Samantha Bee: Tucker Carlson’s Cock Doc and the Far Right’s Bogus “War on Masculinity”

Politics • Views: 18,952

YouTube

Conservatives have been using anti-masculinity paranoia as a political tool for decades. Tucker’s new docuseries is just the far right’s latest attempt to justify their misogynistic and homophobic beliefs while conveniently victimizing themselves. Hint: They are not the victims. This is a digital exclusive.

A Memphis prosecutor has dropped all criminal charges against Pamela Moses, the Memphis woman who was sentenced to six years in prison for trying to register to vote,” The Guardian reports.

“Moses was convicted last year and sentenced in January. She was granted a new trial in February after the Guardian published a document showing that had not been given to her defense ahead of the trial.”

I don’t like Abbott, but I’m far more worried about DeSantis at this moment, with his attacks on truth, health, 1st amendment rights, academic freedom, the pocket books of average people, local rights, perfectly legal and legitimate corporate behavior, and many other things. And the fact that he _might_ be the front runner for the Republican nominee.

Any chance he’ll fizzle out like Scott Walker, or is that just wishful thinking?

Mike Dunford over at @questauthority indicates that he’s uncomfortable with this hearing in general. Main reason being, she hasn’t actually been tried and convicted of anything, so trying to get her thrown off the ballot for insurrection seems like it’s putting that case in the wrong venue.

The 14th Amendment doesn’t say you have to be convicted of insurrection. However, I expect the judge would want to have some direct evidence that you participated at some level in a plan to violently prevent certification of the election results.

No, but the overall point is: She hasn’t been convicted of anything, and Congress hasn’t seen fit to expel her. (Yes, I know, Republicans, but hang with the point here.) Therefore, there isn’t a clear case to be made that she’s done anything that should disqualify her. More to the point, this court is the wrong place to try and try that particular case; if they are trying to nail her on charges of insurrection, that should be done elsewhere, by other people, rather than an administrative law judge in state court.

Well as an administrative law judge myself, this ALJ’s jurisdiction is entirely dependent on Georgia state law. If it grants the ALJ jurisdiction to hear the case, then he can hear it. Of course, to keep Greene off the ballot, you have to have the goods on her, but you might recall that OJ was found civilly libel for the murders he was acquitted of in criminal court.

Reminds me of my brother’s wedding. One of his new sisters-in-law was a traffic court judge down in Texas. When I was introduced to her and that fact, my response was “Aha! So you are _the_ hanging judge!”.

If you want to marry a child in Maryland, you’re a day late. Not 100 years late. 1 day.

Yesterday, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan signed a law banning child marriage—a prohibition that many residents were likely surprised to learn wasn’t already on the books. Prior to this law, marriage was legal starting at age 15. Now, 15 and 16-year-olds can no longer get married in Maryland. And at 17, you can get married only with parental consent and the blessing of a court.

A 2021 Capital Gazette story estimates that 80-100 minors are married in Maryland each year, the vast majority of them teen girls marrying older men. Additionally, the Washington Post reports that Maryland has recently become something of a destination for child marriage, as couples from more restrictive states flocked to Maryland to wed.

And even though a 1/2 gram prerolled these days costs 50% more than a dime bag back in the day, I appreciate the tech that winds them so well (even though I don’t smoke them—I mean, I unroll and smoke a pinch here and there in a small pipe because it’s so damn potent these days).

Not a fan of leisure suits, but they are easily avoided. The only one I ever saw in the wild was worn (apparently unironically) by my 11th- grade Agebra/Trig teacher *in 1983*, the one who looked and sounded suspiciously like Dustin Hoffman, and I only saw that teacher wear it once in school.

This house I saw a couple of days ago is on topic on this thread.

These days that might be a selling point — proudly vintage! There is a group of Mid-Century Modern buffs that hold conventions here in Denver, and are trying to preserve some of the houses/neighborhoods built in the 60’s & early 70’s.

A Brit battled coronavirus for 18 months in what is thought to be the virus’s longest infection on record.

The patient, whose personal details have not been divulged, died 505 days after being diagnosed in 2020.

By the end, their immune system was severely weak.

The patient had fallen victim to 10 mutations of coronavirus - including variants Alpha, Gamma and Omicron.

British patient suffered longest-known case of Covid before dying (Metro)

Hate to say it but I don’t think the state made a good case against Greene. I didn’t see the whole thing but they didn’t have any evidence that she actually participated in the insurrection besides tweets and speeches. I don’t think that’s going to be enough.

Never underestimate the ability for the prosecution to fuck up an otherwise winnable case. Someone thought it would help if they got her to talk more. That allowed her to talk about BLM and why those people weren’t in jail but white people were. Her strategy was simply to spew bullshit and play victim. Unless the jury is comprised of fully educated and literate people (not a jury of her peers), she’s going to be empowered by the experience and claim victory.

I’m going back to watching the war in Ukraine.

FBI director Christopher Wray had the right answer to all those “what about BLM questions some of the treasonweasel caucus asked him at a hearing:

“What happens on the streets of Portland, or Minneapolis or Kenosha falls under state law. It’s not FBI jurisdiction. What happens at the Capitol is 100% a federal matter.”

If Republican fascists win, a large part of it will be because the combination of white privilege, fragility and cluelessness is incredibly conducive to the success of race-baiting GOP propaganda. It’s like a Holy Trinity of racist derp.

I think the judge decides this one, not a jury. But if the plaintiffs were gonna go with all this purely circumstantial stuff without hard evidence, there’s actually much worse stuff out there on MTG they could have used, photos with all kinds of extremists, videos of her calling for executions, etc. That bit about the movie Independence Day was just silly - if they needed to make something of Greene saying “don’t go quietly into the night” they could easily have found numerous examples of the far right using the term to specifically mean violence. It was just a weak case, in my not-a-lawyer opinion.

In decades past her testimony and history alone would have been enough to have her ridden out of town on a rail and forever been in disgrace to her party and to her country.

Instead, with out modern Conservatives and their dreams of a libertarian utopia, she will get yet another pass and indeed be rewarded with continued base support just as long as she pushes forward with her con woman charlatan game in an effort to install a racist US right wing autocracy.

Ok, so here was a fun thing. My mother-in-law has been struggling with stomach issues. She’s not well and there’s a good chance it’s cancer. My wife has been calling her almost daily and I’m reminded of the variety of dialects in Japan.

When I first went to Japan in 1982 I was in Shikoku (Matsuyama). I didn’t know any Japanese so I didn’t even know if or what kind of dialect they spoke (and of course they spoke a dialect). My second time from ‘88-‘90 was in Iwate in the far north. Their dialect was derisively called “zu-zu ben” becuase they do indeed speak with a kind of “zu” sound. For example, a famous historical place in the town I lived was called Takadachi, but the locals called it Takadatzu.

My third time was in the Nara/Kyoto area. There, among different older vocab, they also replace in many words the eastern standard sa, shi, su, se, so with ha, hi, hu, he, ho. So standard “wakarimasen” (I don’t know/understand) is “wakarimahen”.

My wife is from in between these areas, so it combines east and west. If you want to say the store is closed in standard Japanese, it will be something like “shimatte-imasu.” In the dialect that she speaks with her mom, that I just heard on the phone, to bring it full circle, would be “yattorahen.” The verb suru and the verb yaru both mean “to do” but are flexible like French “faire”. But as you can see, the proper style uses “suru” and the dialect makes a weird amalgamation of “yaru” and the Kyoto/Osaka dialect styles.

That’s all. I’m just bored and worried about my MIL.
