My wingnut cousin from WV told me once, referring to black and brown folks, “I live among these people”

So I looked up the town where he lives. 3000 people. 1% Hispanic. So, that’s 30 total in the whole town. Blacks? Less than 1%. I felt like responding, “Oh, so you know him.”

But, you know, guys like him know all about Muslims and blacks and Messicans and MS13 and all that, which people like me who live in the Coastal Bubble - where there are actually Muslims and blacks and Mexicans - simply don’t understand.

Just re-watched “This Is America” again. And it is still intense.

I go back to it every few days, like I did with ‘Lazarus’ after Bowie died.

The song (with video) leaves me feeling different than before I listen, and it does it every time - just like ‘Lazarus still does. When they write the Big Book of Hip-Hop Classics, ‘This Is America’ will be very near the top.

So O’Reilly’s take is that Roseanne being racist shows African-Americans that racism is still alive and the problem is black people may see that racism exists in America? What the fuck is he talking about. This is the most absurd take I’ve seen on the whole event. And I’m fucking sorry, I’ve had it up to here with white people especially white conservatives who can’t acknowledge that racism is a problem in our country. It’s always been.

I mean this is a man who called Hip Hop degrading to women while sexually harassing several women. Self awareness isn’t one of his strong suits. The real damage is white conservatives like Bill acting like we should act like racism towards PoC doesn’t exist and they make it far worse when they claim that whites and conservatives and Christians are persecuted over things that aren’t persecution i.e. Not having CSA memorials, not being able to deny gay people services, and having Muslims have the same right to worship as they do.

Holy cow. There are four states that passed the Equal Rights Amendment and then rescinded it.

Legislators in the following states voted to rescind their earlier ratification of the ERA:[47]

Nebraska (passed March 29, 1972, rescinded March 15, 1973)
Tennessee (passed April 4, 1972, rescinded April 23, 1974)
Idaho (passed March 24, 1972, rescinded February 8, 1977)
Kentucky (passed June 26, 1972, rescinded March 17, 1978)

Holy cow. There are four states that passed the Equal Rights Amendment and then rescinded it.

According to:
equalrightsamendment.org

5 States have voted to rescind it, looks like you are missing South Dakota. But also they point out that past recission votes have not been accepted by Congress so that is probably irrelevant. The 1982 deadline, which may or may not be binding is the bigger issue. I doubt congress as it is currently constituted would accept ratification on those grounds.

What and who are fueling the movement to privatize public education — and why you should care

This is an important article by author Joanne Barkan about the history of the movement to privatize U.S. public schools, which is now at the heart of the national debate about the future of publicly funded education in this country.

We now have an education secretary, Betsy DeVos, who is admittedly doing everything she can to promote alternatives to traditional publicly funded education. Many state legislatures are helping her with programs using taxpayer money to fund private and religious education. Supporters of America’s public education system are concerned about what they say is an assault on the most important civic institution in the country.

In this article, Barkan explains the history and current state of the privatization movement and what may lie ahead for the education system.

This is a long and complex article, with many sources. A summary is difficult.
One clue, though: It starts with desegregation.

The more rural the town, the tendency there is for there to still be “the wrong side of the tracks” or “wrong part of town” (i.e. de facto segregation).

The towns Mrs. FBW and I grew up in, were so small and so rural that we didn’t have anybody nonwhite to segregate. This kind of monocultural isolation leaves you with no counterexamples to any stereotypes you’re taught.

This is how things were back in fish country when I was growing up. I knew a black family in my teenage years. One. I didn’t really associate with “those people” until after I moved to the wild north country and I got to hang out with some of the people Mrs. Fish’s parents had visiting the house; they were well-known as generous and caring folk who would take in down-and-outers and give them a hand. Of course, by then I’d already had my mind somewhat opened to other perspectives, so it didn’t rattle me all that much.

You might remember how a week ago, in a marathon meeting that went until the wee hours, the trustees of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SWBTS) in Fort Worth decided to remove Paige Patterson as president. He was kicked upstairs to the newly-created position of president emeritus, given compensation and a house (being built on campus) for retirement.

Today, he’s OUT. All of it, GONE WITH THE WIND.

Here’s the seminary’s statement: swbts.edu

So what changed between last week and this? Some women publicly came forward and told their stories. And there was an article in the New Republic late this morning which indicated what a horrible shitshow of a place SWBTS under Patterson was for women. I’m just going to quote one woman, but the entire piece is damning as hell. You know the place has to be shit if a Marine thinks it’s awful.

Discrimination didn’t stop at the classroom door. Mary Burbrink, who says she was hired as the seminary’s first female patrol officer in 2013, described rampant discrimination at work. In a seven-page letter mailed to SWBTS trustees ahead of their decision to ease Patterson into retirement, she claimed that her supervisors regularly treated her differently because of her gender. “I remember always being sent away when we would go to calls of a serious nature. … I would arrive and would promptly be sent away by my supervisor once he arrived on scene with another officer,” she wrote.

Burbrink, a former Marine, told me that she’s used to being one of the only women in a group of men. But she said her experiences at SWBTS were unusual. She told me that she wasn’t allowed to be alone with any of her male colleagues, and that supervisors assigned her menial tasks more often than they did the men. She added that her experiences on the job reflected a general campus atmosphere toward women. “I felt like a petty annoyance on my best day, and on my worst day I felt like I was an evil seductress hell-bent on destroying the men around me, just because I was a woman,” she said, a gendered perception she believes the school actively reinforced.

She was particularly disturbed by a 2014 chapel sermon delivered by Patterson, during which he condemned women who dressed like “harlots.” “He was talking to the women,” she recalled. “And he asked us if we dress like harlots, and he said that if we dress like harlots and we cause our brothers and Christ to stumble into sin then, you know, we’re personally responsible for their sin.”

Money cannot buy happiness. Money can buy comfort, but if you aren’t a good person at heart, you will never be truly happy, even if you are comfortable. Many people think that being comfortable in their station will mean they are happy, but a person chasing money will forever be disappointed by someone else who has more.

She MEOWED/HOWLED I think the entire 13 hour event. It was tough for her I’m sure, but the red-eye was guaranteed low temps. over 85 they will not transport.

Put her in carrier (large - plenty of room to move around) she started howling. Howled at the Delta cargo drop off. Super cute cargo guys were saying, hey Chica..(I wrote her name all over the crate) My parent’s picked her up this am & she was still howling.

She’s under their bed. They lost their cat Toonces (get how old that cat was) 3 yrs ago, so they are primed for a new one. haha. But they have a cat tower. It’s going to be a difficult grab when I finally arrive!

Race to June state primaries continues through Glenwood Springs

Mitt Romney’s nephew, Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Robinson, made a campaign stop in Glenwood Springs Wednesday afternoon at The Pullman.

Evolution, creationism, intelligent design: When asked if, as governor, would he support the teachings of creationism or intelligent design in Colorado’s public schools the candidate replied, “I think there’s a place for teaching evolution, teaching creationism, teaching intelligent design. Our kids should know what’s out there, they should be exposed to all of that.” Robinson continued, “Let’s present all the facts to our kids. Let them decide how they feel about it.

The town I grew up in, 20 miles South of Boston, was 100% white. About 75% RCC and 2 Jewish families. When I was in HS the town was so proud to hire a black, female music teacher. Unfortunately, no one in town would rent her an apartment so she had to live in a neighboring town.

And yes, school lunch on Fridays were fish sticks.

Heh—that’s because all of the Jewish peeps moved to the town next door where I grew up. We had two or three black families—one of which was Sam Jones of Celtics fame—they even let him play tennis at the tennis club!

Klein bottle.

A Klein bottle is not something that is found in nature. Like a Mobius strip or an Escher drawing, it is a mathematical curiosity.

Now take a look at a human body. It is basically a torus, a doughnut, with a lot of internal and extended additions well away from from the doughnut, like arms, legs and a big ass brain. There is a hole at one end (your cake hole) and a hole at the end of the tube (your asshole).

Now here’s the thing. On an evolutionary scale, this an ancient, ancient group called Bilateria. They are at least 700 million years old, unless you are a YEC, and developed into worms, insects, fish, reptiles mammals, &c.

I really don’t know where I’m going with this. I just find science interesting. Hell, it’s been my life.

Oh, here’s a thing. Starfish were Bilateria originally but took a radical side-step, probably after a mass extinction event, to evolve into an open environmental niche that was advantageous to a new body form.

More on the SWBTS thing:

Some people seem to have an inkling of an epiphany, e.g. this guy who calls out others like Mohler for virtue signaling:

Yet that tweeter goes right back into his same religious stance.

Also, this blog post is powerfully condemning of the Patersons:

Surviving SWBTS- Life As A Female Employee and Student In A Pattersonian Culture

It’s a good read and sheds light on how much of a power-couple the Pattersons were and how they abused their positions.

Still, the blogger keeps to her religious teaching.

I am pretty sure, quite sure, that the patriarchal abuses demonstrated are fully enabled by the very doctrines that both the above tweeter and blogger still keep.

It is very hard for some to leave their beliefs.

I don’t do Jewish genealogy, but I am impressed by researchers on shows like WDYTYA and FYR, who do indeed find records of Jews in eastern Europe.

Also, if you are AJ, then the DNA tests will be much more challenging for sorting out your cousin matches, due to all the endogamy. I see quite a few posts by those with Jewish ancestry on various genealogy groups, and how hard it is to sort out any match beyond about 2nd cousin.

When my first wife and I moved from NY to Lubbock in 1977, we went to a rental agency that matched tenants with available properties. In those pre-computer days they kept the listings in loose leaf binders. There was a notation at the end of many of the listings, “picky” or “extra picky.” I asked the lady who ran the place what this really meant. She told me, in a confidential tone, that “picky” meant they would not rent to blacks and “extra picky” meant no blacks or Hispanics.

There was a notation at the end of many of the listings, “picky” or “extra picky.” I asked the lady who ran the place what this really meant. She told me, in a confidential tone, that “picky” meant they would not rent to blacks and “extra picky” meant no blacks or Hispanics.

This was already illegal at the time, of course, but they didn’t seem worried. I can only surmise that the lady told me the truth because I was still in the National Guard and my GI haircut would have identified me as “conservative,” and therefore racist, by local standards.

It was illegal, but they had a workaround. Also, any real estate agent who sold a home to a black family in a white neighborhood would be “blackballed” by his colleagues.

I re-watched that MSNBC piece again to see if maybe they had taken the text of the tweet from, perhaps, the closed-captioning, but no: the CC of Avenatti’s answer was accurate (though I found it amusing that they transliterated “buffoon” as “baffoon”: but then, it’s Rudy! we’re talking about….)

But Avenatti is right: this WAS pathetic: I realize Giuliani was blathering off on FOX, where no one is likely to notice or care what bullshit he spouts, but seriously? Some easily-debunked nonsense like “thrown out of court”?

However, I think Mr. Avenatti is missing a point here: the strictly “legal” aspects of Rudy Giuliani’s representation of Donald Trump -lame-ass as they may be - are (IMO) virtually irrelevant: he’s not really “representing” Trump as a lawyer so much as a PR shill. Poorly, half-assedly, and outside of the RW news bubble, counterproductively, AFAICT, but there we are.

Reading through the Wikipedia article, you are correct. People are pushing for states to do this anyway because they’re hoping that, if they cross 2/3, they can get Congress to remove the ratification deadline. They try to point out that the 27th amendment, which was proposed originally by Madison, never had a deadline.

Yeah, some interesting points were raised in that dKos diary. First: yes, the ERA Ratification deadline has long passed; second: several states have rescinded their ratifications; third: the courts are fairly silent on whether or not the states’ Amendment Ratification processes are “Constitutional” or “political” (i.e., if the latter case, subject to Congressional interpretations): so even if that “38th state” ratifies the ERA any time soon, whether or not it would immediately/eventually/ever actually become part of the Constitution seems to be an open question.

Can Eddie Lampert save Sears?

Probably not, say most experts, despite years of maneuvers and machinations to keep the storied retailer afloat. Long a mainstay of the U.S. retail landscape, Sears is still suffering massive losses and declining sales, and many believe its only hope is a bankruptcy filing.

The twist in the tale is that Lampert, the company’s chief executive, main shareholder and a key lender through his hedge fund ESL Investments Inc., is unlikely to lose much money, even as other shareholders are wiped out. That’s because Lampert, again and again, has positioned himself to benefit from the moves required to keep Sears in business while shielding him from potential downside.

The message sent is clear: stay strong, stay loyal, and you will be inoculated from all consequences because Trump IS the law, now and forever.

The message is fucking worthless. D’Souza was convicted and served his time.

Pardoning Dinesh is easy, because no one cares. The reaction would be quite different if Manafort or Flynn’s name was in that pardon.

It’s not even 7AM here in Los Angeles and I’m already pissed off for the day.

Went to the gym to work out before heading to the office and the guy next to me on an elliptical says, “Aren’t you glad we once again have one of our own God Fearing white men as President?”.

I looked at him and said, “I’m Jewish. I have a problem with people like you who support an asshole who says Nazis are ‘good people”“.

He got off of the elliptical and walked out. I come home to grab a cup of coffee before going to work and see Dimwit D’Stupid getting his pardon and the tariff crap…

It’s only Thursday and I’m wondering what’s going to be in the Friday Afternoon Toilet Flush…

If I were you good sir I would go back to bed and restart the show. Sorry you had to deal with the bastard at the gym.

Trump’s signaling to his cronies that he’ll pardon them for breaking the law and undermining the rule of law.

Dinesh pled guilty to crimes. He entered a plea deal.

He was guilty. He will have to allocute to the crime in order to accept the pardon (Burdick).

Not that right wingers give a crap about any of this. They just see one of their bigoted heroes get a clean record thanks to the criminal in chief.

Trump is attacking the rule of law and undermining Democracy every single day he’s been in office.

Oh, and he’s also screwing all American consumers by enacting new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum from Mexico, Canada, and the EU.

That’s on top of the higher costs on imported German cars.

Congrats you MAGAidiots. You’re paying more thanks to Trump’s idiotic and addled worldview. You also have higher gas costs to account for, and that’ll burn through your measly $1.50 a week tax scam break most folks are seeing at the first fillup of your gas tanks.

As is often pointed out, pardons means the receiver accepts as a fact their guilt. Since D’Souza is done with his crime, not only convicted but served sentence, a pardon doesn’t do much, as he’ll still be guilty as guilty goes.

This is all about Trump keeping his remaining marks, the religious right.

It means Dinesh is officially no longer a convicted felon — makes him eligible for various gov’t grants and loans that convicted felons can’t get, jurisdictions that won’t sell guns to convicted felons can’t refuse him on those grounds, and twitter replies will be inaccurate if they continue to respond to him with “convicted felon says what?”

I wonder, at what point, Republicans are going to keep our economy from crashing and burning.

As soon as they’ve covered their short sales of stocks at an adequate profit…

And again - at the risk of sounding like the house “technical analyst” - the DJ 24,000 level (or 23,600) still seems like a semi-solid floor for that index. For now.

The Left and Democrats don’t have a plantation. Republicans have been openly hostile towards Black people and don’t even want us to vote, for goodness sake. As a Black woman, I find it idiotic and insulting when Conservatives accuse people of color of being on a plantation because we choose to vote for Democrats. Republicans have nothing to offer me as a working class, pro-choice, Black woman so I’ll gladly keep voting for Democrats until things change.

We could have had this guy in the Trump admin:

Cramer: Europeans are in ‘over their heads’ on trade because they’ve never seen anything like Trump

European leaders may be scratching their heads because they’ve never seen anyone like President Donald Trump, CNBC’s Jim Cramer said Thursday.

“The Europeans don’t know what to do. I think they’re a little taken by surprise,” said Cramer, referring to the Trump administration’s decision Thursday to impose 25 percent steel and 10 percent aluminum import tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and the European Union, effective at midnight.

“Whatever the Europeans are doing, they are confused because they’ve never seen anything like this president,” Cramer added on “Squawk on the Street.” “They are so over their heads versus this guy.”

Cramer, host of “Mad Money,” said Trump does not like the EU’s trade practices, adding he isn’t “looking for an apology” but looking for an entire “dismantling of the way European companies” have done business.

Reagan and Thatcher were neoliberals? Kinda hard to keep reading that article after she made the neoliberal statement.

They were.

Neoliberalism or neo-liberalism refers primarily to the 20th-century resurgence of 19th-century ideas associated with laissez-faire economic liberalism. Those ideas include economic liberalization policies such as privatization, austerity, deregulation, free trade and reductions in government spending in order to increase the role of the private sector in the economy and society. These market-based ideas and the policies they inspired constitute a paradigm shift away from the post-war Keynesian consensus which lasted from 1945 to 1980.

And to answer Trump…the German car makers close down their plants in Tennessee and South Carolina, and shutter US dealerships for 6 months to send a message. What will all the Trump supporters think then?

Just read up on the “Ban all German luxury cars” bullshit. I can usually tease some semblance of what this lunatic is thinking out of the ether, but this one has me stumped. I have no fucking idea how this benefits the US.

It doesn’t benefit the US: it benefits Donald Trump and his Administration. Mainly in “ratings” and press coverage, but since that’s all this clownshow of an Admin cares about, Mission Accomplished!

“German luxury cars” is nice tidy shorthand even the rubes (i.e. Joe Lunchbucket out in Rustburg, PA) can understand. “Luxury cars” as something they might want, but can’t (and will never be able to) afford: so as to play off their resentment of those (affluent America-hating libruls, mostly) who can. And “German” as shorthand for “Rich Socialist Foreign Freeloading Unfair-Trader” - and because Germans always make good political punching-bags.

Of course, this being Trump he can always reverse his policy on a dime (or Euro) - possibly excepting domestically-produced “German” cars, perhaps, in a token nod to the many billions of dollars German automakers have invested in production facilities over here. But who knows…?

Good point: and plays into what I opined in no. 463 above: it sounds like the Italians are planning to try (as did the Greeks) to deflect most of the blame for their economic/Euro problems onto the Germans. Not completely unjustifiably, mind: but a “crashed” German (or Italian) economy would take most of Europe with it (1931 redux). Not a particularly positive scenario, but look who we’re dealing with.

Dreher drones in:

The Corrupt Architects

[…]

And this gets to the dark heart of what modern Southern Baptists are facing regarding their own origin story, in the Conservative Resurgence.

You may have seen that Paul Pressler has been named in a civil lawsuit as a longtime sexual abuser of a man, who alleges Pressler started molesting him as a teenager, and that Pressler used to pick up boys through youth group activities. Two more accusers have recently gone public, attaching their names to specific accusations. Pressler has denied the allegations. The lawsuit alleges that Paige Patterson and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary knew about the situation and actively covered it up.

If the Pressler allegations are true, then the Southern Baptist Convention has to reckon with the fact that the two chief architects of the Conservative Resurgence are a misogynist and a closeted predatory gay man. [bold in original]

This does not, of course, discredit the ideas behind the Conservative Resurgence, nor does it impugn the integrity of the countless theologically conservative Southern Baptist men and women who worked to bring it about and to defend it. But it does raise painful questions — questions that will have to be confronted. All the theological and moral truths Southern Baptist conservatism stands for are not negated by the monumental personal failures of the most important conservative leaders, but the ability of those teachings to be received authoritatively by the hearts and the minds of Southern Baptist Christians may well be compromised.

[…]

Dreher still loves fundamentalism, he just doesn’t like its flawed proponents.

Sucks about Sears. When we redid the kitchen, we went with Kenmore Elite appliances. Everything’s been rock solid.

When I was in Spain in the Nineties, the Sears catalogue was the “go-to” place to mail order things. Pretty much everyone stationed overseas used the Sears catalogue, because unlike Montgomery Ward and other mail order companies, Sears would ship by the US Postal Service (therefore you could get their products from an FPO/APO).

On this EU steel/German car tariff BS, I’m really not looking forward to that, since I own a German car. That would likely affect car parts as well.

re: #533 BeachDem

You can share mine (if you want to be really old) Elvis “Good Luck Charm.”

You think that’s bad? Mine is ‘Vaya Con Dios’ by Les Paul and Mary Ford (1953).

At least I got a Les Paul tune and not Percy Faith or some such.

Fun fact: ‘Vaya Con Dios’ was number one for almost 3 months.

I honestly think she was wrong to have done that but at the same time, Limbaugh got heroic status long after he called a much younger Chelsea Clinton a dog so I’m not ready to cry for Ivanka and Argentina.

Heh. The #1 song on my 14th birthday was “Somethin’ Stupid” by Frank and Nancy Sinatra. Hey now!

Today is my birthday. The number one song that week was “Cathy’s Clown.” (As it happens, my wife’s nickname in school was Cathy, derived from her middle name.)

I am a living top forty hit. /s

Are you looking at birth year or 14th birthday? If your birth year is 1953 (and looking at when Vaya Con Dios charted) , your 14th birthday hit is “To Sir With Love.”

And it’s more of the “America is the Best Country EVAH!” BS that is (In reality) a thinly veiled attempt at protectionism. The Big Three have been hurting for decades due to foreign imports, including losing pretty much the majority of the luxury market to European companies. So this ban is a two-fer: Show how “pro-American” he is while also trying to give the Big Three an unfair advantage in a market that they have struggled for years to regain.

It’d be more like the “Big Two” - Ford is phasing out production of passenger cars.

Yeah, that was my birth date.

Ah, Lulu. That was a good tune, from a Sidney Portier movie. I can live with that.

You and I have the same birthday, apparently.

Song for MrBWS was Everyday People — Sly & the Family Stone. He said he can live with that.
