A Real Gem From the NPR Music Archives: Mavis Staples, NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

I’ve always loved Mavis from the first time I heard her amazing voice. This set from 2010 really shines, and I’m also super-impressed by guitarist Rick Homstrom’s tasteful, understated accompaniment.

We’ve been filming Tiny Desk concerts for more than 10 years. While revisiting our archives, we discovered that some of our earliest concerts never made it to YouTube!

Mavis Staples is a legend, but she’s not stuck in the past. You probably know her work with her family band, The Staple Singers, which was all over the radio in the ’70s with hits like “Respect Yourself,” “Let’s Do It Again” and “I’ll Take You There” (which she excerpts in her performance here).

What you may not know is that Mavis Staples has been actively working with her fellow Chicago musician (and Wilco leader) Jeff Tweedy on her upcoming album, You Are Not Alone. Tweedy produced the record and wrote a few songs for her, as well — including the title track, which she sings here.

The album was recorded at Wilco’s studio, The Loft, and it includes songs by John Fogerty, Randy Newman, Rev. Gary Davis, Allen Toussaint and Pops Staples. You Are Not Alone also features a fine guest roster, including not only Tweedy (on bass, guitar and vocals), but also Nora O’Connor, Kelly Hogan and Wilco’s Patrick Sansone on keys and vibes.

Rick Holmstrom, the skilled guitarist who accompanies Staples here, also plays on the record and in her touring band. And while You Are Not Alone doesn’t come out until Sept. 14, you can get a good idea of what a treat it is by watching this stripped-down but soulful Tiny Desk concert.

Yes. At just this moment we were supposed to be at a family reunion. Now I know there’s a significant chance I’ll never see my 94yo father alive again.

Fucker is such a fragile snowflake that he had to claim that he was going to throw out a pitch at the Yankees. One tiny detail - no one told the Yankees. Another detail: No one told his sycophantic staff either. So mad scramble.

And then to “save face” Trump spews nonsense about being too busy to throw out a pitch on the day he claims he was going to in August - all while heading to the golf course to play another round.

There’s a certain comfort level that is reached in relationships with cartoonishly evil, narcissistic people.

You just imagine the worst possible thing that they could do in any given situation, and yep, sure enough, that’s what they do.

Here, we all heard that Fauci was getting to throw out the first pitch for the World-Champion Nationals, and sure enough, here came insecure little toddler Trump, screaming “No! But I’m throwing out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium, so I’m bigger and better! LOOK AT MEEEEEEEE!”

When the election is over, he’s lost, and the little red lights on the cameras go out and everyone is laughing at what a loser he is, Trump will, for an instant, be the most miserable man on the planet.

Rockwall has pushed back the start of school nine days for both virtual and in person. I have mentioned that I am in very red Texas:

While the deadline for the commitment period for In-Person or Remote Learning for students is next Monday, August 3, Senior Chief Financial Officer David Carter presented information to the Board of Trustees regarding the current selection trend and its impact on effective social distancing in school facilities. “To date, approximately 6,000 commitments have been received with 68% choosing In-Person learning and 32% choosing Remote Learning districtwide. Given social distancing standards of 6 feet, school campus capacity would essentially be cut in half. Should the selection for remote learning not increase, social distancing would be difficult to achieve given the number of families choosing In-Person Learning, especially at the high school level,” said David Carter.

Dr. Amy Ellis, Chief Curriculum & Instruction Officer, advised the Board of Trustees of the Texas Education Agency’s option for school districts to implement a hybrid learning model for students in grades 9-12 in addition to a remote instruction option. “A hybrid model for in-person instruction would help us reasonably achieve social distancing at our high schools where, if the current trend holds, we would be over the social distancing capacity by approximately 536 students at Rockwall High School and 185 students at Rockwall-Heath High School,” said Dr. Amy Ellis. Dr. Villarreal informed the Board of Trustees that the administration will watch the commitment numbers and an agenda item for a hybrid high school schedule may be on the August 3 Board meeting agenda for action should the trends continue.

We are keeping my son home specifically so that:
1. He’s not around the kids of parents who don’t take the virus seriously
2. He’s not taking up space that could be used to separate kids that have no choice but to be at school.

He’s been stationed at a NATO base in Germany, so he’s kind of use to talking to people with status. Earlier today, Nancy Pelosi accompanied John Lewis’s casket back to DC. While it was being unloaded, my BIL walked up to her and carried on a conversation. After we got our first employee that tested positive, the company put in place cleaning protocols, and allowed some people to work from home. This was only supposed to in place for two months until the virus was got under control. After 8 or so cases, they put in place mask protocols in public space. When we got to 20 cases, they started requiring masks in almost all places, including sitting in our cubes. We can only take them off when eating. We also have to do a daily online screen - basically a health questionnaire - and a temperature check at the door.

Their goal is to keep people safe but at work.

Was this discussed earlier today? Apparently some reporter finally asked Trump whether he discussed the alleged Russian bounties with Putin, and surprise! his response was that he doesn’t reveal what he discussed — but he had plenty of discussion. Seems to me that reporters have to continue pursuing this but Trump has spent his life in spewing lies and denials and has escaped any repercussions.

If there is a demand for these debates, they can be handled remotely. There is no need for the candidates or the moderators to be at the same site. But Trump being unable to stalk his opponent would probably be a deal-breaker for him.

One of the things I think we need to start talking about is getting young people into the police forces. I’m talking about college graduates who would like to help their communities. Iceland: cbsnews.com

The U.S. Ambassador to Iceland wanted to carry a gun.
Despite being assigned to one of the safest countries in the world, Jeffrey Ross Gunter has been “paranoid” about his security since coming to Reykjavik last year, according to a dozen diplomats, government officials, former officials and individuals familiar with the situation. As a result, Gunter wanted the State Department to obtain special permission from the Icelandic government for him to have a firearm. They say he also wanted door-to-door armored car service, and entertained the idea of wearing a “stab-proof vest.”

And, 7 Deputy Chiefs since May 19

Since his nomination in May 2019, Gunter has created an increasingly “untenable” working environment at the Embassy in Reykjavik, according to current and former diplomats familiar with the situation. He has already had seven Deputy Chiefs of Mission (DCM’s), experienced Foreign Service Officers who traditionally serve in the number-two job.

The first deputy prepared for more than a year and spent months learning Icelandic, only to be blocked from coming to post because, according to a State Department official, Gunter reportedly “didn’t like the look of him” at their introductory meeting. The second DCM made it to Iceland, but only lasted six months.

and so much more….

hi

Extremely local news: My wife bought one of those Cadillac bidet replacement toilet seats which arrived yesterday. She tried installing it today (she’s the DIY person here) and the hose wouldn’t properly connect to the toilet tank. Summon me because I’m tiny and can get into small spaces.

I twist myself into a pretzel to figure out why the hose isn’t in correctly, and it seemed the connector was cross-threaded to our brand-new toilet tank guts only installed last week.

I spent more than an hour trying to thread this thing onto the toilet tank with no joy. I finally gave up, and called the plumber. He will call tomorrow to make an appointment, which will cost between $200 to $300 to come out to our house to fix this, assuming he doesn’t need to go looking again for an antique toilet pump.

So for now it’s flush the toilet with a bucket of water.

In the meantime, there was one new Covid-19 case diagnosed in the Nebraska Panhandle. There are still no cases in my village, but every other town has at least one.

He tells his story of a night that started out as a protestor walking down the street to being pepper sprayed, arrested, shoved into an awful smelling cell with 40+ other men, going to solitary, and administrative setbacks that left him in jail for hours after his $500 bail was posted.

We also spoke with Natalie Weiss who has been working in both Lincoln and Omaha getting protestors out of jail by fundraising and posting bail.

About a month ago, religion counter-apologists on YouTube Jimmy Snow and Telltale Atheist tried to paint the military as a cult (Telltale uses the BITE model to score cults; he’s scored everything from the Catholic Church to the Republican Party on that scale).

They had a caller who allegedly was a Marine in Colorado claiming the military is a cult.

I wrote back to point out that wasn’t so and why; they did not return a response (which they claim they will do).

What I wrote:

Mr. Atheist and Telltale,

I found your chat clip with the Marine from Colorado interesting, on whether you considered the military a cult (it appeared to me you felt it was that way).

I wish to clear up things I saw in that clip.

I served in the US Navy for seventeen years enlisted (including time as a Navy Recruiter), until I became disabled. An example you used on the show was military personnel and veterans sometimes being poorly treated for disablements such as PTSD, and you placed the blame for this on the military.

This is misdirected blame. The military and the Veterans Administration spends its money and promotes programmes based on what the US Congress both tells it to do and how Congress funds them. If Congress fails to provide sufficient personnel, equipment, or money for programmes such as mental health or other disabilities because Congress considers them of less worth than say combat training or weaponry, then those programmes will be underfunded, underequipped, and understaffed. The military can only do what Congress allows it to do, and the same goes for the Veterans Administration.

The blame lies in who voters put in Congress and those congressmen and women’s priorities for the military. The military’s doctrine since the founding of the nation has been its subservience to the civilian government, which in turn is put in place by the voters. If the elected government of the United States says it will not fund a programme designed to treat PTSD for example, and a general or admiral says “Well too bad, we’re going to use this money you gave us for that instead of what you put in the federal budget,” at that instant you have a mutiny of the military against the civilian elected government. You don’t want the military making those decisions, military dictatorships rarely turn out well for civilian populaces.

If you are unfamiliar with him, there is a retired Navy Intelligence officer on Twitter named Jim Wright (he goes by the handle Stonekettle). He frequently notes “if you want a better nation, be better citizens.” We don’t have Trump as President because the military turned out en masse to make him President. That’s on all the voters, the overwhelming majority of whom are civilians who never served in the military.

You also brought up the idea that some military personnel or veterans might go around thinking “well, we’re better than you because you are a civilian.” I believe you can find that sort of culty attitude in every profession, group, religion, or clique of people everywhere in the world throughout time.

What concerns me more is the way civilians treat military personnel with that sort of deference. Think the phrase “thank you for your service.’ A huge number of veterans hate that phrase and wish civilians would not use it. (I prefer “welcome home” myself.) The endless fetishization of the military comes from civilians.

Consider how many military observances there are on the federal calendar. There is the birthday of each military service, Memorial Day for those fallen in battle, Armed Forces Day for those serving in the active and reserve forces, and Veterans Day for those who served in the past, all listed in the US Flag Code. There are also military observances in the US Flag Code such as VE Day, VJ Day, and Pearl Harbor Day. Those days were designated by the civilian elected government, not the military.

Now compare those to days to honour civilian services. Is there a Peace Corps day? A peacemakers day? A Diplomats’ Day? Teachers’ Day? Doctors’ Day? Where is the clamouring from voters to honour the peacemakers and giving them federal holidays? Is the cult the military, or the society at large which fetishizes military service?

You also brought up the idea you could enlist under one presidency (such as Obama) and end up serving part of your enlistment under another (such as Trump). The thing is, one doesn’t swear or affirm to uphold the President. One swears or affirms to uphold the Constitution and the orders of the officers appointed over you. Those officers are appointed by the elected officials of Congress, not the military. Additionally, officers swear to carry out their duties with no mental reservations, thus may resign their commission at any time. (An enlisted person in theory could be drafted and have a whole lot of mental reservations about military service, thus they are not held to the standard of “no mental reservations.”)

A military member is obligated to disobey an unlawful order by law as set forth by the elected government. Military personnel receive training on what constitutes lawful orders.

Unlike a religious cult such as Heaven’s Gate or Jehovah’s Witnesses, the rules for the military are laid down in the Uniform Code of Military Justice, a set of laws passed by the elected Congress which governs all military behaviour. The same UCMJ also lays out the rights of military personnel and how they should be treated if they break one of the articles in the UCMJ. Punishments or admonitions are not arbitrary or capricious. The articles are crimes in the UCMJ, some of which have no equivalent in civilian law (such as forcing surrender, contempt for government officials, or sleeping on watch) due to the nature of military service. Unlike a religious cult where the leaders can arbitrarily punish a member for a perceived infraction, military law requires following the rules of evidence and procedure of a courts-martial as laid down by the elected civilian officials of Congress. They are similar to civilian courts in that manner. That is vastly different than a cult, unless Congress writing laws and voters electing representatives and senators constitutes a cult.

Does the military change a person if that person is in the military long enough? Sure. Does Microsoft change a person if they work for Microsoft long enough? I would argue the same. Change is part of life, regardless of the path one takes; lack of change is stagnation.

Finally, you noted in passing that dying in following orders is potentially part of military service. It is also part of fire brigades, police forces, physicians and nurses dealing with new and deadly outbreaks of disease, race car driving, skiing, &c. Putting your life on the line for a goal you consider important is not new to human culture, and is not evidence of a cult.

Every organization as large as a cub scout pack is a cult if someone wants it to be. Outsiders don’t see the diversity within the military based on unit (or ship) personality and even MOS. Units like the 24ID and its 11 Bravos tried to recreate the ancient Cult of the Warrior with mixed success.

In the Navy there is a lot of pride associated with a particular aircraft squadron or ship, based on those commands’ past performance. The idea is to live up to the achievements of the command. Such goals do not make a command or a military service a cult.

The Army and the Navy have a long storied history of achievements despite what seemed to be overwhelming odds. Living up to those achievements do not make either a cult.

There seems to be quite a number of people who think military service is a sort of cult. I reject that characterisation. The military requires certain behaviour from its personnel, because those behaviours are necessary to achieve military goals. Failure to follow procedure or orders often winds up in dead personnel.

Re: larding up bills with unconnected spending

It’s in the Constitution, any and all Government spending has to come from Congress in the form of legislation i.e. a “bill”. There’s lots of spending because Government, duh! but only so much time for Congress to create and pass bills so this kind of lard is regularly added to other bills to get the money for stuff allocated.

It seemed like a good idea 250 years ago that Congress should control all the spending when the only military forces the Government was committed to was the Coastguard and the Navy, and other spending was miniscule compared to today’s America. Other nations have a better grasp of modern realities, the US has an ancient and creaking Constitution the Legislature and Executive have to find workarounds for.

Catching up on some news here, and I’m seeing the NFL has cancelled pre-season games. I agree with others that a cancellation of the regular season is probably next on the agenda. I wouldn’t be surprised if MLB ended up cancelling the season as well and possibly the NBA too.

One of the reasons that the Repubs seemed to think that things would be “normal” by the fall was that all the major sports leagues would either have restarted their seasons or (for the fall sports) getting ready to start up. Now it looks like all the leagues may end up finally acknowledging reality and canceling for the rest of the year. When that becomes the case, another traditional late-election distraction evaporates.

The personnel cycle pretty much fights that kind of identity in the Army. By his 4th PCS into a new unit a sergeant can recite the commander’s welcoming speech by heart: “Finest unit and most dedicated group of soldiers it has ever been my privilege to serve with”.

Same in the Navy. The same also goes during a retirement ceremony.

Assumption Greek Orthodox Church’s Greek Festival downsized this year due to COVID-19-related concerns. For this reason, the church is calling its 94th annual festival “Mikró Greek Festival 2020”—“Mikro” being the Greek word for “small.”

Its main difference from previous years is the food. This year there will not be various booths set up at Bridgeport’s Prairie Winds Community Center with a variety of Greek food choices. Instead, interested people can pre-order their food from a limited menu by Aug. 2 to pick up on Aug. 8 at a tent located at the center’s parking lot.

Festival Committee Chairman Nicole Dean said while they weren’t necessarily concerned about the virus itself, they were concerned about planning for the number of people who would have decided to show up, which is why the organizers made the decision to go the pre-ordering route.

(more at the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald, Annual Greek Festival reduced to a smaller scale, online ordering

On-line ordering isn’t going to work so well here, since most people in the county have no Internet service or access to cell service.

They never have leverage, and yet it’s the Dems that the media thinks need to “compromise” when this 11th hour-style horseshit happens. Instead of the pressure being on the Repubs to give ground or even accept that their bill is shite, it’s Dems who are under pressure to convince the voters that their bill is the better of the two. Or (Zod help us) it’s Dems who have to break from their “radical” base and “meet in the middle.”

Breaking at WaPo: Twitter penalizes Donald Trump Jr. for posting hydroxychloroquine misinformation amid coronavirus pandemic

On Monday evening, Facebook scrubbed from its site a viral video showing a group of doctors making misleading and false claims about the coronavirus pandemic after more than 14 million people had watched it. Hours later, President Trump tweeted out multiple clips of the same video to his 84.2 million followers.

Trump shared the video — which claims that face masks and shutdowns are not needed to stop the spread of the virus — as he shared 14 tweets over a half-hour span defending the use of hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial drug that the president has repeatedly promoted, and attacking Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s top infectious-diseases expert.

Twitter soon followed Facebook and YouTube in removing the videos, deleting several of the tweets that Trump shared, and even adding a note to its trending topics warning about the potential risks of hydroxychloroquine use.

“Tweets with the video are in violation of our covid-19 misinformation policy,” Liz Kelley, a spokeswoman for Twitter, told The Washington Post.

Shortly after, Donald Trump Jr. shared the same video on his Twitter, but his account was penalized for violating the site’s covid misinformation policies. The tweet must be deleted, a Twitter spokesperson said, and his account will have “limited functionality” for 12 hours.

The new slogan for 2020, I guess:

“Before Trump and his supporters embrace Immanuel’s medical expertise, though, they should consider other medical claims Immanuel has made—including those about alien DNA and the physical effects of having sex with witches and demons in your dreams.

Immanuel, a pediatrician and a religious minister, has a history of making bizarre claims about medical topics and other issues. She has often claimed that gynecological problems like cysts and endometriosis are in fact caused by people having sex in their dreams with demons and witches.

She alleges alien DNA is currently used in medical treatments, and that scientists are cooking up a vaccine to prevent people from being religious. And, despite appearing in Washington, D.C. to lobby Congress on Monday, she has said that the government is run in part not by humans but by “reptilians” and other aliens.”

Cellphone? Who needs that when you can just use a payphone when you need to make a call.

Internet? If you have time to surf the internet, you could be working a second job!

Cable tv? What’s wrong with using an antenna, it worked for me when I got my first job (back in the 70s…)!

Eating out? Find friends or relatives who will cook you meals, it will help improve your social life!

Kids today just don’t know how good their got it.

If you recover, God protected you because he loves you.
If you die, God called you to him because he loves you.

Duke Forrest in Robert Altman’s M*A*S*H (one of the few main characters of the movie that didn’t make it to the TV show) said it best, just sub ‘Donald Trump’ (or really any conservative Republican, really) for ‘Frank Burns’: “Oh, now damn it, Henry. Frank Burns is a menace! Every time a patient croaks on him, he says “it’s God’s will” or somebody else’s fault.”

According to MAGAts, tariffs don’t raise the price of goods because the country they’re imposed upon has to eat the increased cost, BUT want you to believe that raising the minimum wage will make everything outrageously expensive overnight.

Trump was in NC yesterday, and his gait was all over the place. He’s got balance issues and is dragging his foot and swinging it out.

We know Trump loves to project his failures on to his enemies. So when he tries to claim that Biden isn’t healthy, we know the reality is that Trump’s in a bad way, and we can see it with how he walks.

This isn’t just on a ramp. That’s a flat surface and he’s walking with an odd gait. That indicates neurological issues (perhaps why he was given the memory/cognitive ability test in first place).

Trump’s destroying our ability to respond to disasters, prevent them, and undermining public safety with every move. Some are occurring under the radar, by refusing to staff organizations.

This is one such example, which can have devastating consequences.

Think back in recent history to major industrial accidents - and how they are investigated and actions taken to prevent similar events from occurring.

Trump’s preventing the investigation and action steps by not properly staffing the agency.

This endangers all public health and safety.

Just as the businesses backing the GOP want it. They don’t care how many people die so long as the millionaire owners can make more money.
