ODESSA, Ukraine (JTA) - A year after Rabbi Mendy Wolff spirited 120 children and staff away from the Mishpacha Orphanage in this war-torn country to the safety of Berlin, he is preparing to bring them home.

So, so weird to see Berlin touted as a haven of safety for Jews.

Technical question: I’m already married. If I were to receive one, what do I do with her? It isn’t exactly legal to marry her, and I quite like the one I have.

Normally I do not like to talk about my work. Today was very unusual. I was walking as I usually do around Center City Philadelphia. I just finished walking 4th Street and was already on Race Street when I heard the crash. I did not think much of it until I saw the reaction of a couple of workers unloading a truck. They had a very shocked look on their faces. I looked back at the corner I just finished turning and saw two vehicles one car and one SUV crushed and the brick and iron fencing of the church very badly damaged.

The last time he posted to his tumblr was five months ago. His last two posts there were approving reblogs of pro-LGBTQ posts. There’s a young PhD with a name I’ve long associated him with in meatspace who appears to be an elementary school principal in Virginia. I can’t say with any certainty if it’s him or not. If it is him, I hope that he has grown out of the proto-incel thing and the need for vengeance.

I must say that the Biden Administration does seem to actually have its act together wrt the East Palestine spill(s) - which is only to be expected. The main negative I see is that the Kvetch Caucus of GOPers is probably going to (as usual) ignore reality and simply keep on bitching about the Govt. response: which, of course, they would never do under a Republican Admin - and that the general media coverage is unfortunately likely to focus more (/mostly) on the complaints (and the GOP spin thereon)….

Visual Sudio 2017 does the match in real time on the current file if you type in a regular expression into search. I just wish they would switch over to perl regular expressions rather than their old syntax.

re: #91 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

All I want is one of those hot Russian brides. Is that too much to ask?

In the extended local Swing Dance community, I’ve met a couple.

One was a very pretty woman from Astrakhan whose marriage to an older American guy definitely did not work out. I suspect that neither was expecting what they got. And the failure did not help her demeanor. She was, of course, very angry. I do not know how much was from her time in Russia, or her time here. In the past 10 years, she seems to have found a good stable relationship and a stable job. Certainly, I wish her well. She seems fairly assimilated into American culture with American mannerisms, excellent English etc. Although she seems to trend towards the goth styling.

My conclusion was that it is hard to pull someone out of their native culture, particularly if they are already failing to point of feeling the need to flee. And then expect them to suddenly make a successful adaption to our complex culture without a support network.

The other lady was able to, as far as I can tell, find a good stable marriage and supportive environment. She seemed very happy as did her American husband.

By the way, the Yiddish Folksong “The Golden Peacock” (Di Goldene Pave) deals with the issue. Of a bride going to live with the groom’s family far away from her own. And finding them unsupportive of her and her homesickness.

Some versions of this century old song view the Golden Peacock as a heavenly messenger between the bride and her family. In other versions, she dreams of being the Golden Peacock herself and flying back to her parents.

Tonight is our last night in Florida, so Z and I went out to a club that our kids recommended “for people just like you.” There was a geriatric band onstage playing Motown & Beatles hits, and everyone in the entire establishment (except for the bartenders and waitstaff) was our age. Oh yeah and this place was located next door to a retirement community.

We had cocktails & ate good food & enjoyed ourselves even though our kids were sending a subtle message.

WE ARE NOT MOVING TO FLORIDA.

I’ll put the album right here. Though maybe fewer than a half dozen LGF commenters would actually go through sitting and listening to the whole gotdam thing. The song is a slog, and the singer never changes keys (except once near the end of the song, where he sings a whole step up briefly). It takes up three sides of a 33 rpm LP.

I didn’t want to say anything. But Backwoods_Sleuth has a point.

I currently don’t have an LGF subscription, though I used to. Changing jobs, money’s tight, nothing’s free, etc. I don’t block ads at LGF, I want Charles to get his pittance from Google Ads or whatever. It’s not bad, not intrusive, and I get ads for concerts, ski areas, ski gear, and bike gear. Sometimes a right wing shithead will make its way through, which is weird, LGF stopped being a “right wing site” around 2007-08. —>> It really came to a head when Charles posted an anti-creationism post and many many LGF readers at the time came out as anti-science loons.
