re: #557 Dread Pirate Ron

In email responses to the Herald’s findings, Helen Aguirre Ferré, executive director of the Republican Party of Florida, said that the party “follows all applicable laws relating to voter registration” and that it is the party’s protocol to “review every concern with our [voter registration] vendors promptly.”

She added: “Let’s be honest, it is suspect that these reports surfaced immediately after Florida Republicans overtook Democrats in voter registration in record numbers.” She declined to speak with reporters.

Vote suppression in action.

Bok Choy Double Delight

Chicken and shrimp are the double delight part of this stir fry. It’s in a shrimp and chicken stock based sauce with Thai sweet chili sauce all over jasmine rice.

There is no longer a good outcome for Putin. Winning the tanks and planes phase of the Ukrainian War may be possible. He has lost the battle for winning the Ukrainian people—forever. And he is ruining a bad economy, making his own people more miserable. No genius he.

Totally stole this:

Putting a decimal point in the wrong place is a miscalculation. This is a major fuck up.

There’s no positive outcome here for Putin, even if he should somehow succeed in capturing Kyiv and forcing a surrender. A quick and (relatively) bloodless war would have been a major boon for him, but the longer this goes on the harder it becomes to justify the whole mess. Every day that Kyiv remains free and Zelensky in power is a day that stiffens the resistance of the locals to Russia rule. And if he can’t sort out the resupply issues soon, then he’s also risking mass defections/surrenders as his troops find themselves in hostile territory without weapons or armor.

If this ends in a total fiasco, a real David versus Goliath sort of thing, Putin will be visited by some Generals. And if those Generals are some old-school types, they’ll put a pistol on the table in front of him with one bullet in the chamber and tell him to do the honorable thing.

Only way I could really see that happening is if those same generals are scared enough of being made scapegoats and jailed/executed that staging a coup seems a viable option.

And now, a bit of levity, from New Zealand….

LOL these folks really are pants-on-head crazy.

I’ve been saying IRL for a couple of days now the protesters’ camp discipline is their Achilles Heel. Not exactly Great Carnac levels of divination required considering the bananapants nature of a great many of the participants. They have portaloos but they’re also shitting in the storm drains and apparently the place stinks. Covid may not be the greatest of their worries by now, and frankly there’s more than a few there I would cheerfully wish dysentery on.

Yesterday I was told that the New World supermarket up the top of Molesworth St had been completely cleaned out of aluminium foil, so I count that as confirmation that they are now, LITERALLY, the tinfoil hat brigade.

Meanwhile, I would dearly love to shake the hand of the bloke or blokette who did this. (Language advisory.)

That’s the intersection of Lambton Quay and Bowen Street, one would I pass through daily were I not working from home.

There seemed to be a sea change today among informed analysts: you started to hear people saying “huh, Ukraine could actually win this thing”, and, of course, Russia could lose this thing. When this percolates down to the Russian soldiers and the Ukrainian civilians, it makes a big difference in how far RU presses the attack and how hard UKR fights to defend their turf.

I think a big portion of it is that, as the fighting has gone on and Ukraine has held its ground, the West has started to feel more confident in supporting the resistance rather than just viewing Russian conquest as “inevitable.” That doing things like cutting off Russia from SWIFT are worth the possible economic damage that Russia might inflict. And that a weakened Russia in the wake of a loss in Ukraine is worth the risk.

Translation is: “I appreciate the fact that ordinary people take up arms. Molodec to the Ukrainians, he himself had a lot of modern weapons. We will never fight against the Ukrainians” and so on. He also condemned the robbery of Russian soldiers in shops.

Not sure what “molodec” means.

(Doesn’t include atrocities where the wounded and prisoners are murdered. Nor in cases where the injured cannot be evacuated in time from burning or destroyed buildings, vehicles, ships, aircraft, etc.)

Also assume that combat damage estimates are generally extremely optimistic.

Interesting timing.

The circumstances of the death of the Deputy General Director of the Unified Settlement Center of Gazprom for Corporate Security, whose body was found in the prestigious village of Leninskoye in the Vyborg District of the Leningrad Region, are being established. A note was found nearby, law enforcement officials told 47news. A month earlier, the body of a top manager of another division from Gazprom’s orbit was found in the same village. Both of the now deceased previously worked at Gazprom Transgaz.

As it became known to 47news, in the early morning of February 25, the police received a message about the death of a man on Rubinovaya Street in an elite cottage village in Leninsky.

The officers who arrived at the scene found the deceased in a noose in the annex garage, a note lay nearby. The deceased was identified as 61-year-old Alexander Tyulakov, Deputy General Director of the Unified Settlement Center (UCC) of Gazprom for corporate security. This division performs the functions of the treasury of the entire monopoly.

Prior to his appointment to the ERC, Alexander Tyuliakov, since March 2014, worked as Deputy General Director for Corporate Security and Human Resources at Gazprom Transgaz St. Petersburg, a 100% subsidiary of Gazprom, which was engaged in the export and transportation of fuel to nine regions of Russia.

The circumstances of the incident are established by the Investigative Committee of the Leningrad Region.

Gazprom ERC at the time of publication could not comment on the incident.

I saw a translation of that, but unfortunately, I can’t confirm it.

Molodetz means something like “good for you.” (Or me or it or them…)

anybody who’s read Gulag Archipelago knows that the Russians have a long history with this shit. They sent millions of returning POW’s off to the gulags for 10 year stretches because they’d had the audacity of surviving german prison camps. Solchenitzyn’s theory was that they’d either come in contact with prisoners of war in adjoining camps and realized that British and American troops got Red Cross packages and decent housing and meals, or that their mere survival indicated they’d somehow collaborated with the Germans. So Putin will have no trouble claiming that Ukrainians are closet nazis.

Unstated threat is use of artillery and air bombardment against Ukrainian cities resulting in massive civilian deaths and destruction of Ukraine’s urban areas.

Basically, implying that if Russia cannot have the cities, then neither can Ukraine.

And Russia’s allegiance to Hitler, where they helped carve up Poland during the initial month of WW2.

So, looking at that tranche of sanctions that’s just been announced, the most likely reason that it’s only “some banks” is because some might either be too small and insignificant or conversely, simply too big to fail for Western markets. This also leaves us room to add additional banks to the shit list and apply even more pressure

But let’s remember that disconnecting one major bank from SWIFT is a very serious sanction; disconnecting multiple banks is crippling - and to freeze the assets of a central bank is absolutely brutal for an economy that was already struggling, especially with the sanctions that were already in place/been announced.

In other words: Russia will now find it extremely difficult to import key materials for their most important sectors, many banks have already been disconnected from the global finance market and now the Russian Central Bank can’t even try to juice the economy because its assets have been frozen.

So if your bank is not able to conduct financial transactions and your central bank can no longer counteract, market panic and a run on the banks will likely follow. In a post-COVID world economy that was already facing inflation crises as it is, this is a savage left-hook, right-hook combination for the Russian economy. But when all is said and done, these are the best options that won’t drag us down the shitter with Putin and his toadies.

The West is not fucking around. We whipped out the big guns.

Second echelon’s turn. This is the major attack.

Unstated threat is use of artillery and air bombardment against Ukrainian cities resulting in massive civilian deaths and destruction of Ukraine’s urban areas.

Basically, implying that if Russia cannot have the cities, then neither can Ukraine.

West may be forced into further action if this proceeds into a major humanitarian crisis.

To expound on this further…

If the 3 million residents of Kyiv stand and fight, sending 15,000 Russians in armored vehicles there will be a death trap for the Russians. The only real option to ‘take’ Kyiv would be to burn the city down and kill off the civilian population through bombardment.

The Russians did that to Grozny after getting chased out of it several times. They also helped do that to Aleppo more recently. I do not think that the Russian military would have any moral issues with doing it to Kyiv.

The question is what the world in general, and the rest of Europe in particular, will do if it is tried on a European capitol of 3 million souls and a 1000 year history by a foreign invader.

Russia is really into propaganda. It’s hard to know what’s true and what’s not. I have no idea myself.

I might be completely wrong, but the impression I’ve got from the Russian people via observation (such as it is from the US via the Internet) is that they know their media is all state run and lies about everything, so most of them don’t believe any of it or pay any attention to it.

No one is buying the bullshit reasons Putin gave for this, but most are used to the government / Putin doing whatever it wants anyway that this is just a day ending in Y for them.

Could someone please explain how the republicans gain by registering democrats as republicans against their will?

Doesn’t this just mean that those democrats get to vote in the republican primaires?

If you are working for candidates, you will often send literature or personal postcards to those who are members of your party. If a person is registered as a Republican, they won’t receive these contacts.

Why would a party restrict “literature” to members?

Surely non-members are the ones you want to convince?

Such a gulf of understanding.

In Europe to be a “member” of a party has nothing to do with the government, it’s between you and the party. (Also it usually means that you pay). Members are the ones out in the streets distributing literature.

Ukrainian Military Fighting Bravely Against Russian Invaders

Ukrainian service members are fighting bravely — and effectively — for their country against the massive Russian onslaught, a senior defense official said at the Pentagon today.

The official, speaking on background, said Russian forces attacking toward the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv are going slower than they anticipated. “They are meeting more resistance than they expected,” the official said.

The invasion, launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Feb. 23, is designed to “decapitate” the Ukrainian government so Russia can install its own puppet regime, DOD officials said.

The attack on the capital is just one of three axes that the Russians are attacking through. The second one is aimed at Kharkiv in the northeastern part of the country and fighting continues in that region. A third attack in the south seems to be splitting with Russian forces aiming northwest toward Kyiv and northeast toward Mariupol west of that city, Russian amphibious ships are landing naval infantry. “The general assumption is that they will move … towards the northeast towards Mariupol and the Donbass region,” the official said.

“What we’ve seen over the last 24 hours, we do assess that there is greater resistance by the Ukrainians than the Russians expected,” the official said.

“We also assess over the last 24 hours that in general … the Russians have lost a little bit of their momentum,” he said. “They are not advancing as far or as fast as we believe they expected they would do. A good indicator of that is no population centers have been taken.”

The official said that Russia has yet to achieve air superiority over Ukraine. “Ukrainian air missile defense systems are still working, though they were degraded by strikes,” he said.

This includes Ukrainian aircraft that continue to engage and deny air access to Russian aircraft.

Russia continues to fire missiles into Ukraine with the total number up to around 200 since the invasion began. These are a combination of ballistic and cruise-launched missiles from land, sea and air.

Officials estimate the Russians have about a third of the forces they amassed on Ukraine’s borders and in Belarus inside Ukraine now.

Finally, he noted that Ukrainian command and control of its military is still working and that officials are still able to coordinate movements, get supplies where they are needed, target the enemy and so on.

There have certainly been casualties, but the official would not hazard a guess to the extent. “While I can’t give you exact numbers, we certainly don’t think that it has been bloodless,” the official said. “In just the last 24 hours that there have been, there has been loss of life. There have been casualties, and each and every one of them could have been avoided if Mr. Putin had taken advantage of the diplomatic options he still had available to him. [This is] his war, his choice and these are on his hands, and I think that’s important to continue to remember.”

I’m thinking more along the lines of when the Russian military brass concludes that Putin may well have not only led them to disaster, but exposed Russian military deficiencies to a global audience. The much-vaunted Russian Army could find itself becoming a laughing stock, the butt of jokes.

Too late for that. The point has been settled and the Russian army can’t fight its way out of a wet paper bag.

I really hope Ukraine has had time to prepare some surprises along the way. A storefront building along the road, for instance, filled with an enormous shaped charge, able to take out at least armored personnel carriers passing by. It isn’t so much you need to destroy all 14 groups. You just need to force them to have to stop at every parked car, every storefront along the road, every dead animal on the road that’s potentially been turned into an IED. Take the Russians even more off their schedule.

re: #292 John Hughes

It’s around 3am. The sun rises around 6:46. In nearly four hours.

Speaking of which… Time to go to bed.

Time crawls. Hopefully the Russians are getting thin on weapons and slow down to conserve. Their logistics have been beautifully inept.

in better news, the new Ipad is supposed to show up Monday. I got one of the cheap ones, and I’m kind of hoping the old Logitech keyboard will still work with it. I’d like to avoid even the 80 bucks Amazon Warehouse wants for one. Plus, I mostly use the thing as a glorified kindle. But if the keyboard works, I can do some actual writing almost anywhere, which would be nice.

Three cheers for the self preservation instinct. May those around Putin see their only out is unseating him.

Then watch him take as many people as he can down with him.

President Vladimir Putin has ushered in a crisis for his country — in its economy and identity,” the New York Times reports.

“The Kremlin is hiding the reality of the country’s attack on Ukraine from its own people, even cracking down on news outlets that call it a ‘war.’”

“But the economic carnage and societal turmoil wrought by Mr. Putin’s invasion is becoming increasingly difficult to obscure.”

I’m not sure what the one with the “UP” arrow says, but I can speculate.

“Again fuck yourselves,” I think.
