This has been my thinking for 48 hours. How Obama deals with this decides the election.

It depends on what all needs to be done and what the government can do. I do know if I were Mitt Romney, I'd be buying as much in the way of relief supplies as were available outside the projected impact zone and I'd have them ready to be flown in by helos I'd pay for. Mitt's rich, he ought to use his money to good effect here and show the world he's prepared to put his money where his mouth is.

Romney: Federal Disaster Relief Spending Is 'Immoral'

[Embedded content]

Transcript for full context.

KING: What else, Governor Romney? You've been a chief executive of a state. I was just in Joplin, Missouri. I've been in Mississippi and Louisiana and Tennessee and other communities dealing with whether it's the tornadoes, the flooding, and worse. FEMA is about to run out of money, and there are some people who say do it on a case-by-case basis and some people who say, you know, maybe we're learning a lesson here that the states should take on more of this role. How do you deal with something like that?

ROMNEY: Absolutely. Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that's the right direction. And if you can go even further and send it back to the private sector, that's even better.

Instead of thinking in the federal budget, what we should cut -- we should ask ourselves the opposite question. What should we keep? We should take all of what we're doing at the federal level and say, what are the things we're doing that we don't have to do? And those things we've got to stop doing, because we're borrowing $1.6 trillion more this year than we're taking in. We cannot...

KING: Including disaster relief, though?

ROMNEY: We cannot -- we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we'll all be dead and gone before it's paid off. It makes no sense at all.

Didn't clarify or anything like. He finished this section just as he did in the video.

The storm? It's probably not a game changer but it's not going to make a whole lot of difference. People will lose power. No matter how long it takes to get power restored people will complain that it wasn't faster. I'm sure this is a headache that he'd rather not have right now but people will complain no matter what, Republicans will capitalize on it. I'm not a fan of politicizing natural disasters, injuries, destruction and or death but people will do it it anyways. It won;t make much difference but they'll do it for their own satisfaction.

You didn't answer my question. Why should he do this? Is it a responsibility of the rich to do this, to pitch in monetarily when society is damaged? Is this your view of how economics should be? Or do you purely mean this as a soulless attempt to politically capitalize on this by spending money on people to win the election?

Even if he did do some huge donation, it really should be a donation, don't you think, rather than some overnight competing relief movement?

re: #42 Dark_Falcon

I'm going to downding you every time you malign the Republican party in the manner you just did.

And I'm going to upding anyone who does the same. The Republican party DESERVES to be maligned in such a way. Apparently, you don't like people calling out the party you've chosen to align yourself with for their idiocy and dangerous ideas. Sorry - I know you've been here for quite a while (and one of the primary reasons I was looking forward to getting an account here was to spar with you from time to time) but here's the situation, in a nutshell - you choose to align yourself with a political movement that wishes to redefine rape, that wants to deny women their right to choose what to do with their bodies, that doesn't believe in equal pay for women for equal work, that believes the solution to most problems is "war war war" - and that enjoys constantly tossing out dog whistles because they know it appeals to their base - regardless of the overall damage it does to race relations.

Remember, its the REPUBLICAN PARTY that said the most important thing to do is to ensure Obama is a one term President and proceeded to collude and obfuscate and intercede in order to try to achieve that goal. If a Democrat had said such a thing about a Republican President, there would be shouts of treason from the rooftops. You don't get your 'high horse' on this one - I'm sorry that you don't personally like Barack Obama - oh well, que sera sera. Here's the thing though, when I voted for him (I early voted here in Florida) - I had not just myself in mind, but your unemployed self as well - I care about a lot more than just 'my guy won' - I care about ALL of our fellow Countrymen, even the twisted ones who think that because Obama's got dark skin, he's some sort of pariah.

All the dislike in the world you have for President Obama isn't going to make his winning the election any less of a reality for you come November 7th - so strap in as you've got an ugly four years ahead of you if you can't learn to accept that reality.

I think I'd rather have Romney say that we should respect Obama during this hour of crisis and not attack him while this is going on. Oh, and this would be an excellent time to apologize for his attacks on science and especially on climate scientists, and to disavow the anti-science party position on those. It'd be great if he acknowledged that lives are being saved by climatologists that he and his GOP brethren smear.

“The reason I’m in this race is to help people,” Romney said. “I’m not in this race to slow the rise of the oceans or to heal the planet. I’m in this race to help the American people.”

re: #79 Obdicut

You didn't answer my question. Why should he do this? Is it a responsibility of the rich to do this, to pitch in monetarily when society is damaged? Is this your view of how economics should be? Or do you purely mean this as a soulless attempt to politically capitalize on this by spending money on people to win the election?

Even if he did do some huge donation, it really should be a donation, don't you think, rather than some overnight competing relief movement?

When I said 'should' and 'must', I was referring to electoral necessities. I do, however, believe that those who have the ability to help should be generous in a crisis and their fellow citizens. That has always been my practice, anyways.

Guess this means that a poor state like Mississippi would have to launch and maintain their own weather satellite. Or instead sub it out to a private company. Either way the people of Mississippi would still have to pay for it one way or the other.

Do you really think that Romney should create a competing charity, that that won't seem like the most awful form of grandstanding? It'd almost certainly actually interfere with the preparations that are already underway.

How about Romney gives his full support to the president during this crisis and affirms a commitment to restore science funding cut by the GOP? You know, something meaningful instead of trying to swoop in and be a hero when places like the Red Cross, the Shriners, and of course, the government are already working together to help?

He can make a donation to the Red Cross. They could use it. But I really don't think just buying a bunch of stuff is going to work, unless you're proposing he just turn it over to the government for redistribution.

And while we do tend to give generously to each other, it is simply a fact that it is never enough. That's why we need to restore funding the GOP cut for the sattelite program, for example: we're not going to make that up with subscription programs or charity.

Disaster relief is best done by well-established charities and the government, not somebody doing it for a cynical reason.

It would. Your average voter likes someone who goes beyond party. I think Romney realizes that which is why a lot of his recent ads I've seen try to emphasize bipartisanship. Of course, they also ignore his record number of vetoes as Massachusetts' governor and before it gets pointed out to me that he was a governor of a very Democratic state, that's true but there were Republican governors working with a Dem majority legislature before him. Still makes me laugh to hear Romney lecture the president on not providing leadership while trying to get this voter to forget the fact that his party filibustered Obama along the way many a time.

But the only thing Mitt cares for is Mitt.

That is so obvious.

The only vision he has for America is him as president to feed his smug entitled ego. He doesn't give a shit about anything else or have any sort of plan otherwise - save to help out the folks in his "club."

Yeah, Silver's credentials and statistical prowess are impeccable and his methodologies are open for scrutiny, and yet the only way to attack his review of the election polling season is gin up claims that he's somehow The Ghey?™

Well its worse to be Gay and correct than just correct to most crazy right wingers. The idea that a possibly gay man can nail down the election probabilities better than they can has them doing the typical fingers in the ears 'LA LA LA LA I CANT HEAR YOU' thing they tend to do when reality doesn't jive with their perceptions of it (typically seen through some sort of odd time machine lens that showcases the world circa 1953 or so)

And the bulk of Romney's "charitable" giving has been him tithing to his church; while the Mormon church does pretty good in disaster relief, I don't see that the money that Mitt has given in tithes is true charity.

If you don't mind my asking--if the church doesn't get the funds for disaster relief and humanitarian aid from member contributions, where does it come from?

I agree. That would show how utterly foolish it is to think we should have a society where disaster relief (or health care, etc.) is based rich people's personal whims, on their personal connections and attempts to buy the allegiance of the rest of us, rather than on a shared commitment of all of us to do our fair share to live together in a humane society.

Ah, I finally found the link and watched the video for myself. He said that spending money that we intend to have our grandchildren pay off is immoral.

I'm feeling the same way right now about our PERS problem in Oregon. Instead of raising public sector salaries to match private, they provided VERY generous pension benefits to the state employees (twenty years ago), and now the schools are going bankrupt trying to provide those. In the meantime, the officials who set this up retired a long time ago and don't have to deal with the problem.

We should find a way to pay for disaster relief with our own money, not our grandchildren's.

Yes, I'm going to get downdinged on this, but I've got kids sitting 45 to a classroom.

This guy would be great for "She shouldn't have dressed that way, then! - the Fatty Arbuckle story"

Actually, the case that Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle was a rapist was never strong. He was actually more the victim of "morals thinking" than its beneficiary. I put that as well as I know how a little over two years ago. Palomino's words are in blockquote, my own are in italics:

re: #1109 palomino

The Fatty Arbuckle trial made the public think that Hollywood was one giant non-stop orgy. The newspaper tales of debauchery scandalized the entire industry. The Fatster wasn't convicted, but his career was ruined anyway.

But the critique today is based far more on ideology than personal licentiousness.

In a way, it always has been. Arbuckle first trial ended in a mistrial because of a lady on the jury who later admitted "I always planned to vote guilty no matter what the evidence said." The second jury hung for much the same reason. In both cases, someone thought Arbuckle should be imprisoned because they felt him immoral. He was dragged through repeat trials because of a theocratic mindset that felt that law and morality ought to be closely intertwined.

Sandy is the result of the weak "lead from behind" policies of Obama's failed administration. Instead of going out on an apology tour about Katrina to the nations black communities he should have been standing up to the terrorist hurricanes!

Obama has yet to even propose any legislation for sanctions against countries that support terrorist hurricanes like Cuba, Haiti, and the Bahamas! Ask yourself where do these storms always appear just before attacking our great nation? The answer is always the same, at one or more of these vile hurricane enabling and America hating Island nations. Coincidence? I think not!

How long will Obama seek to cover up the truth? How long will we have to wait this time before he admits what we all already know, that this is nothing less than a foreign sponsored terrorist attack on our great nation!

Under the strong leadership of President Romney we will put an end to this hurricane enabling with swift and overwhelming retaliation against these Caribbean supporters of terrorism. No longer will Americas' children have to lay awake in fear wondering if a hurricane will strike their home. No longer will American families be rent with the grief of losing a loved one to this devastating menace. No longer will Americas' puppies and kittens live under the threat of being abandoned to drown or starve during mass evacuations.

He can buy relief supplies in the form of higher taxes for him and his million/billionaire buddies.

Looking at the declarations, it seems that every single state from North Carolina to Maine has declared a State of Emergency, whether full or partial. I think the only disaster to have done more states was Katrina and its resulant evacuations. That was 46 out of fifty. 4 from direct impacts, the other 42 from being unable to cope with the resultant flood of evacuees.

Right now, we are at 12 states. And it could get to be more than that depending on what it does inland. Remember, some models are showing very heavy winds and rain all the way to Wisconsin.

We had a big old oak tree in our front yard when I was growing up on the North Shore of LI. It was actually two trees forming a V. One day, when I was about 10 or 11, we were all out (except for our dog). A heavy storm moved in, with high gusty winds and a lot of rain. My buddy down the street later told me they heard a crack that sounded like a cannon shot. One of the trees making the V broke like a matchstick about 8 feet off the ground and fell on our house, just missing the chimney by a foot. Penetrated the roof by about 3 feet and knocked the entire house off plumb by several degrees.

No windows broken, none of my mom's knick knacks fell off the shelves and broke. Our poor dog, though, was scared shitless and hid in the basement until we came home. The firemen said they didn't even know we had a dog.

It means a bunch of highrise apartment buildings and office buildings are going to have their parking garages, their laundry rooms and their lobbys full of water. All the big electrical closet thingmajigs will be soaked and have to stay off-line for some time. The underground mall in the subway hub. Subways generally, it'll take days (if not weeks) to get all the water out so the system can service those neighborhoods (higher-elevation parts of the city will probably get service back a few hours after the storm passes.

Roker-Cantore Coverage Scale

Some Local Reporter On National News — All is well, relax
Al Roker — Minor inconvenience, you'll be fine
Jeff Morrow — Better start moving stuff off your porch
Stephanie Abrams — Things are getting serious
Mike Seidel — Uh oh…
Jim Cantore — Prepare your body for the Thunderdome

Where are Cantore and Siedel?

Would like to see the Tigers win one. Not because I am a fan of either team but just because I would like to see the Series go for more then just 4 or 5 games.
