I know this is stupid because this is exactly what Martin Luther King, Jr. called him, but I wish that qualification would come before announcers called John Lewis “The Boy From Troy.” Yes, I know I am “virtue signaling” whatever the fuck that is, but it was jarring to hear it without context on even MSNBC without a pre-explanation, given the freight that the word “boy” holds with Black men, particularly in the south.

So much of this history is being lost thanks to the passage of time, media mendacity, ignorance, and expediency.

Lewis was a man who was beaten within inches of his life for seeking to have equal rights and protections under the law. Many like him were murdered by police who are virtually indistinguishable from the current DHS thug posse and cops walking the local beat who see blacks as target practice and who think they can shoot first and often, knowing that they can always claim that they were fearful for their lives all while the black man was unarmed, running away, or under control with a knee on their neck.

Lewis overcame so much to become a US Congressman, and yet in the year he died, we’re still watching white nationalists seeking to deprive blacks of their voice. We’re still watching the GOP care more about protecting Confederate treasonweasel statues and base names than ensuring that all people are protected under the law.

I have a billboard in my town that has been rotating through Republican memes. This edition is telling Walz to “not use bad data”, “It’s Time to Open Up!” Uhhh, excuse me, but the people using bad data are the ones demanding we reopen, not the good governor.

I want to explain something that I’ve probably said here before. I spent my summers in rural Georgia with my grandparents and in proximity to my mom’s clan in the 60s, 70s, and early 80s. I loved my grandparents. I still respect their legacy in many ways. But the truth was that it was almost feudal in their control of the black community. Tar-paper homes on concrete-block foundations owned by my grandfather? Check. (They didn’t have running water or phones until the mid 1970s.) Abundant use of the n-word by my grandfather when my grandmother wasn’t around? Check (he’d use the word “nigra” to skate by). A dining room in my grandparents’ house with a foot-operated bell to the kitchen for “Lizzie”? Check.

In 1955 my mom got a grant to work for a Christian foundation on the University of Illinois campus. Her roommate was a Japanese-American woman. She took her new friend home to Georgia and my grandmother was livid: how could she explain to the black woman working for her that under no circumstances would they ever eat together when there was a yellow woman at table? That same summer my mom met my dad in Illinois and decided that she couldn’t live in Georgia anymore and so married him (out of love, mostly, of course).

Anyway, I heard elderly Black men being called “boy” so much in the south that it jarred me even as a teenager. Illinois was and is viciously racist in many places, and that was certainly true in Champaign. But instead of calling Black men “boy,” they just didn’t hire them and made sure that they couldn’t buy homes in the same neighborhoods.

Jion the clueb.

The very first course I ever took in high school* was a summer course in typing: we learned on IBM electrics (the kind with the moving carriage), and I have to say that I have at least been consistent in my skill levels ever since then. I was a lousy typist on the carriage electrics, I was a lousy typist on the Selectrics - I was an even lousier typist on manual typewriters; and when electronic systems came in, I proved to be a lousy typist on them as well. And screen keyboards haven’t improved my skill-level either.

At least now correcting mistakes is a bit easier.

More than 300 members of the Atlanta-based Black militia NFAC, or “Not F**king Around Coalition” came to Louisville demanding justice for 26-year-old Breonna Taylor, an ER technician who was fatally shot by officers in March.

Wearing all black and carrying assault rifles, members marched in military-style formation from Baxter Park in the Russell neighborhood to Metro Hall where they stopped around 2:45 p.m. at police barricades.

Right across was a smaller group of 50 far-right “Three Percenter” militia members, who were also heavily armed.

Okaloosa County: RECKLESS DRIVER SAYS HE WAS TRYING TO SCARE UNRULY KIDS IN HIS CAR
Matt Boster

Multiple motorists trying to avoid a head-on collision say they were forced off State Road 85 last night by a man heading south who repeatedly drove into the northbound lanes. It happened south of Laurel Hill around 6:30 p.m.

After a traffic stop on the reckless vehicle, Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies found two small children crying loudly in the 2012 Dodge, which was being driven by 42-year old Timothy Gajka of Crestview. Gajka then told deputies he was just “trying to scare” the kids because they were misbehaving.

He was charged with DUI, two counts of child neglect, and possession of marijuana

I worked with a nice upstanding guy who liked the Rumors-era Fleetwood Mac. We talked a bit about the history of the band and I brought in a copy of Then Play On (the last album with Peter Green) that has this song on it. He listened for a while and then handed back the CD really quickly. He couldn’t get it out of his player fast enough.
