Trump Is Embarrassed Into Visiting a War Zone for the First Time

Clearly embarrassed by the numerous media outlets pointing out that he hasn’t visited US troops in a war zone in the two years since he was elected, Donald Trump and trophy wife number 3 made a hasty belated Christmas junket to Al Asad Air Base in Iraq today.

(Aside: have you ever noticed that when Trump smiles it always looks like he’s gloating about putting something over on somebody?)

Oddly enough, the visit also coincides with the New York Times’ publication of their investigation into how Trump dodged the draft during the Vietnam War with a phony diagnosis of “bone spurs.”

Sure would have been nice if the Times had decided to do this investigation a bit sooner; say, about two and a half years ago.

A few days before Christmas a giant tumbleweed nearly the size of my car blew up on the lawn of the village hall. A woman across the street thought it would be funny to decorate it, so she staked it down to the lawn, then a bunch of people hung decorations from it (garlands, ornaments, &c).

Interesting count. (I was looking for First Ladies who’d visited combat zones but didn’t find any.)

I did find a list of visits from Franklin Delano Roosevelt through Obama in 2014, a list of forty-three visits at Military dot com.

In that list for Republicans, Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, and GHW Bush each visited once. GW Bush made eight visits. Ford made no visits.

Obama made seven, FDR and Bill Clinton made three each, LBJ made two.

He did mention it to his advisors back in November. It does take time to set this sort of thing up, and if someone was actually on the ball in the maladministration, they wouldn’t mention it until it was happening. (Lots of things can go wrong to scrub such a visit.)

All the time I was in the Navy we never had a politician show up anywhere I was stationed. The highest ranked military person (aside from when I was in boot camp) was COMFAIRMED when I was stationed in Rota, and everyone was required to turn out unless they were on watch or in the hospital.

If you assume 325m people in the US, and African Americans make up about 13%, that’s about 42.25m black people in the US. According to a recent YouGov poll, 2% of black people strongly support Trump, and another 5% somewhat support him. Let’s go with 7% of 42.25m, that’s still almost three million black Americans who support Trump to some degree.

In the meantime, when the opportunity crosses my path, I remind pro-lifers that abortions occurred before Roe and would still happen after Roe.

I’m not a lawyer so I can’t say, though making an argument on right to privacy and due process seems reasonable to me.

7-2 seems pretty clear.

Moreover, in the past, states would oppose women seeking a safe abortion by dragging it into court. The idea was since pregnancy only lasts so long, by the time it got to court the case was moot.

Roe was argued as a class action case, the first time that was ever allowed.

Call me cynical, but I don’t think that will ever happen. The “reward good behavior” approach might work with a 7-year old, maybe even with a teenager. But Trump’s 72 years old, and he’s been rewarded for bad behavior his entire life. He’s not changing now.

In the meantime, when the opportunity crosses my path, I remind pro-lifers that abortions occurred before Roe and would still happen after Roe.

I think the Ninth Amendment argument is the best, and is critical to all of the cases that developed under the right to privacy. The Bill of Rights was not an exhaustive list of rights, and recognizing other fundamental rights has always been a job for the Courts (nobody wants their rights defined by legislative majorities). The problem, ultimately with the decision in Roe was this:

We, therefore, conclude that the right of personal privacy includes the abortion decision, but that this right is not unqualified and must be considered against important state interests in regulation.

That has always been a backdoor into undermining the right to privacy.

The other problem is that Griswold was very mealymouthed in recognizing the right to privacy rather than just basing it clearly on the Ninth Amendment.

I’ll also admit, even within the world of constitutional law scholars, the Ninth Amendment argument doesn’t get a lot of support. But it really does seem like the best way to address these sorts of issues.

I did find a list of visits from Franklin Delano Roosevelt through Obama in 2014, a list of forty-three visits at Military dot com.

In that list for Republicans, Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, and GHW Bush each visited once. GW Bush made eight visits. Ford made no visits.

Obama made seven, FDR and Bill Clinton made three each, LBJ made two.

And because that evac was so rushed we didn’t bring the people we’d promised to bring, we didn’t even have enough time to shred the files full of their names and addresses and photos and they ended up desperately putting to sea… Ford did go to Capitol Hill to beg (and it did require begging; nobody was cooperating easily) for refugee visas to let the boat people come here. Because we owed them.

Oh, don’t worry, I remind them frequently that the world they want is one where abortion is dangerous and underground, and point out that this is not caring for women. But it’s not about saving the babies, because they can’t give me an answer as to why they believe life begins at conception, when half of those fertilized eggs then go on to fail to implant. It’s all about controlling women.

(For the record, the dynamics would definitely change this time around, in between the availability of pharmaceutical abortions and women today taking up the mantle of the Jane Collective and performing menstrual extractions and early abortions outside the purview of doctors. But in general, it would still be dangerous because of the vindictive nature of pro-lifers.)

My unfortunate prediction (as mentioned in an earlier post of mine): He has seen the light on what is needed to get approval; he may be a sociopath but he has been successful at commanding attention and deceiving millions. He will now behave himself in public and limit his tweets. His backroom deals with tyrants will remain backroom; he will continue to sell us out but will do it behind the scenes and will behave appropriately in public. Jesse Ventura was more surprised than anyone when he got elected governor in MN.

I had just started working for the state when he got elected and the reaction of the long-timers at work the next morning was a riot. Jesse actually did try to take the job seriously for a while. He visited our office one morning and was genuinely humble and respectful. After about two years he got sick of the job and turned belligerent. Things were so screwed up after 3 years (with Tim Pawlenty as the House leader) that people in my office were laid off by the bus full. I was one of them.

He was still better than Pawlenty. At least no bridges fell down.

Flying off the topic a minute, to discuss YouTube advert alogrithms.

I do not have a YouTube account, so I get mostly random adverts (except those based specifically on Missouri, I presume pulled from my ISP’s location).

I was watching a video in which the word “corn” appears several times, though the topic of the video was not about corn.

I got four adverts for corn seed suppliers or farm equipment suppliers (selling grain drills).
