I got another call from the “Grandma Scam Call Center”

I answered the phone (it was the landline so I was prepared for a scammer) and there was a *bloop* sound then the sound of people talking before the call was picked up, which tells me this is a call center.

Anyway I answered and the guy said “Hello, grandma?” and I’m like “What is this, the Grandma Scam hotline? Fuck off.” and hung up.

Seriously if there is a call center making these scam calls they need to be shut down but they are probably offshore.

I get those “bloop” calls on my old landline which is on Ooma. I like to play performance art with them. When they call me asking about if I want to sell my house, I ask for a number to call back, or if the number isn’t spoofed. Then, I will call them hours later and ask them if they want to sell me their car. They just hate that.

I had something similar the other night. I got a call around 1030 PM. An older voice told me I had to call a certain number immediately. I hung up on them and blocked the number.

The Putinists might have found out he was about to double-cross them for some reason. Conversely, the assassin may have had a Road to Damascus moment, something like that TexasMAGA school board member who found that everything she had campaigned against was bullshit. Former adherents are often the most vicious opponents.

Here is a scam that halfway fooled me. I received a Paypal invoice. Being wary, I went to Paypal myself to see it. It wasn’t for anything I recognized. At the top of the invoice, on PayPal, in big letters it said something like “To report an error call (phone number)”.

The scammer named their company “To report an error call (phone number)”. I did call because it was so weird, and then noped out of there as soon as the guy wanted to take over my computer.

But I reported it to Paypal, because companies should not be allowed to name themselves “To report an error call (phone number).” That’s just wrong. My mom might well have let the guy take over her computer.

I haven’t watched the video yet, but one thing to call out is that a lot of the scammers are being coerced into doing this job. Sometimes even through threats of violence or deportation. The actual criminals are, as usual, all-too happy to let underlings take all the risk and do all the dirty work, while they collect the profits.

Got an SMS the other day saying my power account needed 100 SEK or my power would be turned off. Checked the phone number, went to some dudes private phone. Correct account number. However, the OCR number wasn’t anything I recognized. Reported it to the power company.

Fucking brilliant. Tell your BIL he’s my hero. That was awesome.

Direct quote from my BIL “I have the time and they can’t call anyone else”. Funny thing is, that’s how a regular conversation goes with him too. Paraphrased from my phone call with him last week”

“You’re planted apple trees? You should have called Zeke. He went to school for trees. You remember Zeke? He planted those pine trees on the hill overlooking town that spell Mandan. He moved out to Vermont where he takes care of some guys trees. You ever been to Vermont, dat? I’ve never been. I think they have lots of spruce trees there. We don’t have many spruce trees here. Too dry in summer. Too cold in winter. Lots of spruce in the Black Hills though. I’m thinking of going to Sturgis this year. Got my bike all fixed up. Heard it’s been real dry there so no fireworks at the Rushmore this year. Who’s on that again? Washington, Lincoln, Teddy, and who else? Oh, we went to Teddy Roosevelt last week. Musical hadn’t started yet so we just spent the afternoon. Really nice day. Saw those wild horses. Hey, you heard they’re going to keep them, didn’t you?”

Hey, BIL, is it ok if I talk to my sister now?

So I watched the UPS van on their map… and it came back to my neighborhood, the van supposedly was across the street from the driveway up to my place… and now it’s gone away again.

It’s like their algorithm didn’t notice the van just had to go a couple of hundred yards farther… and now it’s over half a mile away, again.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  May 15, 2024 • 12:35:35pm

The travelling salesman problem is one of the great classics of computer science.

One can’t find the shortest distance in any easily computable manner, when the set of stops becomes more than just a few.

I presume this van has a 100 stops to make, just in drop-offs after it leaves the UPS terminal down in Chula Vista. It will also have to make pick-ups.

THAT’S how ya do it.
Play the disgruntled deaf man.
Be the person who thinks long lost buddy Billy is calling.
Be the guy who screams “IT WASN’T ME THAT HIT YOUR CAR I TOLD THE POLICE AND I’M NOT GOING TO STAND FOR IT!”
Pretend you are a business. Pick one. Then put them on hold as you go to get a manager.
Keep on coming back with “You still there? Good. Please hold.”
“Did you see that accident too?!?? They told me you would call. Is this that call? is your name Armando?”
Listen, I told you the check is in the mail. I mailed it. LET ME TALK TO A MANAGER.

I had callers strung out for 10 minutes and more.

I suspect the box may not even be delivered today.

My experience is that once the van gets far enough away they just don’t want to go back to a street they’ve been on before.

I also bet that even if the driver noticed he had a delivery scheduled for just across the street from where he is, he does not have the discretion to dash over there an not follow the path on his little computer display telling him exactly where to turn next.

I think their system is also based on how they load the truck - so they scan packages as they load them and that determines the order of stops. So you and your next door neighbor might have packages to be delivered today but yours went in as number 27 and theirs went in as number 36 - human reason would be to screen the packages/manifest and grab 27 and 36 at the same time - but the way the truck is loaded, packages 28 through 36 might be in the way.

It isn’t just about distance, they will also factor in number of left turns, and traffic, and lord knows what else. They are very good at plotting the route that is most effecient for them, unfortunately, that is not always most efficient for you. And sometimes drivers just screw up and miss a delivery. One day I had multiple packages scheduled that were on the truck for delivery, the driver missed one of the 3 and it didn’t come back til the next day because they can’t just turn around when they realize they made a mistake.

Pro tip, never look at the map. UPS trucks run on a Heisenbergian system that makes it impossible to determine if delivery will occur the second you try to observe the truck’s current location.

One thing for sure: their algorithm is not based on minimizing carbon emissions.

Like, my package went from outside of Chicago to Louisville KY. Reasonable as that is where the big UPS “Worldport” air transport terminal is located.

But instead of flying to SoCal… the package goes back to northwest of Chicago for a day… to finally make it to Riverside County.

Why not just take the package originally from the vendor to the place where the plane was going to be loaded to come to California?

GOP Sen. Mitt Romney says Biden should have pardoned Trump

Hell fucking no. We’re in this mess in significant part because Ford pardoned Nixon and the DOJ writing a memo that says you can’t indict a sitting president.

We never needed to indict a sitting president, but Trump clearly engaged in felony conduct, and engaged in criminal conduct before and after 2020 (especially 1/6/2021).

Pardoning sends the precisely wrong message. It elevates criminality and makes those who would want to break the law even more bold to commit criminal conduct and erode the rule of law.

It doesn’t bring about resolution of issues or bring the nation together. It gives the GOP cover for their misconduct for years on end.

No - the answer is to forcefully prosecute those who engage in criminal conduct. You want someone to get a pardon? How about this - let the underlings testify against Trump on all of those felonies, while Trump and his key leadership are prosecuted. Meadows, Trump, Jared, and all of Trump’s inner circle prosecuted, along with those members of Congress who conspired with Trump.

Then we can talk about who doesn’t get charged and prosecuted.

plus does romney not realize that the NY case is about actions that took place before he was president (ie as a private citizen)?
and those actions quite likely affected the outcome of the election (ie he may very well have otherwise lost) in which case none of the rest of these cases would have happened at all (stolen dox, insurrection etc)

But Trump is in a completely different category. He’s an unrepentant career criminal who has avoided consequences for his entire life, and now he’s actually in a position to do (even more) serious damage to the US.

Hell no. No pardon for insurrection and treason.

From Øyvind Strømmen’s FB account, machine translation:

If the reports in several Slovak media are true, the man who shot the Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is a left-wing poet, who a few years ago participated in the establishment of the micro party Movement Against Violence.
It is… an unusual story of radicalization, but it is interesting to see the outcome of this tragic event in a country that is deeply politically politically polarized.

I’ve also seen other things stating he was an ex spetnaz trained Russian operative, I think I am going to trust Øyvind Strømmen on this one.

The most ridiculous aspect of the Nixon situation is that he was going to win the presidency in a blowout and yet his minions felt they had to commit illegal actions to help him achieve victory. Unlike Trump, Nixon actually knew history and policy and was not in it to enrich himself financially. Of course, he was responsible (directly and indirectly) for a large number of deaths in Asia due to his handling of the Vietnam war.

Watching the UPS truck on the map… they’re not reducing anything.

He’s going around in loops, stopping at apartment complexes visited earlier… zig zagging across a area about 2 miles in radius…

I gather that the depot just chucked things in the truck as they arrived on the loading dock and now the computer is just sending the driver hither and yon within a certain radius.

I’ve watched many an Amazon delivery truck in this area and they are much more logical. Amazon can even count down the number of stops till your door.

Also on why computers are dumb: The map UPS shows is not accurate.

The map shows two driveways connected when in fact they are not. This can even be seen from the aerial image.

But the map they are using is based on some property divisions from the early part of the 20th century, when there may have been a connection and the property lines down at the county offices may still show such.

But that connection has not existed in physical reality since at least the 1970s.

Forget not trusting AI, one shouldn’t even trust the maps these computer services (Google, Apple, Microsoft) offer.

And here I’m watching a delivery van taking many extra miles of transport just because… I’m not sure why…. and I can only conclude that we simply will not reduce our emissions.

Unlike Trump, Nixon actually knew history and policy and was not in it to enrich himself financially.

The Presidential Records Act was passed in a hurry after Nixon attempted to leave the White House with a bunch of Presidential documents, hoping to sell them privately later. I believe he expected to make about eight million dollars from the sale.

I don’t know if he got a book deal after he resigned, that’s usually how ex-Presidents get a few million in compensation after they finish their terms. This might be a more modern thing but I recall Grant wrote his memoirs in a hurry as he was dying from cancer and wanted to leave some money for his wife.

My sister-in-law’s father almost got taken in by this scam. They convinced him it was my nephew, and he needed money. He was in a store trying to buy pre-paid MC when the store employees told him it was most likely a scam and he should call his daughter to see what was up.

My dad got the call, and he kept them on the phone for a bit. He thought if they’re talking to me that can’t be scamming someone else.

There is a good chance that I was one of the very first Watergate protestors to directly confront Nixon, catch his eye, and make him flinch away. It was fall of 1972 and I was just out of the Navy and PISSED!

Well look at that… package delivered with almost a half hour to go in the delivery window.

The van, according the map, went up the driveway I mentioned earlier, the one that hasn’t been connected to the driveway to my place in at least 50 years. There’s only two residences on that driveway and I suppose one of them could have had a delivery scheduled for the same day as myself… but I doubt it. I bet his computer trusted the outdated map.

My mom might well have let the guy take over her computer.

yeah, my dad fell for one of those “your computer’s been hacked. call….” I fortunately walked in the room while he was busy giving the guy access to his laptop.

It isn’t just about distance, they will also factor in number of left turns, and traffic, and lord knows what else. They are very good at plotting the route that is most effecient for them, unfortunately, that is not always most efficient for you. And sometimes drivers just screw up and miss a delivery. One day I had multiple packages scheduled that were on the truck for delivery, the driver missed one of the 3 and it didn’t come back til the next day because they can’t just turn around when they realize they made a mistake.

mine do, because I find the UPS depot number, ordinarily well hidden, and I will bitch on the phone to the manager until they call the driver and have them turn around.

UPS dropped my “signature required” 2000 dollar strat at the apartment below me because the driver was too goddamned shiftless to note that it was the wrong number. I cannot tell you how very tempted I was to tell them “hey never got this, never signed for anything,” but I figured the guy’s job might actually be on the line for something like that.

And with one seemingly straightforward court ruling, an unwitting Indiana judge has unleashed chaos upon the Internet.

wishtv.com

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WISH) — A judge in Fort Wayne has ruled tacos and burritos are sandwiches.

In his ruling, the judge wrote, “The proposed Famous Taco restaurant falls within the scope of the general use approved in the original Written Commitment. The proposed Famous Taco restaurant would serve made-to-order tacos, burritos, and other Mexican-style food, and would not have outdoor seating, drive through service, or serve alcohol. The Court agrees with Quintana that tacos and burritos are Mexican style sandwiches, and the original Written Commitment does not restrict potential restaurants to only American cuisine-style sandwiches.”

As I said, I was clutching at straws. Someday, the fighting will end. Can we even imagine what a peace will look like? I always think giving them good economic reasons could work. Maybe build up the pier the US is placing there to create the Gaza Seaport that has been discussed for over 20 years. Hook this port up as a terminus for Biden’s India -Europe- Middle East Economic Corridor and make it a free port.

It’ll require a cpomplete change in the politics of the area but this could be one of those times wherethe possibility for huge amounts of money overcome hatred ;-) (Yes, I’m a dreamer). I mean, MEECO is one of the things that was bringing SA to the table to recognize Israel before Hamas attacked.

If I’m not mistaken the LA republicon party wants the current new maps and was against this suit being filed. Their fear of another new map is that blacks would still get the two districts and that one or two other districts might be drawn in a way that would make them competitive. The SC decision is typically partisan again. Beau has a video about this. His take seems entirely plausible.
