Going back to the Pandemic Discussions of a couple of threads ago…

Back in the late 1970’s I read William O’Neill’s “Plagues and Peoples” which is about how infectious diseases affect history.

Since then I have read a bunch of fascinating accounts of how diseases have affected human history and how humans are responding.

For example, The Justinian Plague of 541CE is viewed as probably the first reported occurrence of the Bubonic plague. It is thought to have killed off between one-tenth and one-quarter of world’s human population.

The ramifications it had for the Europe are fascinating.

“The plague’s long-term effects on European and Christian history were enormous. As the disease spread to port cities around the Mediterranean, the struggling Goths were reinvigorated and their conflict with Constantinople entered a new phase. The plague weakened the Byzantine Empire at a critical point, when Justinian’s armies had nearly retaken all of Italy and the western Mediterranean coast; the evolving conquest would have reunited the core of the Western Roman Empire with the Eastern Roman Empire. Although the conquest occurred in 554, the reunification did not last long. In 568, the Lombards invaded Northern Italy, defeated the small Byzantine army that had been left behind, and established the Kingdom of the Lombards. The plague may have also contributed to the success of the Arabs a few generations later in the Byzantine-Arab Wars.

The impact of the Plague of Justinian on the history of Britain was significant. Some scholars have suggested that the plague facilitated the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain, as its aftermath coincided with the renewed Saxon offensives in the 550s. Maelgwn, king of Gwynedd in Wales, was said to have died of the “Yellow Plague of Rhos” around 547 and, from 548 to 549, plague devastated Ireland as well. Saxon sources from this period are silent, as there are no 6th-century English documents. “

Plague of Justinian
en.wikipedia.org

TL;DR-

The plague may have prevented the Byzantine Empire from reuniting the Western and Eastern Roman Empires, from fighting off a series of invasions and possibly from fighting off the Arab Invasions. And it may have been the reason why the native Britons couldn’t fight off the Angle and Saxon invasions.

I’ll probably drop a few more stories as I get time…

Guys. It’s going to be hard to spin this as doing for partisan reasons. I’d be shocked if 20 Republicans or any Republicans vote for impeachment but the ads are going to be brutal asking “Why didn’t you vote to remove him?” This honestly is some excellent work by Schiff and the managers. Only FNC can spin this which is why they’re trying to already set up the Democratic nominee as having “stolen” it from Bernie.

There’s no functional difference between refusing to sell arms for fear that the other side might escalate the conflict and selling that weaponry with explicit instructions that it never be used. The only real difference is that the latter puts money in the pockets of weapon manufacturers, who then pass some of it on as “campaign donations.”

Yep: let me edit/repost a comment I made at another blog:

But as eloquent as the House Managers may be, it wouldn’t make a difference if the House had Daniel Webster as lead: the “trial” IS rigged, and the “verdict” is a foregone conclusion. And public opinion is an irrelevancy. The Senate Republicans, during this impeachment trial, remind me of nothing so much as one of those smirking all-white juries in the Jim Crow South hearing a case with a black plaintiff and white defendant (or vice versa): they don’t really care about the facts, their decision will be based primarily on their prejudices, and their main concerns are first, getting home in time for dinner; and secondly, annoyance at having to “hear” a case they never wanted to deal with in the first place (“Justice” of course, having little or nothing to do with any of their considerations).

The reporter is pretending that it was outrageous that Trump delayed the aid payment for 55 days. Fact is Trump gave infinitely more aid to Ukraine than previous administration, which gave only meal kits and blankets. Trump gave hundreds of millions and sold them missiles.

he says he held the aid because of ‘corruption related to biden and burisma’

what changed in those 55 days?

did he satisfy himself there was no corruption and so released the funds?

did he not satisfy himself and release the funds anyway? IF SO, WHY? What Changed?

LOL, Fox reporting a “source” who says it’s “clear” Trump wasn’t serious when talking about taking out Yovanovitch

“I spoke to a source earlier today who was familiar with the recording … he tells me … it is clear that the president was not really being serious about it.”

who?

You know, I wish we could get it straight. Is Trump a “straight shooter” who tells it as it is or is he a constant jokester.

It’s amazing how the press continues to dance around and avoid this point: everything that Trump and the GOP are accusing Biden of to distract from things, Trump and his family are literally doing non-stop and have been since the beginning of his term.

Almost everything is projection with him. And pet the press keeps treating his accusations with the utmost of credulity while any accusations against him are treated with kid gloves and constant equivocations.

“Whataboutism” is not a winning legal strategy, either in a criminal court or the court of public opinion.

The former is definitely true.

The latter I wish I could be more sure about.

Alternatively it could be that “You don’t know what you’re talking about, so why should I take you seriously?!” BS that wingnuts thing is the way to instantly “win” an argument.

Possibly. I remember a few years ago I had a history instructor who insisted that on the mid-term we would have to pick out on a blank map a country or city of his choosing. He chose Samarkand and almost all of us got it correct.

I’m optimistic about retaking the Senate this fall.

Moi aussi: albeit somewhat cautiously: just as an armchair-analyist’s SWAG, I think the worst-case scenario for the next Senate is likely to be a 50-50 tie.

Pompeo belonged to the Tea Party and persecuted Hillary over Benghazi — so expecting honesty from him is a hopeless cause. His treatment of Yavonovitch is beyond appalling. Just confirms there is no relationship between ethics and academic performance.

Small oddity in all this - his [Pompeo’s] aides have an unmarked world map readily available?? What? Does he quiz people’s geography skills on a regular basis?

More likely he keeps them around so he can draw in countries (with a Sharpie, of course) when Trump wants to know where they are. I.e. draw them in where Trump thinks they are…..

It also shows that Trump claiming to care about Ukraine is a lie. As it turns out, I do care about Ukraine. I even have a disagreement on a major issue with the Ukrainian government(the acknowledgment of the Rusyn people as a separate ethnic group) but I believe in Ukraine’s democracy and desire to be an ally in a democratic Europe where shared democracy, constitutional rights, & human rights matter. By placing Ukraine in danger, Trump puts us in danger because a Ukraine dominated by Russia will not be democratic, have constitutional law, or respect human rights.

Of course, Trump and McConnell will prevent any actions to secure our elections, like Democrats want. They will continue to push “space force” instead of a clear and present danger posed by foreign powers interfering in our elections thanks to Trump openly soliciting foreign interference repeatedly - both Russia and Ukraine. In the latter case, it was full blown extortion attempt. The ask itself is a crime.

I’ll probably drop a few more stories as I get time…

the moral seems to be that history is always written by people with the most shit on them.

the moral seems to be that history is always written by people with the most shit on them.

Another moral of history, especially when it comes to Y. pestis is that it is a lethal trap to believe that your devotion, your fear of God, your faith will save you.
I recall the story of this town in North Africa in the late 1340’s. It was renowned for its Godfearing, righteous people. They believed that that would save them from the pestilence… A little under a month later, a traveller passed by the city, only to find every single inhabitant dead. All 20,000 or so of them.

And I recently saw a documentary on a archaelogical site here in Sweden. Long story short, it was an entire family, part of which was buried proper, part of which appears to have been buried by the elements on site. The archaelogist said it was a special kind of chill when it dawned on her that the extended family of 25 or so individuals appeared to either have starved to death, or died by an illness. 5th or 6th century C.E.

Yup. He also gave his staffers $3 Starbucks cards. The minimum value is usually $5.

Mittens’ real aspiration in life is to be a bishop in the Mormon Church. The Presidency was to have locked that in.

Two more stories:

Mitt hated to ride the State House elevator with his peons. He hired security to sweep the elevator before he went home to Belmont.

Mitt also had good hiring instincts: He hired a “Labor Secretary” who didn’t work, preferring to shop on Newbury St. (admittedly, a short walk from Beacon Hill.) Another staffer impersonated a police officer.

Yes!

I was just reading about that case. Where a Swedish tomb dating from 3500-3000 BCE was excavated and found to contain evidence of Yersinia Pestis. This is contemporaneous to the Neolithic Decline.

The Neolithic decline was a rapid collapse in populations between five and six thousand years ago (approximately 3000 BC) during the Neolithic period in western Eurasia. The specific causes of that broad population decline are still debated. While heavily-populated settlements were regularly created, abandoned, and resettled during the Neolithic, after around 5400 BP, a great number of those settlements were permanently abandoned. The population decline is associated with worsening agricultural conditions and a decrease in cereal production. Other suggested causes include the emergence of communicable diseases spread from animals living in close quarters with humans.

Rascovan et al (2019) suggest that plague could have also caused the population decline. That is supported by the discovery of a tomb in modern-day Sweden containing 79 corpses buried within a short time, in which the authors discovered fragments of a unique strain of the plague pathogen Yersinia pestis. In that strain, the authors also discovered the “plasminogen activator gene that is sufficient to cause pneumonic plague”, an extremely deadly form of the plague which is airborne and directly communicable between humans.

That sounds like a warning to the Republican Senators. And a repeat of what the House Managers have said.

That what is already known is damning. That there is more out there. That the senators do not know yet what it is. That it will get out. And that the Republican senators are going to get spattered with it.

Couldn’t happen to a better bunch.

Sharing this video of my favorite sumo wrestler, Enho, getting his kachi koshi (eighth out of 15 wins) today. Remember, Enho is just over 5’6” and weighs about 218 pounds. His opponent today, Abi, is 6’3” and 324 pounds. Roll forward to 1:00 to see Enho make short work of Abi by basically throwing him out of the ring.

ETA: I believe he’ll get a special technique prize (and I think somewhere around $20,000) on Sunday.

One of us is that nut saying “yet you exist in society” from the Matt Bors cartoon.

I’m not sure which.

Oh, God/dess. They’ve invited the Strasserites into the tent, and it’s impossible to tell which ones are too ignorant that they existed to know that, and which ones are fellow travellers.

Hitler’s main competition was the SDP, literally the Socialist Party of Germany. The famous Nimholler poem mentions trade unionists and social democrats but what did he know that some idiot with an agenda to call Hitler left wing. Also Candace Owens known liberal praised Hitkerism pre invasion of Poland.

Trump is going to have another shit fit and Susan will be there on cue to tell us how disappointed she is. Honestly, I despise a Susan Collins more than I do a true Trump believer because the the latter honestly believes in Donald Trump’s bullshit. Collins on the other hand claims to be outraged by certain behavior and then she enables it. I really hope her state throws her out this November. Enough of this shit.

He knows what he looked like because he’d been practicing in a mirror for days, hoping he’d have a chance to use it.

Meanwhile, we have proof that the Saudis were doing all the things that Trumpworld was claiming the Iranians were doing, about to do, etc.

The Saudis are going after Americans who question MBS. Trump’s enabling him.
