My exercise regime has been… non-existent… for a while (need to get my shit together and start working out again). But after high school and a year of JC water polo, I basically took the approach of “I exercise so I can eat more”. I’ve never been particularly good at serious dieting, I’ve made some decent runs here and there, but eventually I want cokes and breakfast burritos more than I want 12% body fat.

I’ve done multi-day fasts before. The first 36 hours or so are the toughest. After that the hunger goes away and the mind becomes strangely focused. There is some preliminary evidence for health benefits of fasting, but yeah, there’s no need to brag about it to your millions of followers.

Still have a hard time thinking they’re not just a sophomore prank. But there are probably some shared dynamics, like discounting evidence.

In high school I read a history of science that identified an important break at the point where the sciences ran past easily seen demonstrations and “went on instruments”. At that moment the popular appreciation of science began to demand increasing trust in non-obvious methodology.

This crap brought something ,to my mind that I have been wondering about for a while. To me, I would think a major theme in the Democratic political pitches to both the Dem base and Independents would/should be a single-minded harping on (what I see) as Donald Trump’s most blatant and obvious failing. His credibility - or more precisely, his utter lack of it. On a level unheard-of in a POTUS in our history. I mean, LBJ destroyed his after years of bullshitting about Vietnam, but Trump hasn’t been able to cite an accurate figure or back up a claim since he became President. And NO ONE (especially the media) ever seems to seriously call him on it. At least not when it comes to political issue. During the recent Wall Shutdown, I kept waiting for someone - anyone - to simply get up (on the floor of Congress, say), and demand that Trump provide some sort of verifiable backup for his overblown, hysterical claims about “illegals” and “crime” and “trafficking” or whatever. And exactly WHY his idiot Wall would help. Etc. Simply get up and say “Donald Trump says [whatever]: given his record of lying, why should we believe him?”
I mean, we here do, and realize (at least AFAICT) that Trump’s. Presidency is mostly/mainly Bluster Theater for the rubes, and “not intended to be a factual statement”, but really? Shouldn’t this be more of a foundation for the Opposition?

This crap brought something ,to my mind that I have been wondering about for a while. To me, I would think a major theme in the Democratic political pitches to both the Dem base and Independents would/should be a single-minded harping on (what I see) as Donald Trump’s most blatant and obvious failing. His credibility - or more precisely, his utter lack of it. On a level unheard-of in a POTUS in our history. I mean, LBJ destroyed his after years of bullshitting about Vietnam, but Trump hasn’t been able to cite an accurate figure or back up a claim since he became President. And NO ONE (especially the media) ever seems to seriously call him on it. At least not when it comes to political issue. During the recent Wall Shutdown, I kept waiting for someone - anyone - to simply get up (on the floor of Congress, say), and demand that Trump provide some sort of verifiable backup for his overblown, hysterical claims about “illegals” and “crime” and “trafficking” or whatever. And exactly WHY his idiot Wall would help. Etc. Simply get up and say “Donald Trump says [whatever]: given his record of lying, why should we believe him?”
I mean, we here do, and realize (at least AFAICT) that Trump’s. Presidency is mostly/mainly Bluster Theater for the rubes, and “not intended to be a factual statement”, but really? Shouldn’t this be more of a foundation for the Opposition?

My brother tried to sell me on the Lake Pointe Church here in Rockwall: “It’s the most liberal conservative church.”

I went to the church one Sunday as the final part of the gift to my parents for their 50th anniversary. The sermon was OK, about the lure of the Prosperity Gospel (which is pretty interesting since this church seats 3000 and has it’s own bookstore and coffee shop), and was a pretty decent message since Rockwall is one of the richest counties in the state. The seats were nice, and on the back of the seat in front of you they have cup holders.

i dont think that can be what he’s referencing
there has to be some absorbed cost of labor and by using ‘illegals’ it’s actually lower than it otherwise would be

with full employment it cant be that theyre taking all those jobs from ‘americans’ who would earn, pay taxes etc. and with that higher cost of labor, then the cost of products goes up and in some perverse way so do profits so corporations pay more taxes (yeah right) and the economy is now booming from all this otherwise lost gdp… this is too convoluted an argument for anyone in teh current WH to even think up

A couple of decades ago, I got invited to a local “non-denominational” church, back when I still lived stateside. I went, being the polite fellow that I am, and after the service, never went back and never really spoke much again to the person who invited me aside from generic pleasantries

Turned out to be a New Apostolic Reformation church. Hardcore fundies, biblical literalists, etc. Nope.

On the DVD release of BATMAN XXX, the porno parody of the sixties Adam West BATMAN series released around a decade back, there’s an edit included as an extra that does cut away with a scene transition just as the sex scenes are beginning. IIRC, the non-explicit cut runs around 25 or 26 minutes, while the full version runs two hours.

Yes, I have seen it. Yes, I do own it. Yes, I did find it amusing in places, especially that their Joker, a veteran performer who has been around since the eighties at least and who normally worked racially clean-shaven, actually grew a mustache just so they could replicate Cesar Romero’s mustache “hidden” by white facepaint make-up.

I had my usual Sunday call from my 95 year old uncle this morning. A sweeter man never lived, and he is pretty frail now. But he was watching the St Louis Fox station, and was disturbed by all the violent people coming over the border, and how we needed a wall. I spent some time talking to him gently about it, and just by doing some questioning got him to wonder a bit about what they were telling him. There oughta be a law against that sort of thing: elder abuse, scaring old folks out of their drawers like that.

Depressing. At least he is too sweet a person to be obstreperous about it.

So, last evening as I was feeding the animals, noticed “my” deer herd strolling across the field. I didn’t do anything sudden, as I didn’t want them to start running across the nearby road. About 20 in this bunch. (Sorry on quality; post-sunset phone photo at a distance.)

Everyone is aware I assume that under this type of tax regime there will be deductions for business expenses. Which I am in favor of as it promotes productive investment in plant and paying workers here. But then you have to play constant whack a mole as the rich work to get tax dodges written into law. So even at the height of marginal tax rates in the US, effective rates when all deductions and loopholes etc. were taken into account were rarely much over 40%. I always wonder why we just don’t peg marginal rates at historical effective rates and get rid of all the damn deductions and and shelters and legal tax dodges. I’m pretty sure that if you crunched all the numbers, Fox’s dominance is propped up heavily by demos 65 and over. The average age for a Bill O viewer hovered in the low-mid 70s.

At the same time, the demos for talk radio are just as bad. The majority of them now broker their airtime on the weekends to financial analysts and colon cleansing infomercials because the weekday programming isn’t sustainable financially.

The difference between Fox and talk radio is that Fox can sustain itself by forcing cable providers to carry it at large fees, which the cable companies pass down to us, the subscribers.

So Ailes hit that sweet spot of having Fox appeal primarily to Olds, and they make money off of the rest of us. It’ll work until Fox’s audience literally dies off and/or enough cord cutting puts cable companies in the a position where they cannot afford to continue carrying it.

Exactly. So a business owner sub chapter as can choose to raise wages and invest in plant and equipment rather than paying 70% tax on that top marginal amount. Holy crap, the last two days have been from Satan. The head cold I had turned vicious, nasty and disgusting. I collapsed into a fitful sleep on the plane back to Arizona on Friday night, waking up to discover my nose had dripped all down the front of my shirt. I made it home, pulled out the most important things from my luggage (specifically, my many medications), went upstairs and collapsed into bed. My cat was worried about me; she lay next to me and purred and purred and purred for hours. Now that I’m up, she’s wandered off to sleep somewhere else. (It probably helped that I fed her tuna fish for being such a good kitty.)

I have to try and work tomorrow, so I’m not going to over-exert myself today.

The thing about dominance politics is it only really works towards one end: Establishing that you are the one with the power and can do as you like. And the biggest part of that in what is currently going on is Donny does not simply want to get his funding, he wants a fait accompli from Nancy. He wants it made clear that, in the grand scheme of things, he is the head honcho and Congress answers to him. And an national emergency declaration doesn’t get him that, because it would be him going over Congress to get the money. Nancy would remain unbowed, Congress would remain defiant, and he’d still be stuck screaming on Twitter as his demands went nowhere with the House.

So he’ll keep threatening to use that declaration, threatening to override Congress to get what he wants. But he won’t go through with it because he doesn’t just want the money, he wants Nancy to bend a knee to him. And so long as he fails to get that, he can’t feel as though his dominance is established.

Honestly, Pelosi should say tomorrow that if the GOP is going to enter into these negotiations with a view that Trump will get his money one way or another, then he’s wasting the nation’s time and dwindling patience. And that the Congressional GOP need to make clear that they will support whatever “deal” is made even if the White House threatens a veto.

Yep, cut that bullying bullshit right off. Make America very aware of it and make Trump feel the wrath of everyone for three more weeks.

Meanwhile, press on the Senators that are teetering and force Mitch’s hand too. Tell all of Congress no deals on a wall at this time unless we have full immigration reform pounded out. Security included, but no more screwing around.

His simple-mindedness prevents him from going through with it, however. He’s had chance after chance after chance during this mess to execute the declaration … with cameras focused on him. One time during a primetime address in which everyone expected him to declare an emergency, and he didn’t.

That he doesn’t follow through with it is an awfully big tell.

And the biggest part of that in what is currently going on is Donny does not simply want to get his funding, he wants a fait accompli from Nancy. He wants it made clear that, in the grand scheme of things, he is the head honcho and Congress answers to him. And an national emergency declaration doesn’t get him that, because it would be him going over Congress to get the money. Nancy would remain unbowed, Congress would remain defiant, and he’d still be stuck screaming on Twitter as his demands went nowhere with the House.

So he’ll keep threatening to use that declaration, threatening to override Congress to get what he wants. But he won’t go through with it because he doesn’t just want the money, he wants Nancy to bend a knee to him. And so long as he fails to get that, he can’t feel as though his dominance is established.

I would leave out the “under god” line from the pledge when I was forced to say it. Mostly when I was at the Knights of Columbus with dad for some doings. Those people were big on a prayer and then pledge before we would get to eat.

Well put. It’s come out that this whole wall thing was just a way to keep Trump on track. But he has internalized “build the wall.” In addition to him just wanting to get his own way to assert his power, “build the wall” also plays into how he thinks of himself as a builder instead of a brander. “Build the wall” feeds into Trump’s ego on so many different levels. Not getting his wall will be an enormous blow to his ego, and that will be delightful.

His supporters/enablers are worse than even he is.

The one saving grace is that the current crop of candidates** is stronger, deeper and haven’t been subjected to the decades of demonization Hillary had to endure through the far right. She was unfortunately weakened and Bernie exploited that weakness. A lot of his unbearableness came through sheer luck in 2016, luck he won’t see this time around.

To be blunt, I’m more worried about Jill Stein doing more Russian ratfuckery next year, assuming that the SCO hasn’t zeroed on her sorry ass before then. The receipts against her are obvious and out in the goddam open.
