Germany, in calculating the 2% of its budget to be spent on military, also includes the amount it spends on foreign aid, social assistance (war prevention) and peacekeeping measures.
I assume DT insists that it only counts if it goes “BOOM!”
re: #10 Timothy Watson
If only The Hill weren’t a clickbait cesspool of every political journalistic trope out there, I could take that story seriously.
Sad to see so many “liberal” minded folk get so easily swayed that the “Russian thing” isn’t important. To them, collusion with foreign powers, misrepresenting funding sources, passing around money, under-the-table influence, etc. is just a distraction, from apparently really important issue.
Usually socialize health care.
The obvious problem is that there is a false choice here. Our society can tackle more than one thing at a time.
Also, I find them to be blatantly utopian in their thinking of how society works. They think socialized healthcare somehow can exist when there is a breakdown of the rule of law and the rise of autocracies.
The problems of Trump and his administration with Russia and other foreign governments strikes at the very heart of what we can trust in our leadership and in the process of our government.
Some self-styled progressives seem to miss that point.
I say this after watching one of PZ Meyer’s video blogs from last month, in which a couple of other FTB personalities join him for a conversation.

My senator (Ben Sasse, R-NE) weighs in on the Senate deathcare bill.
It’s not cruel enough.
(Goes to the Scottsbluff, NE Star-Herald, more at the link):
“Conservative Nebraskans have lots of reasons to be frustrated: this bill is not a full repeal; this bill is not a full replace; what this bill is is mostly just a Medicaid reform package,” Sasse said in a statement to The World-Herald. “Nebraskans are dissatisfied with it and so am I.”
—-
Of course, Senator Sasse doesn’t mention liberal Nebraskans, because he doesn’t represent us.
—-
The Koch Brothers are his actual constituents, not Nebraskans.
—-
The senator was among attendees at a recent donor conference for the Koch brothers’ political network in Colorado. During one session open to reporters, Sasse was asked about the health care bill.
“The press is here, right?” Sasse said, according to multiple reports. “I have nothing to announce.”
Sasse had a lot to say about health care when he ran for the Senate. During the 2014 campaign, Sasse noted that he had read all 2,300 pages of the health care law, carried a copy of it on the campaign trail as a prop and said he wanted to focus on patient-centered policy solutions.
“We want to wreck Obamacare, but then we also want to replace it with something that is actually workable, that actually benefits our neighbors,” Sasse said at his campaign announcement.

Sasse is also a Christian. As such, he is less moral than I am (because I care about everyone; by-and-large Christians care about other Christians - which is why they would take my civil rights if they could - and liberal Christian denominations are no exception).

The so-called “AK-47 bandit,” who robbed banks in California, Idaho, Washington, and Nebraska was arrested here.
More at the link:
A sheriff’s deputy spotted him pulling off the highway and realized that he and his vehicle matched the description of a suspect who fired on a Kansas state trooper the evening before on Interstate 70 near Goodland.
When a second deputy arrived, the two officers arrested Gathercole without incident, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
A transcript of a call that Gathercole made from jail quotes him asking his mother to clear his Montana home of guns after his arrest. The transcript was used to obtain a search warrant for the Roundup, Montana, home. Authorities found numerous homemade explosives inside the home on Saturday.
Laura Eimiller, spokeswoman for the FBI in Los Angeles, said the search was connected to a bank robbery investigation.
“Multiple departments are investigating whether evidence found during the search in Montana may be linked to a series of bank robberies currently under investigation in California and other states,” she said.
She declined to confirm or deny that Gathercole is suspected of being the “AK-47 Bandit” who robbed banks in California, Washington and Idaho in 2012 and a Nebraska bank in 2014. However, authorities from two communities where those bank robberies occurred assisted in the search of Gathercole’s home, authorities say.
re: #22 William Lewis
Ooh, love that knee jerk. Think you can hit the ceiling next?
Nope. Waiting for churches to call out the extremists amongst them (isn’t that what Christian conservatives demand of Muslims)?
Tens of millions of Christians in this country support throwing the poor under the bus in the name of tax cuts for the wealthy. I therefore hold I am more moral than those Christians (and I don’t hold to the “no true Christian” argument either).
Are other people having problems reaching various IP addresses?
LGF stopped loading for me for several minutes. Ancestry and Apple stopped replying to pings. But I was able to get to google, as well as cox and yahoo (though with a lot of latency.)
Just wondering if it’s me, or the Cox DNS, or if there is a bigger problem.
Ben Sasse frequently touts his Christian beliefs. No church has called him out for his support of the death penalty, for his representation only of conservative Christians, for his opposition to healthcare for the poor just like Jesus argued (blessed are the wealthy, for they can buy insurance for me to treat them).
Nope. Unless and until I see so-called liberal churches (like the Lutheran church across the street from my house that owns one-eighth of the land in town, pays no taxes, and does no charity work) call out such people, they are no different than “first they came for the Jews, but I said nothing because I’m not Jewish” apologists.
Silence is acceptance, and the overwhelming majority of churches have been silent. A great number are in fact supportive.

There is a component to this training that makes medical sense: doctors need to be present to see exactly how certain diseases progress in a patient over a 24-hour period and to be prepared to work shifts like that in the event of a major catastrophic emergency.
But that is probably not the overriding rationale for instituting such a regimen…

I probably should get off to bed. Ranting about hypocrisy probably isn’t a good thing to do (unless I pick the correct hypocrites).
I’m surprised an editor can not choose words more wisely. There are ways to make a point without throwing the entire group/organization/religion/party under the bus.

My question: We know that Jill Stein is tied to Putin. Could Bernie also be a Putin puppet? He has continued to be less than helpful to the Democrats during the primaries, the election campaign, and post-election. Or is he just a narcissist?
Well, he is a socialist and got married in Russia.

Nope.
Living in Los Angeles for the past 35 years there are two nights I truly hate—July 4th because everyone is shooting off illegal fireworks until 3 or 4 AM in the moring and New Year’s Eve when every idiot with a gun has to go outside and open fire until you guessed it—3 or 4 AM.
Still remember the first year I was out here living with my grandmother and the next door idiot went out right at midnight on New Year’s Eve and opened fire with his gun…and shot out a neighbor’s window…

My opinion is he’s gotten away with so much over such a long period of time, he just doesn’t even care. If it stops him from doing what he wants, it’s bad. 30 years ago I thought this guy was a maggot. Couldn’t see the allure, the fawning, the ass kissing. Who in their right mind would give this guy money? He’s ripped off thousands of people and walked. Crashed casinos which are basically money printing machines. TV, radio, print, all slobbering on this toad. Then a year ago I hear people talking like he just dropped from the sky. No history. No track record. After all, he’s a celebrity.
He’s a sick individual. And the GOP is doing their best behind his chaos to undo decades of progress and social constructs.

re: #177 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
They are a
lobbyingmarketing organization for the gun industry, and their target market is predominantly white.
They’ve long since won the lobbying war. Starting in 2008, they really morphed completely into marketing for the gun and ammo companies by spending all their time and money whipping up white angst about Those People, to sell more guns. And it’s worked! A smaller percentage of American households may have guns, but the ones who do have a shitload of them. And they keep buying more.

African Americans don’t even need to be armed. The white person just needs to feel fear (see: Zimmerman) - even if the fear is irrational - that is good enough for white jurors it seems for the execution of young black males.

Short summary?
They use their media to assassinate real news. They use their schools to teach children that their president is another Hitler. They use their movie stars and singers and award shows to repeat their narrative over and over again. And then they use their ex-president to endorse the resistance. All to make them march, make them protest, make them scream racism and sexism and xenophobia and homophobia and smash windows, burn cars, shut down interstates and airports, bully and terrorize the law abiding — until the only option left is for police to do their jobs and stop the madness.
And when that happens, they’ll use it as an excuse for their outrage. The only way we stop this, the only way we save our country and our freedom is to fight this violence of lies with the clenched fist of truth. I’m the National Rifle Association of America and I’m freedom’s safest place.

FWIW Our favorite RW climate denier but never Trumper Bret Stephens criticized CNN for firing the three journalists, his point being that no reporter is infallible —they made a mistake and the right way to deal with that is to apologize.
No news organization is going to pass an infallibility test, and advancing a perception that we should pass such a test merely sets us up for diminishing public regard. Journalistic honesty is better measured through corrections than dismissals.
That’s a lesson that bears repeating now, as the White House’s media vilification strategy comes to resemble a war on truth itself. I’ve noted elsewhere that Trump’s notion of truth is whatever he can get away with, at any given moment, for any given purpose.

Our president* is being “bullied” by the press and his way of dealing with it is not to keep his head down and focus on the job to which he was elected, it’s to rage-tweet insults at a female news anchor, then trot out its press office back-up hitter to whine to said press about how “bullied” the president* is.
Remember when the dignity of the office was “threatened” by things like tan suits or saying “ni-CLANG!” when talking about race relations?
re: #13 freetoken
The Russia Thing is VERY IMPORTANT

The GOP is doing this performance art bullshit. The media dutifully reports/recycles the same bullshit, and we are still left with a thoroughly compromised White House and GOP leadership that is pushing a reactionary and regressive agenda that undermines US national security daily, as well as the financial security for millions of Americans all because a handful of rich people want to be even richer.
On another note, this sounds an awful lot like what a lot of LGF’ers were complaining about:
I’m sure John McCain is “Troubled” by Trump’s remarks though his history is no better.

Well, if there’s a silver lining to any of this bullshit, it’s that the Wealthcare bill is toast for at least thru the summer.
I don’t trust any of that. It’ll be dead when it’s double tapped and completely killed (zombieland rules). Even then, I wouldn’t trust it even after backing over a couple tanks on it and running it through shredders multiple times and burning the thing and then sprinkling holy water on it.
The GOP doesn’t want people to pay attention to the fact that they’re still intent on destroying health coverage for millions so as to pave the way for massive tax breaks for the rich. Trumpcare is the lynchpin for the tax reform that comes after this (another wave of massive tax breaks for the rich).

I don’t typically (meaning: ever) donate to political campaigns. I can’t imagine the flow of craptastic fundraising emails I would get if I did. It’s annoying enough when I have 10-15 emails in my inbox everyday that I delete without opening because they’re some sort of marketing bullshit (seriously, for some reason, I get two per day from the Ceaser’s hotel chains). And that’s just in my regular email. I have a second one that I pretty much never check that I use whenever I sign up for something that I think is going to send me unwanted email.

Why? He has no respect for it.
Because in democracy, institutions matter. Even if he’s a terrible person (he is) and has no respect for the institutions himself (he doesn’t), we have to preserve the institutions and norms as best we can. On a lot of levels, a functioning democracy - at least as how it is understood to exist in the Post-WWII epoch - relies on institutional traditions and norms. The two greatest threats to our constitutional system were Jackson ignoring the Supreme Court and ordering the Trail of Tears, and the southern war of treason because of an election result. I’d say the third was FDR’s court packing scheme, but the failure to impeach Trump may be rising up the ranks pretty fast. All of those incidents were (are) based on the parties involved rejecting established norms and traditions.

Well, if there’s a silver lining to any of this bullshit, it’s that the Wealthcare bill is toast for at least thru the summer.
I think it is toast now. I understand other Republicans have walked away since the bill was pulled Tuesday. Some say numbers now are in the 20s and you are now hearing a lot of Republicans saying they want a bi-partisan answer.
That is if Trump can get over having to work with the “not serious” Chuck Schumer.

re: #334 KGxvi
Disagree about FDR’s failed court-packing scheme: in fact, it was widespread (and bipartisan) defense of those “established norms and traditions” that sank the plan* - and tarnished Roosevelt’s reputation (still does, in most histories). But I agree that the reflexive partisan defense of Donald Trump - despite his manifest unsuitability for the office - is going to rank right up there with the others.
*that, and the Supreme Court’s eventual “revelation” that Roosevelt’s New Deal programs were not, after all, the heinous evil ravishment of the Constitution that the wingnuts of the day felt they were (and shockingly, still do in large part).

I mean the scheme itself was a threat to norms and traditions, not the end result. Had it been established that a president and willing Congress could just increase the size of the Supreme Court when it didn’t agree with their agenda, we’d have a Supreme Court with 40 members today, and the GOP probably looking to add more.

Republicans are barbarians. Their model for holding office is that of Visigoths in sacked Rome — take what they can while they can — because they aren’t interested in (or capable of) doing the hard work needed to keep a civilization going.

That’s Eisenhower’s best domestic legacy imo.
I’m also pretty stoked how he took the space program away from the military, and made sure NASA was a civilian agency.

In (I think) 1919, then-Lieutenant Eisenhower was assigned to a particular military exercise that would have a lot of repercussions for the future: it was a multi-vehicle Army convoy that undertook to drive from (I think) Maryland to Oakland over the existing road network. It took them something like forty days, over a road system that was scarcely improved since the Wild West days. Supposedly, Ike’s experience led him, as President, to use the excuse of military utility (I think the term “Defense” is still part of the formal designation of the Interstate Highway System) to push for Federal financing of a modern highway network nationwide. Wherever traffic and needy Congressional Districts mandated….

Depends on the orders. But probably for the first time in my life, I can imagine a scenario where the president orders the military to do something and the military brass refuses the order.
I’ve been saying this from day one of him taking office. There have to be talks going on at the Pentagon regarding what they can do to assess the real issues versus Trump wagging dogs or worse, doing something really stupid.

Uh…how many Fox viewers are hover-round with oxygen bottles attached riders or in wheel chairs already. Plus their viewers are known to be elderly and probably many have health issues. And yet, they are going to allow that to be said.
It takes a lot to hate others and ignore your own condition. Basically you screw yourself. It really is a form of self-hate.
Also shows Fox doesn’t give a damn about their viewers. I guess they realize if you keep the hate dialed up you can say and do anything to everybody. Even to your own viewers.
