Ooh wow, I put Adiemus: Songs of Sanctuary on youtube, wanting more. (Thanks, Deb!)The third song came on and Storm and Onyx jumped to alert like it was calling to them, looking for where the music is coming from. Then they came together and swayed together like in a Disney movie then came to me all purry for Big Loves. It’s cat language!

A White House statement cribbed from an Exxon press release says it all really. This article leaves me shaking with rage, as I try my damnedest to avoid plastics and try to zero waste - and then read this, and realise how ineffectual that this.

I’m not sure why anyone thinks waiting until 2019 is going to affect the level of protest that is going to be demonstrated for any Trump visit. I really doubt Trump is going to be any more popular in the UK by then…..about the only thing that would make a difference is if the Republican’s are humiliated in the 2018 elections, which might make British people think it’s not worth protesting Trump as he’s already such a lame duck president.

Apparently it is not a State event - so they can do as they please - but the government can “advise”. It is time all world leaders stopped pandering to the moron - no-one sane would want him at their wedding & he sure won’t be at this one. Whether President Obama attends is another story - but it seems a likely “yes he will”

I wonder if they all picked this method up from William S. Burroughs the notorious Beat writer. I think Cobain actually met and talked with Burroughs. I would imagine Bowie and Dylan were very familiar with the method too as they probably knew of Burroughs and the Beats. Burroughs used that method in many of his books.

It actually is from the Dada movement…part of their rejection of normal art process and thinking.

The creators were both writers (in a sense) and humorists. The era they worked seems to fit, so it would not surprise me if they were also aware of the technique from other artists of the time. It was the Beat and Jazz periods.

They were probably all wired up on bennies and pot and got all creative and stuff from it.

Well, I just had an excellent interaction with a Verizon sales representative. They had messed up my FiOS plan change (got rid of cable ‘cause we stream everything and upgraded to gigabit because reasons that involving the wow factor and saving about $15 a month, too) and I called to explain that my latest bill and reality didn’t reflect the changes correctly. And, he fixed the issue, killed TV, said my upgrade would be active tomorrow, and there would be a box in the mail to return the box. And, it was over. No fuss, no hard sell on the tv removal; he did ask why and accepted the answer with only a nominal “not even $10 for local channels?” thing.

Maybe it’s a poor sign that I was impressed with what should not be a trying experience, but it made me happy that my ‘net provider’s worker bee was polite and helpful.

I think as far as the GOP is concerned, things only have to “go over well” for a year - until the 2018 midterms: which gives them 11 months from now to try (desperately, pathetically and fruitlessly, one hopes) to distract the voting public from noticing that the much-hyped budget bill will, in fact, do little/nothing for the bulk of them.
Myself, if I were in charge of the DNC’s campaign strategy for the midterms, I would make this (maybe pushed home by ads featuring “serious” accountant-types) one of the Party’s major points. But that’s smart politicking, so they probably won’t.
I also have the unpleasant feeling that said “distraction” by Trump and the Republicans is going to consist mainly of appeals to prejudices, harping on “religious liberty” BS, and anti-immigrant fear-mongering with a nice side-helping of covert racism (or possibly overt - the “alt-right” hasn’t gone away). Fun times ahead…..

I got to see the Vermeer exhibit and found it very interesting to compare/contrast Vermeer with his peers who often used the same subjects - riffing off each others’ works.

In fact, I actually liked the works of Steen more than Vermeer. The exhibit also pointed out how the artists frequently put subtexts into their works - paintings within a painting as a critique of the subject matter.

Well, I’m out of very much good feelings or hope for 2018. The well is done gone dry.

I just paid my first $560/month health insurance payment, and can look forward to paying at least $7,000 with my taxes. A good friend spent Christmas in the hospital with her mother, who was possibly having a heart attack. A big fire in my old hometown burned two stores on the town square, including my favorite-ever coffee shop. Still no hope for a job any time in the future.

That was my big argument against McCain — why should anybody expect that being a war hero conveys any expertise in environmental matters, education, transportation, economics, or any other damn thing?

The Doctor’s answer:

It seems the Doctor always needs a companion to point out the obvious: Maybe, she says, that force that keeps good and evil in balance is just some bloke, putting things right wherever he goes. Maybe the Doctor is the one real fairytale.

Seems like a good strategy for dealing with the current world too - and that we need someone to help try and tip the balance to good.

I also spotted the Queen’s message for Christmas yesterday, and while I can picture just about every president making the same exact message, I just can’t imagine Trump saying it - even if it came from a teleprompter.

He just doesn’t have it in him. Everything he says and does is about him, and he lacks all empathy and understanding of others. We are so much worse off because of it.

I even slipped in “May The LORD have mercy on your soul” and “May The LORD bless you” in Swedish (Må HERREN ha nåd över din själ, Må HERREN välsigna dig) and Finnish (Olkoon Herra armollinen sinun sielustasi, Herra siunatkoon teitä)
Guess once which two got three (3) days in the cooler (banned) for “attacking other users”? Me and the moderate republican. Also, the mods were watching for the entire 2½ hours and did nothing, and are now saying I insulted the ARWNJ in a foreign language…

The annual Boxing Day music fest, party, and feast at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument (Wikipedia) was called on account of the weather (they got way more snow further west than we did).

(Agate has a Boxing Day celebration every year; it’s a long story but basically has to do with the woman who donated the land being from Canada; she threw Boxing Day celebrations every year at her house).

Every year the local bluegrass group performs (I am not a member but have a standing invitation). Considering how hard it was just getting around town this morning, driving all the way over to Agate would likely be impossible (especially since it is way out in the middle of nowhere).

Yeah, too bad he couldn’t join us for our evil, liberal Christmas Eve. Eight atheists and a Jewish couple for a very, very good dinner (if I do say so myself) filled with all sorts of good feelings and happy conversation. Then the immediate family exchanged gifts-a few token items and a bunch of contributions to worthy causes. It is a delight (that these folks will probably never know) to be gift or be gifted a contribution to some group and have the recipient as well as the giver to be genuinely happy about it. (Also takes a bunch of pressure off the lead-up to the big day.)
None of us mind if Christians observe it as a religious holiday. Why would we? We do what works for us, and don’t spend waste our time making sure others observe the day in the way we do.

OK, that is a redeeming feature. My only exposure is trying to do some genealogical work with the Hiski Project’s amazing, fantastic records online. The trouble is when you can’t just copy and paste into Google translate, or when you’re trying to remember which index heading is for births, or marriages, or what. The records themselves were kept by the Swedish Church and are in Swedish, so are slightly easier to decipher.
Fun fact: Priests (or whomever else actually wrote the entries) tended to have far better penmanship in more urban areas than rural ones.

Until you make the realization Finnish is written as it sounds…
Single consonant = soft consonant, Double consonant = hard consonant.
Single vowel = short vowel, Double vowel = elongated vowel.

Since pronunciations change over time, how does the language deal with that? Do they change the spelling? Or are the Finns just incredibly disciplined in their speech?

Yeah. And it REALLY doesn’t pay to be a smart woman and a godless liberal. When everything stupid is glorified, it’s a ridiculous time to be alive. It’s not even the living in interesting times curse. Stupidity is just stupid. It’s not at all interesting.

Looks like time to go stock up on food again. Oddly, we seem to keep eating up what I buy. I’ll swing by the library while I’m out as well. It looks to be a quiet week here, so I’d best have some reading material.
