LYRICS:
High above, you’ll find me here
Circling far to not be near
It feels like I can only glide so long
Before the will to stay my dive is gone

If I’m on the way down
If you love me at all
Leave me right where I fall

I’m a lone, lonely bird
A king in the desert, a spy in the herd
Looking down there’s no use looking back
The day I drop I’ll go without a word

If I’m on the way down
If you love me at all
Leave me right where I fall

…Instead of AOC debating Greene, how about Katie Porter whiteboards Greene instead?…

No one with any credibility should appear on the same platform as this grifting, treasonous fabulist. You cannot expect a legitimate debate with someone who is shameless, lacks any credentials or knowledge, and refutes your arguments by lies that have no substance. People like Greene crave a public forum where a serious opponent only raises her credibility while reducing that of anyone who engages her. The only person to whom this admonition does not apply would be someone who is challenging her for her seat; then, unfortunately, it is necessary to appear with her.

This. AOC has ideas, some better than others. MTG just produces lying word-vomit.

A debate between ideas and lying word-vomit elevates the word-vomit to the status of ‘ideas’.

Democrats are gun-shy because of the infamous media both sideism of the conflict between Democratic efforts to address our problems against Republican obstructionism; the media should be attacking Republicans everywhere for their refusal to accept the Biden victory, for their efforts to disenfranchise people of color everywhere, and their opposition to the bills to protect voting rights. Instead they treat Republicans as legitimate politicians, instead of ostracizing every one of them for their failure to work with Democrats to solve our nation’s problems.

One thing I’d add to this is what I refer to as “Disney’s Pirates Problem”.

First Disney makes Pirates of the Caribbean ride. In 1967.
It has some problematic things in it but… they are pirates. They are supposed to be problematic to some degree. They aren’t heroes.

Then Disney decides to make a movie based (sort of) on the ride.

Disney makes the pirates the “good-ish guys” in the flick.

Disney starts to put references to the movie in the ride.

The ride starts to become about the movie, rather than the other way around.

Can’t have the pirates be the heroes but also… pirates. You can’t stick an animatronic Jack Sparrow in the middle of pirates doing pirate things while burning a Spanish port to the ground. So Disney has to start removing problematic things.

They created their own problem. If they had stuck with a “These people aren’t the heroes” stance the whole time, maybe they could have left the damn ride alone or removed less, but they shot themselves in the foot.

Still even with all the above, for every problematic thing they removed, I’m sure someone can find a dozen more still there, and I bet you almost *everyone* who bitches about the ride being “woke” (I hate I have to use that word) loves those damn movies too.

More fundamentally, that newspaper opinion piece lauds Walt Disney while supposedly defending some sort of traditional American values.

Thing is, Walt (besides a bit of a bad boss) created material that was explicitly non-Christian. His works fell so far outside of the conservative American church scene that it used to be that Disney was criticized by fundamentalists.

Here’s an article in the same newspaper as that guy lamenting “wokeness” that points out the non-Christian nature of Disney:

IN WALT’S WORLD, NO CHURCHES ON MAIN STREET OR ON SCREEN

“There is an anathema against the New Testament in the Disney films,” said the Rev. Lou Sheldon, head of the Traditional Values Coalition in Anaheim, Calif. “They’re not fair to what the Christian message is of life, death and eternal life.”

Yeah that’s mine too. (I’ve only seen parts of the movies) Now it’s just a bunch of things happening. It’s not something I lose sleep over though, and before COVID put an end to annual passes, I went on the ride every time I went to the park unless it was broke down.

Just IMO the best explanation of why this is all a thing. Whether or not it real pirates doing real pirate things should have been considered family friendly even in 1967… well that’s a whole different story.

We were hoping for an inch or two of rain today. We got .35 inches in South Austin, around .7 downtown. This summer is looking to be hot, dry, and crop evil.

And the dry line looks like a crescent from Central Texas through NM and AZ, through central and west CA and straight up to Canada via OR, WA, and ID.

I have a feeling this is going to be a grim, grim fire season.

I remain uneasy about the J&J vaccine; they advertise the problem as 15 severe adverse reactions out of about 8 million vaccinations (original report 6 out of 7 million) but that isn’t the correct comparison, given the demographics of those who suffered this reaction. All were women and 13 were less than age 50 — and so you have to compare this to the total number of women in that age range who received the vaccine. It is misleading to continue to describe it as x out of total vaccinations; it significantly understates the risk of blood clots among younger women.

That’s … odd. I wonder if they were on oral contraceptives or hormone replacement for menopause? That can increase clotting potential in women. It would be instructive to know if they were able to factor that out.

It appears that the blood clots are occurring among women who are of an age that they can menstruate. On the other hand, women who take Birth Control Pills, also in the same age group of the J&J clotters, suffer blood clots several orders of magnitude more than than those who receive the vaccine.

That’s all I have to say. This a hot potato, though it shouldn’t be, and I’m not touching it.

Hopefully they investigated these cases very carefully to identify any other characteristics that may have contributed to these reactions. Given there are other effective vaccine choices, if I were a young woman, I would choose Pfizer or Moderna. The one silver lining is that they have identified the proper way to treat these clots and so reduce the danger to those who experience them; the standard treatment exacerbates the condition and leads to less favorable outcomes.

Snippits from an interesting Scientific American article:

What are the symptoms of these blood clots in people who have had the Johnson & Johnson vaccine?

They are different than some of the symptoms people experience right after getting their vaccination, such as fatigue, soreness at the injection site or joint aches. These sorts of things are common, they appear shortly after the vaccination, and they usually go away after about three to five days. The symptoms related to the blood clots tend to appear about a week or two after the vaccination and then continue to worsen. A headache that won’t go away is one symptom. Now, if you’ve just exerted yourself by going for a run or gardening in the sun on a hot day, you might have a headache, fatigue, leg or abdomen pain, or shortness of breath, but if you sit in a cool spot and drink some water, these will probably go away. But if you are experiencing these symptoms, and they continue to get worse despite the fact that you’re doing things that would normally make you feel better, that would be more concerning.

How are these blood clots different from other blood clots?

Blood clots are formed by platelets, which bind together to form a clot, and typically a lot of them are needed to do that. The clots seen with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine formed even in patients who had low platelet counts in their bloodstream. That combination is unusual. Typically, when you have really low platelet counts—a condition called thrombocytopenia—you actually have problems with being able to form clots, and you can develop ongoing bleeding that is hard to stop. Furthermore, we’re seeing this phenomenon of clots forming in serious places such as the brain, the lungs, the legs or the abdomen, despite the fact that platelet counts are really low. That’s a very unique phenomenon. The closest thing we’ve seen is a rare condition called heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). [Editor’s note: HIT Is a condition in which the anticoagulant medication heparin lowers platelet counts. It increases the risk that blood clots will develop—a condition known as heparin-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia, or HITT.] We have also seen a similar type of phenomenon with the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Nebraska rejects a bill to call an Article V convention of the states.

The bill is stuck in the Government, Military, and Veterans Affairs Committee. The sponsor of the bill was unable to get it voted out of the committee.

Republicans in the Unicameral were calling the national debt the greatest threat to national security, overreach of federal regulations, and no term limits in Washington. Senators Adam Morfeld of Lincoln and Megan Hunt of Omaha led the charge against the bill, noting what happened with the Articles of Confederation.

But opponents, including Sen. Adam Morfeld of Lincoln, raised concerns about whether such a convention could be controlled. Morfeld pointed to the convention called to propose changes to the country’s original Articles of Confederation, saying that group ended up proposing a whole new constitution.

“There are no guardrails and there are no guidelines for this,” he said, noting that the people contacting his office have been overwhelmingly against the proposed convention.

Sen. Megan Hunt of Omaha argued that a convention of states would become a target for special interests seeking to gain advantage. She also questioned how well a convention would work in the current politically polarized environment.

Montana governor signs bill allowing residents to challenge regulations on religious grounds (The Hill)

Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte (R) signed legislation into law on Thursday that allows individuals to challenge government regulations that infringe on their religious beliefs.

The bill, dubbed the “Montana Religious Freedom Restoration Act,” requires the government to present a compelling reason to violate an individual’s freedom of religion, and to achieve its goals in the least restrictive method possible.

Many Christian churches argue that doesn’t exist.

If a court has to get involved in what constitutes a “real religion,” then religious freedom is out the window.

Petition to the House of Commons in Parliament assembled
Whereas:

Atheists are persecuted in several countries both by government and the public;
Atheist persecution can result in serious injury, imprisonment, or death at the hands of family members, street mobs, or governments;
Some countries, including Saudi Arabia, label all atheists as terrorists: this alone should not disqualify them for refugee status;
The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled several times that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the right to freedom from religion as much as the right to freedom of religion, a standard which applies to refugees as well as citizens;
Atheists are denied access to the Less Complex Claims Policy of Canada because they are excluded from the list of those who qualify, all of whom are members of a religion; and
This is an urgent matter because the lives of several atheists are currently in danger while awaiting their refugee hearings, which would be avoided if atheists were included in the less complex claims process.

We, the undersigned, residents of Canada, call upon the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship to change the policy regarding Less Complex Claims to include atheists in the list of people eligible for the status, so that they will be treated equally with those people belonging to the religions currently listed in the Less Complex Claims policy.

One thing that has bothered me about the current trend of liberals and progressives cheering on the Church of Satan/Satanic Temple in taking on Evangelical bullshit, is the fact that CoS is basically Ayn Rand’s Objectivism turned into a quasi-religion and using the term “Satanism” in order to be Edgelords and piss off Christians.

Now, more than ever, good and tired people need to cultivate community, to stay connected to our tribes of affinity, and to carry one another through the fatigue when it comes.

At the beginning of the MAGA scourge a group of neighbors started to actively promote community engagement. We had Happy Hours and formed a Welcome committee to engage new neighbors. It helped us get through those years, plus really came in handy during CV-19.

The Disney debate reminds me of similar ones surrounding major league sports or country music. They are built around what are seen as “positive” values: family, community, fair play, pride in accomplishment, striving to excel.

That is part of their massive popular appeal and part of what makes them such a lucrative market.

But in the end, Disney, Major League Sports and commercial country are all businesses, and although they are happy to embrace and co-opt those “American” values, they are all about generating profit from ticket sales, licensing, sponsorships, film rights, CD and streaming revenue, etc…

While much of the country has embraced the rapid pace of COVID-19 vaccinations as a sign that a return to normal life is just around the corner, one segment of the population has been ginning up fears that mass inoculation is actually an existential threat to the future of the human race.

This long-simmering idea, which could not only help to steer some people away from vaccines but also fan the flames of already volatile cultural divisions and conflicts, came into stark focus in mid-March, when a meme spread across pandemic denialist Telegram channels, featuring a large image of two sheep fucking, and a block of text that reads: “DO NOT BREED WITH SHEEP.”

“People who are vaccinated will have modified DNA,” it continues. “No one discusses that DNA is passed onto the next generation. The risk that your children will marry into other cultures is possibly now shadowed by the fact that your children may marry into a COVID vaxed gene group potentially shortening their lives and that of others.”

This is just Political Performance Art: the canvas is public cluelessness about genetics, vaccinations and epidemiology.

The paints are fear and distrust of science brought about by bad TV and movie science fiction plots.

Add to that religious and other social prejudices and you can paint any picture and make it seem as real as a CGI Godzilla in the eyes of much of the public.

Many Christian churches argue that doesn’t exist.

If a court has to get involved in what constitutes a “real religion,” then religious freedom is out the window.

I suppose I could start the First Church of Defenestration, the tenets of which are to yeet those who step on other people’s rights out fifth-storey windows.

I guess use them when it’s helpful and convenient, but be mindful of the fact that the core is just more Ayn Rand bullshit viewed from a different angle.

That was explained to me by no one less than Anton LaVey himself back in the mid-1990s. I met him at a bookstore in Portland, Oregon.

The very racist high school in Jacksonville my son graduated from is getting sued.

Black Lives Matter: Teacher disciplined for displaying BLM flag sues Florida school district for discriminatory treatment (Southern Poverty Law Center, April 16)

This is more than about the flag though. One might suggest that the undercurrent of this teacher’s treatment is that of a so-called “race traitor.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and the private employment law firm Scott • Wagner and Associates filed suit in federal court today on behalf of a Florida high school teacher who was removed from her classroom and reassigned to administrative duties in retaliation for displaying a Black Lives Matter (BLM) flag over the objection of school administrators.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, claims that officials at Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) violated her First Amendment rights and other constitutional and statutory protections because of her advocacy on behalf of Black students.

Amy Donofrio is a white teacher at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, a school where about 70% of students are Black.

“I hope this case will set a needed precedent,” Donofrio said. “Teachers should not be punished for supporting their students’ humanity. Our students matter, and as educators, we will no longer tolerate them being systemically damaged, silenced, and failed. To our Black students, we see you, we stand with you, and you matter.”

The Omaha Police Department said Friday that threats that had come in to various locations around the city weren’t credible and had been called in from outside Nebraska.

Police said they began receiving reports of phone calls around 8:30 a.m. “threatening violent acts” at various spots around the city.

In downtown Omaha, Union Pacific employees evacuated the company’s headquarters building at 14th and Douglas Streets after someone called in a threat.

“We received information this morning that we’re taking seriously,” said Robynn Tysver, a U.P. spokeswoman. “We’ve cleared the building and we’ve asked employees to go home for the day.”

About 100 Union Pacific workers were seen leaving the building shortly before 9 a.m.

Schools in the Omaha area also received threats.

Ed Bennett, the principal of Central High School, sent an email to families noting that school administrators learned of “a threatening message directed toward several schools, including Central High School, and private businesses across the Omaha metro.” Police were contacted, Bennett noted, but police “do not believe the threat was credible.”

One could be forgiven for not having heard about a Chilean documentary filmed in a nursing home, but it’s become something of a phenomenon based on its 2020 premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, after which Indiewire called it “the most heartwarming spy movie ever made.” It picked up nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards, Goya Awards and was named to the National Board of Review’s list of top five foreign language films, then was broadcast on PBS in January before coming to Hulu (and for rent on Amazon Prime Video). And it’s got a good chance at winning the 2021 Academy Award for best documentary.

They’re not the only ones either. A group known as CSOP wants an Article V convention to reduce federal spending, which would slash social programmes (defence is never mentioned in slashing budgets).

ALEC itself wants to remove laws protecting LGBT rights.

Lefties such as TYT at one time called for a convention but have backed away.

If rich libertarians got their hands on the levers of a convention, they could use the existing ratification structure (thirty-four of the least populous states) to impose anything from a feudal state, imposition of debt or chattel slavery, exemption of the rich from all taxes, strip women of all rights, pretty much anything they want.

Back when it was the Soviet Union and even today in its diminished state, Russia has the resources and the skills but somehow it never succeeded in transforming itself into an industrial powerhouse because it always lacked the leadership that allowed it to focus on achieving its goals by enriching its people, not just the ruling class, but its average citizens. They have failed on competing in the modern world but they retain the power to bring others down and they were succeeding in damaging us by getting their asset elected president. We came close to losing it all — and that danger remains give continued Republican allegiance to Trump and the party’s full throated efforts to destroy our democracy, with the rabid support of their base.

BRIEFING ROOM
Statement by President Joe Biden on Armenian Remembrance Day
APRIL 24, 2021 • STATEMENTS AND RELEASES
Each year on this day, we remember the lives of all those who died in the Ottoman-era Armenian genocide and recommit ourselves to preventing such an atrocity from ever again occurring. Beginning on April 24, 1915, with the arrest of Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Constantinople by Ottoman authorities, one and a half million Armenians were deported, massacred, or marched to their deaths in a campaign of extermination. We honor the victims of the Meds Yeghern so that the horrors of what happened are never lost to history. And we remember so that we remain ever-vigilant against the corrosive influence of hate in all its forms.

Of those who survived, most were forced to find new homes and new lives around the world, including in the United States. With strength and resilience, the Armenian people survived and rebuilt their community. Over the decades Armenian immigrants have enriched the United States in countless ways, but they have never forgotten the tragic history that brought so many of their ancestors to our shores. We honor their story. We see that pain. We affirm the history. We do this not to cast blame but to ensure that what happened is never repeated.

Today, as we mourn what was lost, let us also turn our eyes to the future—toward the world that we wish to build for our children. A world unstained by the daily evils of bigotry and intolerance, where human rights are respected, and where all people are able to pursue their lives in dignity and security. Let us renew our shared resolve to prevent future atrocities from occurring anywhere in the world. And let us pursue healing and reconciliation for all the people of the world.

The American people honor all those Armenians who perished in the genocide that began 106 years ago today.

re: #195 O say, does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave..

Wasn’t there some talk earlier in the week that the White House was “reconsidering” recognizing the Armenian genocide? As if the compassionate and intelligent Joe Biden could actually do that.

All the news I saw was to the effect that he was going to recognize the Armenian Genocide. It was just that it wasn’t going to be official until it actually happened this morning.

A lot of previous presidents have considered acknowledging it, but Turkey got their panties in a bunch so we didn’t.

We no longer care what Turkey thinks.

Update on my March 3 post about Starlink.

Received my Starlink equipment today ($500 + $100/mo).

The dish has it’s own stand and currently is perched atop the horse trailer. Setup takes at 5 minutes. There is one power cord and the cord (cat-6) that runs to the dish. Connect the Starlink app on your phone to the WIFI receiver and you are up as soon as the dish aligns to find a satellite. I was impressed with the packaging and equipment. I connected my Google WIFI to the router without issue.

For me west of St. Louis (rural), I get download speeds from 5-50Mpbs with 50-100ms of latency. The only issue I see is that service drops out occasionally due to satellite availability. That could kill my Teams calls…I’ll find out tomorrow.

I cannot yet call it a win yet….but very promising.

I tired of waiting for Starlink to ship a mounting bracket so I used some duck tape to tighten the joint and put it on the old sat. dish roof mount. That eliminated the tree obstructions. I did have it on top of the horse trailer but that was partially obstructed.

I’m now calling it a big win and cancelling my existing ISP. I can attend online meetings without fear of connection drops (they are rare now). Averaging 12-150 Mbps down (10+ up) on speed tests. Snow and ice are no trouble as the dish heats itself as needed to melt it away.

Some enterprising person created a website (starlink.sx) to plot all the Starlink satellites and show realtime how your dish connects and tracks multiple satellites. It is really interesting to watch for a while.

I’m a happy internet camper now.
