Lyrics:
Up late, all night
I don’t even need a reason why
Your love, is so right
I can’t wait until the morning light
To get back, when I’m through
And bring my living on home to you

Hey honey don’t you understand
I been working all day, doin the best I can
Got that easy lovin if you’d take my hand
I’m a hard working man

I’m a hard working man, yes I am

Just wait, payday
I’m gonna take you somewhere far away
Us two, sky blue
But first I gots to make a run or two
Boss man, he’s on the line
Said he’s gonna give me overtime

Hey baby don’t you understand
I been working all day, doin the best I can
Got that easy lovin if you’d take my hand
I’m a hard working man

I’m a hard working man, bet your life I am

Hey honey don’t you understand
I been working all day, doin the best I can
Got that easy lovin if you’d take my hand
I’m a hard working man
I’m a hard working man, yes I am

Hey honey don’t you understand
I been working all day, doin the best I can
Got that easy lovin if you’d take my hand
I’m a hard working man
I’m a hard working man
Yes I am
Hard working man, baby
Hard working man

Ohh. Bet your life I am, baby
I’m a hard working, darlin’

Shaun King is trending on Twitter right now because Talcum X decided to drop a hot take on the subject…

So of course all the worst RWNJ assholes on Twitter are saying that it’s ironic because King isn’t actually African American but Musk is. Because South Africa.

And they wont stop. Because he had to drop in his 2 cents where it wasn’t appropriate or asked for given his history, we see a talking point constructed in real time. Thanks again Shaun. You fucking asshat.

I just got the Wife Unit to order me carbon steel fry pan for my daily cooking. My cheapo nonstick started warping because I would use it stove top then put it under the broiler.

Hard to imagine how my oatmeal game could get better but here we are.

Brain memories are so weird. The oldest ones are the least forgettable, because everytime you think of them, you make a new copy somewhere else in your brain. So think of what you’re going for three times before you stand up.

Post its on the flip phone work too.

Your carbon steel will probably warp, too.

The vast majority do. Great cooking pans, though.

I forgot you were in the area.

My son flew Lexington to San Diego via Chicago last week for a conference. His flight home on Saturday went through Detroit. But his original flight got delayed by 1.5 hours, so he missed to connecting flight. He ended up staying in a hotel that night, and, even though they gave him a food voucher for a nearby McDonald’s, the lobby was closed when he got to the hotel. He had no car so he couldn’t do the drive-thru. He got a sandwich from a nearby store and then got up early to get his breakfast.

So the former typhoon has reached Austin and we got just under 2” of the wet stuff today here at the Bungalow Sans Souci after getting .07” the first 24 days of the month (normally one of our wettest).

The rain distribution was odd. Fifteen miles to our south, .05”. Ten miles to our east, 3.5”.

A rain blob of between 1” and 3” between us and Fredericksburg to our WSW and just north of that almost nothing in the rest of the Hill Country which desperately needed the rain. The bottom line is that the City of Austin’s water supply got almost nothing in its reservoirs and the riverine systems to our west. Locally a win, but regionally a popcorn fart of a rain system.

{sigh}

Gonna be a brutal summer, innit?

Something may be a little off with this guy.

Dr. Deborah Birx said Monday that former President Donald Trump’s infamous ‘bleach’ comments came about because researchers were looking into whether disinfectant would be needed to kill COVID-19 on playgrounds, or if sunlight would do the trick.

‘This was a tragedy on many levels,’ Birx told George Stephanopoulos on Good Morning America. ‘The first tragedy is the whole point of asking the DHS scientists to do the work was so children could get outside and play on playgrounds.’

Speaking of Musk & Tesla…

From Avweb

Video has emerged of the collision of a driverless Tesla that collided with the tail of Cirrus VisionJet at a small airport in Washington State. Initial reports via a Reddit video suggest the car was being operated on its “Summon” feature in which the operator calls the car on a cellphone to move it to a more convenient location. The operator had to be on hand when this happened because the function apparently only works within line of sight. In this case, the Tesla apparently decided the way to its master’s preferred location was through the Cirrus and that will no doubt be of interest to a variety of regulators.

The incident reportedly happened at Felts Field, near Spokane, at an event last week to celebrate the opening of a new hangar for Northwest Flight Service, the regional service and training center for Cirrus. Speculation on sites and forums that specialize in Tesla topics is that the sensors that normally keep Teslas from bumping into things don’t look up high enough to see the tail of an airplane four feet above the ground. The car’s windshield hit the tail and spun the plane about 90 degrees, but it’s not clear how much damage was done to the machines.

Your carbon steel will probably warp, too.

The vast majority do. Great cooking pans, though.

Got dammit. I’ll probably get a hybrid stainless ply then as long as I have a glass top.

My cast iron is thick and still flat, doubt I’ll warp that bugger. Although there’s dudes who make videos to fix warped pans.

So I’m very undecided and obsessing right now.

Who Was Mike Pence’s Secret Service Detail Working for on January 6?
Over the weekend, Rep. Jamie Raskin suggested Pence wasn’t convinced it was him.esquire.com

From NBC News:
Speaking about the threats to Pence on Jan. 6 and the chants by rioters to hang him, Raskin said the vice president’s Secret Service agents — including one who was carrying the nuclear football — ran down to an undisclosed place in the Capitol. Those agents, who Raskin said he suspects were reporting to Trump’s Secret Service agents, were trying to whisk Pence away from the Capitol. Pence then “uttered what I think are the six most chilling words of this entire thing I’ve seen so far: ‘I’m not getting in that car,’” Raskin said. “He knew exactly what this inside coup they had planned for was going to do,” Raskin said.

I caught the greatest King of the Hill episode earlier today. Season 6, episode 8, “Joust Like a Woman.” Alan Rickman is playing a Texan who is the king in a renaissance fair. His a major jerk to the women, and pays for it in the end. The two hilarious parts are when Peggy comments on his mediocre British accent, and, when he’s served lawsuit papers, he “talks like a Texan.”

It’s a $100 investment, at most. I once stupidly paid more than this for a bottle of single malt. My Scots brother-in-law set me to rights that price was not the deciding factor in single malts, but references.

All good sausage is made from the unmentionable bits. That’s the whole bit behind Bismark’s crack about “making sausage”. Never think about what goes into it; just enjoy it instead.

A senior leader in the Canadian Armed Forces has retired and travelled to Ukraine to help defend the country from Russia’s invasion while still under investigation for alleged sexual misconduct.

The Department of National Defence confirmed Thursday that lieutenant-general Trevor Cadieu retired on April 5 after more than 30 years in uniform, even as military police continue their investigation into his conduct.

Several defence sources say Cadieu has since headed to Ukraine to volunteer to help fight back against a Russian invasion that is about to enter its third month. The sources were not authorized to comment publicly on his whereabouts.

You should try your next batch with some Spanish chorizo (not Mexican- completely different sausage) rather than hot Italian. So much better.

Mexican chorizo, for those unaware, is the rest of the pig (you know, lips, glands, and assholes), while Spanish chorizo is a king among sausages. It is absolutely delicious and fit for the finest tapas in Christendom.

I’ve always wondered what part of the soy soyrizo is… *chuckles*

Dinesh D’Souza latest bucket of spit, “2000 Mules” is due to be released soon. It’s premise is that 2020 election ballots in all the swing states Trump lost are suspicious because they were delivered to drop boxes by “mules” working for Get Out The Vote Groups.

And they point to cell phone tower data that matches the “mules” to drop boxes at the time the ballots were delivered.

Somehow, this is suspicious because….well it has to be.

The film offers zero evidence that the ballots themselves are illegitimate.

The sale only makes sense in the context of various wealthy individuals or corporations who have snapped up small town newspapers, run them into the ground, and then ended their publication so that the only papers available are those run by other large corporations who are more likely to toe the line or enforce the line than they are hire people who will buck authority.

Musk has not bought Twitter with the intent of making money from it or seeing it expand, he’s bought it because he wants to control what can and can’t be said, and has the money to make that happen.

I think it’s just a howl of impotent rage, saber-rattling. The Russians are terrified of Western arms shipments into Ukraine because not only are they beginning to sense that they’ve already lost in Ukraine but if - let’s say sometime this year - the Ukrainians can launch (and sustain) a successful counteroffensive and drive the Russians out of the country (and pin them down in Crimea to the point where they completely lose freedom of action), then Putin will find himself confronted with a fiasco comparable to the 1905 Russo-Japanese War.

And he’s gonna have to find a way to sell that fiasco to the Russian people - and that’s not going to be an easy sale.

Vlad probably knows by now that even if the Russian Army busts out its Cold War stockpile and starts filling the ranks with retirees to make up for lack of numbers, that’s still a process of weeks or months, while Ukraine has been actively working to build up its own reservist ranks since the fighting began. With NATO shipping bigger weapons into Ukraine now that they see the tide of war turning, Vlad’s greatest nightmare scenario is looking plausible: Total failure and Russian forces sent packing in the most humiliating fashion possible.

I’ve suspected for awhile now that the change in war goals was about trying to make it appear as though there was a way out of the fighting in the hope that NATO would force Zelensky to seek a negotiated peace. The decision by NATO to instead ramp up the number and types of weapons being provided has left Moscow realizing there’s no way out of this war other than victory or defeat.

In a bit of related news to NATO countries sending more gear:

Federal Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) wants to push further arms deliveries to Ukraine. According to information given to SPIEGEL, the SPD minister will announce at a Ukraine conference hastily convened by the US at Ramstein Air Force Base in the morning that Germany wants to enable the delivery of Gepard anti-aircraft tanks. In addition, Ukrainian soldiers will be trained on the Panzerhaubitze 2000 system, which the Netherlands intends to supply to the Ukrainian army.

With these two announcements, Lambrecht wants to try to mitigate the harsh criticism of Germany in terms of arms deliveries. The federal government has been criticized for weeks for its hesitant attitude. Lambrecht therefore wants to emphasize once again to the around 20 defense ministers who have traveled there that the federal government has marked a real turning point with the 100 billion special package for the Bundeswehr and the first arms deliveries.

Yep, for Russia there’s nothing else but victory in Ukraine or defeat. And if they’re defeated - the nightmare scenario in which the Russian Army is driven back across the border - then it’s going to be exceedingly difficult for Putin and his propagandists to spin it as some kind of victory. Far too many Russians will start angrily saying, “Then what was all this for?!” or “And we have been humiliated yet again by the West and now we’ll never be taken seriously!”

Such a defeat will likely produce a profound cultural trauma in the Russian psyche.

I’ve noticed that the bulk of weaponry being confirmed as on the way or already in Ukraine is artillery, which seems geared towards addressing Russian battle doctrine putting a big emphasis on artillery as both offensive and defensive in nature. If Russia has to hold fixed positions, then their artillery has little room for shoot-and-scoot. All the Ukrainians have to do is zero in where the Russian artillery is and then drop a few thousand pounds of heavy metal on their heads. Same is true for tanks in hull-down positions and infantry in entrenchments.

Seems that the turns have tables and the Russians are about to learn what it’s like to get shelled relentlessly and without mercy.

One of the headaches of working at an “extended stay” hotel is dealing with “transients” or folks who are here for a week or less. These are people who book us either because A) there’s virtually nothing available in the city or B) they want to have a kitchen during their vacation. Why are they a headache? Because unlike the long-term stays who usually will realize they’re stuck in a place for awhile and go out to buy supplies, these guests instead think we’re supposed to provide everything for them and then get upset when we don’t have what they need in the middle of the night. Such as the fellow who just came down to ask me for a coffee maker since we offer them for the rooms, only to then ask me if we also provide coffee and walk away in disgust when I said if he wanted coffee for the machine he needed to go out to buy some.

All we’ve ever had is a market in the lobby area, which has a lot to do hotel companies wanting to suck every dollar out of guest wallets as they can. Vendors don’t offer more than a partial cut of their profits to the company for the privilege of having their machines on-property, compared to being able to sell things at a considerable mark-up directly to guests. When the last property I worked for did their renovations to become a franchise for Starwood, as soon as the market was finished and stocked, the vending machines disappeared from the property. Which confused and disappointed the tourists because vending machines tend to be “cheap” compared to hotel markets.

America ain’t the only place where school shootings happen….

Translated, from Russian:

On Tuesday, an unidentified person broke into a kindergarten near Ulyanovsk and opened fire, according to preliminary data, two children and a nanny were killed, the shooter committed suicide. This is reported by “Interfax” .

It is alleged that an unknown person with a weapon opened fire in a kindergarten in the village of Veshkayma during “quiet time”. According to a number of reports, one employee of the kindergarten was injured.

The authorities of the Ulyanovsk region confirmed the death of four people. According to preliminary data, the killed children - a boy and a girl - were 5 and 6 years old.

Baza reports that a double-barreled shotgun was found at the crime scene. It is registered in the name of 68-year-old Alexander Dronin, but so far there is no evidence that he was the shooter. It is also alleged that there were no guards in the kindergarten.

It’s a $100 investment, at most. I once stupidly paid more than this for a bottle of single malt. My Scots brother-in-law set me to rights that price was not the deciding factor in single malts, but references.

Damn good advice.

Sick of people calling everything in crypto a Ponzi scheme. Some crypto projects are pump and dump schemes, while others are pyramid schemes. Others are just standard issue fraud. Others are just middlemen skimming of the top. Stop glossing over the diversity in the industry.

as I understand, cryptos originated because people no longer trust national governments to manage a currency.

So they would rather put their faith and their financial fortunes in a shadowy group of people they have never seen and cannot even physically locate

So I’ve finally binge-watched season 2 of Picard (at least through episode 8).

I find it a bit odd but also not bad.

My take on contemporary Star Trek is that the acting and production is so much better than either TOS or the TNG-era (or even the Enterprise show) it is really a decent show…. if you’re not trying to recreate the 1990’s era TV show.

The scriptwriting of Picard is much much better than TNG.

The story is no more reasonable, however.

Was visiting with some on my fraternity brothers last week. Most of the ones I have been in steady touch with since university days.

There was the usual discussions about “where is so-and-so nowadays?” to catch up on this or that since there are loose networks and some people are more active on using Facebook* to track stuff.

Someone made the observation of “Well, if you met one of them, what sort of conversation would it be? Beyond a five minute summary of career, family, and maybe a couple of interesting events everything else would probably be very mundane and not of interest outside of that family group.”

I thought that was a pretty profound and accurate observation. Beyond a few persons I really do not care about the personal details of a lot of people from my past.

* - I also have found it odd to get Facebook friend requests from people whose last interactions with me (or the fraternity who I was acting as a officer of) forty years ago were of a “screw you” variety as they deliberately did things designed to annoy me or broke contracts/agreements. My only guess is that they are trying to recapture something of their past via social media.

Yeah, they all know that they’re going to shred the church/state 1A barrier and don’t care.

They’ll carve out an exception if a Satanist or Cthulhu believer wants to have a prayer circle, because it’ll protect the kids from unwarranted exposure to “bad things” when there’s a reason the Founders created the 1A freedom of religion - we don’t permit a state sponsored religion.

i had an idea and what better place to air it than here
maybe it’s not so brilliant
maybe it’s been thought of lots of times already

i was just stretching before a run and my head went ‘ding’.
just an idle curiosity about twitter et al

all these services work on a similar architectural model
a database of users
links to followers
blocks, etc
and then messages, replies, forwards etc

and a lot of storage and processing power somewhere

so i was musing what if some brilliant folks take the next phase of short and frequent messaging to be more like email

How? I dont know.

Just a decoupling of the vast database of accounts linked to followers.
With a proliferation of your choice of message reader - just like you do with email.

maybe the database of users followers blocks etc is not centralized.
then it’s not under the control of one company (or one person)
not quite a contacts list, but who knows.
then the idea of being stuck / ‘captive’ cause everyone’s there or moving and losing your followers etc, goes away

Some geniuses figure it out

and then it’s a new game

Nah, what he’ll pull up are studies that say that wearing masks doesn’t protect 100% against getting sick. And yeah, they don’t, but the purpose of wearing masks isn’t about protection, it’s about retarding the spread of a virus in coordination with social distancing. If a person wears a mask and maintains a 6ft distance, then the odds of others around them being exposed to the virus are greatly reduced.

But that’s not the narrative they want to sell, the narrative they want is that wearing a mask doesn’t keep you from getting sick and that’s why it was “wrong” to tell people to wear them.

Here’s a video I just saw. It explains that since Covid-19 isn’t a purely aerosolized viral disease, it’s a good idea to wear a mask. Moron, indeed.

If a person wears a mask and maintains a 6ft distance, then the odds of others around them being exposed to the virus are greatly reduced.

But that’s not the narrative they want to sell, the narrative they want is that wearing a mask doesn’t keep you from getting sick and that’s why it was “wrong” to tell people to wear them.

they also dont get that the idea of sweeping public policy isnt to achieve 100% effectiveness at anything.

of course everyone wont wear a mask or vaccinate.
of course everyone wearing masks wont do it right all the time.

it’s reduction as compared to no policy at all.

I replaced my $100 with airtime Tracfone with a $150 with no airtime Tracfone.
What a difference. Other than the speaker, it’s as nice as my old expensive S8 was, and I have no need to use that speaker to play music. The camera is entirely acceptable, so I don’t have to use my S6 with no service as a camera anymore.

I’m not a fan of the hole in the screen for the front-facing camera, but I can live with it.

Vending machines are also available 24x7, without requiring any interaction with staff. Much faster and more convenient.

An interesting development:

(via machine translation)

Germany is now prepared for a halt to Russian oil supplies, according to Robert Habeck. “Today I can say that an embargo has become manageable for Germany,” the German Economics Minister said after a meeting with his Polish colleague Anna Moskwa in Warsaw.

The share of Russian oil is now only around twelve percent. And this share is accounted for solely by deliveries for the PCK refinery in Schwedt an der Oder. Here, he said, one is looking for an alternative. “This alternative is the task of the next few days,” said the Green politician. He assumes that it is indeed only a matter of days.

Ahead of the meeting in Warsaw, it was said that the Polish port of Gdansk could play an important role in ensuring supplies to Schwedt by ship. Schwedt is connected to a pipeline from Russia, and the PCK refinery is controlled by the Russian state-owned Rosneft.

The whole point is the tacit acceptance. It’s the same deal with the party’s overt racism and bigotry in their leaders. Particular voters may not be racist themselves, but are ok enough with it to overlook it, not see it as a necessary factor to concern themselves with, or simply see it as an acceptable trade off for getting their way. And it’s not as if there’s a good excuse that they never saw these things when the leadership is blaring them out like foghorns constantly. They’re either useful idiots or tacit collaborators.

You never see liberals crying, begging to be allowed on Fox News. You never see liberal politicians getting their panties in a wad over not being invited on any of the scummy scammy right wing Fox wanna-bees. There is a reason for that. The right wing mindset is based largely on inflicting cruelty towards other people and to have the constant need for a scapegoat. They typically beg for liberals to join in order to set up punching bags where sheer mindless rage volume drowns out any and all reason.

Liberal outlets typically are created to spread actual real life verifiable information and to specifically to lock out those trolls, miscreants and those who exist purely to spread as much hate and chaos as possible. Should the right wing gain control they will enact laws and judicial edicts that require unlimited access for “Conservative voices” to spread their bile and cruelty.

Actually, I’m going to argue that point. The GOP is getting to the point where they don’t actually give a fuck what the majority of their voters want. They are literally ruling by fiat, basically telling their voters to go pound sand because the most vocal minority in their base is saying they want this. Remember, multiple polls show that the majority OF REPUBLICANS - not just voters, but specifically the people we’re tarring with a broad brush here - do not support most of these policies, but they’re getting enacted anyway, purely because they have the power and the opportunity to win the culture war NOW, and then gerrymander and/or vote-suppress their way into not facing consequences for it from their angry voter base.

As I pointed out above though: they still keep voting Republican. Even if they said they disapproved of these policies, many of them go right on voting for Republican still because they’re either willing to accept these things as a tradeoff for getting what they really want, or they care enough in their opposition to let it influence their vote. They may be voting to enact these things now, but it’s not as if most of these issues flew in out from the ether. They’ve been long GOP hobby horses that they just happen to have the power to enact now…precisely because people willing to accept heinous actions as a trade off keep voting them in.

You are describing about 100 million people as though they share the attitudes and actions of their worst minority. It might feel justified, but it doesn’t serve politically.

If you don’t discuss politics with them or you limit yourself to the few areas of agreement (Ukraine good, Putin bad) with them, the conversation is fine. But anything else, and the racism and book banning and Trump worship comes crawling out. It may be possible, if you have a team of deprogrammers at your call, to change their mind. It’s not a minority of the party — it’s a majority of the party who believe that the election was “stolen” and who are in favor of voting restrictions that would limit the ability of minorities and the poor to vote and who fulminate against immigrants of color and who are racist to the core.

If that is the case, why do these people keep getting elected/reelected? Sure you can ask a bunch of people if they support XXX law or person and get some number either in support of or against said law/person. Those numbers MAY even actually reflect what they feel/want, but the only numbers that actually matter in the end is the final vote tally and they seem to be able to get those votes just fine.

The GOP leadership knows what gets their base riled up, we have seen their constituency time and time again oppose bills that would ultimately help them (ACA, Build Back Better), or conversely support bills that will raise their taxes (defrocking Disney) or cut their benefits - in order to own the liberals.

Yeah, I feel like a lot of the time, what’s been going on is that the GOP voters focus on their one chosen cause and vote for that to the exclusion of everything else, whereas Democratic voters tend to take an “all or nothing” approach: “This candidate doesn’t support this one out of my 15 pet causes, so I’m voting for Bernie.” The GOP is extremely good at minimizing their controversial or outrageous voting record in order to hit the highlights that they know will draw in the majority of their base come November.

I do want to point out that a lot of this discussion is being focused on ‘Republican voters’. Not ‘people who voted for Republicans’, but self-identified Republicans. This is why I and others are pointing out their willingness to chuck civility to the win and accept bad shit, because they’re the ones who are willing to overtly identify and count themselves amongst the party, rather than folks who might have gotten duped by the BS for a particular election and genuinely regretted it (though it’s always worth seeing how much of that holds up with previous voting patterns).

my point is he made this observation in 2003.

of course he answers his own question - it’s all because of the republican’s brutal struggle to take, hold and retain office (power)

Why is politics no longer a clash of value systems, each of which is in some way valid; a competition between basically well-intentioned people who see the world differently?

Why has it become, not even a conflict of interests, but instead a degenerative, brutal struggle for office in which each side with righteous indignation believes only the other is and only can be capable of behaving despicably?

and p.s. -
regardless of all the obits, orrin hatch was not one of those referred to in the first paragraph.

As long as people use social media as a source of information on important matters of politics, world events, science, health and safety, our world is in a downward spiral…

Except for the number of today’s users with access, I don’t consider today’s social media to be much different than the internet in the 1990’s, e.g. Netcom newsgroups’ vitriolic flame wars.

Everything, including accusations of sexual abuse, was tolerated except for the ability to cancel someone else’s newsgroup post - which occurred from time to time - until Netcom put a stop to that.

The flame wars went on.

Of the two Republicans I consistently interact with one has pretty much written the party off since 2016 (even a bit before) as going batshit then and gotten worse since then. And he is not a “lockstep” voter; e.g. he will and has voted for Democrats, including Clinton and Biden. He self describes as a “fiscal conservative, social liberal” and essentially has a lot of views similar to mine. To a degree he is only a Republican due to having not bothered enough to change his registration to something else.

The other. Well, there is a lot of racist underpinnings coming out in the wash when he gets talking. BLM is used as a standard bogeyman.* Cannot attest to the source of it, but I expect he stays submerged in areas that support his viewpoint of the world.

* - A anti-BLM outburst on Facebook got him blasted heavily by a number of people I know. One reason I think he posts a lot less there.

the differences between the parties is obvious

dems are inclusive
yeah they want some of your taxes - not a lot for most people.
because we assume social security etc do exist and must be funded to pay for you yourself later.
and that there are social goods everyone should participate in and may need, and so should contribute to, if and as they can.

R’s are exclusive - they want to kick people off of things make them not anyone else’s problem - i have, and if you don’t, that’s tough. We’re not gonna help.

Dem’s idea of government is a sort of compassion, not hatred. Government by empathy, not by fear.

R’s America is unjust, unequal, unforgiving (compassionless) (liberty and justice for some (i.e. us)).

In D’s America: liberty and justice *for all*. A better life for everyone. (see right out of the pledge.)

Another difference is, in general, Republicans want to lobby for court sanctioned “freedom to…”. Dems tend to want constitutional “freedom from…”

I am conservative by nature, I like the notion of individual initiative and personal responsibility. I think the Free Market can be a useful mechanism for balancing supply and demand and directing flows of capital to where they do the most benefit.

I don’t think that asking individuals and families with limited incomes and resources to negotiate one-on-one with multi-billion-dollar international corporations for terms of employment, insurance coverage or financial services constitutes a “level playing field”.

And I believe that markets are not some divine state of grace that we seek to achieve, but a human construct, a form of infrastructure, both physical and legislative/regulatory that needs to be maintained by persons acting outside the market to ensure that it benefits everyone: employers as well as employees, producers as well as consumers, lenders as well as borrowers.

BOSTON (AP) — For years, Vincent Gillespie waged a legal battle to try to gain control of hundreds of paintings by his father — renowned postwar American artist Gregory Gillespie.

On Jan. 6, 2021, prosecutors say, Gillespie engaged in a very different kind of battle, joining rioters as they tried to wrest control of the U.S. Capitol from the federal government in one of the most violent confrontations of the riot.

Gillespie, who investigators say was identified by half a dozen sources from images taken that day, was among a mob trying to force its way through a tunnel at the Lower West Terrace of the Capitol — an assault that almost succeeded by his own description.

“We were almost overpowering them,” Gillespie, blood visible on his scalp from the clash, told an Associated Press journalist at the scene that day. “If you had like another 15, 20 guys behind us pushing I think we could have won it.”

The Contractual Impossibility of Unwinding Disney’s Reedy Creek
news.bloombergtax.com

Florida simply cannot promise to prospective bondholders that it won’t interfere with Reedy Creek, and then dissolve Reedy Creek. If Reedy Creek is ever dissolved, it would be a monumental and complicated enterprise even on a years-long timeline. The district has a nine-figure annual budget for expenditures, and even ignoring its various debts, it has a plethora of other contracts that somehow would have to be assigned to and divided between Orange and Osceola counties. However, the dissolution will have to wait until all of its bonds are paid in full.
