Can anyone point to some national religious groups that will be performing weddings for gays? I want to have those ready for my winger coworker. I’ve already had the argument where he tried to defend by say “we’re heading toward freedom from religion.”

Folk rap

Looks like a strange genre, and sounds unusual, but I realized what it reminds me of:

Laura Marling pulls off the modern version nicely.

In Judaism — Reform and Reconstructionist rabbis will almost all officiate for gay weddings, Orthodox never will, nevereverever, and Conservative leaves it up to each Rabbi (the ones who will, it’s usually only if the couple is long-time members of the congregation.)

So, this just popped up regarding Greece:

Ouch. 60 Euro per day? And the banks not reopening until July 7th? Damn….the vaults must be empty. I feel sorry for the Greeks - this is gonna be a tough damn week for them.

Promise that I have the right to not be bombarded by laws and regulations and restrictions based on /your/ interpretation of your religion’s textbook? Even if - especially if - the textbook’s mine as well?

19 KiTA  Jun 28, 2015 12:23:20pm

Morning, Lizards.

It feels supremely weird to not have a job to go to. I was let go yesterday from the place where Bubblehead II and myself work. Well, past tense in my case.

I’m still kinda in shock about the whole thing. I’m gonna miss that place (although by god I wish I could have gotten on a different shift).

So other than that bit of a downer, this has been an absolutely amazing week. Stupid question, with this SCOTUS ruling, is there any recourse for the bigots? They pretty much gave them no out whatsoever, right? Unless states want to suddenly start renaming Marriage “civil unions” and trying to restrict who can get a civil union — which won’t fly…

Outside of an Amendment (haha) — they’re just going to have to put up with it, right?

I think Marx meant something else - sometimes people have nothing left save for religion. Here is what he wrote:

Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.

In a way, Obama’s analysis was Marxian (not saying “Marxist”).

You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.

And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

re: #26 Nyet

Didn’t know you are Bubblehead’s pal :)

What happened, if I may ask?

That’s a long story. Let me see if I can make it short…

Last year I got moved to Swing shift. Swing shift has a conspiracy nut who believes shit like “Atlantis was sunk by Space Lightning from Venus, which is actually a comet that caused Earth to stop spinning and the floods to happen” (He kept trying to get me to read Immanuel Velikovsky’s book) and a literal Skinhead who once gave me an hour long lecture about the evils of race mixing.

NO ONE wants to work swingshift with these guys. I was literally the only technician who would. Hell, with two exceptions, each and every termination in the 3 years I was there was someone on this shift.

Without getting into too much detail, about 2 months ago the wingnut started bitching about me to management every time I spoke to him. This was right after we got into a shouting match about how me looking up the Green Party meant that I’m a Socialist which meant that I’m a Neo-Nazi (because National Socialist, AMIRITE!!!?>) which means I’m out to destroy America, but he already knew that because I voted for Obama, who is Karl Marx’s nazi protoge or somesuch crap.

This culminated in the wingnut threatening to leave the team because he couldn’t work with me, which turned a verbal warning for doing work that the wingnut had claimed “dibs” on (because that task takes about an hour to do, and looks good on the logs; they like to do it inappropriately so I did it properly before they could) into a formal writeup, which was blatantly retaliatory.

At the same time all this is going on, we have a new Director and all this stuff is hitting his desk, which doesn’t exactly fill him with happy thoughts. A few other instances occur, each one involving the wingnut and I getting into a confrontation, and I’m given an improvement plan and 2 months to finish it.

Apparently 2 months means 2 weeks, because despite making progress which was approved by my supervisor and manager, they decided I wasn’t a “cultural fit” for the company and let me go.

I’ll miss working with most everyone, I actually enjoyed the place, but it was a really toxic, hostile environment, and honestly I should have moved on a year or two ago.

You know what made me LOL & SMH the most over that gay pride/ISIS flag thing yesterday? You see that Arabic part of @Argana79’s tweet? It says:

Da’esh hahahahahahah

That’s 2nd part (هههههه) is all one letter—the soft “h” sound, of which there are two in Arabic—in its beginning, middle and end forms. It has no meaning in Arabic when strung together like that—it’s a transliteration of “hahahahaha”. Also, as some of you already know, Da’esh tends to be used by people who dislike the group. The reporter, since she doesn’t speak Arabic, obviously missed all that and the tweeter let her go ahead and make a fool of herself.

Still, Pawle could’ve paid more attention as the English portion of the tweet was clearly approving (clapping even) for the London Pride ISIS flag. Did that not strike her as odd, or did she assume the tweeter was actually expressing support for ISIS?

Taking a quick peek at @Argana79’s timeline, s/he seems to be progressive, Muslim, and most likely Arab, so there was probably a bit of annoyance at play: “Oh, you’re assuming I’m pro-ISIS and you want to scare monger? Okay then, Baker street.” [Sits back and watches CNN beclown itself in front of millions…]

This guy seems to be confused about our idea regarding guns and police. The police are sanctioned to use force when necessary, because it’s part of their job, and would be reasonably called for in the situation for these two.

The problems come from 1) the police using it in unreasonable situations, and 2) people like the tweeter thinking that they have the same rights to use force as the police do.

Been there. Right now it sucks, but out of that environment you will be happier. Nice to know management likes it some threatening employees. It would only get worse, as you found out. Keep swinging.

I actually liked the management, by the end. They had issues, but my supervisor actually started to understand me and promised a good reference. My manager tried, and outside of taking people asking her questions as a personal attack and a decided aversion to writing things down, she was ok.

The director seemed like a good enough guy, but for all his talk about how I supposedly couldn’t work with anyone, he never did actually, you know, ask anyone if I couldn’t work with anyone. I almost feel like I was being made an example of, but… who knows? It’s entirely possible I was just completely intolerable to work with and I just lack the ability to self-examine myself to tell.

Early on, I gave up a transfer to Information Technology and a ~$10-20k a year raise… on one hand because I didn’t want to risk not getting it and getting sent out to pasture because of it, on the other because I was on a big loyalty kick back then. Kinda wish I had risked it now. Ah well.

Current nebulous plan is to do work from home tech support… somewhere. It’ll keep my rent paid while I get other things in order, like getting my driver’s license.

Breitbart’s hysterical take on the SpaceX failure.
AS SPACEX ROCKET EXPLODES, RUSSIA IS BACK ON TOP IN SPACE FLIGHT

They mention the two other failed resupply missions in recent months but neglect to add that these did not involve SpaceX. One was a Russian Progress mission, the other was the Orbital Sciences Corporation mission that failed at launch.

The comments are hilarious as usual, blaming Obama and the alleged diversion of NASA resources to Muslim outreach and climate research, and championing Russian superiority despite the April failure. Did that put us back on top, if only temporarily?
Freepers have chimed in as usual, with even greater emphasis on the freakazoid Muslim outreach meme.

“Judaism prohibits homosexuality,” one sign read.

This is the reason why I’m wary of statements like “[Specific religion] says [something]”. Whether negative or positive.

Religions “say” what their adherents want them to say, and adherents always have a bunch of different opinions. Just because Judaism has been prohibiting homosexuality for centuries doesn’t mean that it is correct to say that it does now. There are significant branches of Judaism that no longer do.

Breitbart .com has been so insane this week that Patrick Brennan at National Review had to take the site to task for saying Marco Rubio had voted for Trade Promotion Authority without reading it, which as not at all the case.

Shapiro and Co. did not issue a correction on their inaccurate report, instead they wrote a follow-up that said Rubio denied their allegations while sending their flying monkeys to fling poo all over Brennan’s comment thread and attack him, Rubio and NR as RINOs.

Breitbart .com cares nothing for the facts: Their modus operandi is “Attack, attack, and don’t look back.”

I think Marx meant something else - sometimes people have nothing left save for religion. Here is what he wrote:

Painkiller, so to day.

Just getting back to this.

I agree Sergey.

What I meant by the American version of how the Marx quote fits is that we are not a poor society, so the religion ‘opiate/drug’ isn’t normally used as a resort for hope.

American fundies tend to mainline religion and then get stupidly euphoric. Then they act like they are God-like or even God.

It’s like how some people react to actual drugs and get sped up by depressants while others get depressed from speed. Fundies in America get that speed rush instead of the calming down, and then look out.

So what’s the argument? Gays viewing themselves as something other than sinners who deserve God’s eternal wrath is akin to Nazism? You want propaganda assholes? Take a look at old films and the way they describe gays. That’s propaganda. Said it the other day on Facebook but the reason why “Gay pride” exists is because of years of gay people being told they were/are(since this attitude hasn’t disappeared) deviants, sexual predators, beaten up for being gay, etc. So yeah some pride is in order and as a straight man I know that I never have to worry about being threatened because of my sexuality. Gay people have pride because they’re trying to have that same world for them and I welcome that 1000%.

Terrific photos and story, thanks much. I remember a radio interview about twenty years ago with Mr. Kawano, during which the interviewer half-jokingly asked why his own photos were so average and Mr. Kawano’s were so striking, to which he replied that the average person might shoot a roll or two of film at a time, while he’ll shoot hundreds if not thousands of rolls while on assignment, so one or two photos are bound to look better than average. His modesty and sense of humor blew me away, and I’ve never forgotten that.

If any other group especially an Islamic one did that today, they’d be demanding blood but I guess treason is okay when it’s in the name of states rights and slavery.

At the risk of belaboring the obvious, issuing a marriage license is not like performing the ceremony or baking a special cake. I am really tempted though it would be cruel to the parties involved test this by doing it to a heterosexual interracial or inter-religious marriage. Paxton thinks “religious objection” to a marriage is enough and he’s apparently willing to help find counsel for these bigots then let him defend the denying of interracial and inter-religious marriage applications. What a disgrace this guy is. You have every right to believe SSM is wrong but when you have a secular job (county clerk), you need to do your fucking job. The Donald is a sueing!

If there was ever any doubt that his entire campaign for President was a joke, I hope this settles it

That wouldn’t have done it for me, but this sure did:

But he argued that producing his own brand’s clothing in China doesn’t make him hypocritical on outsourcing.

“They’ve manipulated their currency to such a point that it’s impossible for our companies to compete with them,” he said. “It’s very, very hard to have anything in apparel made in this country.”

Trump shared his plan to bomb the oil fields of Iraq to end ISIS’s funding source, and his lack of respect for the Iraqi government in part because of their relationship with Iran.

“I don’t care about the government of Iraq. They’re corrupt. The government of Iraq is totally corrupt,” he said.

But Trump maintains he’s a serious candidate.

The only oil fields Daesh (ISIS) controls are in Syria, though they are fighting over refinery in Iraq. Of course, while we’ve gone after Daesh’s semi-mobile refining plants, we haven’t bombed any actual oil fields. Mostly because destroying an oil field results in both an environmental disaster and to higher prices for gasoline.

Of course, Donald Trump is not the first bombastic asshole who wanted to destroy any oil fields he couldn’t keep. Iraq’s already suffered under one of those.

Texas still has it’s places blacks do not stop at. At the same time, the large metropolitan areas are issuing licenses (it won’t be long in Houston), and business, which really runs things here, will crack down on the Governor, LT. Gov, and AG soon.

I’d love it if the business community which to its credit seems to be on board on this issue ruined the GOP for their anti gay stuff. I mean I realize a lot of the business’s community pro-gay stuff isn’t out of deeply held convictions for gay rights but because of $$$$ but wouldn’t that be the beauty of it at all? After all, so many of these GOPers think Capitalism is just awesome.

Wingnuts want a pick and choose society where certain groups (read conservative Christians like them) get to pick and choose what applies to them. Now the irony is of course if liberals advocated for something like that say in the Defense budget or name another part of government that conservatives want more of, they’d be absolutely furious. You want to believe gay marriage is wrong? Fine, there’s sadly a lot of people in this country who find interracial marriage wrong still but when your opposition to something that is law gets in the way of your job then don’t get involved in that kind of work. I am not enlisted in the armed forces because I don’t want to have to possibly fire a gun at someone down the line but I don’t object to the existence of an armed forces because of my personal objection.

I have been working through an on-line training class. Video to watch first (which actually covers the material nicely). Then the horrible part. A voiced-over PowerPoint presentation that I have to click through slide by slide. The narration is almost word for word from the video, and there is no way to fast forward or skip to the end.

It would be worth it if the review / quiz questions were hard, but a rock with a basic knowledge of the subject (or even the ability to apply common sense) could pass them.

As a former trainer, this hurts.

Sounds good. I got a long plane ride coming up. Maybe I’ll Amazon prime it.

Speaking of the northwest. Has everyone seen some of the high temps in places like Spokane Washington? I think I heard it was supposed to get to 105° there today. 112° in Boise Idaho. Are they even prepared for that kind of heat.

Yeah, we are. It hit (unofficial) 105 here in Twin Falls, Id. A new record. High temps are something we have become used to. The only thing worrying me is that these temps are going to dry out the range lands earlier and increase the likelihood /severity of range fires. Next week should be in the mid 90s

If Christians are the new black, I wish Brother Fischer would send over a couple deacons to mow the front. I’ll give them water, with ice, in a paper cup of course. In a couple hundred years I’ll lose a war so they can go find their own damn water.

Looks like a strange genre, and sounds unusual, but I realized what it reminds me of:

Laura Marling pulls off the modern version nicely.

Yes! I was thinking the same thing.

My inner nitpicker points out that that’s 10:15 PM (EDT) if it’s in August.

Always better just to say “ET” or “PT,” unless you’re in the specific case of Arizona in the summertime.
