Living Fossil Finds Love (Or Something Like It)

Weird • Views: 5,020

A lizard is never too old for love.

(CNN) — It took about 110 years and some delicate surgery on his most private parts, but Henry — a lizard-like creature from New Zealand — is now a dad.

Henry, a tuatara who, as far as curators at Southland Museum in New Zealand know, had never mated before, hooked up with Mildred, a younger woman of about 80, in March.

In July she laid 11 healthy eggs and, this week, all 11 of them hatched — the last one on Wednesday.

“Eleven out of eleven,” curator Lindsay Hazley said Friday morning. “Bloody brilliant. We had a champagne breakfast to celebrate.”

UPDATE at 1/30/09 5:10:34 pm:

Here’s video of the cute little tykes. (Warning! NSFW!)

...hmm, the tuatara is the one living species most like a dinosaur, so naturally the question arises, at the risk of yet another controverisal thread, did any of the eggs evolve? For example have any of the little lizard youngsters started a blog?

Important questions.

Tuataras are the only living descendants of an order, related to dinosaurs, that flourished 200 million years ago.

OT: Bus Rollover Near Hoover Dam Kills 5 (Update: 6 Confirmed Dead Now)

DOLAN SPRINGS, Nev. -- Five people have been killed and at least 16 others have been injured after a tour bus rollover on Interstate 93 in Arizona, just beyond the Hoover Dam, park service officials said.

Arizona State Police received the call about the incident at mile marker 28 just after 3 p.m. Friday.

Authorities have requested six helicopters and four ambulances to the scene to deal with the injuries. Most of the victims are expected to be brought to the University Medical Center, but some are expected to also go to Kingman Hospital in Kingman, Ariz.

Five fatalities have been confirmed at the scene, DPS spokesman Lt. James Warriner said.

Most of the remaining injured are being brought to the University Medical Center, park service officials said.

Officials are not releasing details about what may have caused the wreck at this time, but did say the bus is lying on its side.

Cheating on your taxes? IRS now gives you 3 options:

1) Pay the back taxes, plus penalties and interest.
2) Do time in jail.
3) Get elected or appointed to a federal government position.

Gaza victims describe human shield use

Members of a Gaza family whose farm was turned into a "fortress" by Hamas fighters have reported that they were helpless to stop Hamas from using them as human shields.

They told the official Palestinian Authority daily newspaper that for years Hamas had used their property and homes as military installations from which the group would launch rockets into Israel, dig tunnels and store arms. According to the victims, those who tried to object were shot in the legs by Hamas operatives.

UN to investigate this war crime? Not so much.

ABC news has picked up the Tom Daschel tax cheat shit,

"the good natured pol a long time friend and supporter of Pres. Obama will most likely be given a pass by his Senate colleagues......"

snake den of unhuman tax cheats aka Senate

Tom Daschle, D-S.D A-Hole.

...The Cadillac and driver were never part of Daschle's official compensation package at InterMedia but Mr. Daschle -- who as Senate majority leader enjoyed the use of a car and driver at taxpayer expense -- didn't declare their services on his income taxes, as tax laws require.

During the vetting process to become HHS secretary, Daschle corrected the tax violation, voluntarily paying $101,943 in back taxes plus interest, working with his accountant to amend his tax returns for 2005 through 2007. ...

Would Dash-hole have paid those taxes back if he wasn't appointed by the Messiah? I doubt it. So many tax cheats on the left. Disgusting.

Three-Way Lizard Sex War Goes Back 175 Million Years

A three-way sex struggle resembling the game rock-paper-scissors may have existed for 175 million years or more in lizards, research now suggests.

The reptilian triads may be far more common than previously recognized — and may even shape the way humans behave, the scientists said

"You either cooperate, or take by force, or take by deception," said researcher Barry Sinervo, a behavioral geneticist at the University of California, Santa Cruz. "It's one of those basic games that structures life."

Free health insurance for the unemployed.

[Link: www.powerlineblog.com...]

The "stimulus" also hijacks Cobra, a program that lets the unemployed retain access to their former company health benefits -- usually for about 18 months. The new stimulus permits any former employee over the age of 55 to keep using Cobra right up until they qualify for Medicare at age 65. And here's the kicker: Whereas employees were previously responsible for paying their health premiums while on Cobra, now the feds will pay 65%. CBO estimates? Seven million Americans will have the feds mostly pay their insurance bills in 2009.

Grab a piece of the unicorn.

From the "public" link:

The survey suggests that the plan would be slightly more popular if it offered tax cuts and no spending. About 43 percent of respondents thought that was a good idea, compared with 39 percent who disagreed.

This is actually extremely encouraging. It's a sign that Obama and the Left are NOT in power because most Americans want socialism.

Maybe they were just mad about the war. Maybe they blamed the Republicans for the meltdown, but really don't believe what the other side is selling (how many even KNEW what Obama was selling?). Maybe they let the media color their impressions. Maybe they just love a charismatic speaker (like Reagan & Clinton), and thought "the One" was "cool". Maybe they thought it would be neat to have a "black president" (even if he's really biracial). Maybe they thought McCain was an old coot and Palin was a hillbilly. People get elected for all kinds of stupid reasons.

This is cause for hope (if you'll pardon the term) that the good ol' U S of A will not go socialist.

Yes, I'm at the end of the state you probably don't even know exists. ;-)

I'm surprised at your concern. Having had Hillary & Chuck for a while, I was prepared to be happy with anybody who wasn't another socialist traitor (remember Hillary calling our commanding officer in Iraq a liar, even before he said anything - just because they expected him to give hope that we were winning?).

I have not seen a complete list of her positions, but a decent list I saw didn't show her as being for much of anything I have a big problem with, and vice-versa. She's from a rural upstate congressional district, and that makes all the difference. Lizards might enjoy, for example, that she has 100% support from the NRA.

At the moment, I happen to be sitting in the very township where SUNY/Buffalo resides. No fair! You're a Lizard, not the average Joe down there. My favorite instance of NYC geographical ignorance I heard of was when a friend of mine told someone he was from VT when he was down there. As the one guy struggled as to where that was, his friend chided him, "No, it's Upstate!"

The talk of pork in the article doesn't alarm me much. We know that practically all of them do it. If anything it's refreshing to see a politician be open & honest about it. These days I get more focused on "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" (read that, "pro-American foreign policy and capitalism").

Her "flip-flopping" - to the extent that it exists - seems to focus on gay rights issues, which are not hot buttons for me.

Hey - one of my ancestors fought in the Revolution along the NY/CT border down there. Lived in a little place called "North Salem", in the NE corner of Westchester Co. 15-year-old kid, apparently with a lot of spunk - got shot up and captured, almost died & got a crippled up arm for life.

A trillion thanks, gt-gt-gt-gt grandpa!

Very small world! I liked it upstate. The pace of life is so different. My youngest still roots for the Sabres. We also live in Westchester County...the southern part, near da Bronx.

I just do not feel that she is the one, but OTOH? There is enough time to see exactly where she stands. I hope that a Republican will run, and win...not easy in a blue state.

My ancestors came here in the late 1800's, and early 20th centuries...3 from Lithuania, and one from the East End of London. They came to escape Jew hate. My maternal Granddad served as an apprentice in the Royal Navy at age 14, and came here when he served for an unknown number of years, and enlisted in the US Army. He lied re his name and age, and stated that his parents lived in Boston (my home town), gave a false name & address, and he was taken! I found all this out about 20 years ago, as my Grandfather died before I was born. It made it very hard to get a veteran's pension for my Gram zt"l, but they did, as they found papers. My cousin, who served in the Army, was going through records where he was stationed, and found our Grandfather had served in the very same unit...the fake name, etc., were all there. Incredible.

As for your ancestors? All I can say is 'thank you', and bless you! What a family history.

"You either cooperate buy the presidency, or take it by force, or take it by deception," said researcher president Barry SinervoObama, behavioral geneticist at the University of California, Santa Cruz. a corrupt empty suit. "It's one of those basic games that structures life."

Don't forget that this is NYS! If we could get a Republican in there, they might be a RINO, and might or might not actually be better off on many things. Still - like you say - we don't really know everything about her yet.

Ok - you know that weird experience where the moment you learn some exotic new word or concept, and then the very next day you hear it in a totally different context, as if people had been talking about it all along?

Just yesterday I was in London with a few hours to burn before catching a flight, so I wandered into the British Natural History Museum. For some reason, I spent quite a few minutes in front of a display case examining the skeletal differences between lizards and, yes, tuataras, a creature I had never heard of. Lo, and today the creature shows up on LGF, totally giving me the shudders. Could this be more than coincidence - perhaps the invisible hand of the Intelligent Designer tapping me on the shoulder and winking?

Do visit this musuem if you get to London. It is a truly fantastic place, and a shrine to Darwin.
