CD/DVD liner note from James – One Man Band (2007):

“It’s a strange reality of the modern popular song that the first time it’s played is when it’s recorded. Sometimes a song will be finished for deadline in the studio the day the thing is cast in stone forever. I know that songs and arrangements evolve and develop over time; that somewhere around the twentieth time it’s played for a live audience, a song finally completes itself. That, among other things, is what makes a good live recording unique. I’ve often thought that live performance means being well prepared and then waiting for the inevitable, unexpected thing to happen. We come onstage, well rehearsed and in good shape, and repeat what we have done before as best we can. But the real goal is to be in the present moment and on the surface of ourselves; open and trusting. Nobody wants to be perfect: that’s frozen, dead…It’s “be here now”, I guess…

Of course, Larry Goldings does more than just accompany me. His growing presence in the world of jazz is well acknowledged, both for his own recordings and live performances and as a member of a good number of team efforts. I tend to form musical (and personal) relationships with other players and then stick with them for years. @Arnold McCuller and David Lasley have worked with me since the mid-‘70s and others nearly as long (Jimmy Johnson, Steve Gadd, Mike Landau, Kate Markowitz, Valerie Carter…)

After my great friend, producer and pianist Don Grolnick died in ’96, I performed with a number of excellent keyboard players. It was during the recording of my October Road album in ’02 that I worked with Larry. Russ Titelman had booked him to play on “Mean Old Man” along with Steve Gadd on drums, Jimmy Johnson on bass, Clifford Carter on synth, and the fine seven-string jazz guitarist, @John Pizzarelli. This was an incredible band, and after hearing Larry Goldings’ solo on that song, first time through, he pinned it. That was our introduction and he’s been my first call ever since.

Then there’s the bus factor. You see, someone’s playing may be great, but what’s it going to be like spending 10 hours a day riding to the next gig with them for a couple of months? Larry’s Bus Factor is not a factor for he is a bus riding fool, for a fact.

Part of his talent is his ability to “split his hands.” Though not as painful as it sounds, it does require great focus and skill to play a melody/accompaniment with his right hand and, with his left hand, (often on another keyboard) play a distinct bass pattern. This Larry can do with effortless grace, and he has made this One Man Band show possible. He is a committed father, brother, and son, and I am in his debt. Larry Goldings is my One Man Band.” – James Taylor

French news: 300 hospitals are suing “the lino cartel”, the 3 largest suppliers of floor coverings, for breaking anti-monopoly laws.

Hundreds of millions of euros are in play.

Members of the cartel were using burner phones to arrange meetings in small hotels for price fixing meetings.

So far it appears that Mr Paul Bismuth was not involved.

Happy Turkey Day, for all who celebrate!

Just read the note on the turkey tag that says, “USDA suggests 1 pound of turkey per person.” In what universe? I’m getting ready to put a 17.55 lb bird into the oven for four people. Two kinds of dressing, mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, succotash, Waldorf salad, Hawaiian sweet rolls, cranberry sauce, and of course a boatload of gravy. Key lime pie for dessert (at least two hours after the main meal).

This is the one day out of the year that I cook like crazy — and then spend the rest of the weekend subsisting on the lovely leftovers. There will be turkey sandwiches, some kind of turkey casserole, fried mashed potatoes, etc. Plus some stock and meat into the freezer for turkey soup sometime in the future when we can face turkey again :).

What the heck, it’s tradition. Fond memories of doing this with my grandmother and my sisters over many, many years. Mom left it to us and enjoyed not having to cook, she could sit back and watch the parade and the football games.

I don’t know programming, but I’m waiting for this shoe to drop: Elon was complaining about “bots” because he thought anyone disagreeing with him or retweeting his Sideshow Bob rake-face comedy could only be an automated system designed with malicious intent. The actual inauthentic accounts are just fine because they’re not rustling his jimmies, and won’t be addressed.

I find this problematic. On the one hand, that’s a horrible picture of TFG. You wouldn’t want to look at it if you like him. (Would you?) If you don’t like him, you wouldn’t mind an ugly picture in theory, but you still wouldn’t want to look at it.

Why not put who you love on your car versus who you hate?

Just as an IMO guess, I’d say the “bigger loser” award has to go to Caribou Barbie: Kari Lake (to the utter disgrace of the AZ GOP - assuming they even have the shame to be “disgraced”) might still just have a political future there: she’ll likely be bitching about “that stolen election” ad nauseam for the next couple of years; Palin, OTOH, seems to headed for the “yesterday’s news” category in a handbasket….. *

*barring some Fox News gig, of course.

IIRC it was the rest of the party that forced Palin on McCain. Left to his own devices he apparently would have picked Lieberman (which is a different and less malignant kind of stupid).

It’s always good to remember the GOP is a very representative party. There is no pathology in the likes of Boebert, Palin, MTG or Trump that is not dominant in the party as a whole.

Trumpism is just all the masks coming off hard-right conservatism to reveal it as the filth that it is.

According to the American Kennel Club, French bulldogs are the second-most popular breed in the U.S., beat only by Labrador retrievers. Golden retrievers are the third most popular.

snip

Winston — whose registered show name is GCHP Fox Canyon’s I Won The War at Goldshield — has collected a number of titles over the years. This win marks his 78th best in show title, making Winston the No. 1 ranked all-breed canine in the U.S.

snip

Winston had already won in his non-sporting group before heading into the final round. There he beat out an American Staffordshire terrier named Trouble from the terrier group, Reus the Alaskan Malamute from the working group, Nate the Treeing Walker Coonhound from the hound group, Sloane the Irish water spaniel of the sporting group, River the German shepherd from the herding group and Cooper the English toy spaniel from the toy group.

Cooper captured the second place prize, known as Reserve Best in Show.

It occurs to me—particularly looking at how reactionaries always use rules abusively, and how Mush has repeatedly done version of “well technically I’m doing what was asked for”—that Twitter can be made unusable for leftists and irritants while never truly banning them outright, by simply flagging and temporary-suspending over and over.

At the same time—and this is a classic with a new coat of paint—you can let back on and prioritize the hard right—the fascists and racists—under the cover of intellectual breadth and new for “balance” of opinions.

stuff like this drives me nutz:

so my question was: What percentage of Cuba is vaccinated for Covid?
Cuba has administered at least 38,912,837 doses of COVID vaccines so far. Assuming every person needs 2 doses, that’s enough to have vaccinated about 171.7% of the country’s population.

and
Cuba produces its own vaccines, exports them and has one of the highest vaccine coverage ratios in the world.

So, apparently it’s not necessarily that Cuban has a better vaccine, it appears more likely that Cuba is successful due to its high vaccination rate.

kind of a oh duh moment for those looking for things to excuse the abysmal covid situation in the USA

The simplest representation that this is a cynical attempt at firing up a moral panic is that it steps over massive institutions that have recorded histories of grooming children and using money and power to cover it up to make excuses for a mass murder in a gay bar.

It wasn’t so long along that the same people were horrified by a church being burnt down by someone angry and abuses in residential schools.

Same as always, conspiracy step over the actual, open crime and invent a more lurid crime that removes the culpability of the powerful.

Just looked and ours is an old Masahiro. Never goes in the dishwasher and always put back in the original box when cleaned. Knives in our knives block are always blade up to reduce dulling when pulled out. The only thing I have a problem with is that my wife does the same in the drying sink and it’s dangerous to stick hands in when the sharp side is up.

Barefoot Grin  Nov 24, 2022 • 5:26:47pm

In the summer of 2018, I drove from Orange County to Denver and back for a bunch of freelance assignments. One of my stops was in Colorado Springs, for a subject I usually don’t care about: beer.

I’m more of a bourbon and mezcal man. But Jess Fierro of Atrevida Beer Co. had invited me to swing by her family business. She and her husband, Rich, had recently opened the small brewery and taproom, which at the time was one of the only Latina-run beer companies in the United States.

Over a crisp lager, Fierro told me her story. How she and Rich were high school sweethearts who grew up in San Diego. How they learned to love the art of beer making when Rich was stationed as an Army officer in Germany in the 2000s. How Jess, a cosmetologist by trade, worked up the nerve to do home brewing when the Army transferred Rich to Colorado.
Jess talked about the thrill of winning a beer competition aired on the Vice network. About the fright of turning a hobby into a livelihood. More importantly, she told me, she wanted to make a mark as a Mexican American woman, in an industry that was overwhelmingly white and male.

She was going to do it through beers with pan-Latino flavors like guava and tamarind that bore clever Spanglish names. Jess summed up her philosophy with the name “Atrevida,” which translates as “daring” and is usually used in Mexican Spanish as a term of grudging respect for women who do what they’re not supposed to.

At some point, her giant of a husband joined us. The Fierros were warm and funny — and fans of mine. I took photos of them in action, and they asked in return for a group photo. She promptly posted it on Instagram, noting she was “humbled and honored” I had stopped by. I left with a vow to visit Atrevida the next time I was in Colorado Springs, and a promise that an article for a national publication was on its way.
None of that ever came to be.

My mother was slowly dying of ovarian cancer. Other freelance assignments took precedence. I found a full-time job that took me away from writing about food. The pandemic pushed aside any stories not based in Southern California. As Atrevida began to rightfully receive national attention, any article I might’ve written would’ve been out of date. I eventually lost the notes and photos from my afternoon with the Fierros and had to move on.

They didn’t hold it against me. Every once in a while, Atrevida Beer Co. popped up in the comments on the weekly Instagram Live sessions I do from my personal account. Whenever they showed up, I’d excitedly plug the brewery and apologize for my oversight from years ago. When a friend did his own profile of Jess and mentioned we knew each other, she excitedly told him about how I had once visited Atrevida.

The Fierros were the first people I thought of when news emerged that a gunman had opened fire at an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs on Saturday night, killing five and injuring 18…..

Interesting article:

On the side of “stay” there are those who say they refuse to be driven out by fascists and bigots without a fight, along with communities such as differently-abled people, minority groups, minority religions (and no religion), &c.

On the side of “go” there are those who don’t want to be harassed by fascists and bigots and aren’t interested in having that fight over a platform they don’t own.

The more that leave, the more concentrated hate will be left.
