The great Thanos posted this amazing video in a comment earlier, and it’s so good I had to make a post out of it. Luca Stricagnoli is an ambidextrous monster.

DESCRIPTION
I never had a chance to play the game, but I loved “The Witcher” series! I think Henry Cavill is amazing in this role, and the whole atmosphere of the series was so dark and cool that it inspired me to dive into its world. My favorite song of the TV series was “Toss A Coin To Your Witcher”, written by Giona Ostinelli and Sonya Belousova, and that`s what I am playing in this video, as always masterfully shot by my super wife Meg Pfeiffer. Please let me know your comments below and don´t forget to come to a concert to hear my arrangement live. Thank you for your support! You can listen to the song everywhere online, but since I am late as usual it might take a week until it appears on the stores.

Here is the European model forecast for lows on Christmas Eve, for the South:

Freezing all the way to Tampa. Lots of tropical plants are going to die.

The GFS is not much better for Floriday:

And has it colder for those in the mid-south.

They do it because it’s “owning the libs and their witch hunt process” by refusing to give any factual information whatsoever. And because factual and truthful information is absolutely not in their own interests and that of their fascist authoritarian agenda to give out.

Throwback to the last thread. People keep talking about the 4th amendment and civil asset forfeiture, but the 5th amendment is a stronger prohibition:

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

It’s amazing that all those textualists and originalists on SCOTUS allow civil asset forfeiture. If we ignore the bolded parts of the 5th, why not the whole thing?

re: #22 Joe Bacon

The Red Skull would fit right in with the GOP Leadership.

Well, he was George W. Bush’s Secretary of Defense (under the alias “Dell Rusk”) in 2003’s AVENGERS: RED ZONE storyline. (Sample villainous dialogue: “I love America. It’s the Red Skull’s kind of country.” and “I have a new dream. A new vision. Freedom must feel fear. And fear leads to control. I was wrong about this country. This wonderful ‘United’ States of America. It has all the resources already in place. It has the right attitudes laced within. They just need to be exploited. To become the perfect nation — America just needs a push in the Right direction.” [posed again with hand over heart in the Pledge posture as in the previous quote].)

After the Skull was defeated, Dubya nominated Tony Stark to replace Rusk as Defense Secretary in 2004’s “Best Defense” storyline over in IRON MAN.

It’s going to be a high of 53F with gusts up to 50mph tomorrow then drop overnight to the teens and stay in the single digits to teens for the next few days. My stupid son took the last possible bus from NYC to Boston and now finds that with holiday traffic the bus is super late, so he probably won’t make the last train north to where I was going to pick him up at midnight (in heavy rain). No way in hell I’m driving to Boston tonight. The dilemma is that the rain will be heavier tomorrow and it will have those winds, but I’ll figure that out tomorrow. I’ve slept on bus station floors before when I traveled from Georgia to home in Illinois during holidays—he can do it too.

Well, they just arrested a punk in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile Proud Boy Tony Moon still walks free and continues to terrorize LBGTQ people.

A man who carried what appeared to be a hammer at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, got into a standoff Thursday with the FBI for hours before special agents arrested him for his role in the riot, law enforcement officials said.

The FBI arrested Eric Christie on Thursday after several hours in which he refused to cooperate with authorities after they arrived at a home in Sherman Oaks, California. Two law enforcement officials confirmed his arrest.

Online sleuths had identified Christie as a Jan. 6 participant, and images show him on top of a law enforcement vehicle on the east side of the Capitol, wrapped in rainbow flag and with what appears to be a hammer hanging from his belt. The law enforcement activity took place at an address associated with an Eric Christie.

re: #23 The Ghost of a Flea

Yup, there is a whole lot of stupid happening in just 19 seconds. As noted by GoddamnedFrank, there are negligent discharges happening.

The shooters seem to be so close to each other that I wonder if they are raining the ejected casings on each other. And yes, those suckers are hot when they first eject. And that can be quite distracting.

Pistols are being pointed in all sorts of directions. Often the shooter is not even fully looking at where he is shooting.

I’m not sure what the point of walking right up to a target is and then turning 90 degrees and shooting down the line of shooters.

There seems to be some limp wristing happening. (Doing that in some pistols will soak up enough recoil to cause jams.)

If they are training for some sort of synchronized shooting dance routine, they should not be using loaded pistols.

If they are practicing group tactics, standing shoulder to shoulder went out around 1860.

They cant be practicing fire and maneuver because they certainly aren’t maneuvering.

And they are pointing their loaded pistols in very dangerous directions.

My first thought upon seeing that at a firing range would be to remove myself from the vicinity of these idiots.

As to the rest of the “technique” in that video, what’s it for? Like, is he teaching people how to deal with being flanked on three sides while trapped inside a narrow parrot cage? Because otherwise I don’t see the upside vs potentially taking an orbital fracture from a recoiling slide. Dude’s probably my age too, so I know his close up vision is butt and the sights are just one big blur even when he isn’t negligently letting one fly from waist level.

The last time I fired any pistols was September 2021 in between Torch Lake and Lake Michigan (I posted about some of that day on my Instagram if you care to scroll). It was four dudes and an assortment of guns of most shapes and sizes, we were “retiring” an old dryer I helped lift out of my friend’s basement that morning. One dude had a Browning M1911 with 25 stars on the grips (two sides makes 50 stars, get it?), “We The People” on one side of the slide. “1776” on the other side, and on top of the slide the circle of 13 stars. “That’s an expensive weapon,” dude told me before I fired it. Before I fired I said “I will take great care.” “I trust you,” he replied.

And that was one day in northern Michigan last year when I had a close encounter with a real wingnut weirdo who happened to be neighbors with my friend with the dryer.

Glocks, man. Never really liked ‘em shootin’.

The Glock design is inherently unsafe. You _have_ to pull the trigger to disassemble the damn things. I owned a Generation 2 Glock 19. Put a NY1 trigger system in it to make it a little less hair trigger than they are out of the box but never really liked it. It’s one of the few guns I do _not_ miss.

Steel. Hammer fired. A real manual safety. Those are my requirements and those are why I bought that PPK/S to carry when I feel it’s necessary.

It’s +15 here (Gordon, Texas) right now, which is damn cold for this part of the world. Wind is 10 mph, giving chill factor of 2.7.
It’s 8 in Lubbock, wind 13 mph, wind chill -7.4. During the Abbott freeze-out a couple of years ago, Lubbock got down to -1 still air, the first below zero reading there since 1986. It was last below zero here (-4) in 1990, which was an all time low.

I had trouble breathing that high. It was so beautiful!

35 years ago my husband and I visited Bryce Canyon. The motel was at 9000 feet elevation and I found it difficult to breathe the one night we stayed there.

Memories of that mean 1978-79 winter when I was working in the Chicago Social Security Payment Center and working on my MA at night at the University of Chicago. I was living in Oak Park on Harrison St a block away from the City line. The L tracks froze in December and we couldn’t get to work. Streets in a whole bunch of Council districts weren’t plowed. When we were able to get to work the pipes in the Payment Center kept freezing and bursting…(YES THEY BURST OVER CASE FILES).

That was also the time Carter issued an order that no Federal buildings had hot water so we only had cold water in the rest rooms (and guess what happened there!). The cafeteria had problems with meals because supplies were running out in the provisioners and grocery stores. Pennsylvania never had it as bad.

The first chance I had I transferred back to Pennsylvania and then decided that when anything opened in Southern California I was gonna take it even if it was a downgrade to a lower position. Chicago is an incredible place but the humidity in the summer and that lake effect snow and freezing wind was too much for me.

This coming January 16th is going to be the start of the 41st year I’ve been in Southern California and I never regretted the move.

OK so I decided to look up Gordon, Texas on Google Maps and the fact that y’all have a business in town called Tactical Canine Grooming is somehow the most infinitely hilarious small town Texas thing ever.

“Sure bro, we groom dogs.

Lying about the cause of death. Sorta like China only counts certain respiratory deaths as being covid, significantly undercounting the reality.

Nebraska blocks reporting from the state and public health districts. It has been months since we could get accurate information.

For example for my public health district, all tracking information has been removed by order of the state (the claim is it violates privacy). Obtaining vaccines are limited to a few places and must be done by appointment. The governor’s office specifically restricts the distribution of Paxlovid to hospitals (for example, our regional hospital only gets two courses of the drug per month).

The GOP has been engaging in genocide since this started.

I lost my grandmother (mom’s mom) when I was 19, she was 90. Still one of those moments in my life where the wave of sadness was a little overwhelming. Grandma Marion was the kindest most saintly human, the most benevolent human I encountered and she was my mom’s mom. My mother took great pains to get all of Marion’s relatives together for the funeral, bought flights and hotel rooms and such, that was the last time I saw all my distant cousins living in South Dakota and Minnesota.

There was lots of crying at my grandmother Marion’s funeral. My mom sat right up front during the Catholic funeral, dressed in all black. She didn’t cry.

She was relieved that her mother was no longer suffering from Parkinson’s Disease.

The last family funeral I attended was that of my great-grandmother Mayo (my mother’s mother’s mother) in 1993. I was on temporary duty in Germany from Spain when my command contacted the command in Germany to put me on emergency leave. (My great-grandmother had a significant role in raising me, so my family sent a Red Cross message to my command.)

I took a commercial flight from Frankfurt to Detroit, later returning from Detroit to Gibraltar.

Semi-regular advice from hotel front desk jockey: Hotels of the same brand can have different policies, so variations of “I’ve been staying at [insert brand] for weeks/months/etc and never…” holds no weight with me. If I tell you X and you say Y is what you’re accustomed to, X is what I’m going to repeat because X is what I was told to follow by my boss under pain of possible termination. There’s generally a reason for hotels having their own individual policy differences, and that reason almost always is because one or more dipshits cost them a lot of money.

Not sure why, but this makes me think of what I discussed with my father earlier today. My alcoholic maternal grandmother (I was reminded of this story earlier today by Dad) once slammed into a squad car so hard while drunk that the cops ran the other way in fear for their lives. That said, she didn’t even get a ticket because the county didn’t want to pay for 5 kids in foster care. < spit > Next day she was back at work as a LPN after having her usual brew for breakfast and the kids were on the bus to school.

I was left wondering if the fact that the youngest girl was … less sharp than a bowling ball was a classic case of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome but she’s long since passed and that wasn’t a thing till a good decade or more later.

Yup. Big things for us is that we:
1) are NOT pet friendly
2) you better be 21 to try to rent here (I will usually give benefit of the doubt to people on biz with their company credit cards. We can soak them _hard_ if necessary… )
3) if you go through a 3rd party (hotels.com is the fucking worst, though Priceline comes close. Seriously CALL THE HOTEL and make the reservation. Yeah, it will cost you more, but you will be happier) they will reserve you a “whatever is open” room and not the Single King Standard they told you. And if it’s even slightly busy you won’t get that king you’re expecting (too fucking many Karens over this one).

This is why you make your complaint to the corporation directly (such as when a dipshyte drops a shotgun aimed at you, you complain to the front desk and they answer LOL then you write to the corporate office and suddenly you are contacted by that hotel manager with a profuse apology and a refund of your entire stay).

1) We are pet friendly, but we do require a daily pet fee of $25 that’s paid upfront at check-in. And if we catch you sneaking Fido in (pro tip: housekeepers get really pissed when they get met with a barking dog that you did not declare at check-in), then we penalize you $250 on top of the pet fee.
2) It’s also 21 here, but we’re willing to make exceptions for active duty military if they have their ID with them at check-in. And that’s at our discretion, as we’ve had more than a few assholes on leave who rented a room to trash and then run the following morning.
3) We do not have a set of rooms we set aside if Expedia/Priceline/Hotels/etc oversell us and we will not magically build more rooms because you chose to rent a cheap-as-fuck room at 1am to crash after a night of partying. This is especially true in the summer, when every other jackass who decided to visit the clubs on a weekend had the exact same idea.

A few of our own:

4) We accept authorizations for corporate credit cards only, a policy we had to adopt after months of drug users/dealers, hookers, and assorted scum kept using fake names and real credit cards to scam us out of tens of thousands of dollars in rental fees. And no, I don’t believe that your brother in another state is the head of an independent record label who can afford to send you on week-long stays in multiple hotels for weeks at a time and not be able to put the label’s name on the form when submitting it.
5) Our hotel parking lot policy is “Park at your own risk.” No, we don’t have a dozen different cameras monitoring your car 24/7. No, we can’t give the police a detailed description of the asshole in the half-ton boat trailer that knicked your back bumper. No, we will not pay to replace the Fabrige egg that you kept locked in your glove box that was stolen in the dead of night. But we will take down your info on one of our incident reports to submit to our insurance company so they can send us back a letter simply saying “LMAO.”
6) This a semi-official policy, but we ask guests to make large requests at reasonable times of the day. A few pots and dishes to cook a simple meal at O’dark thirty is reasonable, asking for an entire pantry because you want to cook breakfast in the morning but don’t want to put on pants is not. Likewise leave all but basic repairs to the morning when trained maintenance crew are on the clock, don’t demand the graveyard crew figure out how to reverse the polarity of your TV’s neutron flow at 2am.

Throwback to the last thread. People keep talking about the 4th amendment and civil asset forfeiture, but the 5th amendment is a stronger prohibition:

It’s amazing that all those textualists and originalists on SCOTUS allow civil asset forfeiture. If we ignore the bolded parts of the 5th, why not the whole thing?

IANAL, but the big problem seems to be the asset forfeiture has a “process”, it’s just complete bullshit (United States v. $124,700 in U.S. Currency).

And why the Squad in particular would pick this particular issue to make themselves look bad is a mystery to me. I mean, if you ever wanted to institute a wealth tax, this argument seems to be a great way to shut it down before it ever gets off the ground.

Fun fact: yy in Zelenskyy represent two entirely different sounds. The first one doesn’t exist in English (I think), in Ukrainian it’s represented by и, its Russian almost-equivalent by ы (which is different from the Russian и). The second y represents the semivowel /j/ (й in Ukrainian and Russian) like the first sound in “yes”.

Wow.

Nearly 37 million people in China may have been infected with Covid-19 on a single day this week, according to estimates from the government’s top health authority, making the country’s outbreak by far the world’s largest.

As many as 248 million people, or nearly 18% of the population, likely contracted the virus in the first 20 days of December, according to minutes from an internal meeting of China’s National Health Commission held on Wednesday, confirmed with people involved in the discussions. If accurate, the infection rate would dwarf the previous daily record of about 4 million, set in January 2022.

Beijing’s swift dismantling of Covid Zero restrictions has led to the unfettered spread of the highly contagious omicron variants in a population with low levels of natural immunity. More than half the residents of Sichuan province, in China’s southwest, and the capital Beijing have been infected, according to the agency’s estimates.

Looks like newly-minted Congressman George Santos (R) might well be a fugitive from justice in Brazil:

In 2008, when Mr. Santos was 19, he stole the checkbook of a man his mother was caring for, according to Brazilian court records uncovered by The Times. Police and court records show that Mr. Santos used the checkbook to make fraudulent purchases, including a pair of shoes. Two years later, Mr. Santos confessed to the crime and was later charged.

The court and local prosecutor in Brazil confirmed the case remains unresolved. Mr. Santos did not respond to an official summons, and a court representative could not find him at his given address, records show.

That period in Brazil overlapped with when Mr. Santos said he was attending Baruch College, where he has said he was awarded a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance. But Baruch College said it was unable to find records of Mr. Santos — using multiple variations of his first, middle and last names — having graduated in 2010, as he has claimed.

Interesting stuff: and I like how the report consistently refers to Trump’s BS scheme as one of “fake electors” - rather than the “contingent electors” euphemism Mango Mussolini and his creatures wanted to push…

Though IMO, this info is just more damning to the WH’s involvement in the Jan 6 riot: by early January, all the electoral votes (as I recall) had already been certified: the election-challenge litigation in all the “litigation states” TFG cited in Dec. had been finally decided. And uniformly decided against Trump and the GOP. So rendering his scheme even more irrelevant (which of course, didn’t stop him from continuing to push it, as he still is).

New York Magazine: “Since then, he has barely set foot outside the perimeter of Mar-a-Lago. For 28 days, in fact, he has not left the state of Florida at all.”

He is sensitive about this. He does not like what it suggests. So he does not accept the premise*. ‘Sometimes I don’t even stay at Mar-a-Lago,’ he told me. What do you mean you don’t stay there, I asked. Where do you stay? ‘I stay here,’ he said, ‘but I am outside of Mar-a-Lago quite a bit. I’m always largely outside of Mar-a-Lago at meetings and various other things and events. I’m down in Miami. I go to Miami, I go to different places in Florida.’”

“What he means when he says ‘Miami’ is that his SUV rolls down the driveway, past the pristine lawn set for croquet and through the Secret Service checkpoint at the gate, for the two-hour trip to another piece of Trump real estate, the Trump National in Doral, about eight miles from the airport in Miami-Dade County. There, he meets regularly with an impressive, ideologically diverse range of policy wonks, diplomats, and political theorists for conversations about the global economy and military conflicts and constitutional law and I’m kidding. He goes there to play golf.”

Said one adviser: “He just goes, plays golf, comes back, and fucks off. He has retreated to the golf course and to Mar-a-Lago. His world has gotten much smaller. His world is so, so small

A lifetime Musk super-fan is currently confronting Elon for his remarks about transgender children - confronting him for his horrific attack on lgbtq+ people $tsla. Tells him she sold her model 3.

Elon is not happy.
Elon tells the investor he will not stop attacking people like her transgender daughter.
Elon is back-peddling, says he doesn’t necessarily hate transgenders. Says he will not censor his own views on them.
The host is currently trying to get “change the topic of the conversion” — started getting very messy, with several people trying to talk over each other. Elon is now trying to move on from the topic of if he hates trans people

They sued over $4 spent on a movie that didn’t feature an actress they like. It seems insane to me, but it might force filmmakers to release trailers that actually feature scenes from the film they released.

On Tuesday (20 December), US District Judge Stephen Wilson issued a ruling on the fans’ January lawsuit brought against Universal Pictures.

In the lawsuit, Conour Wolfe and Peter Michael Rosza allege that they each paid $3.99 (£3.29) to rent the studio’s 2019 romance musical Yesterday - about a world void of the Beatles - on Amazon Prime after seeing De Armas in the trailer, only to find out that the Cuban-Spanish actor had been cut from the final film.

Universal sought to dismiss the case, claiming that trailers are entitled to free speech protection under the First Amendment. The studio’s lawyers argued that a trailer is a three-minute “artistic, expressive work” used to convey the movie’s themes. Therefore it should be considered “non-commercial” speech.

However, the judge denied that argument, instead ruling that a trailer is indeed commercial speech, which makes it subject to California’s False Advertising Law and Unfair Competition Law.

Interesting. Trailers usually release while the movie is still in production, meaning there will often be changes between what you see in the trailer and the final product.

I doubt this suit will ultimately go anywhere, but I imagine a lot of filmmakers would be pissed if they were legally barred from removing performers from a film after they appeared in the trailer.

Part of the act of continuously invoking the Fifth Amendment when being questioned under oath is to be consistent and build up a rhythm. Start answering some questions by choice and the temptation is to later say something, justify yourself or argue or explain rather than keeping quiet as you should.

Being questioned is tiring and few people can stay awake and aware of what they’re giving away, especially to trained and experienced interrogators. Worst case they can tear what you say apart and you can then be accused of perjury if you slip up or get things wrong, honestly or otherwise.

Ms. Haberman calls, Hutchinson asks him not to answer (while he is telling her to lie to the January 6 commission), he does anyway because “she favours us,” talks to her when she asks about Hutchinson, he tells her, Haberman has a “scoop” in the NYT that Hutchinson will testify.

Angry librarian tells off conservative Christians protesting library in righteous speech (LGBTQ Nation, December 23, 2022)

A Michigan librarian who has been under attack by conservative protestors all year reached what she called her “breaking point” at a library board meeting earlier this week, delivering a fiery speech rebuking the Christian conservatives angry about the library’s few LGBTQ+ books.

The woman, who works for the Patmos Library in Jamestown Township, Michigan, explained why the library has been closing early.

The library has been targeted by local conservatives all year for having LGBTQ+ books in its collection, including books like Spinning and Kiss Number 8. Both books have teen girl characters who discuss their feelings for other girls. Library officials said that the library has about 90 books with LGBTQ+ themes in its 67,000-book collection.

The library agreed to keep the most controversial book - asexual and nonbinary author Maia Kobabe’s memoir Gender Queer - behind the main desk so that people would have to ask a librarian to read it, but that wasn’t enough to satisfy the conservatives.

“Pray that we can make changes and make the Patmos Library a safe and neutral place for our children,” said a flyer from one of the local organizations, Jamestown Conservative, this summer.

Two library directors resigned as a result of the hateful messages they received from conservative residents.

The Patmos Library’s funding was on the ballot in the August primary elections, when voters rejected the tax used to pay for the library.

“50% Millage INCREASE to GROOM our kids? Vote NO on Library!” one sign that was directly across the street from the library said, using the regional term “millage” to refer to the property tax.

We’re not getting any of this crap at our public library. The village board voted to expand the library’s hours and pay for the library director, and added a second assistant librarian position.

Although the public library here is in a town of 128, people from all over the east side of the county use the library.

Kremlin propagandist goes berserk over Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s address to Congress (AlterNet)

After months of pro-Kremlin state media prediction that the U.S. support for Ukraine would die out, Russian propagandist Vladimir Solovyov became enraged when he saw an image of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky alongside House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Kamala Harris as they accepted and proudly held up the Ukrainian flag, The Daily Beast reports.

As a guest was speaking, Solovyov reportedly was texting with producers, demanding that they remove the clip of Zelensky in the U.S. When the producers didn’t react to his demands fast enough, he said, “Guys, get rid of this video, if you can’t read what is being written to you!”

“Zelensky is already on his way to Washington. It’s perhaps a natural path for any traitor… He betrayed his entire Soviet past,” he said. “Our weapon-makers are more talented anyway. Our men are more ingenious because we’re Russians—of many different nationalities. God is with us! Either we will win, or humanity will cease to exist, because the Lord won’t stand for the triumph of warriors of the Antichrist. We are the Lord’s weapon, we are his avenging right hand.”

Most of the Trumpsters I know/knew personally are well educated; just racists and white supremacists. Some are theocrats. You can be well educated in certain fields and totally ignorant about history. The non-theocrats are fine with learning technical subjects and hard sciences and teaching those to the next generation; not so much about teaching our long history of slavery and Jim Crow.

County Government of Oslo and Viken, Norway revokes the status of the Jehovah’s Witnesses as a religious community (in Norwegian).

Jehovas Vitner taper registrering som trossamfunn.

The gist is they refused to file a response in 2021 for state grants. When the grants were suspended, they objected to the suspension.

The reason they were required to file a response was because the Norwegian state alleged a number of things about the JWs:

1) Denied members freedom of expression
2) Denied baptised children membership
3) Isolating children who do not follow the community’s rules.
4) Violations of children’s rights

These are all violations of the Religious Communities Act.

They may no longer conduct marriages. They may continue to meet without state subsidies.
