LYRICS
I wish that I could freeze time
Go to the wild
Soak up the quiet
Til I’m dripping wet with it
Then I would drive home
Go to my room
Wring myself out
That would be the end of it
Instead it’s white noise
Sufferingly loud
It’s wearing me down
I’m up to my ears in it
It’s like a wave break
Into my head
Again and again
How are you not hearing it

The sound the sound the sound the sound the sound the sound the sound the sound
I’d burn the city to the ground to turn it down

Silence is golden

Like a flock of birds flung out of the trees into the sky
Any sound will set me off
I’m gonna hurl now
Strapped to my seat and into the ride
Somebody please let me off
Maybe I’ll break
Just shatter, disperse
Like cracks in a glass
And never hold a drink again
Hey there’s a feedback making it worse
A million hertz
I can hear the ring again

The sound the sound the sound the sound the sound the sound the sound the sound
I’d burn the city to the ground to turn it down

It’s building to a siren screaming
It’s building to a jet plane engine
Building to 6am construction
It’s building and building and building until I can’t function at all

Silence is golden

My desire for finding the latest information has begun to reach its apex. I’ve followed a number of accounts now that seem to have the early drop on the happenings, but as I visit and read their timelines, I find they’re all retweeting each other…it’s yet another circle of information bias. God I fucking hate Twitter sometimes.

Sigh…time to focus on something else for a bit and wait for the fog of war to clear. I read a couple more small towns Russia held are suddenly empty of Russians…like they just packed their shit and left. Hoping for confirmation of that in the next day or so. Be good as one town is right next to the rail line feeding the Izyum front for Russia.

My wife flipped the TV to the NBC show “Who Do You Think You Are?” a version of finding your roots not lead by a black man. It’s got Allison Janney. She had an ancestor that was part of the Jamestown colony, traveled back to England when that failed, and then came back over on the mayflower.

I almost feel sorry for poor Madison. He thought he was on the right wing gravy train until he blabbed a teensy bit too freely about his former “colleagues.” And suddenly everything changed.

He used money to pay off his campaign debt that he would have only been able to use if he had won the primary.

Donors are allowed to give X dollars for the primary, and another X for the general. The campaign is supposed to hold the donations for the general, and give it back if he loses the primary. Instead, Madison spent the money in the primary. And then lost. And no longer had it to return when he was supposed to.

Thousands driving on the Interstate 35 got a big reminder it was Good Friday.
For the eighth straight year Victorious Life Church members portrayed the final moments of Jesus’ life.
Ricky Ganaway, man behind the event, said he was excited to see how much it has grown.

In more recent Waco Baptist news:

Just took a walk around the neighborhood park and I saw that the city put up some eviction notices. A guy has been camping in the woods for over two years now - knows what he’s doing as he’s survived two Minnesota winters back there. Small park at only 72 acres and you really had to look to see his site. City has been sending social workers to check on him, probably weekly, but he hasn’t wanted to leave. Not sure what caused the city to act though but likely had to do with a second guy setting up a less-discreet different camp and that’s probably too much for a suburb to tolerate.

Wednesday is eviction day - hope that it happens safely and he finally takes up the offers for help.

WDYTYA has been around for years, started as a BBC show, then an American spin-off came about some years back.

After a hiatus of a couple of years the US version came back for a limited run again on NBC this year.

I prefer the BBC version, as usual, because the lack of commercial breaks make for longer shows. However, there were shows that were produced for both the UK and US, with different narrators. The US narrator is ok, but the verbiage for American audiences is dumbed down.

A few years back the UK version did Ian McKellen. As you’d expect, no one quite reads a death record like Ian.

Humid this afternoon but fortunately thunderstorms over the mountains in northern Baja brought us some cloud cover, and I saw a few cloud tops to the east also. Somewhere over there it probably rained as we’re getting a cool breeze.

Definitely monsoon season.

We could use a lot of rain, but unless there is a tropical storm that works its way up the Gulf of California we’re not going to get any.

Texas gasoline prices

Gas is down to 3.533 in Webb County, Texas, having left the 4s behind and already halfway back toward the 2 dollar range. State average is 3.870, down from 3.889 yesterday.
Biden received 61.9% of the vote in Webb County in 2020.

Roberts County, where Cheeto received 96.2% of the vote in 2020 (529 to 17 for Biden) has the highest prices in the state by a wide margin at 4.719.

Las Vegas police are upset at this judge:

A Black judge with jurisdiction over Clark County, and notably its Las Vegas strip, is being targeted by a local police union for advising a Black suspect before her for a probation hearing to use caution with police.

“You’re a Black man in America,” 8th Judicial District Court Judge Erika Ballou told the defendant. “You know you don’t want to be nowhere where cops are. You know you don’t want to be nowhere where cops are cause I know I don’t, and I’m a middle-aged, middle-class Black woman. I don’t want to be around where the cops are because I don’t know if I’m going to walk away alive or not.”

I gave these two white guys who have some influence on “progressive Christians” hell, because while they’re “right” about Christian Nationalism, they still hold an anti-abortion position and they don’t care. So fuck them, I gave them an earful.

I was careful not to cuss them out because Shane blocked in the past for using intemperate four-letter Anglo-Saxonisms.

The anti-abortion position forwarded as the stalking horse for striking down school segregation? That anti-abortion position? The anti-abortion position Protestants did not care about at all until people like Ralph Reed used it to sell racist hatred to get Ronald Reagan elected?

Are they really “progressives?” (I don’t care about the Christian part.)

Jo Luehmann seems to live for irritating Evangelical Theobros. That said, it does have real consequences, these asshats made it unsafe for her to be on a local school board because of threats to the school.

The verses referenced here are Romans 16:17-18 and yeah, I’m referencing Paul. For the record, Paul was sending a letter to the Roman believers, whom he had not met, and was basically trying to warn them off doctrines he didn’t teach. I’ll be honest, it’s hard to take works like this seriously when it looks for all the world like Paul is fighting a religious turf war.

Two decades of Alzheimer’s research may be based on deliberate fraud that has cost millions of lives

And people still doubt me when I point out that scientists in general hate frauds. Like this example here. Nearly 20 years of derivative research, most likely worthless. Billions of dollars. Millions of lives. Human suffering unknown. Number of man-hours research in vain, unknown. A 20 year dead end. Lots of reearchers more than likely having to go back and vet 20 years worth of research to excise the knock off effects of that fraud two decades ago…
You bet your life there’s going to be a lot of very pissed off people. You wonder why the response to the Ivermectin and HCQ “studies” was so rancorous? Because had other researchers not caught it, they might’ve been led down a similarly long and devastating wild goose chase.

Shane Claiborne is anti-death penalty and anti-gun proliferation (he’s a swords into plowshares guy) and has my grudging respect for getting arrested at the Supreme Court protesting against the death penalty. But he’s also a white dude who basically parachuted into a Black Philadelphia neighborhood and I dunno, I have issues with that.

As for Brian Zahnd, he used to be a hardcore Charismatic/Word of Faith guy who started backing out of that world at the beginning of the ’00s. He’s now considered persona non grata among that group (and among Evangelicals in general) because he has dumped Penal Substitutionary Atonement (i.e., the idea that Jesus had to die as a blood sacrifice to God the Father in order to pay for our sins). He’s pretty virulently anti-abortion and he bases it on readings of ante-Nicene documents. These are legit readings, but you have to remember, women had no say in any of this. I don’t CARE what some guy said in the Didache 1900 years ago about abortion, that guy probably also saw women as male property. So, nope.

Thank you for the read. The terrible burdens that couple carry with no support is too common and infuriating. I’m kind of shocked they are allowed to stay in a rest area. I took a short nap in my car at a rest stop (in Georgia) and had a cop tapping the window telling me to move along.

Japan’s Sakurajima volcano erupts, triggering an evacuation

TOKYO — A volcano on Japan’s main southern island of Kyushu erupted Sunday night, spewing ash and rocks. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in nearby towns but residents were advised to evacuate.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency said Sakurajima volcano erupted at around 8:05 p.m., blowing off large rocks as far as 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) away in the southern prefecture of Kagoshima.

Footage on Japan’s NHK public television showed orange flames flashing near the crater and dark smoke of ash billowing from the mountaintop high up into the night sky.

Truthfully, when the icon of a religion is the symbol of torture and death, how ta fuck can it not be a Death cult!

As I understand, the Early Christians never portrayed the Crucifixion, the earliest known depiction dates from the 4th century. They were much more concerned with his miracles and his resurrection than with the whole suffering thing.

I remember Howie and Steven Mendoza coming back from Catholic catechism and telling us about how St. Andrew was crucified on an X-shaped cross and St Peter upside down and St. Bartholomew skinned alive and St Sebastian shot full of arrows, and really wondered even as a kid about what a sick death cult that church was.

oops, another thing we didn’t think about in our enthusiasm for keeping foreigners out:

Disabled drivers are being warned that their blue badges may not be accepted in popular European holiday destinations this summer due to Brexit.

Ministers are negotiating the status of the badges - which were recognised when the UK was in the EU - with 11 nations.

France, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy are among those “undecided” on recognising the discs, which help people park closer to a destination.

Wrong, Bishop Berg.

Centuries of mathematicians and astronomers working out Lagrange points and orbital mechanics, decades of mechanical and software engineers working out rocketry, untold billions of dollars spent by numerous nations to develop the technology to create the James Webb telescope to explore the deepest reaches of space. You don’t get to claim this proves the glory of God.

As Webb Telescope shows, the heavens declare the glory of God (Pueblo, Colo. Chieftan

To paraphrase a quote from one NASA scientist, “We don’t know what we don’t know yet.”

The gorgeous images speak of the lifting of a veil and a new understanding of an ancient truth: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day pours forth the story; night after night whispers the knowledge…. (Ps 19).”

What we will learn will dawn slowly and only begin to hint at the majesty of God’s design. Indeed, we don’t know what we don’t know yet.

As vast and timeless is creation, and endless its spectral landscapes, how do we see ourselves in its midst? When I first beheld the Webb Telescope revelations, I once again felt my own insignificance. Who am I, Lord, that you should have taken such care to bring me into existence amidst such wonders?

allow me to bring a Jewish view…

Those humans you mention, they maybe didn’t realize they were doing God’s work, but that’s what it was.

Astrophysics, advanced mathematics, biochemistry, DNA, etc, are all the language of the creator. We don’t quite understand what he’s trying to say, but that’s how he says it, and it’s a holy thing to try to figure it out. The purpose of our brains is to learn, to discover, to analyze, to try to understand…

That’s why my Sunday school classroom had 3 portraits on the wall — drawings of Moses and Maimonedes, and a photo of Einstein. Our greatest thinkers, who told us how to get closer to the divine.

Apple fanatics with deep pockets can secure a piece of history in the form of Steve Jobs’ original prototype for the company’s first-ever computer.

RR Auction is taking bids on Jobs’ original design for the “Apple 1” computer - the same prototype that “resulted in Apple Computer’s first big order and changed the course of the company.”

The highest current bid for the prototype was $229,755 as of Friday afternoon. Bidding runs through Aug. 18, meaning the final price is likely to rise much higher by the time the auction closes.

The Jobs-designed device was “hand-soldered” by fellow Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in 1976. The pair used the prototype to secure their first order from local computer store owner Paul Terrell, according to an auction listing.

It’s not “in a week”. It’s the whole “Biden has Alzheimer’s” schtick that they’ve been going on about since they failed their coup attempt. Trump’s crazy-ass-doctor-turned-representative is just rabbiting on about how he wants to grill the WH doctor on Biden’s mental health, but he can’t, because, well, maybe the doctor has better things to do than fuck around with a drooling moron.

I cannot comment on Rightwingconspirator’s comment regarding the Highland Park mass-murder at the Independence Day Parade there, as the post has been archived and comments are no longer allowed. The comment on my post was:

I’m starting to think (against the rules/protocol) that a half flag display makes sense as often as we have mass murder shootings. Since those happen about once a week, and each deserves a ten-day remembrance… We get a permanent half-mast flag as a sad protest and in deserved respect. Ugh.

It is not against protocol. The US Flag Code does not place restrictions on when the President can order the flag to be placed at half-mast. At least in theory, he could promulgate a proclamation ordering the flag to half-mast for the entirety of his presidency. There is no restriction in the US Flag Code on when the President can order the flag to half-mast, or for how long.

Elon Musk is laughing off wild reports he had a friendship-ruining affair with Google co-founder Sergey Brin’s wife — sending The Post a photo of himself happily hanging out with his longtime pal even as the rumors spread.

Musk, 51, insisted the claims of a fling with his bestie’s estranged wife, Nicole Shanahan, were “total bs” — even quipping, “Haven’t even had sex in ages (sigh).”

The world’s richest man also sent The Post a photo showing him partying with Brin, 48, who was supposed to have cooled their bromance after the alleged betrayal.

“Took this pic only two hours ago,” Musk told The Post of the photo of him laughing while rubbing shoulders with his fellow billionaire.

The Tesla mogul turned serious to strongly deny the widely-spread Wall Street Journal report that claimed a December fling was behind Brin’s divorce.

Always look on the bright side of life? Those dumbasses might get themselves heat stroke?

Do they actually think that they’re dying for someone else’s sins? Because they’re not. This is just value signaling that they think they’re more Christ-like than Christians who follow Christ’s teachings.

They don’t care about the teachings, just the appearance of being “Christian”.

Can’t speak for those individuals, but those cross-sittings (also lenten floggings) have been part of Lent and Easter in Mexico and points south for a very long time — and didn’t go away when parts of Mexico became US territory. The idea is to experience the sufferings of Christ, not to die for anyone’s sins. (I saw an old feature about it once — it was about the un-Americanness of the practice, and had a Reefer Madness flavor).

As most of us already know, “Biblical Marriage” can also mean the man gets to have as many wives and concubines as he basically wants. There are many men that will use this precedent to argue for the complete overhaul of marriage law to allow male-dominated polygamy in an upcoming Christian theocracy.

They will likely get their wish even though nominal Christian belief is that “one man one woman” is the correct marriage, but modern American Christians often state they are “Old Testament Christians” relieving themselves of any adherence to actual Christian dogma. Cherry-picking their religious tenets for personal benefit is their MO. It is their defining character.

There are still many liberal pundits who utterly fail to realize the situation we are currently in.

It isn’t the Little Dutch Boy with a finger in the dam.

It’s Liberals/Democrats are Hodor and the Christian Fascists are the whitewalkers.

Yeesh. There’s been a mass shooting incident in Langley, British Columbia:

Police have confirmed several victims after a series of shootings in Langley, B.C., prompted emergency alerts on Monday.

The first alert, issued just after 6:15 a.m. PT, reported “multiple shooting scenes” in the downtown core of the City of Langley and one “incident” in the neighbouring Township of Langley. The alert included a description of a suspect.

Police confirmed one man had been arrested just before 7 a.m., but said officers were still determining whether the suspect acted alone.

Parslow said there were several victims, but did not specify how many. She said the victims were homeless and that police believe the attack was targeted.

At least one person has died, as the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is responding to the incident.

The alert described the suspect as a white man with dark hair who was wearing brown Carhartt coveralls as well as a blue and green camouflage T-shirt with a red logo on the right sleeve.

“It appears that the exquisitely 1980s-looking film crew shooting the ad for the white-bread ‘86 Cavalier coupe got a big surprise when it morphed into the Z24 before their eyes, with the sound of all those screaming pushrod horsepower (yes, the 2015 Kia Rio boasts 18 more hp than the 1986 Z24).”

Getting ahead of the Thursday’s economic report:

What is a recession? While some maintain that two consecutive quarters of falling real GDP constitute a recession, that is neither the official definition nor the way economists evaluate the state of the business cycle. Instead, both official determinations of recessions and economists’ assessment of economic activity are based on a holistic look at the data—including the labor market, consumer and business spending, industrial production, and incomes. Based on these data, it is unlikely that the decline in GDP in the first quarter of this year—even if followed by another GDP decline in the second quarter—indicates a recession.

Kind of the epitome of “obsolete the minute it leaves the lot.” What say you of the Chrysler K-platform cars. I remember them as junk mostly, but a quick google says they sold pretty well.

I recall driving a k-car rental in Los Angeles; when you turned the wheel to steer into a turn, the frame turned, but the body kept going straight for a second or two.

They were popular sellers - when they were new. Helped save Chrysler, or so the story goes.

In a decade, they were usually the cheapest thing you’d find on the used car lot. I remember seeing one back in 1997 for sale for $400, LOL.

They are all winners in my book.

Call it “A Moveable Feast” in the summer of 2022.

More than 100 men vied for the title of “man who most resembles author and former Key West resident Ernest Hemingway” this weekend in Florida — and only one man triumphed.

Attorney Jon Auvil caught the keen eye of the judges, who awarded him the win in the Hemingway Look-Alike Contest at Sloppy Joe’s Bar on Saturday.

Auvil beat out 124 other men for the title, according to the Associated Press.

Sloppy Joe’s is the Key West establishment where Hemingway was a regular visitor during his decade of island residence in the 1930s.

Granted, shark bites are not contagious. I guess if people want to take that risk, we should allow them with the caveat that they will have to pay for any rescue services they might require if they are attacked.

Shark attacks are so rare (even on the most ‘dangerous’ beaches, that you’re more likely to die in a car accident driving to the beach. At some point we just shouldn’t panic over low risk events.
