Using foreign law (since repealed) to justify a cruel imposition and intrusion into a person’s rights. These same right wing Christian fascists were more than happy to trot out family rights and parental rights to supersede government when it suited them on masking and public health measures, but not when it comes to trans rights.

Dragging Abbot from office and tarring and feathering him is also an option that I think people should consider. Give these backward asshats backward punishments.

E.U. will unveil a strategy to break free from Russian gas, after decades of dependence
wapo.st gift link

For years, Europe’s dependence on Russian energy has held it back from taking powerful action against Kremlin mischief. But now, the Russia-Ukraine crisis is forcing a change unlike any before, driving the European Union to make plans for a permanent, far-reaching break from Russian oil and gas, European policymakers said.

NY DA Bragg expresses doubt about prosecuting Trump in the NY office (state charges). Two prosecutors in his office resign.

Yeah, Bragg is definitely not intent on holding Trump accountable. He’s following in the footsteps of Vance, who also let Trump off the hook.

Once again, we’re seeing the rich and power weasel their way out of criminal charges that would have laid out anyone else.

Which was going to be a natural consequence of Putin acting out.

The EU can see the dependency as the threat it is. And has now started taking steps to alleviate it. I presume LNG exporters in the USA and elsewhere are happy with this since they will at least initially be the substitute Europe will try to draw from.

Some of my adamant Trump supporting FB “friends” or FOAFs who spew anti-Biden or anti-Fauci invective on a regular basis have been quiet for the past week. Is it possible that they have migrated to a platform such as MeWe where they may have a more hospitable environment?

My Trump supporting friend whose FB posts are mostly puns or humor about us olds or reminiscences about the good old days is still around. It’s just those who are fonder of political postings are absent.

I just check Facebook every other week or so. I’ve set most of the Trumpists set on mute/ignore at this point. Though I have noted a general lack of political commentary since the election. (These people were pretty much in the “f**k your feelings” camp in 2016. Go figure.) Though I am also pretty certain they have not changed in outlook since “Let’s Go Brandon” class stuff gets pictured now and then. So I think these people are pretty much around the bend at this point or are feeling very embarrassed about who and what they were supporting and thus are trying to ignore it and hopes their involvement is overlooked and goes away.

Bragg’s a coward and already violating his day 1 memo. He insisted that he’d prosecute the challenging cases, not just the easy ones.

Turns out, he was never right for the job. He follows Vance who let Trump off the hook too.

Grrr….

The evidence has been there all along. Financial crimes are harder to prove, but Trump’s left a paper trail miles wide. The prosecutors who resigned are probably disgusted by Bragg’s cowardice and refusal to hold Trump accountable for his crimes.

Short thread on pending anti-trans legislation in various States.

82
Mattand  Feb 23, 2022 • 12:48:25pm

I imagine every state catches shit from other states and what not, but I’ve taken a massive amount of grief and borderline abuse about NJ over the years (hell, I’ve caught it on this site for being from the “wrong” end of the state by other NJ residents who should fucking know better).

Not that NJ is free from of problems or criticism, either. Major voting laws were enacted due to white Republicans in NJ intimidating black voters at the polls in the early 80’s.

We’ve got our issues here.

But at their worst, I have a hard time picturing NJ Republicans even trying to float the kind of inhumane shit Texas is doing to trans kids right now.

Goddamn, Texas; this is some fucking Nazi-level targeting of a group of kids; KIDS; who are already living on the razor’s edge.

Fuck Texas Republicans and everyone who supports them.

Bragg’s a coward and already violating his day 1 memo. He insisted that he’d prosecute the challenging cases, not just the easy ones.

Turns out, he was never right for the job. He follows Vance who let Trump off the hook too.

Grrr….

I think the South is the test lab for all this garbage. The hate spreads from there as fascists try to outdo each other and be as evil as possible. Like it’s a fucking reality TV show. And it’s not just politics, it’s creating the exact combo of awful that spreads like a fucking disease. It’s been there since First Contact, but Trump kicked open all the doors and busted out the windows that had made this shit at least something to be a little fucking ashamed of.

I have lived in both GA and Florida since leaving Ohio a bit over 30 years ago. I have never seen very much of that “southern hospitality” so many natives like to bullshit others with. You only get that if you “belong” somehow, that means going to church, having a kid in sports, having money/material wealth, go on the right vacations or having the right friends etc. If you’re new here, you better have one of the above qualifications to have any kind of social circle. Remove the money, and you still have the other crap in place. I rarely saw overt racism til I moved here too. I’m a white lady in suburban Atlanta, so a lot of white people have run their mouths in my presence on matters of race, gender, LGBT people and poor folks including the white poor population. It seems to be worse among the people born and raised here, though I know a lot of assholes from up north who love that shit too.

There are some great people here, but damn they really don’t seem to have any power or influence to help make change. My son’s generation is more open and accepting, but many are struggling to make it and politics/policy/boots on the ground stuff is just one more thing on a huge to do list. They vote, but not many seem to be involved politically. I’m trying to convince one young man right now to run for local office. School board or city counsel in the place he’s lived his whole life. I hope he will.

I grew up and went to high school and college in Texas, started to realize what was happening and got the FUCK out of there back in the early 90’s. This creeping fascism has been going on in Texas for decades, kick started of course by the early 60’s Civil Rights Era but really finding solid footing with Reagan. Texas started really dismantling their popular socialist programs that really helped people under Reagan and now we have a Governor who is an open fascist complete with the direct in your face persecution of powerless minorities. What has been happening has not been a surprise to anyone paying attention.

Something will eventually inflict enough pain on Russia that they’ll turn on Putin.

Certainly possible that an oligarch gets sufficiently irritated because his daughter is forced to leave UCLA when the sanctions really hit — but likely not. And the ordinary citizens who put up with the Soviet Union and their descendants have not shown enough interest in overthrowing the monarch, especially given his propensity for poisoning critics or tossing them out windows. I just don’t see an uprising among the population at any time during my lifetime. People living in regimes run by autocrats do not suddenly rebel against their masters.

That’s more or less what they said about the Soviet Union.

I rarely saw overt racism til I moved here too. I’m a white lady in suburban Atlanta, so a lot of white people have run their mouths in my presence on matters of race, gender, LGBT people and poor folks including the white poor population.

As I’ve stated before, I’ve lived within 12 miles of Philly in South Jersey most of my life, and for the last 40+ years, and I run into this shit all. The. Time.

Literally minding my own business reading a comic book on a subway platform only to have a “fellow” White person feel free to open up about how “those” people are a problem.

Christ, I went to art school in Philly and some of the shit my supposedly openminded fellow art students would say about LGQTB people just appalling. In fucking art school.

Naturally. Normal people think of a power utility as a business for providing electric power to customers. Republicans think of a power utility as a vehicle for enriching its owners.

According to court documents, Christopher Brenner Cook, 20, of Columbus, Ohio; Jonathan Allen Frost, 24, of West Lafayette, Indiana, and of Katy, Texas; and Jackson Matthew Sawall, 22, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, each pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to provide material support to terrorists. The charge and plea agreements indicate that the defendants knew and intended that the material support they conspired to provide would be used to prepare for and carry out the federal offense of destroying energy facilities.

In February 2020, the co-conspirators met in Columbus, Ohio, to further discuss their plot. Frost provided Cook with an AR-47 and the two took the rifle to a shooting range to train.

Frost also provided Cook and Sawall with suicide necklaces during the Columbus meeting. The necklaces were filled with fentanyl and were to be ingested if and when the defendants were caught by law enforcement. Both Cook and Sawall expressed their commitment to dying in furtherance of their mission.

The point being that leaving Texas doesn’t mean you get to a better place:

The point she makes is germane. Greater Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and Greater Houston have some of the best health care research hospitals in the US. I have found Texans (I’ve been here since ‘89) to be some of the purely *nicest* people I’ve ever met.

The fact is the big Cities are Blue, the ‘burbs are purple, and the hustings are just as Red as a Chinese flag.

And Texas has always been this way. Y’all should read Forget the Alamo, which is a Cracker Jack look at the history of our fair State. Most of the people who came to Austin’s Colony, which at the time was within the Mexican State of Coahuila y Texas, were from the South, and many descended from English convicts (England sent their convicts to the Colonies until the Revolution, when they pivoted to Australia).

I see a nuke stampede developing. I once asked a Brazilian general, in private, how long it would take them to develop a usable nuclear weapon if they disregarded all anti-proliferation protocols. His answer? “Two weeks.”

[Embedded content]

When I was an undergrad in the early 1980s, back then it was assumed that ANY country could get nukes, given enough time and money. The example used then was Nauru (now sinking due to global warming) but back then, specialists in nuclear proliferation said even Nauru could have nukes within 10 years if it threw all its money at them.

That said, two weeks assumes you can buy your nukes at Arms R Us, get next day delivery of your turnkey missile system and use the rest of the time to train the operators.

I know this crap is everywhere. I grew up in rural Ohio, close to Appalachia and later in Columbus and it’s suburbs. Adults trashed anyone they perceived as less than. It wasn’t til I moved to GA and FL that I saw outright awful behavior directed blatantly at people of any color. I know that happens everywhere too, but it’s like it’s programmed into the DNA of this place, and like some people feel an obligation to make it worse.

I was here in GA for a couple of months and on my way to work at my new job one morning I saw men in fucking Klan robes and hoods coming out of a big wooded area in the middle of the apartment complex I had just moved into. It scared the shit out of me. A few nights later a cross got burned on the lawn of a black family who owned a house a couple of miles from there. I had never seen blatant hostility and confrontation of people of color prior to that. Not that it didn’t exist, it was just not filtered out. We have a problem in this country with this shit, but I do think the south and southern politicians, many of them, incubate and encourage it.

re: #182 mmmirele

The Pakistanis used to be able to deliver nuke tech to high bidders via the Khan network. It wouldn’t take much for them to resurrect that.

Other countries have proliferated nuke tech in the past, including the US, France, and Israel/South Africa. What it takes to build a nuke is a known quantity. To get the appropriate nuclear materials is the hard part. That’s why Iran and North Korea have made substantial efforts to enrich uranium and get weapons grade uranium and/or plutonium. The physics of the bomb itself are relatively easy.

Khan network showed Iran how to build the centrifuges that enrich the nukes. Syria looked that way too.

Delivery systems? Depends on how sophisticated you want to get. Scud missiles aren’t particularly accurate, but a nuke hitting your country doesn’t care if it’s on target or not.

Ukraine is in the weird position of having had nukes and giving them up as part of the post-Soviet breakup. Turns out that the cost/benefit analysis of giving up nukes because of the costs/safety of maintaining them undervalued the deterrence value.
