Being very pedantic here… but unless you make our star the center of the coordinate system of the universe we really don’t go around the sun, we oscillate (nearly perfectly sinusoidally) along the path our star carves out along it’s own oscillating (and highly perturbated) path around the center of mass of our galaxy…. which is itself in relative motion to the other massive bodies in our local group of galaxies…

It will be ten years this June since I graduated high school. Drove my high school classmates crazy I bet with my obnoxious liberalism back then. It will be fun to see old friends this year and to tell stories of the past ten years. I’ve been around quite a bit the past ten years. From San Francisco to Bratislava. Known the lows but the good times too. This past year has been great. I became an uncle for the first time and I love my niece as if she were my own daughter.

I have two nieces and a nephew. The nephew - the oldest of the lot, who is 11 - has already climbed up and skied down 10 or so 14,000 ft. peaks in Colorado. He’s summited probably over 20 of the 54 14ers. Those kids are a trip!

Took me just a couple of moments to find out that it’s about as complex as I figured it was….
The celebration of the new year on January 1st is a relatively new phenomenon. The latter is the hard part. Most people I have known have been older than me, many are now passed, some will do so shortly. I need to start making younger friends.

Funny you say that, all of the people that matter the most to me, the folks that I would consider dear and close friends, are pretty much all older than me. I have a lot of friends my age and younger, but they seem so transient. It’s like I get to be friends with them for a few years then I never see them again.
Such as life in most ski towns.

Even in my drinking days, I tended to either stay in on New Years Eve, or at the most, party some place like a hotel where I could spend the night in safety. There were way too many amateur drunks out there. Hell, they didn’t even know enough to close one eye if they were seeing double.

Mr. Calochortus and I will follow our tradition of ringing in the New Year at home on Eastern Standard time. Since we’re in CA we can drink our champagne at a civilized hour.
This system didn’t work as well for the few years we actually lived in the Eastern time zone. We had shop for a better time zone.
My most important resolution is to try to remember that it is, in fact 2015, and not date things “2014” any more.

Speaking of hospitals, my father got his latest round of scans of his neck reviewed today. The VA is, in the time-honored tradition, moving with all the pace of a glacier in getting him care for the pinched nerve in his neck. First doctor tells him three months ago that the pain and tingling in his right arm and neck is due to arthritis impinging on his spinal cord and he might need surgery to remove some of the inflamed tissue. Month later, another doctor says he needs an MRI, then changes diagnosis to multiple blown disks and possible bone spurs. Then two weeks ago, yet another doctor, a pain specialist, says the MRI was inconclusive and he needs to have some X-rays taken because it might be a cracked vertebrae.
So he goes back to that doctor today, only to be told what the first doctor told him three months ago: He’s got arthritis in his neck and now the VA bean counters want to continue the “conservative” treatment path of injections.

Most of it will but it depends on what happens once the Cubs reach the World series and on if their getting there is a one-off or something more.
But I the Red Sox fanbase has largely stayed since the BoSox won the World Series. Of course that’s helped by the fact that Boston has won another WS championship since then and remains one of the AL’s best teams.

Back when I was learning html and javascript because it was there, I wrote a solar system simulator just using Newton’s law of gravity and and the timer built into the browser. You could set any one of the eleven objects as the center of the system: The sun, any of the nine planets, or the moon. It was a lot of fun watching the planets from the moon.

Only one man I know who started a series with everything planned out and that was JMS with Babylon 5. And even that fell apart almost from the beginning when one of the key actresses of the first planned arc said she wouldn’t returning after the pilot.

Why just a couple of weeks ago an old high school chum was shot in the face by one of his neighbors. The shooter is claiming self-defense from a home invasion, no friend of the deceased is buying it.
It remains “under investigation” by the Sheriff’s Department to this day.

Well, this is bit different. The homeowner in this case didn’t fire until the man was actually trying to enter his house and he issued a warning before he fired. He also fired only one shot. So he did more than the law required and he could not have known the person trying to get in had a history of sleepwalking and didn’t know what he was doing. So the shooting was tragic, but in my view it was justifiable.

I’m staying in tonight for a number of reasons…
1. I had no plans anyway!
2. It’s DFW and driving anywhere on a drinking holiday is like playing Battleship with Death, except he’s better at it than in Bill & Ted.
3. Rain/mix/sleet is scheduled to start around 2 A.M. here so even if I was going out… I wouldn’t be.
There’s a bottle of Yellow Tail “Bubbles” in my immediate future (which by the way is a fantastic cheap alternative to Champagne. It’s 90% of the Champagne experience for 25% of the price, and I say that as a wine snob.)
Besides the fizz I’m not sure what to do. Watch something on TV? Goof around on the internet? Decisions, decisions.

Greetings from the countryside of Hunan, China. We are already 12 hours into 2015 here. So far, all is well.
The occasion of my visit is the wedding of a fine young lady, a former student who 18 months ago was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Chemo was successful, and her hair has grown back in again. She looks fine.

This homeowner didn’t just fire away, that’s one of the tragic parts. He used restraint and gave an honest warning, but through no fault of his without him having any way to know it, the man trying to break in couldn’t understand the warning.
This incident was tragic because no one really did anything wrong and somebody died anyways.

Yeah, but the problem is that the belief that there would be no fifth season meant JMS had to thrown all the ideas he’d saved up for that into the fourth, closing up all the hanging threads, only to find out at the last minute that the series had been greenlit for another season. So the fifth season suffered from all the big battles having already been fought.
Which is why when I binge-rewatched B5, I skipped the last season. Lost interest.

Modern naval tactics has always been sort of neat to follow since there is an inherent conservatism regarding risk of losing ships. In part simply due to the time and resources spent in getting a ship built, commissioned, manned, and trained up. You have to put them in harm’s way in order to win, but still don’t want to lose units. Thus you see ships get “mission killed” with relatively non-threatening damage since to continue without withdrawing for repairs would risk complete loss. But the withdraw of the unit (often with protecting escorts) would also affect the on-going operation.

I remember a conversation with my dad about the Russkies shooting down MH17… I told him about how all kinds of details had been sussed out and posted over twitter. Like the actual launch vehicle had been tracked into town, photographed, the missile launch trail possibly photographed, tracks from the vehicle were spotted on satellite, then the offending launcher now minus one missile was tracked back through another town and back into pro-Russian territory… And all this was disseminated over twitter and blogs… Back when I was a kid, stuff like that might come out as a footnote in a Tom Clancy novel ten years after the fact.
I think part of the growing pains with twitter, blogs, etc. exposing these horrible wrong-doings like MH17, Ferguson, etc. is learning how to filter and find the truth.
It’s interesting how the TV no longer controls the narrative. Now you get two versions of a story - what’s gleaned online, and what’s on the boob tube. Fox and CNN, etc. are so obviously reacting to public groundswell that they come off looking like they speak a foreign language. Actually maybe the TV networks are as much in the dust as the not-twitter-savvy… We’re all just trying to make up a story to fit the noise.

I’ll be making the southern New Year’s meal of black eyed peas, collards, rice, corn muffins, and a ham slice (for the meat eaters) later, which I do every year. Good stuff. : ) Instead of using the ham bone left over from xmas, I spice up the peas with red pepper flakes, garlic and onion. The collards get a dose of wine vinegar and a little sugar.

Leelah Alcorn’s death was tragic, but harassing her parents is not the answer
I’m against gender roles—let me say that out front. I’m a feminist who thinks that males are not being encouraged/trained enough to accept “female” roles while women are fighting to achieve parity with them, and often cave in to accepting “male behavior” in order to “get ahead”. Also, I don’t think enough scientific inquiry has gone into the phenomenon known as “transgender” yet. And even though the Alcorns are religious people, no doubt they loved the person they considered their son, loved him/her dearly as he/she developed during the different phases of childhood and as most parents do, did the best they could, for the people they are.
I think Leelah Alcorn’s suicide was a tragic mistake, and a self-centered one in which Leelah wasn’t thinking clearly. There were other alternatives, but her impatience got the better hand (almost a hallmark of adolescence). Kids at school were supportive even if parents weren’t, and she would have been 18 this year, could have gotten a job and supported herself, so there was an out. But from reading the “suicide note” it also appeared that Leelah wasn’t prepared to even think about what her decision would cost in so many ways.
We’ve criticized the “ammo-sexuals” for allowing children to handle and use guns at an early age (something I wouldn’t do). Yet, when parents of a 6 yr old, because of something parents see fixated in the child’s mind, begin transitioning that child from female to male, I have to say, “Whoa!”. This isn’t a decision for a 6 yr old child to make—the parents made it for her.
When my g-grandson was 2, he would, from time to time, say that he was a girl. He also stated, not just recently, at 4, that he wanted to marry me when he grows up. At this point, he’s also not afraid to get into the “I hate you”/”I love you” terms as well. Children get confused, easily, and pick up clues from parents, their foremost caregivers. He doesn’t like discipline, as most kids don’t, such as picking up his room, being on time, etc, but he does it, is OK with it. As he travels childhood, I have no idea how he will continue to view the world and how his contacts outside this home—with others, on the internet, with popular culture, etc—will affect him. No parent does, but we hope what we consider “good discipline” will prevail to keep him or her from harm. But most of us do the best we can when conflicts arise, and esp when the wants of the children contrast with our own values. Taking a concrete position is not my style, either, unless a child exhibits disruptive/self-endangering behavior, and, it just makes issues more contentious, and open lines of communication with a child are so very important, practiced with love and understanding.
When I was 17, I made an important decision for which I was not prepared (coupled with a father and stepmother anxious enough to get rid of me) and a short 3 yrs later, was a single mother with 2 children, divorced, with no place to go but enough skills to at least get a job to support them. It’s not a road I encourage others to follow, either. In my mind, I was “in love” and that was all that mattered, and it changed my life completely, at a time when I should have been thinking of college and preparing myself for adulthood. Even so, I loved my sons dearly and tried to guide them as well as I could, both with success and failure. I was a “liberal” parent with liberal friends living in communities, unfortunately, where education wasn’t always valued and even jobs sometimes hard to find, and kids were sometimes as troubled as their own parents. In a way, they were caught between 2 worlds.
Why do we have parents if children are able to make their own absolute decisions at any stage of their childhood? This will always be a conundrum when kids are being supported by us in every way—socially, economically, and emotionally—and not in a position to be on their own. We don’t allow a child to leave home because they simply disagree with us; we don’t allow them to place their hand on a hot stove just because they want to experience it. Yes, they have minds of their own and as they begin to think more for themselves, which should always be encouraged and spoken about, they sort out the kinds of values they pick up not just from us, but from others, and that’s a lifelong process and we hopefully give them the tools to do that in a good way.
It’s always been a dilemma and always will be, but it also works itself out over time with more success than not.

I would expect they want ID or address information in case something comes up regarding the stray. Medical issues (like rabies possibly), conflict regarding the animal actually being a stray*, etc. etc.
* - People are dicks enough that they would kidnap an animal and then claim it trespassed or was otherwise a stray in order to “get” at someone. Just look at the examples of people murdering or mutilating pets in that regard.

When Lawrence got nasty, police got called and then he got even more nasty, after which he resisted arrest, got into a struggle with a cop, and then got shot dead.

Well, there’s some good news on that score:
The shooting is being investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation, a division of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. The findings will be turned over to the Houston County District Attorney’s Office.
It would be better if the findings were made public and if prosecution was handled by a state agency, but at least its being investigated at the state level. But then again, this is Alabama so YMMV on how much such an investigation is worth.

Law enforcement is starting the new year off on a great footing. Killing yet another unarmed person, with scant information about the situation. Are there no less lethal means of handling disputes? As you say, this situation didn’t involve a person of color, and it goes against the right wing talking points given that the victim here was white, a sovereign citizen, and sovereign citizens have an anti-law enforcement bent that is well established and with considerable precedent for violence against law enforcement.

The problem with that in the case we were talking about is that ‘sovereign citizens’ have a particularly deadly belief in “pew pew pew Murica”, one that has translated many times into the murder of law enforcement officers. The Dothan cops who responded in this case knew they were dealing with someone like that by the time shots were fired, and that likely lead them to see Lawrence as dangerous.

Morning chores attended, I’m now groovin’ on a delicious hot cup of fresh brewed coffee - I’d zap ya some if I could BigPapa - after a very late night. No sleeping here on NYE with all the fireworks going off on the bayou into the wee hours so I stayed up til about 3am watching thru to the end of season 4 of Dexter. I’m enjoying that series despite the discomfort of realizing that I’m seriously rooting for a serial killer to be successful. Very well done series that I look forward to continuing today.

I’ve posted before, I was in that Cincinnati Who crowd. I can attest to exactly what you are saying. And, I think I went through at least 4 different personal reactions from that show based on what part I saw or heard before, during and after the show.
I went from being a bit scared by the crowd, to really enjoying the show, to then finding out on the way home what happened not knowing before or during the show. And the fourth reaction was years later reading how close I was to the deaths.

Speaking of hoarders, my best friend sold a loveseat to a woman she says turned out to be a hoarder. She said there was no place to walk in the house and she didn’t know where the woman was going to put it, although she said she is moving. The woman’s husband is divorcing her after 38 yrs of marriage. She also said her kids don’t talk to her.
Sad, very sad. I suspect being treated as a pariah by your own family instead of getting you some help may well have something to do with hoarding escalation as well.

In the case of the former, who would leave a purse in the front of a cart with a firearm in it? Women, including me, often turn away from the cart, take a small step to get something off the shelf. At that point the purse is not in view and criminals have been known to take wallets and checkbooks at that point.

I think not. I think she shares responsibility with the entire culture in America that thinks it is okay to sacrifice thousands of human beings every year to guns.

It’s totally worth it. After all, every once in a blue moon an armed confrontation might not involve a good guy getting shot. I cannot help you there. That weirds me out pretty badly, too. I live in one of the cities that perennially tops the most dangerous/most crime ridden lists. I’ve had cars broken into, neighbors mugged outside my apartment building, police shootings down the block. I even periodically have reason to be in the rough parts of town.
I thought really hard about trying to get a CCW when I first moved here. California law makes them basically impossible to get, but even without that, when I really did the math, the answer was carrying the gun was most dangerous to me. Either by accidentally shooting myself or having someone snag the gun and using it against me. In nearly a decade of living here, I have been in zero situations where a gun would have been handy.
I think my Sheriff and the other local Sheriffs all have the correct policy of denying CCW permit applications. But it isn’t nearly enough. There are too many guns out there.

The gun went off and shot her husband in the arm.Someone else could have been killed. Aside from the fact that she didn’t know what the hell she was doing, feeling that you need to carry a gun here in Glendora (Where the incident occurred) is the height of paranoia. It’s probably one of the safest, most quiet towns in the country. Crime is so low here that the cops characterize illegal parking as “A Glendora felony.” Fucking idiots are inevitable, fucking idiots with firearms is an imposition by our bought and paid for lawmakers.

I high school when the summer when it was hot outside, we’d leave the windows rolled down when the car was parked in the driveway or garage. When we moved to Indiana, my best friend always laughed at me.
I automatically swiped my hand across the lock as I closed the car door. It was an automatic, one fluid movement, conditioned behavior.
Now we have the clicker to lock the car.
which brings me to another point.
Now we have cars that lock automatically have the car has been moving forward for several feet. This really scares me.
I still lock my car in a reverse of the above motion.
If a criminal is going to commit the crime, it will be while I am putting my seatbelt on or before I’ve put the car in “drive”. NOT WHILE I’M DRIVING THE CAR.

If it looks vaguely like a bag, someone is going to throw a busted sparkplug through your window and snag it.

I have mixed feelings about that ruling. As much as it allows me to have better options for my personal security, I think there is a public safety argument there. Basically, I’m not sure what the right answer is. A ruling that lets me carry a folding baton also lets the Hell’s Angels carry worn out motorcycle chains. OTOH, I had to go back to the 60s for an example like that, since all the gangs around here have upgraded to handguns in the last 50 years, and that’s definitely worse.

I feel the need to respond to this to point out that Leelah’s parents were not only unsupportive but were taking her to therapists in an effort to convince her she was wrong about her feelings.
I think most of us agree that’s wrong when it is being done by parents to their gay children, and it’s just as wrong when it’s being done to a transgendered child. We aren’t talking a 6 year old who “doesn’t understand” the world, we are talking a 17 year old who, as you said, would have been a legal adult in a year.
Does it make harassing the family right? Of course not. But let’s not pretend that they weren’t being at best unsupportive. I would call this abuse, just like I would consider it abuse for a Christian family to force a gay minor into conversion therapy.
