Trump Is Embarrassed Into Visiting a War Zone for the First Time

Politics • Views: 32,282

Clearly embarrassed by the numerous media outlets pointing out that he hasn’t visited US troops in a war zone in the two years since he was elected, Donald Trump and trophy wife number 3 made a hasty belated Christmas junket to Al Asad Air Base in Iraq today.

(Aside: have you ever noticed that when Trump smiles it always looks like he’s gloating about putting something over on somebody?)

Oddly enough, the visit also coincides with the New York Times’ publication of their investigation into how Trump dodged the draft during the Vietnam War with a phony diagnosis of “bone spurs.”

Sure would have been nice if the Times had decided to do this investigation a bit sooner; say, about two and a half years ago.

A few days before Christmas a giant tumbleweed nearly the size of my car blew up on the lawn of the village hall. A woman across the street thought it would be funny to decorate it, so she staked it down to the lawn, then a bunch of people hung decorations from it (garlands, ornaments, &c).

They did it on the down low because they were shamed into doing it - not because of security concerns.

Interesting count. (I was looking for First Ladies who’d visited combat zones but didn’t find any.)

I did find a list of visits from Franklin Delano Roosevelt through Obama in 2014, a list of forty-three visits at Military dot com.

military.com

In that list for Republicans, Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, and GHW Bush each visited once. GW Bush made eight visits. Ford made no visits.

Obama made seven, FDR and Bill Clinton made three each, LBJ made two.

I guarantee you all, it’s a lead-pipe cinch that every soldier in that photo op was there only after asking if they supported Trump, and answering in the affirmative.

And I think it’s about time to do a comparison of that tiny claque of administration-approved enlisted personnel with the absolute mob scenes that they showed Obama.

I do like their snark.

Twitter Gun Lady Shoots Up Innocent Wood Board For Wishing Her ‘Happy Holidays’ (Wonkette, more at the link):

Kaitlin Bennett, the former Kent State student famous for trying to be famous by posing all sexily with a gun down her pants all the time, has a special Holiday Christmas message for all of us heathens out here, but most especially for one particularly secular large wooden board.

Technically, it was self-defense. Bennett had been minding her own business in an empty lot, all alone on Christmas, holding an assault rifle, when this wooden board had the audacity to wish her Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas. Mostly because she had made a large sign that said “Happy Holidays” and then taped it to said board, but still. Was she about to stand there and take that? Was she going to be disrespected like that, and by an inanimate object of all things? No, she was not.

“Where’s Kaitlin?” someone in her family surely wondered as they gathered round for their Christmas feast. “Out back, shooting angrily at a wooden board what wronged her,” someone else probably replied. “Again?” asked another.

If you assume 325m people in the US, and African Americans make up about 13%, that’s about 42.25m black people in the US. According to a recent YouGov poll, 2% of black people strongly support Trump, and another 5% somewhat support him. Let’s go with 7% of 42.25m, that’s still almost three million black Americans who support Trump to some degree.

Given what’s happened with Roe, it was probably wrongly decided (and that’s a hard thing to admit, because me and a whole undergrad class argued with a prof on Roe in 1983). I’d challenge abortion restrictions on First Amendment grounds today and I’m not the only one to think this. I’m not a lawyer so I can’t say, though making an argument on right to privacy and due process seems reasonable to me.

7-2 seems pretty clear.

Moreover, in the past, states would oppose women seeking a safe abortion by dragging it into court. The idea was since pregnancy only lasts so long, by the time it got to court the case was moot.

Roe was argued as a class action case, the first time that was ever allowed.

The theory may be that if he is praised for doing what’s right, he might be persuaded to continue doing what’s right. He doesn’t know the difference between good and evil but he does know the difference between laudatory words and condemnations. It’s not that I want good behavior to lead him into reelection; it’s that if he does what’s right, it will benefit the nation.

Call me cynical, but I don’t think that will ever happen. The “reward good behavior” approach might work with a 7-year old, maybe even with a teenager. But Trump’s 72 years old, and he’s been rewarded for bad behavior his entire life. He’s not changing now.

Given what’s happened with Roe, it was probably wrongly decided (and that’s a hard thing to admit, because me and a whole undergrad class argued with a prof on Roe in 1983). I’d challenge abortion restrictions on First Amendment grounds today and I’m not the only one to think this. I believe there are female members of The Satanic Temple challenging abortion laws on similar grounds as a violation of their religious belief that they should control their own bodies.

In the meantime, when the opportunity crosses my path, I remind pro-lifers that abortions occurred before Roe and would still happen after Roe.

I think the Ninth Amendment argument is the best, and is critical to all of the cases that developed under the right to privacy. The Bill of Rights was not an exhaustive list of rights, and recognizing other fundamental rights has always been a job for the Courts (nobody wants their rights defined by legislative majorities). The problem, ultimately with the decision in Roe was this:

We, therefore, conclude that the right of personal privacy includes the abortion decision, but that this right is not unqualified and must be considered against important state interests in regulation.

That has always been a backdoor into undermining the right to privacy.

The other problem is that Griswold was very mealymouthed in recognizing the right to privacy rather than just basing it clearly on the Ninth Amendment.

I’ll also admit, even within the world of constitutional law scholars, the Ninth Amendment argument doesn’t get a lot of support. But it really does seem like the best way to address these sorts of issues.

Obama made seven, FDR and Bill Clinton made three each, LBJ made two.

military.com (written in July 2016)

Ford gets a pass; the only combat zone during his time was the one we were doing a rushed evacuation from.

And because that evac was so rushed we didn’t bring the people we’d promised to bring, we didn’t even have enough time to shred the files full of their names and addresses and photos and they ended up desperately putting to sea… Ford did go to Capitol Hill to beg (and it did require begging; nobody was cooperating easily) for refugee visas to let the boat people come here. Because we owed them.

There are a number of ways you can argue it.

Since conservatives equal foetus to baby, the XIII Amendment argument could be countered with a cruel and unusual punishment argument. (If someone enslaves another, the penalty is not death.)

Body autonomy works for me. No one is required to give up their body, even after they die, to keep another alive.

If the government can tell a woman she can’t have an abortion (or for that matter must have an abortion), they’re telling her she has no right to control her own bodily functions—IOW, that her body doesn’t belong to her. Any person whose own body does not belong to them is a slave—in this case a slave of the State. The 13th Amendment prohibits slavery.

Wow, my regional newspaper published a conservative columnist going after Trump. They usually only publish praise for Pumpkin Pinochet. What happened? Was there a revolt at the office?

(There is also a column by Cal Thomas noting that good can only come from God, though. A variant on “atheists can’t be good.”)

KATHLEEN PARKER: The Grinch has lost his mind (Goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald, more at the link):

‘Tis not the season to be jolly, thanks to Donald Trump.

His sudden, unilateral decision to withdraw troops from Syria, forcing the resignation of Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis — one of the last bulwarks against the president’s impulsivity — has cast a pall on the holidays and, perhaps, the future.

In his letter of resignation, Mattis said the president deserves a defense secretary who is “better aligned” with his worldview. This alone is a terrifying thought — what madman (or woman) would fit that description? There can’t be many generals left who would want the task of taking orders from a commander-in-chief who developed his military strategy playing Monopoly.

CAL THOMAS: No peace or goodwill

The true meaning of Christmas is this: God took on the form of a human to die in our place, paying for our sins, so that humans who receive Him might be forgiven and be with Him forever.

You are free to reject that message and the One who delivered it, but what you are not free to do is to redefine or change the message into something that fits your own beliefs and choices.

Wrong, Cal. I am free to define Christmas and its meaning however I like. You are not free to impose your meaning on me.

FWIW, your highest expected return from one of the big lotteries will likely happen this coming weekend, if no one wins the PowerBall tonight.

Once the jackpot numbers get past the middle 300’s, the likelihood that more than one ticket will win the jackpot starts to rise noticeably.

Not a lot of jackpots have crossed the $400M mark. The last big one that had a single winner was the South Carolina MegaMillions winner in October, but that person has yet to come forward and claim the pot (and they are now down to 4 months to do so.)

If gambling is your vice, and you’re not going to do pari-mutuel type of stuff (some horse racing) or a private poker table, then your best bet, as all the experts will tell you, is playing blackjack.

If all you can do is count the face cards, then, if you sit in the seat which is dealt last, you can do ok as long as your disciplined on when to stand (depends on game rules, but 16 or 17.)

If you’re lucky you can win a pile of money, if not you’ll probably not lose much.

Other games are much worse odds. Lotteries tend to be the worst odds except for expensive scratchers where the odds are like one in ten of winning something.

True — but it was illegal and people could be prosecuted. That’s the world the pro-lifers want to re-impose: making abortion dangerous and increasing harm to the women who have one.

Oh, don’t worry, I remind them frequently that the world they want is one where abortion is dangerous and underground, and point out that this is not caring for women. But it’s not about saving the babies, because they can’t give me an answer as to why they believe life begins at conception, when half of those fertilized eggs then go on to fail to implant. It’s all about controlling women.

(For the record, the dynamics would definitely change this time around, in between the availability of pharmaceutical abortions and women today taking up the mantle of the Jane Collective and performing menstrual extractions and early abortions outside the purview of doctors. But in general, it would still be dangerous because of the vindictive nature of pro-lifers.)

My unfortunate prediction (as mentioned in an earlier post of mine): He has seen the light on what is needed to get approval; he may be a sociopath but he has been successful at commanding attention and deceiving millions. He will now behave himself in public and limit his tweets. His backroom deals with tyrants will remain backroom; he will continue to sell us out but will do it behind the scenes and will behave appropriately in public. And the GOP will breathe a sigh of relief and continue on their merry way in rolling back all progress in the last century.

I have to respectfully disagree, every time we’ve seen Trump seem to “get it,” that lasted right up until he grew overconfident (which he always does), which leads to him dropping back into habit because it’s what he is most familiar with. My prediction is that he will fall back into form as soon as next week, when the new House Dem majority is seated and he starts trying to show how “tough” he is compared to Nancy.

Mrs Obama was looking after the service spouses left at home - a much more sane option. trump is rather like Sarah Palin - has to take someone to cover him - so he doesn’t get booed by crowds who are polite to wives and children.

Hillary Clinton also went to Bosnia. That said, her claim she landed under sniper fire was false, and the right wing made hash about it.

Obama made seven, FDR and Bill Clinton made three each, LBJ made two.

military.com (written in July 2016)

Eisenhower surely gets a pass - he lived in a combat zone.

I hope that both of you are right — and that Trump will implode, but remember he reached age 70 without ever being held to account for any of his amoral or illegal actions. It was the election that changed the narrative for him and exposed him to legal jeopardy; but he may finally have learned what is needed to get the approval he so craves. He knows how to defer to tyrants — he may now understand how to get approval from a wider audience. Ivanka and Jared have likely been advising him on how to change his tone.

Trump got this far because he lived in a closed environment which favored his sort of stupidity. But when moved out of that environment, he quickly collapses into a puddle of mush because he can’t withstand the pressures.

Jesse Ventura was more surprised than anyone when he got elected governor in MN.

I had just started working for the state when he got elected and the reaction of the long-timers at work the next morning was a riot. Jesse actually did try to take the job seriously for a while. He visited our office one morning and was genuinely humble and respectful. After about two years he got sick of the job and turned belligerent. Things were so screwed up after 3 years (with Tim Pawlenty as the House leader) that people in my office were laid off by the bus full. I was one of them.

“…Recently, Quartz reported the Secret Service could spend more than $90,000 this winter on Florida golf cart rentals to shadow the president while he hits the links, bringing the agency’s total golf cart rental expenses to approximately $400,000 since Trump took office—an apparent modern record.”

Can’t put the toothpaste back in that tube.

Trump fucked up opsec for the Navy SEALs. Trump wanted his photo op and got it. He didn’t give a shit that he’d be undermining US national security along the way, or make the job of our SEALs even harder or expose them to the possibility of reprisals because they were revealed for all to see.

This is ALL on him- no one else. Trump let loose that fuckup. This is a FUBAR/VFUS situation. And it’s all on Trump and his idiot handlers who planned this out in “advance” as his advisers want people to think (they didn’t).

NIELSEN: PARENTS TO BLAME FOR MIGRANT KID DEATHS (goes to Huffington Post, caution for autoplay video, more at the link)

Comparing parents and children fleeing violence to “smugglers and human traffickers.”

I really would like to see her referred for prosecution.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen is headed to the U.S.-Mexico border later this week in response to the Christmas Eve death of an 8-year-old Guatemalan boy who was in the custody of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

In a statement Wednesday, Nielsen called Felipe Gómez Alonzo death “deeply concerning” and partially blamed the influx of immigrant children detained at the border on those who oppose the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

“Our system has been pushed to a breaking point by those who seek open borders,” Nielsen said. “Smugglers, traffickers, and their own parents put these minors at risk by embarking on the dangerous and arduous journey north.”

He’s visiting troops in two countries, which means now he can go to Florida instead of back to DC. It’s only fair.

Flying off the topic a minute, to discuss YouTube advert alogrithms.

I do not have a YouTube account, so I get mostly random adverts (except those based specifically on Missouri, I presume pulled from my ISP’s location).

I was watching a video in which the word “corn” appears several times, though the topic of the video was not about corn.

I got four adverts for corn seed suppliers or farm equipment suppliers (selling grain drills).
