“YOUR FANDANGO” (Lyrics):

Everybody likes it when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango
Everybody loves it when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango
Everybody loves it when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango
Everybody loves it when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango
Everybody likes it when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango
Everybody loves it when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango

Your fandango, fandango

Everyone loves it when you begin, your fandango fandango
Everyone loves it when you begin, your fandango fandango

Everybody loves it when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango
Everybody loves it when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango

All the ladies swoon whenever
You Sarabande
Every Friday ‘til Monday
They would gladly Pasodoble
In a bright pink tuxedo
Or a little tiny speedo
You make everyone’s libido
Stop and say, “Oh Yes Indeed-o”

Everybody likes it when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango
Everybody loves it when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango, your fandango, fandango

Everyone, everyone, by that I mean everyone, likes it when you begin, your fandango, fandango
Everyone, everyone, by that I mean everyone, loves it when you begin, your fandango, fandango

Whether Tango or Bolero
Or Corrida or Flamenco
We don’t mind a little Zambra
Or a quick Zapateado
They may envy your Farruca
But not so much your Cachucha
And I must say your Bambera
Is no match for my Muiñeira
Not your mother’s Martinetes
Or your father’s Matachines
Nor your sister’s Alborea
Or your cousin’s old Solea
We may not Alegrias
On your style of Bulerias
But we’d all pay to see ya
Dance your famous Seguidilla

Everybody likes it when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango
Everybody likes it when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango, your fandango, fandango

Everyone loves it when you begin, your fandango, fandango
Everyone loves it when you begin, your fandango, fandango
Everyone loves it when you begin, your fandango, fandango
Everyone loves it when you begin, your fandango, fandango

Everybody likes it when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango
Everybody loves it when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango, when you do your fandango

Todd is the original energizer bunny. And weird was Todd from day one. My wife had a friend who was getting married to a drummer outside Philly long ago and far away. Big shindig. He was friends with Todd and Todd worked as a valet and only a few knew who he was. He had a blast. We sat and smoked Columbian Gold and laughed and laughed.
Update; Not Todd smoked. We did.
Update: Wife told me it was in Flourtown Pa and she lost contact with that crowd long ago.

The next election cycle will be different if only because folks won’t be promising to get out of Afghanistan and calling the Armenian genocide Armenian genocide.

So nice to have a POTUS do gutsy good stuff. Just doing the right thing is really so shocking that the “news” doesn’t even really know how to cover it.

So happy.

Have you (or any other of us Lizards) been sure to vote for Todd for the Rock&Roll Hall of Fame? That he has been left out so long (especially given his long history in the field) seems a drastic omission.
(Mrs Jay and I signed up on the RRHOF site, and were semi-diligent in pushing his vote totals - that he missed the cut last years was a shame IOHO….)

It’s bad because Turkey is a NATO ally and how dare Joe piss off the fine upstanding Erdogan, a model leader for his country, we would do well to elect someone like him.

I remember watching that attempted coup with so many mixed emotions and remembering the commitments we had made to the very worst NATO “partner” there is. I guess having them technically on our side is better than not, better salt any state secrets you give to them though.

If you’re comparing Erdogan to Trump, well, I will say that Erdogan is quite a bit more intelligent than Trump. (Low bar, I know.) Hence how he was able to actually stay in power while Trump had to slink off to Florida to await the wheels of justice.

re: #11 nines09

agreed…. I guess the hardest issue I have with it is how some one-hit wonders are welcome, others are not. Depending upon who influenced whom, and the very definition of what comprises Rock and Roll and what it is not. Is it white peeps R&B, Pop Music with a guitar section? I understand that musical lines are blurred, are all instruments created equally?

until you are clear on the definition, people are always going to be upset.

Myself, I’ve always thought for it to be considered Rock and Roll, there needed to be a guitar, a bass and drums.. you could also have a piano or a saxophone… beyond that there be tygers… Obviously, not everyone agrees. Controversy promotes attention.

Gotten to the point in my old age and accepting I like what I like and everyone else is free to do the same and I’m happy to give those artists whose music moves me, my money for their creation.

I normally don’t double-reply, but I had this thought. Turkey really embodies the spirit of Maxim 29: “The enemy of my enemy is my enemy’s enemy. No more, no less.” It’s better to have them on our side than not, but I would never call them our friend, and I would treat them with a healthy amount of skepticism and distrust.

very much agreed… my thing was the power-pop genre, which obviously has its roots in the core of rock and roll in the 60’s, so natch groups the like Beatles, The Kinks, The Hollies, The Dave Clark 5 and The Who; loom large for those that followed in their footsteps (Big Star, Badfinger, Raspberries (Cleveland’s Own)) in the 70’s who helped shape and craft the sounds of Springsteen and Cheap Trick … In a way, I wish they wouldn’t limit themselves to the Rock and Roll labels and just make it Popular Music.

Time was, the US had short-range nuclear missiles in Turkey pointed at Ukraine and other Soviet states. Their existence was part of the lead-up to the Cuban Missile Crisis when JFK refused to withdraw them along with similar missiles in Italy when pressed to do so by the Soviets. When the Soviets responded by planning to position similar missiles in Cuba JFK, rather than concede, threatened to start an all-out nuclear war that would have killed hundreds of millions of people. Later, after the dust died down the missiles in Turkey and Italy were secretly withdrawn, largely because they were functionally obsolete and being replaced by home-based ICBMs and long-range bombers.

During the period when Erdogan was Prime Minister and later President, Turkish troops served in Afghanistan as part of the NATO forces there defending America from the existential threat of three hundred religious nutters armed with boxcutters hiding in caves. From Wikipedia, fourteen Turkish servicemen died, mostly from accidents (a helicopter crash killed 12 of them).

It’s a hyperbolic extension of the “cows are the biggest contributors to global warming” trope that’s been rather debated over the last couple of decades. The right-wingers have been taking that and running with it to say that anyone who takes climate change seriously must be anti-red meat, which is obviously anti-American.

I think environmentalists want to reduce factory farming, hormones and antibiotics in feedlots, make regulations about runoff from slaughterhouses, etc.

It would make beef more expensive, and there’d be somewhat less of it. But it’s not in any way outlawed.

Here’s a dandy story for you:

The Arlington Public Library in Arlington TX has a mechanism for playing music in its lobby. Among the selections being played recently were various Schoolhouse Rock numbers such as “The Preamble”, “Unpack Your Adjectives,” and “Three Is a Magic Number”.

As fate would have it, some idiot complained to the management that there was MUSIC WITH WORDS being played in the library lobby.

Rather than do the right thing, the Arlington Public Library in Arlington TX did what it always does, which was capitulate to the first complainer that came in the door, principles be damned. All the Schoolhouse Rock tunes had to be removed forthwith, lest this one lunatic be offended.

And from now on, I will describe the Arlington Public Library with adjectives.

Beef farming, I think, is the most energy intensive and has the most transportation costs of all the livestock animals, and it isn’t even close.

If we just switched to pork and chicken, we’d actually put a real dent into CO2 generation.

I keep saying this, but the Biden Administration, and the congressional Democrats need to take the gloves off. There isn’t room for anything else.

My question exactly. The Biden Administration has been very adamant that “bipartisan” = “we’re going to do what the voters want, and fuck any Republican who crosses our path.” Biden’s been playing hardball since he took the oath on January 20th. Filibuster aside, Schumer and Pelosi haven’t been making it easy for them either. So far, I’ve been pretty chuffed with how they’ve been playing the game.

Minutes before Trump left office, millions of the Pentagon’s dormant IP addresses sprang to life
After decades of not using a huge chunk of the Internet, the Pentagon has given control of millions of computer addresses to a previously unknown company in an effort to identify possible cyber vulnerabilities and threats
washingtonpost.com

A person familiar with the pilot effort, who agreed to speak on the condition of anonymity because the program isn’t public, said it is important for the Defense Department to have “visibility and transparency” into its various cyber resources, including IP addresses, and manage the addresses properly so they will be available if and when the Pentagon wants to use them.
“If you can’t see it, you can’t defend it,” the person said.

Yes, the California Republican Party is third in registrations statewide and I expect it only to shrink more.

This “recall” effort was funded by and pushed by Republicans. It’s a show, a way to feed the narrative that California is a bad place, etc.

The recall effort, if it is on the ballot, only got there by Republicans signing it along with the usual malcontents.

I’m not a fan of Newsom. But I can’t really say he’s been bad for California.

The recallers of course want to complain about pandemic shutdowns. That is the Republican schtick to appeal to the know-nothing base.

1. 1st grade children in public schools learn whatever the local school board says they should learn; the schools are funded usually by cities and counties, sometimes by states, but NEVER by the federal government (except in DC. but that’s a whole separate matter.)

2. Critical Race Theory is a way of looking at history that doesn’t just do names and dates and places; it says “this happened because…”, which led to this next thing that happened because, and here’s some speeches and documents from the time that explain what the people then believed to be the because…

Rather than do the right thing, the Arlington Public Library in Arlington TX did what it always does, which was capitulate to the first complainer that came in the door, principles be damned. All the Schoolhouse Rock tunes had to be removed forthwith, lest this one lunatic be offended.

Watched The Doctor’s Case that was part of the view-a-long party. I found it entertaining as a feature, though I am not big into the Holmes-type of mysteries.

I do notice that there was a second production of the same King short story. Produced at about the same time, but it appears to never have been released for public viewing: imdb.com

Regardless, the one we watched today (
imdb.com ) is probably the better of the two. William Davis is a good character actor, though there are enough significant differences between him and the actor who played John Watson that I found cutting between the two a bit harsh.

Civilization certainly made beer necessary.

Humans were brewing beer before we made bread much less even grew grain ourselves. The wild grain - whatever kind they could find - was gathered, then germinated in water, drained and dried making malt. Next, they mashed and heated them, before finally adding wild yeast and leaving the mixture to ferment in a bit of water. After fermenting, a straw could be stuck into the bottom of the mildly alcoholic porridge. The grain was probably the first cereal food for human consumption too.

Except the internet isn’t a public utility, at least not in the sense that most of us are familiar with. It may have started out that way at one time, with servers hosted on college campuses and government sites. But the moment that the private sector was factored in, the idea of the internet as being a public utility went out the window.

You want to access that “new public square”? You gotta pay a private company, as government-funded access points are few and far between. You don’t wanna pay Comcast, Verizon, Cox, etc for your internet connection? Then you better hope that the local wifi hotspots are not password protected.

But say you find a way online without paying a service provider. Where is that “new public square” located? That’s right: Privately owned websites. There are still government and college servers, but they’re now treated like gated communities, with access generally limited to students/employees for security purposes. If you want to set up your own soapbox in that “new public square,” then you gotta rent the space either on a private server or spend the money to build your own servers and web pages.

See, the biggest problem with the whole “treat the internet as a public utility” argument is that it stopped being such ages ago. The backbone of the modern internet may be about the only part that the government can still lay claim to. But so long as I’m paying Verizon to use their broadband network to access private websites hosted on private servers…there’s no way to make the argument that the internet is anything other than a private service whose gatekeepers can deny you access whenever they damn well please.

How about other African countries step in and take some of those elephants then? Or some millionaires paying to set up more sanctuaries in Zimbabwe or elsewhere. Just sounds unnecessarily cruel to me.

Moving a single elephant is a major logistical enterprise for a zoological park. Moving 45,000 of them… just no. They’re territorial and, if moved, may well try to go home or at least move away from the place they’re relocated to because it’s not home, ending up in human-inhabited areas, farms, highways etc. Breaking up a family herd in the wild is a no-no too, it causes all sorts of social problems for the remainers so you’d really need to move twenty or thirty individuals at a time.

An adult elephant eats about half a tonne of green stuff a day. They will knock down trees and dig up roots to get that fuel when food is scarce. Think of them as dusky grey self-propelled bulldozers wrecking grazing land other animals need to feed themselves.

Sure they’re cute and picturesque but there are too many of them in areas we humans have claimed, managing them as parks. Contraceptive implants or similar might work in the long run but that’s iffy and VERY difficult to implement.

Culling elephants has been going on for decades. I remember reading about a South African game warden’s experiences in that regard written back in the 1960s — it wasn’t something he liked doing but it was necessary, in his opinion and in the opinion of the park managers. The cull he described, they killed all the members of the chosen herd, including the youngsters, in a few minutes and at some personal risk to themselves since they had to get in close to ensure clean kills and none of the herd escaped, since the survivors might go rogue and start attacking farms near the park. The meat and hide was recovered and distributed to the local tribes, I’m not sure what happened to any ivory (this was the 1960s after all).

People who want us to treat the internet as “a public square”, a “utility”… maybe that’s something they should have considered when they so vigorously opposed net neutrality.

That’s because it’s just like all those pseudo-intellectuals who had no problem with speakers being booed or chased off campus until the ones being tarred and feathered were wingnuts. It’s someone trying to carry water for those making bad faith arguments, which in this case are wingnuts who were okay with Twitter and Facebook banning/silencing people…up until the pendulum swung back and clobbered them over the head.

The US Flag is at half-staff as a mark of respect for the life and service of former Vice-President Walter Mondale until sunset on the day of his interment. As of yet no date has been announced.

Mr. Mondale’s family has announced a simultaneous memorial service in Minnesota and Washington DC for September.

I don’t imagine that the flag will remain at half-staff until September if Mr. Mondale has not been buried by then; President Biden would likely order it back to full-staff.

You want to access that “new public square”? You gotta pay a private company, as government-funded access points are few and far between. You don’t wanna pay Comcast, Verizon, Cox, etc for your internet connection? Then you better hope that the local wifi hotspots are not password protected.

add to that when the ‘aggrieved’ talk about access to the new public square they are really demanding free specific reach. access to where the audience is.

This is about a Panhandle resident from Gordon (northeast of me).

Most epilepsy patients — up to 70% — can be treated with medications. But about one in three cannot. An estimated 1.2% of Americans, or about 3.4 million people, have active epilepsy. About one in 26 people in the U.S. will develop epilepsy at some point during their lifetime.

re: #85 O say, does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave..

I hope Biden maintains the existentialist “bipartisan’ MO he has operated on so far- that is, just simply do what is right and what you set to do anyway.

Ignore the Republican assholes as much as possible. Assume they are only going to operate on what is convenient for them short term politically and always in bad faith.

This republic is functioning on an existentialist level right now. Biden seems to know that the next election could mean the end of democracy itself in this country and if we go down, at least go down fighting for what is right.

Rich countries grab half of projected covid-19 vaccine supply (The Economist, November 12, 2020)

Less-well-off countries may have to wait years to inoculate their people

AS A SECOND wave of coronavirus infections sweeps through Europe, and America continues to break daily records for new covid-19 cases, the need for a vaccine is more urgent than ever. Pharmaceutical companies are racing to bring a viable drug to market. And this week came a bright ray of hope. On November 9th Pfizer and BioNTech, two drug firms, announced that their experimental covid-19 vaccine was more than 90% effective in initial trials. But there is a long way to go before vaccines are available in sufficient quantities to immunise the entire world. Little wonder, then, that countries are scrambling to secure supplies of vaccine candidates, even before their safety and efficacy have been established.

Most of these deals, known as advance market commitments (AMCs), have been struck by rich countries. Data collected by researchers at Duke University’s Global Health Innovation Centre show that high-income countries account for more than half of all such confirmed purchases. America alone is responsible for nearly one-sixth of these AMCs, having pre-ordered more than 1bn doses from half a dozen drugmakers. This amounts to three jabs per person. Canada has purchased ten doses for each of its citizens, the most for any country or alliance on a per person basis (see chart). A group of rich countries has already agreed to buy roughly 600m doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech drug, nearly half of the total the drugmakers say they can produce by the end of 2021.

More than five million people, or nearly 8 percent of those who got a first shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, have missed their second doses, according to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That is more than double the rate among people who got inoculated in the first several weeks of the nationwide vaccine campaign.

Even as the country wrestles with the problem of millions of people who are wary about getting vaccinated at all, local health authorities are confronting an emerging challenge of ensuring that those who do get inoculated are doing so fully.

The reasons vary for why people are missing their second shots. In interviews, some said they feared the side effects, which can include flulike symptoms. Others said they felt that they were sufficiently protected with a single shot.

In Paraguay, the government is under intense political pressure to drop its diplomatic recognition of Taiwan, Beijing’s price for providing shots. Latin American countries that recently dumped Taiwan are already getting deliveries. The Brazilian government is rescinding its rejection of Chinese telecom giant Huawei as part of its pitch to Beijing for vaccine help. Faller called for a “whole of government effort” to help Latin American countries resist these moves once Americans are vaccinated.

“We’re seeing it play out,” he said. “We need to stay on the field.”

LAST WEEK, the billionth dose of covid-19 vaccine was made. It is a sign of how greatly capacity has expanded over the past six months that the next billion could be produced by May 27th, according to Airfinity, an analytics firm (see chart). Yet this ambition is at risk from American export controls on raw materials and equipment. Production lines in India, turning out at least 160m doses of covid vaccine a month, will soon grind to a halt unless America supplies 37 critical items.

On April 16th Adar Poonawalla, head of the world’s biggest vaccine-maker, the Serum Institute of India (SII), begged President Joe Biden, in a tweet, to “lift the embargo of raw material exports out of the US…Your administration has the details”. Suresh Jadhav, SII’s executive director, says that in the next four to six weeks manufacturing of two vaccines will be affected: AstraZeneca’s, of which SII makes 100m doses a month, and Novavax’s, of which it expects to make 60m-70m doses a month. SII says it first alerted the American government about this two months ago.

Except the internet isn’t a public utility, at least not in the sense that most of us are familiar with. It may have started out that way at one time, with servers hosted on college campuses and government sites. But the moment that the private sector was factored in, the idea of the internet as being a public utility went out the window..

Also when it comes to other forms of broadcasting, there are limited channels and bandwidths to work with, the Internet has nearly inexhaustible capacity.

This is primarily a result of invoking the Defense Production Act.

While that Act directs companies to make products in support of the national interest, it also prohibits those same companies from exporting those products without cumbersome paperwork and governmental review.

That means for foreign vaccine manufacturers, they are hampered by lack of exports from the United States. When coupled with hoarding of the same products made in other countries, this means that foreign vaccine production is going to hit a dramatic wall in a few weeks.

You’re gonna be focusing more on the harder to cheat than the easier to vote.’ What would you say to people who are very doubtful of your ability to participate in this conversation?

SG: We’ll see.

Opinion: Biden has an opportunity to ensure an FDR-like legacy, and he might blow it

It’s about the sunset on the child allowance cutting the rate of children in poverty in half, and comparing it to social security.

He might blow getting Republicans who don’t want him to succeed on board with something they don’t want to pass?

Spanish man charged with infecting 22 people with COVID-19 (Associated Press)

MADRID (AP) — A Spanish man with COVID-19 symptoms who coughed on work colleagues and told them “I’m going to give you all the coronavirus” has been charged with intentionally causing injury after allegedly infecting 22 people.

Spanish police said their investigation began after a COVID-19 outbreak at the company where the 40-year-old man worked on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca.

May not be in Pennsylvania since PNC expanded to a lot of states east of the Mississippi and established footholds in Texas and Colorado!

Gee, I remember when banks could only expand into surrounding counties in Pennsylvania and they couldn’t branch outside the Commonwealth!

People should be allowed to pick and choose what individual channels they want to watch from a cable provider. They shouldn’t be forced to buy a package with channels they don’t want.

There’s a shop in the downtown area of where we live that has a shop that sells that exact photo as a postcard. Along with others. And framed 8x10 photos of the same lynchings. In 2021. But it’s GA and I don’t expect better behavior from people here anymore. I know we have Stacey Abrams and two Democratic senators now, but there are enclaves of racism here that go unchallenged everywhere. Hell, GA’s Forsyth county had laws on the books that barred black families from even living there as late as the 1980s. The only thing that will change things here is demographics, more young people and POC moving here. And lots of spiteful ass white people dying off or leaving.

The real problem is that medical costs are uncontrolled in this country; and even if the costs were controlled, there is no way that an average person could afford the costs, absent some form of health insurance that is heavily subsidized by the government. The modern capitalist system is destroying us here — it is one thing to allow Post and Kellogg’s to duke it out for the most popular cereal (with regulations to guarantee products are safe); it’s another thing to expect people to try to find the best medical care at the lowest cost — health care is a right and should be treated as such. Costs should not play any role in services that are involved with maintaining or restoring health.
