill him overseas. KSM probably would have also been killed overseas without a trial. I can't really argue that Obama's choice would be morally superior but it attracts less attention and solves the problem. I think it works better.

There is a bit of a paradox there, on the surface, but it's like this: if a serial killer is caught during the crime and shot (because he resisted arrest, for example), or if he is arrested and safe - there is a difference here too, both for the killer (who is alive rather than dead), and for the society, but it can't be argued that just because the only other option for the killer is being dead, that any sort of abuse of him after the arrest is somehow tolerable ("oh well, the mob castrated him, but at least he is alive!"). In the end, the killer would morally deserve the worst outcome, but the rules prevent this and are there for a reason, and if he got himself killed before the arrest - that may even be for the better.
In the war the nuances can be quite different, but I believe the above analogy works too. Yes, could be that Padilla would have been dead. Moreover, it can be argued he would deserve it. But once you got him, there are limits on what you can do with him. Because the laws are there not only for the sake of the possible "weak side", but also to restrain the "strong side".

CAMERA was useful at one time. For example, they exposed the fake "Letter to an Anti-Zionist" alleged written by Martin Luther King, Jr. that was being circulated about 10 years ago.
I stopped reading CAMERA and removed them from my blog roll when they started to use spam as a business model.

So claiming that just because Kimberlin's org was getting money from Tides, it has also been getting Soros' money is simply untrue. If I understand it correctly, it works like this: you use Skype or some other VoIP service to call police and impersonate some poor chap, claiming that you shot "your wife" or something like that, and giving that chap's address. Under normal circumstances these VoIP calls are untraceable (they probably are, in principle, but one would need some spiffy court orders for that, and even then proxies might have been used, etc.).
Basically that's a prank call (tech-wise, not results-wise) taken to the next level.
