My exercise regime has been… non-existent… for a while (need to get my shit together and start working out again). But after high school and a year of JC water polo, I basically took the approach of “I exercise so I can eat more”. I’ve never been particularly good at serious dieting, I’ve made some decent runs here and there, but eventually I want cokes and breakfast burritos more than I want 12% body fat.

re: #49 Nyet

On the subject of the Shoa, here’s a distressing bit of news.

One in 20 British adults do not believe the Holocaust happened, and 8% say that the scale of the genocide has been exaggerated, according to a poll marking Holocaust Memorial Day.

Almost half of those questioned said they did not know how many Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, and one in five grossly underestimated the number, saying that fewer than two million were killed. At least six million Jews died.

The poll, commissioned by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, a charity established and funded by the UK government to promote and support the international day of remembrance, echoes the findings of a survey carried out in seven European countries in November.

That poll found that one in three people knew little or nothing about the Holocaust, and an average of 5% said they had never heard of it. In France, 20% of those aged 18-34 said they had never heard of the Holocaust; in Austria, the figure was 12%. A survey in the US last year found that 9% of millennials said they had not heard, or did not think they had heard, of the Holocaust.

The scale of ignorance about the Holocaust has shocked experts. Olivia Marks-Woldman, of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, said: “I must stress that I don’t think [the poll respondents] are active Holocaust deniers - people who deliberately propagate and disseminate vile distortions. But their ignorance means they are susceptible to myths and distortions.” The Holocaust is taught in schools as part of the history curriculum, but “that might only be one lesson”, she added. “And people who are middle-aged or over may never have been taught about it.”

We’ve gone from “Never forget” to “The what? Never heard of it”.

Still have a hard time thinking they’re not just a sophomore prank. But there are probably some shared dynamics, like discounting evidence.

In high school I read a history of science that identified an important break at the point where the sciences ran past easily seen demonstrations and “went on instruments”. At that moment the popular appreciation of science began to demand increasing trust in non-obvious methodology.

Alex Jones takes you closer to that kind of abstract CT positioning. It seems the conspiracy is for conspiracy’s sake, content-immaterial, or content driven by the woo marketplace. Contrarianism in a pure dose might also be a driver. I used to think, around George Lincoln Rockwell’s day, that the need to be despised by the mainstream was bringing a lot of his cosplay stormtroopers to show Nazi trappings. Don’t know if that shows up in the motives of any Holocaust denialists.

It was very easy to see in Rockwell’s day, before all the WWII dead were even buried. Signing up with the neo-Nazis looked like a perverse craving to be a pariah. It’s bad that they are rapidly losing that status.

Good on them. I hope they make it big.

Wish for what he says in his blog to be read at every church service sometime in the next few weeks.

But it won’t happen. Sure, there might be a pastor or two, but the mainstream pulpit pimps will never acknowledge this truth. It would hurt the bottom line. And the bottom line is way more an important religion than any ol’ Christianity.

Good morning, Lizards!

This crap brought something ,to my mind that I have been wondering about for a while. To me, I would think a major theme in the Democratic political pitches to both the Dem base and Independents would/should be a single-minded harping on (what I see) as Donald Trump’s most blatant and obvious failing. His credibility - or more precisely, his utter lack of it. On a level unheard-of in a POTUS in our history. I mean, LBJ destroyed his after years of bullshitting about Vietnam, but Trump hasn’t been able to cite an accurate figure or back up a claim since he became President. And NO ONE (especially the media) ever seems to seriously call him on it. At least not when it comes to political issue. During the recent Wall Shutdown, I kept waiting for someone - anyone - to simply get up (on the floor of Congress, say), and demand that Trump provide some sort of verifiable backup for his overblown, hysterical claims about “illegals” and “crime” and “trafficking” or whatever. And exactly WHY his idiot Wall would help. Etc. Simply get up and say “Donald Trump says [whatever]: given his record of lying, why should we believe him?”
I mean, we here do, and realize (at least AFAICT) that Trump’s. Presidency is mostly/mainly Bluster Theater for the rubes, and “not intended to be a factual statement”, but really? Shouldn’t this be more of a foundation for the Opposition?

re: #156 Jay C

I agree they don’t do it enough when it’s specific.
Otoh, sometimes it’s best not to accept the premise in the first place

I went to the church one Sunday as the final part of the gift to my parents for their 50th anniversary. i dont think that can be what he’s referencing
there has to be some absorbed cost of labor and by using ‘illegals’ it’s actually lower than it otherwise would be

with full employment it cant be that theyre taking all those jobs from ‘americans’ who would earn, pay taxes etc. and with that higher cost of labor, then the cost of products goes up and in some perverse way so do profits so corporations pay more taxes (yeah right) and the economy is now booming from all this otherwise lost gdp… this is too convoluted an argument for anyone in teh current WH to even think up

re: #106 Dr Lizardo

Wonder what that would look like, LOL. Maybe like the opening credits, about 20 seconds of something innocuous (such as the “Logjammin” bit from The Big Lebowski) and then cut to the end credits or something.

On the DVD release of BATMAN XXX, the porno parody of the sixties Adam West BATMAN series released around a decade back, there’s an edit included as an extra that does cut away with a scene transition just as the sex scenes are beginning. IIRC, the non-explicit cut runs around 25 or 26 minutes, while the full version runs two hours.

Yes, I have seen it. Yes, I do own it. Yes, I did find it amusing in places, especially that their Joker, a veteran performer who has been around since the eighties at least and who normally worked racially clean-shaven, actually grew a mustache just so they could replicate Cesar Romero’s mustache “hidden” by white facepaint make-up.

When Mueller finally releases his findings, one of the major defenses against it is that it is tainted and partisan and therefore to be dismissed outright.

Then they will go after anything they can present as an inconsistency or procedural error so they can again dismiss it outright.

I had my usual Sunday call from my 95 year old uncle this morning. A sweeter man never lived, and he is pretty frail now. But he was watching the St Louis Fox station, and was disturbed by all the violent people coming over the border, and how we needed a wall. I spent some time talking to him gently about it, and just by doing some questioning got him to wonder a bit about what they were telling him. There oughta be a law against that sort of thing: elder abuse, scaring old folks out of their drawers like that.

Depressing. At least he is too sweet a person to be obstreperous about it.

So, last evening as I was feeding the animals, noticed “my” deer herd strolling across the field. I didn’t do anything sudden, as I didn’t want them to start running across the nearby road. About 20 in this bunch. (Sorry on quality; post-sunset phone photo at a distance.)

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. So Trump’s tweeting bulkshit stats that aren’t supported by reality - but have so much precision that you have to wonder just how they got the numbers - of illegals here, etc.

They figure that if you’re going to lie, you should do it with precision.

Same with the claims that Texas found thousands on thousands of people who shouldn’t have cast votes.

Here’s the thing. Trump set up a voter fraud commission with Kris Kobach (Mr KKK). They spent months trying to find voter fraud and couldn’t find a single example. In fact, Kobach’s expert witness countered Kobach’s claims. That voter fraud effort failed, but we know that voter suppression and election fraud are real things.

There was an article on Steve King’s district today in the WaPo and the cognitive dissonance of these people just pisses me off. The whole “Oh, this is only part of who he is.” You can have an advocate for farmers and even socially conservative values that isn’t a raging right wing bigot like King is and there’s a lot “Well diversity doesn’t matter too much here.” Yet at the same time you buy fearmongreling about immigrants and PoC.

In other words they could buy the base model car, but they do in fact want the deluxe model. The hate is the leather seats and the 5.0 liter engine. Comfortable and faster.

I have always lived in large cities or liberal enclaves, but I have read that such places exist in “Real America”.

When I moved to Kentucky every new conversation was “where are you from” followed by “yankee something” followed by “which church do you go to”. To ward off any invitation I said the (sole) Lutheran church in the county.

I could never become a member any church that recites the Nicene Creed in any form as I don’t believe in its tenets.

We could do the Athanasian Creed instead… < whistles innocently >

I don’t mind the Nicene. The creed is about finding away to express the inexpressable while pissing off as few people as possible. Hence a bunch of convoluted expressions (bad as they are in english, the original greek is horrific) trying to explain what is, at best a mystery - the nature of god. When they stopped thinking of Jesus as a person and instead as a divinity, that’s when it got messy. Like everything put in place to keep the Empire happy, it’s not really important. They went out of their way to find language that sounded specific to him but yet could be agreed to by the Arians.

The incarnation and how we are supposed to live with one another? Now that’s actually important, not the creeds.

Took a quick peek at Fox this morning. Nunes was on Maria Bartiromo’s show saying that the Mueller investigation is too tainted to continue, that someone at AG needs to do his job and investigate the Clintons, [click]. But it was good for a chuckle. He seems really scared.

Jezus - I’m surprised that dickhead Nunes even dared to be seen on TV. He ought to be scared: when Adam Schiff and his pals on the House Intelligence Committee finally overcome GOP shenanigans and get the Committee going, they’re likely to be releasing a ton of (previously buried) shit that’s going to cast old Devin in a pretty poor* light. And blathering about “partisanship in investigations” is going to be ringing fairly hollow when the HPSCI starts showing off what Nunes covered to up to protect Trump from the Russia probes….

When I was an undergrad at Pitt in the mid 70s, those assholes got money from the Hunt Brothers to reserve every possible room in the University to push their right wing shit. Nobody could meet in any room for anything. We couldn’t even have chess, bridge or go tournaments. Oh and when the YM/WHA wanted one room for one hour to tell students about what services they provided they were challenged by those religious assholes.

Got to the point fed up students would shout the Jesusbots down at their meetings.

The best part was when Jerry Falwell and his KKKristian KKKwyer showed up to push the product. At the same time WDVE was broadcasting a Frank Zappa concert. a bunch of students brought their battery powered radios to Jerry’s gig and drowned him out with Frank’s Yellow Snow tour.

re: #259 Barefoot Grin

My wife does elder care. It’s unbelievable how many of her clients watch Fox.

I’m pretty sure that if you crunched all the numbers, Fox’s dominance is propped up heavily by demos 65 and over. The average age for a Bill O viewer hovered in the low-mid 70s.

At the same time, the demos for talk radio are just as bad. The majority of them now broker their airtime on the weekends to financial analysts and colon cleansing infomercials because the weekday programming isn’t sustainable financially.

The difference between Fox and talk radio is that Fox can sustain itself by forcing cable providers to carry it at large fees, which the cable companies pass down to us, the subscribers.

So Ailes hit that sweet spot of having Fox appeal primarily to Olds, and they make money off of the rest of us. It’ll work until Fox’s audience literally dies off and/or enough cord cutting puts cable companies in the a position where they cannot afford to continue carrying it.

i think we’re saying the same thing differently

the sub s would still exist. the business expense deductions would be at the corporate level, just as they are now.

the net income (k-1) that flows to the individual (after all deductions expenses, owner salaries, etc) that net income could be taxed at the new marginal rate

all she’s proposing (as i understand it ) is a change to the individual marginal rate. so the sub s k-1 would read exactly the same either way - the same net income passed through

Exactly. So a business owner sub chapter as can choose to raise wages and invest in plant and equipment rather than paying 70% tax on that top marginal amount. That is good in my view but there will be a huge industry in creating new tax shelters that shield income but aren’t productive Investment. Those must be fought.

He’s always been on the fringe. The big issue this time is they got cocky and decided to help Trump and went all in on whatever that took.

Almost makes you wonder if some of them knew how much Trump was attached to the Russians. They may have been all in but didn’t know that Trump was as dirty as he appears to be.

Maybe the Big Don Con conned them all.

If so, the knives have to come out soon.

McCarthy blamed the delay on the Democrats. He blamed the shutdown on the Democrats. He blames no immigration policy on the Democrats. Any problems in government…Democrats!

And then he said America is sick of all the partisanship and wants both parties to work together.

I wouldn’t buy a car off Kevin McCarthy. One look and I would know he is screwing me.

So, he is the GOP replacement for Paul Ryan. A downgrade from a downgrade. Sure makes it clearer why Boehner got the hell out of there.

We need the Democrats to kick some House ass over the next two years to set up for many years after that.

There is a certain sense in which Trump has to “deliver on his promises”. For decades the Republican party has been propagating fear and hatred among their followers. “Vote for me and I’ll get rid of the (insert your hated group here)”. Except they were only lying, and never intended to deliver. And so after thirty years of Limbaugh et al, the mob formed behind “Mr. Tell It Like It Is” because by god he was going to hurt all the people they fear and hate. And now, when they face the prospect that they have been duped yet again, well it is understandable how much they would resist that fact. The Republican party has created a cancer in this country through their propaganda and lies.

I made it home, pulled out the most important things from my luggage (specifically, my many medications), went upstairs and collapsed into bed. My cat was worried about me; she lay next to me and purred and purred and purred for hours. Now that I’m up, she’s wandered off to sleep somewhere else. (It probably helped that I fed her tuna fish for being such a good kitty.)

all of this is from electoral-vote.com yesterday. and they conclude

The thing about dominance politics is it only really works towards one end: Establishing that you are the one with the power and can do as you like. And the biggest part of that in what is currently going on is Donny does not simply want to get his funding, he wants a fait accompli from Nancy. He wants it made clear that, in the grand scheme of things, he is the head honcho and Congress answers to him. And an national emergency declaration doesn’t get him that, because it would be him going over Congress to get the money. Nancy would remain unbowed, Congress would remain defiant, and he’d still be stuck screaming on Twitter as his demands went nowhere with the House.

So he’ll keep threatening to use that declaration, threatening to override Congress to get what he wants. But he won’t go through with it because he doesn’t just want the money, he wants Nancy to bend a knee to him. And so long as he fails to get that, he can’t feel as though his dominance is established.

Are these the same super-delegates that the Bros rested their hopes of an upset at the convention, figuring if they could convince enough SDs that Bernie could win and Hillary couldn’t, they would overcome her delegate count and install him as the nominee?

Those super-delegates?

Honestly, Pelosi should say tomorrow that if the GOP is going to enter into these negotiations with a view that Trump will get his money one way or another, then he’s wasting the nation’s time and dwindling patience. And that the Congressional GOP need to make clear that they will support whatever “deal” is made even if the White House threatens a veto.

Yep, cut that bullying bullshit right off. Make America very aware of it and make Trump feel the wrath of everyone for three more weeks.

Meanwhile, press on the Senators that are teetering and force Mitch’s hand too. Tell all of Congress no deals on a wall at this time unless we have full immigration reform pounded out. Security included, but no more screwing around.

I think you give trump WAAAY tooi credit for thinking. About anything. Ever.

That is not working is why he’s going to do it.

His simple-mindedness prevents him from going through with it, however. He’s had chance after chance after chance during this mess to execute the declaration … with cameras focused on him. One time during a primetime address in which everyone expected him to declare an emergency, and he didn’t.

That he doesn’t follow through with it is an awfully big tell.

re: #375 Targetpractice

I change it as I say it and leave parts out. I told my priest once, who said, “Skip it if you want. God doesn’t give a shit.”

I would leave out the “under god” line from the pledge when I was forced to say it. Mostly when I was at the Knights of Columbus with dad for some doings. Those people were big on a prayer and then pledge before we would get to eat.

Well put. It’s come out that this whole wall thing was just a way to keep Trump on track. But he has internalized “build the wall.” In addition to him just wanting to get his own way to assert his power, “build the wall” also plays into how he thinks of himself as a builder instead of a brander. “Build the wall” feeds into Trump’s ego on so many different levels. Not getting his wall will be an enormous blow to his ego, and that will be delightful.

His supporters/enablers are worse than even he is.

The one saving grace is that the current crop of candidates** is stronger, deeper and haven’t been subjected to the decades of demonization Hillary had to endure through the far right. She was unfortunately weakened and Bernie exploited that weakness. A lot of his unbearableness came through sheer luck in 2016, luck he won’t see this time around.

To be blunt, I’m more worried about Jill Stein doing more Russian ratfuckery next year, assuming that the SCO hasn’t zeroed on her sorry ass before then. The receipts against her are obvious and out in the goddam open.
