My Vasectomy And the GOP Convention

LOL. Sent to veterans (including family) in my E-mail stable.

I’ve run into a few Nurse Rachets in volunteer positions in Navy and VA hospitals.

Unloading on an authoritarian (looking at you Meghan McCain) is precisely the correct response.

Mr. Wright managed to maintain his dignity through all that, and still finds the story funny enough to post in an article (with the hilarious repetition of “Anchors Aweigh”).

Mr. Wright joined the Navy about two years after I did. I once made a post to his blog noting that as an enlisted person myself, his “take no shit” attitude and displayed qualities of leadership were the sorts of things I appreciated in an officer while I was in. I noted to him had I served under him, I would have been willing to storm the gates of Hell in a rowboat.

Of course Fallon regrets it; of course he would know better now.

Since Trump assumed office in January 2017, Fallon’s show has lost more than one-fifth of its audience and been passed in the ratings by Stephen Colbert. Last year, Colbert and the third 11:30 p.m. host of a late-night network show, Jimmy Kimmel, received Emmy nominations for best variety talk series, but Fallon, for the first time in years, did not.

Some late-night have reacted to Trump in ways the audience appreciates, and one didn’t.

Such false equivalencies are the stock-in-trade of those who would criminalise or kill others.

If you equate an abortion with killing a baby, then you are justified (if enough people agree) in killing a person performing one “in defence of another.”

If you equate “protest” with “violence,” then you are justified in ending protests to prevent violence.

A couple of things.

(1)
I was listening to the BBC World Service earlier this evening and one of the topics was the upcoming Mexican election (one week to go, July 1). The reporter pointed out that things have gotten very unpleasant over the last 12 years, since Felipe Calderon came to office and tried to crack down on the cartels. Now the cartels are everywhere, including the tourist locations like Guadalajara and Acapulco, but have also taken up residence in Mexico City itself. I was astonished to hear a discussion that one way forward for the Mexican government might be a “truce” where the cartels do their thing, but stop attacking “civilians.” Yikes.

(2)
I’m completely unimpressed with all the cries of civility coming out of the Washington Post, McCain and others. *Completely.* I’ve been told I was wrong to picket Scientology, wrong to picket churches because of child abuse tolerated and covered up within their walls. But sometimes you have to get into people’s faces to get change going. And I bet NONE of these people have ever had anyone picket their homes (I have) or had the entire neighborhood plastered with signs saying “Religious Bigot” and my ugly mug on them. Did that stop me from picketing? Nope. If anything, it confirmed the rightness of what I was doing. The fact that people are getting bent out of shape about so-called civility not being shown to racists and people who have no problem separating children from parents…well, f*ck ‘em. I’m tired of it.

I’m especially tired by the Post’s tone-deaf statement that pro-lifers have been nice to pro-choice people. That is complete and utter bullshit. Doctors have been assassinated, people have been gunned down in clinic waiting rooms. That’s not nice. Not in the least. That was just so stupid and anti-factual I have to wonder who wrote that drivel.

They don’t care if protesters are quiet. That’s today’s claim, but… football players tried that, didn’t they? They were totally quiet. Dropped to one knee, didn’t make a sound. Then a couple of minutes later stood up again, played the game ticket buyers were there for.

And the right went apeshit over it.

Protesting quietly won’t satisfy them. There is literally no form of protest that won’t upset them. The only possible way to get them to stop whining about it is to not protest. Anything. Ever. By any means.

re: #102 mmmirele

One of the tragedies of the US making drug addiction illegal is that we outsourced our illicit drug production and distribution.

Before WWII, America had drug problems too. Indeed, in some parts of the country doctors had so over-recommended opiates and such that it became a real problem.

This was long, long before the current “opiate crisis” which Trump likes to exploit.

Anyway, the problem with creating (through zealous prohibition) an industry of illegal substances is that the criminality of the industry beckons the worst in society to become party to the activities.

So the US became an importer of billions of dollars of illegal drugs.

It doesn’t surprise me that Mexico as a nation has such a hard time trying to control these now billionaire-cartels. As long as there is that much money to be made, there will be people to do the beckoning of the mob leaders.

The crazies were limited to their mimeographed newsletters and occasional local meetings back then. If there was a national organization (John Birch Society, for ex), they might have been able to read a monthly newsletter, but the communication was one-way only. Now, they have the Internet to stay in constant contact to reinforce their cockeyed world views, and with the right wing media amplifying that craziness 24/7, it’s even worse.

The second tweet was from some numnutz who said that Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen are into “spirit cooking” and are pedophiles (you know that whole Pizzagate thing). That’s the kind of bullshit out there.

I was a child and teenager in the 1960s and 1970s, but I’m not old enough to remember. Was it just as divided then, or is it worse now?

MM, as somebody who lived through the 60s there was a lot of unrest over Civil Rights. Before the 1964 law was passed there were plenty of places in my hometown that were segregated or “restricted”. There was a lot of white backlash against Dr. King and it was gladly incubated by the Birchers.

People forget that George Wallace initially ran for President against LBJ in 1964 and he got a high percentage of the vote in Maryland, Wisconsin and Indiana. He also got a lot of write-in votes in Pennsylvania’s non-binding preference primary. I remember the day after the primary. Mom was the judge of elections in our precinct and she was FURIOUS about all the Wallace write-ins.

But for me the major shift appeared in the churches. Back in the early 60s most churches were welcoming and open places. Now there were a couple Birch Churches but they were marginalized. But starting in the 70s, the Hunt Brothers put up the seed money for Falwell’s Moral Majority and they also underwrote Pat Robertson’s 700 Club. Anita Bryant was groomed to be the leader of the gay haters and she hit her stride in Florida when gay civil rights ordinances were repealed. All of a sudden churches that used to say God Loves You flipped to God Hates Gays and Lesbians. More and more churches became Bircher Churches. You saw Catholics abandoning the Democratic Party over the race issue plus abortion. It was encouraged by Billy Graham Cracker and his Pulpit Pimping Pals.

Now they were using the “dog whistles” of busing, affirmative action and intolerance to peel the Reagan Democrats out of the Democratic Party and it showed as you saw George Wallace winning Democratic primaries in 1972.

But now you don’t have the dog whistles anymore. Racism is now out in the open and Trump plays that shit with every tweet.

It was as badly divided, but without the Internet to amplify it.

The Sixties had anti-Vietnam protests, and the right claiming the left was commies or anti-American. The Sixties also had the Civil Rights Movement, with the attendant murders by conservatives of those standing up for their own rights (or those standing up for the rights of others), and conservatives claiming civil rights activists were commies or anti-American. Various cities burned in race riots.

The Seventies had of course the Nixon scandals and more anti-Vietnam War protests, and the right claiming the left was commies or anti-American.

Like most of the other respondents, I ‘d say it was at least as divided, but social media amplifies it. Oh, and the Soviets weren’t able to have the effect they’re having now because Cold War time. Contrarians and custard-heads said they were our friends, but most people didn’t buy it.

George Romney paid the price for standing up for Civil Rights and saying that he had been lied to about Vietnam.

It’s a shame his son has absolutely NONE of his integrity, decency or morality.

George Romney was a good man; but he was a Republican in an era where having decent values was not incompatible with being a Republican. His son certainly abandoned any values he may have had when he ran in 2012; he is not the man his father was. In the age of Trump, he has shown himself to be the same coward or traitor (except perhaps McCain) that every other Washington Republican has proved themselves to be.

la plus ça change…

This physical explanation of the source of change, like Anaxagoras’s analysis of the nature of the sun, seemed to deny the validity of the entire superstructure of traditional religion, which explained events as the outcome of divine forces. Many people feared that the teachings of the sophists and philosophers could offend the gods and therefore erode the divine favor that they believed Athens to enjoy. Just like a murderer, a teacher spouting doctrines offensive to the gods could bring pollution and therefore divine punishment on the whole community. So deeply felt was this anxiety that Pericles’ friendship with Protagoras, Anaxagoras, and other controversial intellectuals gave his rivals a weapon to use against him when political tensions came to a head in the 430s B.c. as a result of the threat of war with Sparta. Pericles’ opponents criticized him as sympathetic to dangerous new ideas

It was divided, but over actual real-life measurable things. Did you support or oppose civil rights and desegregation, did you support or oppose the Vietnam War, did you support or oppose long hair or pot-smoking or rock music or premarital sex, or… any number of things that actually existed in the measurable physical world.

People on both sides of every issue lived in the real world.

It was different. But we had assassinations of a President, his brother, and a great Civil Rights Leader. There were riots in the streets, tens of thousands of Americans were dying in a meaningless war in VietNam, 4 students were murdered by the National Guard in Kent State, Ohio, civil rights workers were murdered in Mississippi, and many feared a nuclear conflagration. Of course, we didn’t then elect George Wallace as President nor was our president treasonous trash who praises dictators. But the country survived those times and we will survive this too. Politics can turn on a dime, and just because we appear to be in the darkest of times, doesn’t mean that we won’t emerge stronger from having learned the worst about ourselves and our neighbors.

Well (pun intended), I’m back.

The well is not leaking. My wife and I spent an hour or so running and inspecting the well and chlorine pump. Nada.

Discovered the water in the shop is from the roof leaking (apparently damaged by the tornado last month). Roof repair is not in my job description.

Went over to the chairwoman’s house at midnight to inform her of what’s up, as she will need to get a roof inspector over.

Terrorism cell linked to crimes in Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana (Goes to the Southern Policy Law Center)

New federal charges shed light on a cell of suspected domestic terrorists known as the “White Rabbits” who allegedly were involved in assorted crimes, including firearms violations and fire-bombings of an Islamic Center and a women’s health clinic.

Additionally, the suspects have been linked by federal investigators to robbing Walmart stores and drug dealers to fund their campaign of domestic terrorism, bombing Canadian National railroad tracks and extortion of the railway company.

Michael Hari, 47, Michael McWhorter, 29 and Joe Morris, 22, all of Clarence, Illinois, were named in a superseding indictment returned Thursday in Minnesota, charging them with federal civil rights and hate crime violations related to an explosion at the Dar al-Farooq Islamic Center (DAF) in Bloomington, Minnesota, on August 5, 2017.

The three men, along with Ellis Mack, 18, also of Clarence, Illinois, were arrested on March 13 and currently are in custody in Urbana, Illinois, on federal charges of illegally possessing a machine gun and conspiracy to interfere with commerce by threats and violence. Hari is also charged with possession of a firearm by a felon.

While the combination of Trump’s narcissism with latent bigotry in America is inherently bad in itself, one of the side effects is that we in the US have been in large part drawn in Trump’s narcissism by spending our time trying to combat it.

And that means a lot of things around this world are going on without much of a notice at all by us here in the US.

Among those things is what is happening in Yemen:

Fighting moves closer to centre of Yemen’s main port city

Yemen’s Houthis deployed additional forces in the main port city of Hodeidah on Sunday as a Saudi-led military coalition moved closer to the city centre in the largest offensive of the war, raising U.N. fears of a humanitarian catastrophe.

The alliance led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates launched its assault on the heavily defended Red Sea city on June 12 to try to weaken the Iran-aligned Houthi movement by cutting off a key supply line for the group, which controls the capital Sanaa and most populated areas.

[…]

I guess for many of us in America, those people over there are, well, over there, and whatever happens to them is no concern to us (even though we are involved.)

However, over in the peninsula which for Trump only exists as a stage on which to parade his outsized ego, there is this:

S. Korean island begins refugee process for Yemeni asylum seekers

South Korea’s resort island of Jeju started on Monday refugee status reviews for Yemeni asylum seekers fleeing from civil war.

Jeju Office of Immigration chief Kim Do-gyun said a total of 486 Yemeni asylum seekers have applied for refugee status and the office will be reviewing two to three per day, Yonhap reported.

[…]

While albeit small in number of refugees, still, here is a country with not a lot of land, with a world-hot-button border, who nevertheless are aware of the problem and willing to help.

I realize there are not many news briefings anymore coming from the WH, but whenever the next one occurs, I wonder if any media rep there will inquire how many refugees the US is planning on taking?

And their own. What little could even remotely be considered the left wing of the Nazi party, the Strasserites, were eliminated during the night of the long knives as well as the leadership strata of the Sturmabteilung.

I know it’s popular to compare Trump and his Trumpers to Nazis, and even Godwin has weighed in on this matter, but I want to go back to what I was trying to communicate back in 2016.

That is, comparing Trump to the literal Nazi party is not the best way to think of what is going on. The term I was trying to propagate is fascistic.

Trump and his followers exhibit a form of a fascistic social movement.

Why did/does Trump have the followers that we see?

In my way of thinking, there are three fundamental elements coming into play here:
1) the loss of independence;
2) the loss-of-God problem;
3) the cultural differences of the other.

Here and in many forums, number 3) is being emphasized but I think for the US that is not the most important (which is why I put it third.)

My contention before is that Trumpism is much more similar to Italian fascism and also the Brazilian fascist movement, than to Nazi Germany.

Trump does what he does for reasons. He is not some giant random number generator.

The reason before and after the election that Trump spends so much time on trade, now on tariffs and trade wars, is because of the first issue I listed above.

Globalization of “the economy” has meant that Americans can lose their jobs very easily, or, end up working for a foreign corporation with an operation here in the US. In either case, globalization in combination with automation has meant that job security is lost for a great many American workers.

Yes, our own domestic policies of favoring the rich over the poor contributes to this, but underlying even that is the truth that a rich person can move around their wealth from nation to nation (see Trump’s friends, for example.)

The second big problem, which Trump loves to acknowledge through all this shoulder-rubbing with fundamentalists, is the loss-of-God problem.

Religion has been very important in American history. Americans on the whole are among the most religious people in the “first world”.

Modernity has ceaselessly attacked the idea of “God” in general, and in particular the specific God-of-the-Book of fundamentalist Christianity.

To lose their job security (through globalization) and eternal security (through loss of God) has made many Americans easy to manipulate by expert hucksters.

And Trump is, if anything, and maybe only this, an expert huckster.

No, it’s not Trumpism that’s fascistic. It’s about any form of (R) these days. Trumpism may or may not be ‘merely’ fascistic, but blaming fascism on Trump is letting a whole lot of psychos off the hook. The difference is “strongman-controlled’ vs ‘committee-controlled’, not ‘totalitarian vs free’. Especially with the vast majority of Rs who had emailed through the RNC being totally compromised by the Putinists.

It’s consistently amazing how this civility trap only gets applied one way. It’s almost like it’s fucking disingenuous or something. And yet the media is more fucking shocked about Sarah Sanders being refused service for who she is (you know, rather than WHAT she is, like a certain store owner refusing to serve customers solely because they’re gay, rather than anything personal about them) than any of the abuse, eliminationist rhetoric, etc. that comes from Trump literally daily.

Meanwhile, we still have a crisis where our administration seems set on laying the foundation of purging all the brown people from the country through any means necessary.

Agreeing with Jennifer Rubin and not Soledad O’Brien:

Listen, I get it. The notion of shunning or excluding or heckling can devolve into philosophical hair-splitting as to whether someone has engaged in normal public service or whether they’ve strayed outside the bounds of decent behavior. Each to his own method of expressing disdain and fury, I suppose.

Nevertheless, it is not altogether a bad thing to show those who think they’re exempt from personal responsibility that their actions bring scorn, exclusion and rejection. If you don’t want to provoke wrath, don’t continue to work for someone whose cruel and inhumane treatment of others rivals the internment of U.S. citizens and noncitizens of Japanese descent during World War II. And yes, I’d have hollered at then-California Attorney General Earl Warren, who pushed for the roundup of people of Japanese ancestry, even American citizens.

According to a 1991 Associated Press report, Kathleen and Thomas Purgatorio, then in their sixties, ate the “salmonella-tainted mousse” at a restaurant called Buffet by the Sea in Trump’s Castle Hotel and Casino on Oct. 16, 1989. Kathleen felt sick afterwards, Purgatorio-Howard recalls, but nowhere near as ill as her father who she told The Daily Beast “went from walking into the hospital to being in intensive care on a ventilator in a coma.”

A Las Vegas Strip restaurant bearing the initials of celebrity financier Donald Trump was briefly shut down after health inspectors found violations including month-old caviar and expired yogurt.

Donald Trump usually loves to be in the headlines - but his latest moment in the spotlight is less positive than he might like.

The outspoken tycoon’s Las Vegas restaurant was shut down by health inspectors this week after racking up dozens of violations.

The insanitary conditions at the upscale eatery included meat and fish that was weeks old, as well as racks of cooked food kept at dangerous temperatures.

The Dow Jones industrial average has fallen by 160 points, or 0.65%, to 24,420.

Technology shares are dropping, following reports that the Trump administration will block Chinese companies from investing in the US, and also restrict US tech exports to China.

Alphabet (Google’s parent company) is down by 1.7%, semiconductor maker nVidia is down 2.1% and aircraft maker Boeing is down 2%.

Harley Davidson is also dropping, down 2% after outlining its response to Europe’s new tariffs on US goods.

We don’t yet know how many US jobs will be affected by Harley-Davidson’s decision to move some production from America to Europe. But it’s possible that the company’s base in Milwaukee, Wisconsin could be hit badly.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

Trump’s busy giving yelp reviews to restaurants and ragging on Jimmy Fallon.

Yeah, can’t wait for Mueller to eventually give his yelp review on Trumpworld. It’ll take more than 280 characters to fully encompass the criminality Trump surrounded himself with before, during, and after the campaign.

Reminder: Two of Trump’s campaign managers were indicted - Gates and Manafort. One entered a plea deal. The other was thrown in jail for violating bail by engaging in witness tampering and intimidating witnesses. Manafort faces 100s of years in prison if convicted on all the charges. Manafort was the guy who got Trump to the RNC and selected Pence as Trump’s VP.

Manafort was also instrumental in the June 2016 meeting with the Russians, along with Kushner, Junior, and each has lied about his involvement every step of the way.

Trump’s foreign/military policy guru, Mike Flynn, entered a plea deal. Flynn was Trump’s NSA.

All they are showing is how the population have been programmed to respond to magic words.

Over and over again, by simply changing the words of a question which otherwise have the same denotation, responses will vary by word choice.

These surveys exist for only one reason: to generate heat (to get eyes on articles/broadcasts.)

Real economic data comes from the departments of Commerce and Treasury, and from the Fed.

The civil protests/shunning of administration officials weakens their certainty that the majority of Americans side with them. Sure, they know that liberal pundits and Democratic politicians are against child separation, but Real America (which to their minds is most of America—look at the red on the map!) wants the border secure, and are willing to tolerate some family torture to get it.

When they go to eat or shop somewhere outside the urban hellholes, and are still driven out, then they have to rethink their assumptions. And learn to cook.

And that is real torture. What is the point of having money and power if you can’t flaunt it in front of the less fortunate?

The first two decades of the 20th century saw the end of the great colonial empires of Europe; the average British of French citizen from 1900-10 wouldn’t have believed you if you had described to him what Britain, France, and the world, would be like in the 1930s, 1950s, etc.

I think it is clear that the same thing is occurring now with respect to the American “empire” which is collapsing as we live through it, and I doubt we can even imagine what the geopolitical situation will be like in, say, 2050.

And our collapse is due to the fact that we haven’t played the typical Empire - we don’t require other countries to pay for our military nor are they required to treat us as first among equals (that doesn’t mean countries don’t for obvious reasons) - and Trump has been trying to change the arrangement to an extortion racket.

I agree. 30 years from now will look different. The US was not going to remain at the top anyway, in my opinion. What Trump, though, is doing is damaging the ability for Democratic nations to respond to the growing Chinese influence. What should have become a European-American-Pacific Rim alliance is now fractured. We might be able to fix it after he’s gone, but it will be weaker against China than it should have been.

Intraday movements of this magnitude are usually pretty meaningless. I was there when the market dropped 22.6% in one day, courtesy of a new computerized trading algorithm portfolio insurance . 1.4% is nothing. Of course in 1987 the market recovered its losses by the end of the year. I wouldn’t pay any attention to such a modest drop.

OK: not to want to appear like Technical Market Guy again, but even at the current trading level, the equity markets haven’t even dropped to the last “trough” level of March’s major dip - though should they, things might get really dicey.
While the US economy is still, all things considered, reasonably strong (or at least “not weak”), moves on what Bloomberg calls the “Fear Gauge” are starting to sink in: mainly apprehensions about Trump’s trade-war insanity, and the realization that the low interest rates which have eased economic tensions for years are going to have to start creeping up sooner or later.
As of right now, the DJIA is heading towards the 24,000 level (down 442, 1.8%)if it busts through that, then WTFO……

Once again, the GOP gets away with gerrymandering districts. Minority rights are at stake, and Gorsuch gets to put his thumbs on the scales to depress minority representation. He, along with the rest of the conservatives on the Court are intent on killing the VRA (what remains of it after Roberts eviscerated the enforcement provision).

Congress, while in GOP hands, refuses to lift a finger to restore the VRA and put new considerations in place to pass muster, and gives the bigot GOP the right to continue skewing the makeup of Congress and localities’ districts.

This is bad stuff.

The problem is that it doesn’t seem to matter much if we don’t fall for it. The most important folks far as November goes, that squishy middle and/or no-shows from ‘16 and the media we rely on to actually hold Trump accountable, seem to believe it whole heartedly, the former mostly because the latter has become so complicit in normalizing Trump and persisting in treating anyone against him in the most delegitimizing of ways. There seems to be no criticism of him that can’t be shut down for the news cycle without the incessant tone policing. The kind that rewards perfectly bad faith from the GOP and punishes good faith from the Dems over and over again. There is seemingly no way to break through when they persist in ‘both sides same thing’ at best.

on civility:

“the democrats” should be nice to us as we fuck them left and right, fuck up the system - health care, immigration, the cabinet, foreign police etc., lie to their faces and in general ignore them

Be nice to us say the people who hang out with pastors who call LGBT people demonic.

482
dangerman  Jun 25, 2018 • 11:39:08am

around the ‘net people are asking “where’s obama” in all this

- aside from the ex-president’s code
- aside from anything he would do or say would turn the discussion onto him (see samantha bee and the c-word)

consider this:

when trump finally is an ex-president (for whatever reason), you think he will do the ex-president’s code thing? not for a second.

and further - if he doesnt actually serve two terms (again for whatever reason) do dont doubt that he will constantly hint and ‘threaten’ that he’s gonna run again

Because Dem outrage and anger is inherently invalid to them. Black outrage and anger is inherently invalid to them. And Black Dem outrage with a double-dash of Misogyny? That’s even more doubleplusinvalid to the point it needs to be smashed down immediately.

President Obama was in my neck of the woods.
adirondackdailyenterprise.com

SARANAC LAKE — Former President Barack Obama visited the local area for some fly fishing Thursday and Friday.

His guide was Vince Wilcox of Wiley’s Flies, who has a fly fishing shop, guide service and motel in Ray Brook. Wilcox posted about the experience on Instagram and talked to the Times Union of Albany. The Enterprise could not reach Wilcox.

Wilcox told the Albany paper Obama had only fly fished once before, in 2009 in Montana.

“Apparently, when you are the president, you don’t have a lot of time,” Wilcox said. “But he did great. He’s a natural athlete.”

Wilcox posted that Obama caught “a couple brookies.” The guide wouldn’t tell the TU how many fish the former president caught or where, but he said Obama released all the brook trout except one, because he wanted to know what it tasted like.

Remember, black flies don’t bite, they suck.

If a hateful person makes you hate, they win. If a bully makes you bully, they win. If a vulgar person makes you vulgar, they win. Let us meet hate with love. Let us meet bullying with an embrace. Let us meet vulgarity with civility. This is how our country and world win.

I have a question for Dowd.

How did Donald Trump win*?

Was Hillary and her backers hateful, vulgar bullies?

*The Presidency.

All the pearl clutching about civility in the age of Trump is full of hypocrisy.

That said…I don’t believe some of these tactics are effective. That is my problem with the “go after Trumpers in public” strategy and the nasty twitter shit postings.

To win in Nov, we will need centrist democrats, independents and disillusioned Republicans who have come to see Democrats as the only sane party. I want to win dammit. I don’t want to give them weapons to use to a) boost the R turnout and b) suppress our own.

And while it may not be fair, it is true; Maxine Waters will be a big story today and not just on Fox.

Separately, as for SHS…that was a privately owned restaurant that acted on their own, not the result of public demonstrations. Totally acceptable. But of course they will use it as a case of liberal intolerance.

Needs to continue.

At same time, GOP approval of Trump remains at or above 80%. They are completely impervious to facts and logic at this point, and they are quite content with the white nationalist policies Trump’s exhorting. They’re fine with the fascist policies Trump’s leaning towards. They’re fine with abrogating the rule of law.

They’re fine with an authoritarian in Trump. They’re fine being in a cult.
