2) people who entered the field in the last 10-15 years, don’t know the hardware or software that was common 30+ years ago, so the oldsters can command top dollar
You would be surprised what IBM has done with their mainframes even as far back as the 1990’s - new instructions were added to deal with the quirks of Unix (i.e., null terminated strings), making the G5/G6 series Spec 1170 compliant -and with Java, supporting it in specialty processors which doesn’t go against your MSU count. And IBM was doing Virtual Machines decades before it became fashionable.
