Hugh Hewitt claims Trump just forgot to fly flag at half staff for McCain: ‘It’s an egregious oversight’ rawstory.com

“He forgot?”

I could buy forget, there are a lot of little niggling things in protocol that someone could forget. That’s why the White House has a Protocol Officer, who keeps the President informed on the correct protocol for every situation.

So either:

a) The Protocol Officer is incompetent (not likely)
b) The President overruled the Protocol Officer (Trump’s a jerk)

Hewitt’s pathetic apologia for Trump is pathetic.

I honestly cannot remember a president who acted so petty and passive-aggressive. Even at his worst Dubya would never have stooped to this level, and that was a man who lied the country into a war that lead to the deaths and permanent disability of millions.

Trump is incapable of honoring John McCain, because Trump has no honor. He can only shame himself; he is a national disgrace.

I’d argue that the Chief of Protocol in Trumpworld IS incompetent and overriden so many times, he’s got tread marks from the bus. The WH Social Secretary is likewise incompetent.

When Trumpworld makes so many unforced errors about so much in protocol (addressing specific leaders in certain ways, issuing statements, etc.) it’s systemic and they just don’t give a shit despite being all about the image.

Their image is shit.

Yet would it really surprise anybody at this point if that were the excuse they went with? “Oh, we thought that the proclamation was just a formality, that the flags automatically went down and came back up after the internment”? Again blaming some flunky for not having spoken up and pointed out to his boss that the Flag Code requires an official proclamation or else the flags go back up the next day?

As previously noted, the flag was still at half staff on the Washington Monument this morning, until it was actively raised. It had to be a direct order once its status was noticed.

While not wanting to pile on to the McCain Hagiography that is currently in progress, the symbolism surrounding the flag and the Senator’s passing is simply yet another example of a petty response from a petty man who is obviously unfit for the elected position he has.

Anyone on the right, should be able to see this for what it really is and those that don’t are obviously so far up their own asshole in the cultism that is conservative politics that they would deny that water is wet if Trump said that it was so.

They’ll find a way to gloss all over it by throwing all the blame on some underling. Claim the order to raise the flag came not from the Oval Office, but from some guy who didn’t know what he was doing and so has been “disciplined” for his error. But now the flags are done, so why can’t the media just move on to something “important” like praising Donny’s prowess as a “dealmaker.”

“I had this conversation with the protocol officer. And then I get to the cabinet meeting, people were freaking out about this flag deal, and I was like ‘What’s the big deal?’, and so I checked the transcript of my conversation with the officer, and realized I forgot to include the word ‘not’—so I meant to say ‘Do NOT raise the flag until Sen. McCain is buried.”

One of my friends on FB was praising McCain, and said he’d have been “an amazing President”.

I didn’t comment, because it would have been inappropriate, but seriously - he would not. He had no clue what to do in the financial crisis and generally didn’t much care about domestic politics. He was too inclined to war, and too much of a hothead. And he thought Sarah Palin should be VP.

He was much better as a Senator. President was not in his wheelhouse.

Correct. He even admitted that economics wasn’t something he understood that well when he ran and his delegation not just Palin showed poor leadership skills to me. He wouldn’t have made a good President but I wouldn’t have been ashamed to call him mine either like I am with Trump.

Well because the killer wasn’t a brown person of course. The NRA proves time and time again that they’re a despicable racist organization with no values at all except hate. The experience was … not what you’d expect. Taco Bell would thumb its nose at this interpretation of Sonoran cuisine.

The fire involved 3 propane cylinders (300 pounds in total) - that had it detonated, would have caused major damage.

The situation is now secure as FDNY fireboats responded and put water on the fire and crews were ferried over to assist in securing the scene.

Older MAGA-heads will grit their teeth, then bow their heads and mumble something about the Supreme Court, as yet another piece of their soul leaves their body.

EVERY Trump voter made the same Faustian bargain. Wealthy, ‘fiscally conservative moderates’ sacrificed their reputations and dignity. they traded social justice, the planet, their daughter’s rights, international relations, safe gun policy, the health care of millions and much more for their own tax cut. The struggling, white middle class traded it all for a fictional job promise.” they all debased themselves and their country to maintain control of the Supreme Court.

Oh, I’m sure that like most things, they see this totally in business terms. That a deal made quickly is the mark of an awesome dealmaker because he was able to get past all the major obstacles quickly and land on a deal that both sides were satisfied with. That it’s a negative sign if a deal takes a while to reach because one side or the other has been worked into “giving away” something they wouldn’t have if a deal had been reached quicker and thus is the mark of a poor dealmaker.

re: #27 Blind Frog Belly White

One of my friends on FB was praising McCain, and said he’d have been “an amazing President”.

I didn’t comment, because it would have been inappropriate, but seriously - he would not. He had no clue what to do in the financial crisis and generally didn’t much care about domestic politics. He was too inclined to war, and too much of a hothead. And he thought Sarah Palin should be VP.

He was much better as a Senator. President was not in his wheelhouse.

Had the same thing happen to me. He’d have started a war with Iran within his first year in office, and there’s enough evidence he had every bit of the anger/temper issues Trump has.

Also, McCain would have most likely screwed up the economy further with tax cuts and trickle down economics. I just walked away from the post.

I’m already sick of this re-writing of McCain’s history. He voted for Trump, most likely, and voted for Trump policies 80% of the time. This “He was an awesome Senator” bullshit is already grating on my nerves. I don’t think I can make it until Sunday without calling out someone for their maverick worship.

The “statement from the President” (no proclamation up yet though he’s claiming he signed one) is now up on the White House Website.

whitehouse.gov

Despite our differences on policy and politics, I respect Senator John McCain’s service to our country and, in his honor, have signed a proclamation to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff until the day of his interment.

I have asked Vice President Mike Pence to offer an address at the ceremony honoring Senator McCain at the United States Capitol this Friday.

At the request of the McCain family, I have also authorized military transportation of Senator McCain’s remains from Arizona to Washington, D.C., military pallbearers and band support, and a horse and caisson transport during the service at the United States Naval Academy.

Finally, I have asked General John Kelly, Secretary James Mattis, and Ambassador John Bolton to represent my Administration at his services.

Call for violence: Angry pastor says public schools that teach about gender identity should be burned to the ground because they violate God’s law.

Pastor Kevin Swanson, a man with a reputation for promoting Christian hate against the LGBT community, is once again calling for violence, this time against public schools.

Right Wing Watch reports:

On his radio program today, extremist anti-LGBTQ pastor Kevin Swanson and his co-host Bill Jack declared that “sexualized public schools that violate God’s law with high levels of flagrancy” should be burned to the ground.

Swanson and his co-host are angry because the newly released Washington state health and physical education standards include such topics as HIV prevention, sexual orientation and gender identity.

If “the gays” are so freakin’ powerful, why aren’t they ruling the world?

Two years ago, Anne Graham (daughter of Billy Graham) said 9/11 was God’s punishment for trans people.

First Baptist Church of Dallas pastor Robert Jeffries called it a false flag attack by the government in 2015.

In 2007, the Evangelical magazine Christianity Today (the largest circulation Christian magazine) proclaimed Jerry Falwell was right in an article.

Oh no doubt but the Roberson one got the most publicity.

Thieves replace Paraguay police rifles with toy replicas

During an inspection, officers found that the FN FAL battle rifles had been replaced with wooden and plastic replicas.

The inspection had been ordered after the rifles started appearing a year ago on the black market, where they can fetch up to $10,000 (£7,785).

The rifles had been put into storage but were still in working order.

Some of them are thought to have ended up in Argentina while others are believed to have been smuggled to Brazil.

Now that Trump has begrudgingly signed a proclamation to lower the flag, my state governor and Trump whisperer Pete Ricketts has just issued a statement lowering the flag in Nebraska.

governor.nebraska.gov

LINCOLN - Today, Governor Pete Ricketts announced that all U.S. and Nebraska flags are to be flown at half-staff in honor of U.S. Senator John McCain, who passed away at the age of 81.

Earlier, Governor Ricketts issued a statement following Senator McCain’s passing:

“Our country has lost a great patriot who dedicated his life to serving our country in our military and then in the U.S. Senate. Our prayers and condolences are with the McCain family.”

Flags will be flown at half-staff until sunset on his day of interment.

OH SHIT Pope Francis Covered Up Cardinal’s … Consensual Adult Gay Stuff? Oh. (Wonkette, more at the link).

Here are the basics, according to the letter published Saturday by former Papal Nuncio to the US Carlo Maria Viganò (a nuncio is like an ambassador, but all Churchy): Pope Francis and his predecessor, Pope Benedict, knew that Cardinal Theodore McCarrick [archdiocese of Washington DC] had been accused of having “shared his bed with seminarians,” as Viganò puts it so quaintly, for years. They were all adults, but like any sexual harassment, an archbishop summoning students to his beach house is hardly a consensual relationship. Last summer, when allegations surfaced that McCarrick had also abused two minors, Francis accepted his resignation as a Cardinal and suspended him from pastoral duties while his case is investigated by the Church (the statute of limitations on McCarrick’s alleged abuse of minors has passed, so no criminal charges).

Viganò accused the Vatican of covering up for McCarrick’s abuse of adult seminarians for too long, and says Benedict (he’s a big fan of Benedict) justly stripped him of clerical authority, sentencing him to a life of “penance and prayer” in 2009 or 2010, but then Francis tried to rehabilitate him by allowing him to lecture and go to conferences. Viganò also hints this was a reward for McCarrick’s help in getting Francis elected pope. The letter doesn’t suggest Francis had any knowledge of the allegations involving minors.

McCain was like him or not a fixture in our national politics for a very long time and he did see public service as a calling and did what he could to encourage American students on the subject. I never would have voted for him in any of his campaigns due to ideological disagreements and I think his leadership skills lacked in key areas- see Palin, Sarah but I do think he was a man who loved this country and wanted what was best for it.

But as critical as I am of McCain in life and death, I fully support Senator Schumer’s proposal to rename the Russell building after him. McCain was like him or not a fixture in our national politics for a very long time and he did see public service as a calling and did what he could to encourage American students on the subject. I never would have voted for him in any of his campaigns due to ideological disagreements and I think his leadership skills lacked in key areas- see Palin, Sarah but I do think he was a man who loved this country and wanted what was best for it.

specific decisions or positions aside

mccain was of the dying breed - a politician who recognizes that there are two legitimate parties and that, for the most part, the goal is concensus democracy.

the association the first couple of years is tough, and automatic. it does sort of fade

like if something bad happens on christmas or whatever

my dad died on my mom’s birthday
the first few years were very difficult
18 years later, the urgency, the immediacy and sort of obvious connection is gone
we dont forget to remember. nor does she. it’s just a bit softer now

You’re right about that. I didn’t really mean it would be a bad thing that Senator McCain and Aunt Connie will always be linked. It’s just one of those random happenstances that happen in this world. As they leave the world, others enter and 75-80 years from now when both you and I are gone, they too will be remembered both internationally and to their loved ones. Death takes us all, rich/poor, famous/anonymous, left/right, etc. I don’t know what’s after this life which is why I try to enjoy this life the best I can.

Taylor is (ugh) my Congresscritter, so I’m not really surprised to read this. Nor do I expect it will do anything but shave a couple points off the poll for maybe a week.

How brazen are VA Republicans in their cheating? This brazen:

That split would benefit Taylor, who, though a campaign spokesperson has said he was aware of his staffers collecting signatures for Brown, has professed ignorance of any unlawful behavior. A special prosecutor is looking into potential criminal violations.

NPR has a story about who exactly was Russell

npr.org

Sure he had a big part in getting New Deal passed, but also:

Russell was a staunch segregationist, and he used his same mastery of the Senate rules to block civil rights legislation, even keeping an anti-lynching statute from becoming law.

He fought integration in the nation’s military and at federal government agencies. In 1956, Russell was a co-author of the “Southern Manifesto,” which opposed desegregation of public places, and he led the Southern bloc of senators who opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, calling it “shortsighted and disastrous.”

Russell even went so far as proposing legislation that would encourage African-Americans to move out of the South.

Highly likely that’s a name Mueller has in his notes.

I am so sick of hearing Trump’s voice in the Martha McSally ad. I’ll be happy when tomorrow is over.

Which may have caused a problem for Manafort.

I believe that’s limited mostly to one party. The Democrats still value compromise, as long as it’s not capitulation.

Going to vote in the morning for the first time. I usually always go in the evening but I’ve got a swimming date with my nephew.

He’s endorsing her and not Sheriff Joe? Where is the loyalty?//

Loyalty is a one way street with Donny as Roy Moore found out.

Poor Maggie. She writes an article implying that Bruce Ohr is getting attacked because he has been a fierce opponent of Putin’s kleptocrats and suddenly she’s getting attacked from the right instead of the left: “Maggie is a left-wing dupe covering up for Hillary!” I’ll admit that I’ve had some harsh things to say, but I think she really does walk a tightrope.

I didn’t know that about her. Doesn’t surprise me since she just seems to hate liberals and lacks any real principles.

I think it’s a measure of how far the Republican Party has fallen, and how much we have normalized its excesses, that a guy with McCain ‘s disturbingly mixed record is praiseworthy and even heroic by comparison.

Charlie Pierce can sure write an obit. I thought his Menino and Garner pieces were superb, and his McCain remembrance is really something. Personal admiration but no sycophancy.

During the primaries here, I not only suffered ads, but got robocalls with Foghorn Leghorn (Henry McMaster) teaming with Trump. I laughed as they spent their money and then proudly voted in the Democratic primary.

Thieves replace Paraguay police rifles with toy replicas

Am I a bad person for wishing I could get my hands on one of those rifles? I always have liked it better than any other military rifle.

re: #1 Anymouse 🌹

From the previous thread:

“He forgot?”

I could buy forget, there are a lot of little niggling things in protocol that someone could forget. That’s why the White House has a Protocol Officer, who keeps the President informed on the correct protocol for every situation.

So either:

a) The Protocol Officer is incompetent (not likely)
b) The President overruled the Protocol Officer (Trump’s a jerk)

Hewitt’s pathetic apologia for Trump is pathetic.

Soon after Trump took office, among the first 30 or so WH personnel to be dismissed, there was a middle-aged black female who had served under 3 or 4 previous presidents. Cannot recall her name or duties, but I *think* she specialized in WH protocols/formalities —including catering to official visitors’ needs, such as food and beverage choices/offerings consistent with various cultures.
