38 degrees in Denver right now — got up to 47 today, vast improvement from a string of days with highs in the 20’s.

We bought a 250-piece bag of chocolate candy for $10 on the half-price special. Then I had a coupon so we bought a 100-piece bag for $5.99. They are all bite-size, mind you, but every kid is getting at least three or four. Unfortunately there haven’t been too many kids this year, so we’re going to be awash in leftovers.

Note to self — next year, stick to the 60-piece bag…

My son’s too-quiet Tampa ‘hood has adopted Trunk r Treat. Costumed adults set up in pedestrian centers and deal from the trunks of their cars.

When there were more middle school kids in the neighborhood we used to get a couple “packs” of 6 to 10 of them late in the evening, but demographics have changed.
I get some Reeses every year, just in case, and Mr. C. enjoys them after Halloween.

In an unrelated item, thanks for all the Lizardly advice on food processors last night. I ordered the Cuisinart.

What is PSR J1748-2446’s claim to weirdness fame? Simple. It’s the universe’s fastest-spinning celestial object. It’s also a star whose surface is not just solid, but harder than a diamond. Its density is 50 trillion times greater than lead. Its magnetic field sizzles a trillion times more intensely than our Sun’s. In a nutshell, it’s the most extreme example of a neutron star…(he he ellipses)

Imagine living there. Taxes would be very low, but there’d also be several significant drawbacks. The gravity would crush you down so that your protoplasm would spread itself evenly around the surface like a film of oil. You couldn’t stand more than one atom high. But if you could still somehow remain conscious, you’d see every star in the sky cross the heavens from horizon to horizon in less than a thousandth of a second, each appearing as a solid line. Studying the cosmos might be a challenge.

Okay, positive thing as opposed to my usual jeremiads:

Since I got back from Mexico I’ve resolved to make tortillas from scratch.

Did you know the decorative corn they sell in fall is flint corn? I looked it up and it’s starchy corn that’s good for flour making, but a bit rough to eat just cooked.

You can boil and simmer it with cal (calcium hydroxide) to make nixtamal, aka hominy, then grind it to make wet masa…which I’ve now done thrice, to the point I’ve got the timing down to get sticky, workable dough.

So I’ve got about a pound apiece of blue and yellow masa, and now I’m tinkering with pressing tortillas (with various hard, flat objects, lacking a proper press) and getting decent results.

The mid-term objective is getting to point where I can do tacos de canasta, because after having them in CDMX I have a hankering. The endgame is stuffs like tlayudas and the (vast) tamale family.

But right now I’m just chuffed that I made traditional masa that’s almost exactly like the kind I handled out in a shack in Tlaxcala.

Well, Halloween is over.

The East was hit by a fast moving cold front Thursday evening. The leading edge had a major gust front with high winds, heavy rain and torndo warnings. In the DC area it hit the western ‘burbs around 8pm. Since it had been forecast early and heavily broadcast, the kids started around 5pm and by 7:30 the neighborhood was deserted.

I passed out the usual 50 or so full size kitkats, about 2/3rds to the kids and 1/3rd to their adults who waited for them in the street rather than coming to door. I did have one child who came with a large group who left with the first half the kids, but before I had a chance to give him a kitkat. Amazing how many kids who are so overstimulated that they cannot focus. But I guess that is one of the points of the holiday.

And of course, I have had a ‘few’. Let me say that I do not recommend Katkat bars as a pre-dinner appetizer. Don’t ask me how I reached this conclusion.

The front passed by within an hour. And with it, the rain. But it is still gusty and the temperature is dropping from the mid-70s into the 40s.

I find I like folk and roots music as I get older. It has a simple honesty I really like. I find if lyrics are too abstract, I get distracted trying to understand that and I can’t focus on the instrumentation as much.

30 degrees here with a modest accumulation of snow. My sister wasn’t returning home till after 7Pm, so I sat at their house and distributed candy for them, since no children visit my retirement community. Despite the less than ideal weather, there were about 50 visitors and each child could take 2 sweets — there was an assortment of Kit Kats, Pretzels, Twizzlers, and several others for selection. One child walked part way up the driveway by herself and then retreated. I opened the front door and heard her exclaim she was terrified and wanted others to join her before coming back. The skeletons with flashing eyes and the talking pumpkin may have been a little overwhelming for her.

I agree that the Republicans got fewer popular votes. And that they got the majority of the electoral votes. And that there are, at least to me, a lot of questions on how much help they got in their election efforts.

I am not sure that they are currently governing successfully. Although, I can see the argument that they could view it that way, if the only metrics they care about are shifting the country’s wealth to a few ultra rich, and appointing lots of Federal judges.

I agree that the Republicans got fewer popular votes. And that they got the majority of the electoral votes. And that there are, at least to me, a lot of questions on how much help they got in their election efforts.

I am not sure that they are currently governing successfully. Although, I can see the argument that they could view it that way, if the only metrics they care about are shifting the country’s wealth to a few ultra rich, and appointing lots of Federal judges.

And those are, in fact, the only metrics they care about.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Trump must think that NY is going to move on his ass like a bitch because he’s filed papers to move to Florida - corruptalago being his ultimate destination.

He must think that moving will somehow prevent NY from going after him.

That’s not how it works though. NY can continue to investigate on the tax filings they have and can continue to investigate further, even when he moves out of the state. That’s what he fears most - being outed as a sham and scam.

Recall too that he sought to claim a STAR tax rebate from NY despite being ineligible for it. The rebate is only available to those making less than $500,000 a year and his FEC filing claimed he made $362 million. A billionaire would not be entitled to it. To claim the STAR break, he’d have to have made Trump Tower his primary residence.

$302 seems like a pittance to you and me, but it indicates that whoever put together his taxes had a different take on his income than the FEC filings. It’s also the tip of the iceberg as all his small businesses and close corps all inure benefits to him personally and directly, and he repeatedly moves money around from one to the other to keep them all afloat as he is notably highly leveraged and infamously incapable of getting US banks to lend to him and Deutsche Bank has been a major lender despite warning signs that they too shouldn’t be doing business with him.

But unlike someone who has little or no income - like folks in the lower class, Trump can get banks to do his bidding. If you owe the bank $100, the bank owns you.

If you owe the bank $1 billion, you own the bank.

And all this is just a backdrop to the fact that Trump’s in the next phase of impeachment, and all he can do is pound on the table and rant incoherently (or more incoherently than usual) with the rest of the GOP following along.

I wanted to comment on the thing upthread where the one lady paid for the groceries for the mom that had five kids that was removing things from her cart because she couldn’t afford it and how we should be outraged that this kind of stuff happens every day in “The richest country in the world”.

That’s absolutely right.

We should be outraged.

But here’s the real problem: Although we are the richest country in the world, that wealth is primarily gobbled up by a small cadre of super rich and the remaining scraps tossed to the rest of us.

This isn’t just an opinion. The United States has the HIGHEST income inequality of almost any developed nation. Most of the countries who rank higher than us on the inequality list are corrupt as fuck South American countries or corrupt as fuck African countries.

The wealth disparity should be glaringly obvious to all of us: We have one class of people who can afford to drop $112 000 on an advent calendar, $425 for of designer jeans made to look like they are already dirty and $57 for a fancy bottle of Chilean water while the rest of us just hope that we can scrape together enough cash to get what we need at Wal-Mart and Dollar General to have food for the week, while at the same time hoping our cars last another two weeks without breaking down.

America is an awesome place if you have a shit ton of money.

If you don’t, well…you end up like the rest of us: Just fighting to get by day by day, while other developed nations look on in shock, wondering: “What the fuck is wrong with you people?”

But because we’re the self proclaimed “Greatest Nation in the World”, this massive disparity is little more than the cost of being awesome and kicking everyone else ass.

At least, that’s how some Americans see it.

The rest us of fight on for change, while worrying at the same time that it may never come.

This is not the kind of nation our Founders had in mind.

But here’s the real problem: Although we are the richest country in the world, the problem is that wealth is primarily gobbled up by a small cadre of super rich and the remaining scraps tossed to the rest of us.

We also equate capital with private property.

It is to an extent, but the nature of our legislation regulating limited-liability corporations makes a clear distinction between capital and property.

They were designed to protect and encourage investors by removing the risk of them losing more than they had invested. But it also encourages them to suck as much profit out of the corporations (euphemistically called “increasing shareholder value”) and passing the moral risk of bankruptcy onto the taxpayers and creditors.

I will never forgive Romney for his “Corporations are people!” remark, he should know that although corporations can be legal persons in lawsuits, they exist only because we have created a body of legislation and regulations that allow them to, which is not the case with flesh-and-blood human beings.

Tomi thinks she’s being clever mocking AOC as a former bartender but she’s actually showing what a snob she really is.

My point is that guys like that only care about their bottom line. Someone like a former service worker like AOC understands that your customer is more than just money. My cousin is a bartender. The people that lost their jobs when Bain Capital did what it did meant nothing to Mitt. Their livelhoods meant nothing to him.

Wealth as an indicator of your worth as a human being is a huge problem. My one percenter sibling thinks anyone who isn’t rich is a failure as a human being. My brother-in-law and his wife have the same attitude. Dude and I are less than they are because we are part of the former middle class, struggling to pay our bills.

The only thing that matters is money. This attitude is one of the biggest problems we must deal with. How do we change it? Can we change it?

The Halloween Candy Socialism Story gets repeated because it oversimplifies something complicated, includes a cruel element the intended reader finds satisfying, and uses the word “socialism” to mean Taboo Bad Thing.

The point is that it’s hackneyed and shallow and thus easy to repeat, over an over, as a substitute for actually thinking. It’s affective bypass: why reason when you can feel indignant and smug, and intuitively “know” anybody that thinks otherwise is inherently dumb.

It also includes the framing of their actual worldview…stupid cruel…as a “joke,” so when it’s pointed out it’s dumb, they can be contemptuous of a serious critique because “just a joke.”

The Halloween Candy Socialism Story gets repeated because it oversimplifies something complicated, includes a cruel element the intended reader finds satisfying, and uses the word “socialism” to mean Taboo Bad Thing.

The point is that it’s hackneyed and shallow and thus easy to repeat, over an over, as a substitute for actually thinking. It’s affective bypass: why reason when you can feel indignant and smug, and intuitively “know” anybody that thinks otherwise is inherently dumb.

It also includes the framing of their actual worldview…stupid cruel…as a “joke,” so when it’s pointed out it’s dumb, they can be contemptuous of a serious critique because “just a joke.”

- it’s total capitalism - payment for being entertained / acknowledging the work of making the costume, etc

though we can be dark about it and realize that ‘trick or treat’ is a form of extortion

I am tired of a system that imprisons the poor awaiting trial because they don’t have funds for bail, while the wealthy manage to live comfortably outside because the bail is never too high to be a burden on them.

It’s called the NICE - NSC Intelligence Collaboration Environment. And PBS has some pretty specific details that indicate that there was a conspiracy to move the transcript off the regular server to keep it out of the regular flow:

Like most presidential calls with foreign leaders, the Trump-Zelenskiy call was put into the T-Net system where certain individuals are granted permission to read it based on their need to know, according to two individuals with direct knowledge of the system. NSC officials working on African issues, for example, would not routinely have been given access to the Ukraine call.

Taking it off T-Net would involve systems specialists, according to the individuals, who were not authorized to discuss the systems publicly and spoke only on condition of anonymity. They would have to identify every person who accessed the document and then wipe any trace of the memcon off the T-Net server. After that, other NSC workers would have had to place the material onto the N.I.C.E. system, which is physically housed in the NSC intelligence directorate.

According to one of the individuals familiar with the White House classified computer systems, Eisenberg couldn’t have actually moved it to N.I.C.E. by himself. That raises a question, the individual said, as to what reasons were given for needing it to be moved.

Because that is what they want. 2020 is shaping up to be the worst disaster for the party in decades, not helped in the least by an impeachment effort that is virtually impossible to defend against because the man at the center copped to his crimes on live TV. And the biggest worry isn’t just losing the presidency or the Senate, it’s the carnage down ticket in a census year, which could mean losing power at the state and local levels for the next decade. Given all that’s at stake, not even putting Justice Kegger on the bench means much. They’re scared shitless and begging for a “miracle,” even if that “miracle” is written in Cyrillic.

I have never been too fond of “that guy is such a guilty asshole, only an asshole lawyer would defend him.” Without zealous representation, even for cockbags, our system doesn’t work. I have, however, many times felt sorry for lawyers with idiot asshole clients who are clearly guilty. It just looks like a terribly un-fun job.
