An Artist Abbreviated
My late wife Jot should have had a career as a cartoonist, or at least much more time to practice her art, but life intervened and she spent most of her time rescuing various women and children in distress. But she was also the type of writer/illustrator who secreted notes and sketches all over the house in odd corners, random boxes, and seldom-read books. So I’ve been on a scavenger hunt to find and scan everything, hoping to compile her work for our kids.
Here are a few of her early pieces, drawn before we met:
Note the hand positionFrom Jot’s children’s book Belinda Adair, about a young girl who refused to wash her hair.
One day Things came and lived in it, and refused to leave.
Jot was not a wearer of jewelry. I managed to decorate her only to this extent, a ring and a silver cuff, which she humored me by wearing on our honeymoon. I mention this only because she didn’t want to spend money on an engagement ring, so I bought her a 128k Mac. She loved it, and began churning out legal documents for freelance money, and producing cartoons.
Left-Handed Cats
All cats drawn with the left hand. She enjoyed the uncertain line quality I think.
This is Jot and Margaret after they moved in with me; waiting for me to fly back from business in LA. She’s not sure about where our relationship is going.
Jot began working in mosaics, and the left-handed cats followed.
