re: #257 Hecuba’s daughter

Let’s be fair — that is deceptive because there are more people living here than any time in American history. Deaths as a percentage of population would be more apples-to-apples comparison (sort of) but can still be misleading because it ignores the age distribution of population. I wonder what the statistics were like during the last great epidemic, which appeared to be a far more lethal disease.

I see zero reason to be fair.

It amazes me that people think that no matter what the police officer is doing, everyone has to sit there and take it. I understand some of the practical concerns—i.e. he/she will shoot you. But from a self-defense angle, I don’t have to continue to be bludgeoned, particularly if I didn’t start anything.

PAUL: My feeling is that there is interstate criminal traffic being paid for across state lines, but you won’t know unless you arrest them. Otherwise you just think, “Oh, these are some normal hoodlums from a big city.”
I promise you that at least some of the members and the people who attacked us were not from D.C., they flew here in a plane, they’ve all got fresh new clothes, and they were paid to be here.
It is a crime to do that and it needs to be traced, the FBI needs to investigate, but the only way you can do it is you have to arrest people. And usually we say, “Oh well, you didn’t get hurt so we’re not going to arrest them.” They were inciting a riot and they would have killed us had the police not been there.
They all need to be arrested, and I’m not saying forever, but they need to be arrested, questioned, they need to say, “Where are you staying?” and the bills need to be subpoenaed by a judge to say, “Who paid for your bill, how did you get here on a plane and staying in a fancy hotel and yet you’re acting like a criminal?”
Something’s going on here, and it’s much bigger than people think, but the bottom line is, we can’t let the United States become Portland, and that’s what my fear is: that the United States is going to be on fire if we have no police.

Reads like Rand Paul is trying to get more protestors killed by AR15 toting terrorists.

But trump doesn’t have many items in his toolkit and he is stupid. really fucking stupid. stupid as the dog who attacks a skunk, the day after he gets sprayed by the same skunk.

I don’t know how they are going to make it happen, but I have little doubt that it well. riots, bombings, protests….anything that can be blamed on democrats.

The Special Hypocrisy of Melania Trump’s Speech at the RNC, New Yorker, good!

In place of roses, the First Lady grew concrete. Prior to her address at the Republican National Convention, on Tuesday night, the White House unveiled Melania Trump’s renovations to the Rose Garden, which had been pitched as her personal project. Cultivation of the garden would link her to Jackie Kennedy, the one figure whose lineage Melania, and her boosters, can tenuously claim. Homage, to Melania, looked like draining the floriculture of its traditional crimson and magenta, replacing the garden’s formerly bright bushes with flowers of the palest shades, and removing the row of crab-apple trees around the perimeter, leaving a walkway of fresh pavement in their stead. If First Lady is an unofficial office whose only, and therefore critical, mandate is to rustle up symbolism, then Melania’s redesign was flawless: the content of the metaphor was clean and clear.

Drained of life, the garden now better functions as a stage. Cameras followed Melania as she strode into the garden, where she received movie-star lighting, to deliver her speech.

hi

local news:

Wildfire burns about 4,000 acres in western Nebraska (Omaha World-Herald)

Yesterday, the Hubbard Gap Fire was ten acres.

A wildfire that has burned about 4,000 acres has threatened farmstead, ranches and agriculture properties in western Nebraska.

The fire, dubbed the Hubbard Gap Fire, is burning in the Wildcat Hills south of McGrew, Nebraska. McGrew is about 18 miles southeast of Scottsbluff, Nebraska.

Air support from Nebraska and South Dakota have dropped retardant to stop the spread of the fire, according to a press release from the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency. Two Nebraska Army National Guard helicopters and 11 soldiers are on their way to continue air support.

About 25 volunteer fire departments staged in a field south of McGrew to fight the fire. Six firefighters were injured. Two of the six were hospitalized overnight.

Banner County commissioners declared a local emergency and Gov. Pete Ricketts approved a state emergency declaration, which allows state funds to be used to fight the fire.

McGrew is the nearest village, in Scott’s Bluff County on US-26, population 99.

The “before” pictures I recall seeing had lawn in the centre running all the way to the hedged-in borders. There was (and probably still is) a colonnade running around the outside of Rose Garden but to get in to the lawn area and see the flowers from the garden itself requires feet, not wheels.

I’m not disabled myself but a long time back when I was younger and fitter I was peripherally involved in helping out folks with disabilities, including pushing wheelchairs. Lawns, sand and gravel were a pain in the butt to deal with. I had more sympathy for the alt.pave.the.earth folks after my experiences.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — TikTok celebrities Bryce Hall and Blake Gray are facing criminal charges after they hosted recent parties in the Hollywood Hills despite the city’s ban on large gatherings during the coronavirus pandemic, authorities said Friday.

The Los Angeles city attorney’s office filed misdemeanor charges Thursday against Hall and Gray. The internet celebrities with millions of followers on TikTok share a home and allegedly held two parties less than a week apart.

It was not immediately clear if Hall and Gray had attorneys who could speak on their behalf and efforts to reach their representatives were unsuccessful.

The whole thing is tainted now because his girlfriend is very dear to us and it hurts her to hear. I’ve rarely been as disappointed in a person as I am with JK Rowling.

The most common version, I believe, is attributed to Lyndon Johnson, and involves the suggestion of copulating with domestic swine.
(But, of course, it’s still the “denial” that is central…..)

“Make your opponent deny he’s beating his dog.” Or however the quote goes.

It appears in various tellings of Lyndon B. Johnson saying it. The tactic is as old as politics (make your opponent deny something he or she didn’t say or do), to get the press to talk about the accusation rather than the candidate.

From Hunter S. Thompson’s telling of the story in Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail ‘72:

This is one of the oldest and most effective tricks in politics. Every hack in the business has used it in times of trouble, and it has even been elevated to the level of political mythology in a story about one of Lyndon Johnson’s early campaigns in Texas. The race was close and Johnson was getting worried. Finally he told his campaign manager to start a massive rumor campaign about his opponent’s life-long habit of enjoying carnal knowledge of his own barnyard sows.

“Christ, we can’t get away with calling him a pig-fucker,” the campaign manager protested. “Nobody’s going to believe a thing like that.

“I know,” Johnson replied. “But let’s make the sonofabitch deny it.”

I finally remembered to call the St. Paul Dept. of Safety and Inspections about it today and they were VERY interested in sending someone out to check them out. I also found out that the alternate laundromat is also owned by the same people and has the same sign on the door. I reported them too so the city will be inspecting all of their properties.

After the RNC convention this week, I was really in the mood to piss off a Trumpoid. I hope my actions leave someone very unhappy and ranting (and complying with the city’s covid regulations).

Donald Trump is using the LBJ tactic of accusing your opponent of having carnal knowledge of a pig. He has been doing it the whole time since he ran for office.

Accusing Ted Cruz’s dad of being an assassin of John F. Kennedy
Accusing ¡Heb! Bush of being “low energy.”
Accusing Joe Biden of being “sleepy.”
Accusing Hunter Biden of being in some corrupt deal in Ukraine.
Attacking Carly Fiorina over her looks.

Each of these has the press then pay attention to the accusation and debunk it where appropriate. When it’s a personal attack (such as on Cruz’s father), Democrats will also come in to debunk the attack or defend the victim.

The point is to aim the press away from your campaign platform or achievements. This happens in all levels of politics (my opponent attacking me as an atheist rather than attacking my record on the village board, for example).

Republicans attacked John F. Kennedy for being a Catholic, leading him to expend time explaining he wouldn’t be beholden to the Holy See rather than talk about what he stood for.

Republicans constantly accusing Democrats of being socialists or Marxists, leaving Democrats and once-in-a-while the press explaining what those terms mean and Democrats aren’t those, rather than talking about policy.

The Trump tweak of this tactic is that he always accuses his opponents of something that he has actually done. This serves the double purpose of:

1. Deflecting attention away from him.
2. Promoting the bogus notion that “Everybody does it!”

My understanding is that while Melania took complete credit for the design, the Rose Garden had been slated for renovation due to ADA requirements, and due to the trees being overgrown. She had some say over certain elements, but the plans had been in the works for some time. THIS IS ALWAYS THE CASE WITH THIS ADMINISTRATION: They take personal credit for things others do. We should have known this 5 years ago.

Many moons ago, there was an experiment that was done in elementary schools where kids who didn’t have the right eye color were blocked from doing things.

If you elect me as your President, I will enact a month-long People of Color Act. Under my administration, people of color would be given more of the benefit of the doubt than white folks, who think they’re G-d’s chosen people and pack heat because they ‘are scared’ of the person of color.

In addition, the act would provide all people of color who are not prohibited from owning firearms a free firearm and 200 rounds of ammunition.

I had heard that as well. The apple trees which I understand had been “planted” by Jackie Kennedy were getting on for 60 years old and well past their best — a lot of folks think trees are perpetual and never get diseased, rot, die, get blown over etc. — and it was probably time for them to be replaced anyway.

As you said people who knew what they were doing were responsible for the structural parts of the reconstruction of the Rose Garden. I expect the First Lady had some input but mostly for the colours and layout effects. Whoever follows the Trumps into the White House (assuming it isn’t another bunch of annoyed Canadians with kerosene and burning torches as in 1812) will redo more stuff. It’s the sort of place that’s a classical example of the Irishman’s favourite shovel, it’s had two new handles and three new blades since he got it.

I remember him my sophomore year of high school. The basketball fan in me knew we were watching one of the finest basketball players to ever play but I had no idea what kind of man he is. He’s also gonna campaign for Biden-Harris. He’s just a natural leader.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) said in a statement that he “fell short of his own standard,” by choosing not to wear a face mask at President Trump’s Republican convention acceptance speech, Axios reports.

The apology came after challenger Cal Cunningham put out this statement: “Tillis apparently sets a different standard for himself. He was captured maskless in Washington Thursday surrounded by nearly 1,000 other people, most of whom were also not wearing masks or social distancing, after posting a photo to Twitter wearing a mask.”

I can believe that. Of course, then it’s Melanoma’s job to explain the changes to people, being that it’s “her” project. She’s lazy and useless, so she didn’t, so now the whole thing is getting a ton of criticism. Too fucking bad.

You reminded me of the time, many years ago, while in the Army, I was invited to a Kentucky Derby styled “Lawn Party”. Authentically held on a lawn.

Mint julep in hand, I was trying to schmooze up a very pretty young lady.

As we talked, I began to realize, that while she seemed attentive and interested in the conversation, she was leaning further and further away from me.

I started to go through a list of what might be offending her; My teeth were freshly brushed; I had recently showered and used deodorant; My dress greens were freshly dry-cleaned; etc.

Then we both realized… that her high heels were sinking into the lawn.

The lawsuit between Butterworth and GE led him to become politically active. He broadcast a radio program in Atlanta on which he opposed the NAACP convention and attacked blacks, non-Christians and Catholics. The show was cancelled after being on the air for only two weeks, and the resulting lawsuit he filed against the radio station ended unsuccessfully. Around 1961, the Georgia offshoot of the Ku Klux Klan, the National Knights of the Ku Klux Klan used recordings narrated by Butterworth to spread its pitch. Butterworth also organized the Defensive Legion of Registered Americans in 1962, and narrated a series of spoken voice recordings for the Christian Voters and Buyers League, promoting anti-Semitism, racism, and a boycott of Kosher products.

Miller’s swift firing, as reported by the New York Times, is the latest sign of just how dysfunctional, chaotic, and self defeating the Trump administration has truly become. It also underscores that decisions in the Trump regime, such as Miller’s hiring, aren’t made based on what’s best for the nation, or even necessarily what’s best for Trump. Instead, decisions are made based on whatever puts a smile on the ever-narcissistic and increasingly fragile Trump’s face on any given day.

The town’s letter said she had not met with officials before her protest, requiring them to hastily come up with security plans.

Gil said she didn’t meet with them in person over coronavirus concerns, but made an offer to meet via Zoom, which wasn’t accepted, and then officials stopped responding to her.

She said she had reached out to Kranjac after getting the bill, but has gotten no response.

Kranjac told NJ Advance Media that protesters’ rights of free speech and assembly were respected, and that Gil was wrong to link affordable housing to her protest.

“As with any privately-sponsored event that takes place in the borough requiring police safety, an invoice was sent to the organizer for police overtime since it would be unfair to require our residents to financially support a private event,” he said.

This has all the smell of a shakedown.

re: #225 A hollow Gandalfian voice says, VOTE, you fools!

Please be so good as to extract the part of that twitter thread where she says trans women are not women and highlight it for me.

She leans on the logical fallacy of appeal to authority. “Here’s two papers by two noteworthy psychiatrists (she says they’re noteworthy so it must be so) saying gender identity is fixed and the NHS are engaging in an “experiment” (gender-affirming surgery is not an experiment) which will have horrible ramifications for the future (think of the children argument).

The first Cambridge psychiatrist she cites calls gender identity a “political agenda” in the paper.

The second Cambridge paper asserts now that gender dysphoria is no longer classified as a mental illness, yet there are plenty of “mental illness comorbitities” involved in gender dysphoria. That second writer also asserts directly in the paper the Heritage Foundation term “gender critical theory” as applied to the paper. That paper also conflates it with the term “conversion therapy” (the claim you can change Teh Geyh).

Famous person who is not a doctor JK Rowling is counting on people to consider her opinion as famous person and not a doctor, while citing two cranks publishing non-peer-reviewed opinion pieces written like they are serious papers, on an open-access blog for Cambridge.

She’s using those two papers to say, “See, I’m not saying there’s no such thing as transwomen or men, these two very serious psychiatrists are.”

She’s counting on people not looking at the papers, or understanding what they wrote was opinion pieces on a blog, not scientific studies. That gives her plausible deniability.

She lied by omission.

This is why it takes an order of magnitude of information to debunk bulkshyte from disingenuous people like JK Rowling.

This is exactly why lawsuits intended to bankrupt municipalities need to occur (and never vote for a general bond).

Voters in those communities will get tired of paying out millions to cover up suppression of rights (such as Joe Arapaio being voted out of office).

The New Jersey ACLU needs to be tagged in that thread.

Hence the “shakedown” part, the city (read: the mayor) is trying to have it both ways in insisting they weren’t part of the planning of the protest but they’re sending her the bill for posting cops because they always charge event organizers for providing “security.” What it sounds like is the mayor and/or the Trump-loving section of the city council ordered the cops to mind the protest to prevent possible violence, and now are trying to pass the cost of their action on so they don’t have to answer to voters for why $2,500 is suddenly missing from the budget.

From WIKI:

Damn, things really haven’t changed that much, have they?

Question would be be why Wisconsin would need Alabama Guard help with a roster of 10,000 Wisconsin Army and Air Guardsman in the state…unless they are on active duty overseas.

You guys see this?

He’s gonna go on his ass before the election. His balance is going.

Yeah, and if he does, he’ll probably just claim that:
1. It was “Fake News”/Photoshopped.
2. It happened, but he was pushed by (Antifa, BLM, radical leftists, Joe Biden, Sasha Obama; take your pick…)
3. Bitch loudly and frequently about how “nasty” his critics are for failing to sympathize with a “victim of violence”.
4. Orate for an hour about how in “Joe Biden’s America”, hapless old men are going to be pushed to the ground and mocked by jeering leftist mobs….

I said: Please be so good as to show me where she says trans women are not women. You can’t, because she doesn’t.

With this reply, you demonstrate that you know as much about the actual issue that started this as all the other ideologues and twitter trolls who latched on to it. That is to say, nothing.

In defense of facts, and for people who might prefer not to feel guilty about liking Harry Potter — since, in fact, they don’t need to — I will repeat my original comment every time someone brings up Rowling’s alleged opinion. But this really is my last word on the matter.

And as I pointed out, she’s going for plausible deniability. Did you read the studies opinion pieces? I did.

I mean really, one of the psychiatrists compares gender-affirming surgery and hormones to Teh Geyh conversion therapy.

Is she one of those “retweets do not mean endorsements” folks? She has a history of doing this.

A Complete Breakdown of the J.K. Rowling Transgender-Comments Controversy (Glamour Magazine, with a large portion of her tweets over the years, and swift condemnations of them by the actors in her movies, trans rights activists, &c.)

Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, thrice is enemy action.

She doesn’t get to escape responsibility like a common Donald Trump because she retweets someone and writes, “I’m not saying this, but these other people over here are saying this.”

private insurance in the USA is overpriced and doesn’t cover shit

It wouldn’t be obscenely profitable if it did either of those things.

Nothing gets done in America unless a rich person gets richer, and often they get richer doing nothing.

I had to do this as a picture:

And you could argue the semantics, which is what she’s doing, but from what I’ve seen, quite a few trans people felt like she was saying they weren’t women.

…and still none of you have bothered to go to the sources of the argument instead of following the twitter storm. Sad.

Crap. I hope it’s all over. I have to head down that way to pick up my son from a “distancing” get together with some high school band friends.

I taped a whole bunch of episodes of Law and Order: SVU recently so that I’d have something to watch during the RNC.

Still working on them.
