And it seems that it hit the support with the bow at an angle so that the artificial island the support stood on couldn’t take the brunt of the impact, but the support took part of it, collapsing, leading to a cascading failure of the cantilever portion of the bridge.
And the containers may be loaded, just not with very dense stuffs.
And yeah, sometimes you have dumb lucks in disasters like this, like the Almö Bridge Disaster which also happened in the middle of the night… And the presence of mind of a truck driver to block the road on one side, probably saved lives.
True about the Almö Bridge disaster: but it was unfortunate that eight (?) drivers didn’t see the bridge out (it was a foggy night), and drove off it before the road on the other side was closed.
