NHL postpones remainder of weekday games in support of protests against police shootings (CBC)

The NHL has postponed all four of its playoff games scheduled for Thursday and Friday in the aftermath of the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man, in Wisconsin last weekend.

The players requested the postponements and the league supported the decision, the NHL and NHL Players’ Association said in a joint statement released at 6 p.m. ET.

Hecuba's daughter  Aug 27, 2020 • 4:26:34pm

The Kenosha police department needs to be dismantled and rebuilt from scratch. Their affinity for white supremacist militia groups led to the Rittenhouse shooting. They are culpable for allowing and encouraging armed thugs to menace the protesters. And then they claim that the victims brought this on themselves for being out after curfew, while they did nothing to stop the militia from violating curfew.

I tried posting this important tweet thread this morning, but my computer crashed and I had to go tackle the weekly shopping, paying my property taxes, buying postage stamps: that sort of day! So trying again. This is by the author of the term ‘epistemic closure’ and it is really interesting, and puts in plain language why it is so hard to get through to a Trumper or religious fanatic.

“… Kenosha County prosecutors charged Kyle Rittenhouse, 17, with one count each of first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree reckless homicide and one count of attempted first-degree intentional homicide, court records show.

He was also charged with two counts of reckless endangerment, and with possessing a dangerous weapon as a minor. …”

While I was out on my tour today, I heard the last few minutes of Terry Gross’s interview with Alexis Madrigal. Fresh Air

‘Atlantic’ journalist Alexis Madrigal says millions of at-home saliva tests for COVID could be the key to life returning to normal — even if the tests are less accurate than the traditional PCR tests. We talk about the advantages and disadvantages of different kinds of testing, and what it would take for the government to fund and manufacture millions of daily tests. “I think what’s happened in the U.S. has been so catastrophic on so many levels — economically, psychologically, educationally — that we have to be at least willing to entertain the idea of a fairly radical plan that could work,” Madrigal says.

At the very end, he said that what troubled him most right now was that the southern part of the US had dropping test numbers. They are just not testing. And the states that were hit hard early are still pushing the testing, and he said it was why they were being comparatively successful. I know in Illinois, once we opened up it started to spread, but when it did, people suddenly started being more careful, and our percentage of positive cases started dropping again. Knock wood, that continues. Today, everywhere I went inside was masks on, very few rebels.

He hates us and he hates his followers. As someone said on the previous thread, the chairs look like tombstones. Quite appropriate in that this will be another super spreader event and people will die because of it.

When I said that the picture of this nearly made me vomit, I meant it. This is yet another piece of the dismantling of our democracy.

This is in that thread: “Local media is dead. Everything is nationalized. And the digital divide is real, real, real. So many people don’t have broadband. No streaming. But they have FB memes and that’s how they get their news. That is the reality for people outside big cities without broadband.”

Here’s my question (not just to Anymouse). If you can access FB, why can’t you access other content on the internet? I would think FB would be frustrating without broadband.

26
stpaulbear  Aug 27, 2020 • 4:42:18pm

Dead threaded so bringing this comment forward:

There was a point in the finale after Pence’s speech last night where a group of disabled people were escorted and crowded to the edge of the pit where the ‘first families’ were soaking up the love. Trump saw the ‘cripples’ and made a bee line off behind Melania to the other side where the normal people were (starts at about 5:00) and then he made sure to stay 6’ back. Pence was up at the line talking to a crowd of people. No one was wearing masks.

These guys are the most irresponsible assholes. I was watching this segment last night because the MSNBC crew was commenting over the top and we weren’t being subjected to what anyone in the crowd was saying. I went back to it today just to see if it was as bad as I thought it was. It’s so bad. It’s a super spreader and only totally delusional people would be anywhere near it. Pence is really this dangerously stupid.

RNC video showing violence in ‘Biden’s America’ is actually Barcelona (Yahoo, via The Independent)

The Republican National Convention aired a video meant to paint the George Floyd protests and Black Lives Matter demonstrations as inherently violent, chaotic events, but included a scene from protests in Barcelona, Spain.

A public broadcaster in Catalonia reported that the images in question - of fires burning in the streets - were captured in 2019 in Barcelona. The protests in Spain began after a Spanish court sentenced Catalan separatists to prison.

A pair of sisters provides a voice over for the video, offering a dire warning for viewers that “this is a taste of Biden’s America” as images of protests play.

That, too.

The other thing, too, is how do memes get from Facebook to meat space? The same way they did before Facebook.

There are channels of communication that are not amenable to outside competition (i.e., churches, for all parts of the political spectrum). Might be a minor shift in opinion motion, but they haven’t made the case (as far as I can tell) for a whole new way of opinion influence.

This was talked about a couple days ago:
https://www.politico.com/news/2020/08/26/us-troops-injured-russian-forces-syria-402347

Videos of the encounter that emerged on Twitter on Wednesday appeared to show a Russian vehicle ramming an American vehicle, and a Russian helicopter flying low over U.S. forces.

Again, check out the video. The Russians drive up from a couple hundred meters away to attack the US vehicle.

But something I just noticed:

The draft statement POLITICO reviewed, written by U.S. Central Command, said a Russian vehicle intentionally rammed a coalition vehicle, and that four U.S. troops were injured.

No, they did all that and posted a video of them doing it just to mock us.

So I was ID less for about a month, got a replacement.

Well, I just walked into my room and the plastic storage thing that had been a rain catcher in my room had something in it.

I looked, and uh. It’s the lost ID.

WTF?

Oh absolutely. The Louisiana Purchase made us a bicoastal nation. That defines us.

The Louisiana Purchase included no part of the Pacific coast. It did make us bicoastal in the sense the second coast was the Gulf of Mexico.

So do my wife and I have right-of-return to France, since we live in the Purchase area?

Yes. We just practice a passage as one person and the director/sectional leader helps us. Then we mute and “sing” the song.

It’s challenging, but we are working to record ourselves solo to put together a video montage of our songs.

We are not, by any means, a professional choir. I hadn’t sung with purpose in ages. So doing a solo recording to put together with the chorus will be a huge accomplishment for me.
I can sing, but this is something way different.
