Sheer Awesomeness: Lake Street Dive’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

Music • Views: 17,301

YouTube

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Josh Rogosin | April 27, 2021
Lake Street Dive filmed its Tiny Desk (home) concert where the band is most at home: on stage at the “biggest little venue in NYC,” Pete’s Candy Store. All five band members managed to squeeze onto a stage no larger than the actual Tiny Desk to shine a spotlight on the Save Our Stages Act. Congress passed the $15 billion grant program last December as part of the $900 billion coronavirus relief bill. In the middle of the home concert, bassist Bridget Kearney recalls driving to the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn for a gig at Pete’s, then driving back to Boston the very same night, long before they ever sold out Radio City Music Hall on the other side of the East River.

It’s hard to believe the band has released seven studio albums. Its latest, Obviously, provided the setlist for this intimate performance and prominently features the newest member and co-songwriter, keyboard and vocalist Akie Bermiss. Hopefully we’ll all be packed into tight venues again soon, adding the thunderous applause we’re all yearning to contribute. Until then, we’ll just have to settle for clapping at our screens.

SET LIST
• “Hypotheticals”
• “Same Old News”
• “Anymore”
• “Making Do”

MUSICIANS
• Rachael Price: vocals
• Bridget Kearney: bass
• Akie Bermiss: keyboards, vocals

“…
WHAT’S NEXT

We know you have many questions about the Save Our Stages Act and how it will be administered. NIVA has assembled the Implementation Task Force and is working with the Small Business Administration as they promulgate regulations - we are working hard to make sure that NIVA members receive the help they need via this program. We seek to ensure the emergency relief is dispersed as Congress intended, that the instructions and process to apply for grants ensure that the process is implemented accurately, fairly and as expediently as possible.

Since it could take many weeks, even months for the funding to flow, the NIVA Emergency Relief Fund, with The Giving Back Fund as its 501(c)3 fiscal sponsor, continues to raise money to assist the venues at greatest risk of permanently going under as we wait for the grants to be issued. Anyone wishing to donate can do so below.”

It just crossed my feed that earlier today, DHS Secretary Mayorkas extended the Real ID deadline to May 3, 2023.

Seriously, we should repeal the legislation and scrap it. It was a xenophobic overreaction to 9/11 and anti illegal immigration hysteria.

If all you have against the Biden administration is bullshit stories about banning beef and a book that Harris wrote but was donated by someone, it’s a clear indication that you DON’T HAVE JACK SHIT and that the majority of the public approves of this President.

When I lost my husband, it was having close family that made all the difference in handling his death, but she doesn’t have any family that she can talk to, does she? I also joined a bereavement group and made close friends with strangers who all suffered the same loss — hopefully someone can reach her and help her through this crisis.

Every day seems to bring yet more proof that the press simply can’t handle not having Trump in the White House anymore. 4 years of reporting on the political equivalent of a Tijuana donkey show was so easy that they hardly had to do any work, they just sat next to their cellphone and waited either for another “leak” or another spastic tweeting session to kick off.

Reporting about a competent old white guy in the White House for four years looks like it’s turning into their worst fucking nightmare.

A black man and white woman are suing the Papillion (suburb of Omaha) police department for alleged violations of their civil rights. They are being supported by the ACLU.

Couple files lawsuit against three Papillion police officers regarding 2019 traffic stop (Omaha World-Herald)

A couple has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against three Papillion police officers regarding a 2019 traffic stop.

Jason Storrs and Amber Smith, represented by the ACLU of Nebraska, allege that the stop violated their rights in multiple ways, citing unlawful detention, excessive force and retaliation against the protected activity of filming police.

According to a complaint filed in federal court Tuesday, Storrs was driving Smith home from Smith’s work at Shadow Lake Towne Center about 7 p.m. on Dec. 29, 2019, when Papillion police officers stopped the couple’s vehicle and ordered them out of the car.

Papillion police had recently responded to reports of a shoplifting at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Shadow Lake Towne Center, located at 7775 Olson Drive. According to the Papillion Police Department, Storrs’ vehicle matched the suspect vehicle description and was pulled over near 66th Street and Highway 370.

They did not match the description of shoplifters given to the police, four Black women in a black car. The two were in a silver BMW.

CHEYENNE - The Wyoming Department of Health announced Tuesday that thousands of state residents had their personal information, including names, addresses and dates of birth, exposed through an online server containing COVID-19, influenza and breath alcohol test results. Department officials emphasized that the breached data did not include any Social Security numbers or banking, financial or health insurance information.

In early March, department officials became aware of a breach involving residents’ protected information, in which an official in the department’s Public Health Division inappropriately handled the health information of 164,021 Wyoming residents, or more than a quarter of the state’s overall population, starting as early as Nov. 5, 2020.

Back when my mother was in college, she bought for my sister and me a Pong game when it first came out.

There was moral outrage about Pong occupying children’s time, ruining their eyesight, and if I’d been old enough at the time, there were probably newspaper articles claiming Pong would lead to mass shootings.

For my generation is was Doom and than Grand Theft Auto that were going to lead to the downfall of civilized society, so said Jack Thompson.

Even if that wasn’t the case, the connection between games (video or otherwise) and violence is nonexistent. People have been trying to blame them for all ills in society almost the entire time I’ve been alive. It’s always been bunk and studies have confirmed this over and over again. Same with violent movies and same with music. The party of “personal responsibility” is always trying to shift blame for everything.

WASHINGTON - A U.S. ship in the North Arabian Sea resorted to firing warnings shots to get three Iranian attack craft to back off following a close encounter in international waters.

The U.S. 5th Fleet issued a statement Tuesday accusing the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) boats of failing to heed radio warnings and other attempts to hail them, while coming within 62 meters of the USS Firebolt, a navy patrol ship, and the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Baranoff.

The statement said the two U.S. ships were conducting routine security operations when the armed Iranian boats came “unnecessarily close” and “increased the risk of miscalculation and/or collision” during the encounter late Monday.

After several failed attempts to communicate with the Iranian boats, the crew of the USS Firebolt fired warning shots, at which point the Iranian boats pulled back.

The J&J shot I received, I didn’t feel the needle itself so much, but the injection did cause some mild discomfort. However, I have a low tolerance for pain, so take that with a grain of salt. It did take several days for the sore arm to fade, and I got a case of the chills the next day which thankfully faded by the second day after. Still having trouble connecting to 5G; I’m starting to wonder if it’s just my location out here in the sticks.

I am grateful every day that I left the Republican party and conservative America.

That’s all.

There was a time when I would at least consider GOP candidates, I would have voted for McCain in 2000 had he won the nomination and would have supported Romney for governor had I lived in Massachusetts at the time.

Heck, I remember admiring Chris Christie for his bipartisan work with Obama on Sandy aid and standing up with very clear and brusque language to people who criticized his choice of a Muslim judge.

But that was before the GOP became the Tea Party and then the Trump Party and then the QAnon Party.

It really isn’t. American conservatives are addicted to hate. The hate machine remains incredibly powerful - see just how much Joe Biden, a relatively milquetoast old white guy who never had a word said against him while was VP for 8 years, is hated now across the nation. The hate machine nearly overthrew the government of the United States. Let that sink in. They very nearly successfully had a coup, first by trying to declare elections invalid, then by violence. I don’t think we realise just how close it was to succeeding on multiple occasions. And all of it was ginned up from nothing - just sheer, unthinking, unbridled hate.

Those who run the hate machine have learned their lesson - specifically, that there are no consequences and that there are no limits to what they can incite. What is coming in the next couple of election cycles is going to be unbelievably awful.

He has a remarkable 96% approval rating among Democrats, the highest level same party approval of any recent President after 100 days, but only 11% approval from Republicans. MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell to Appear on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Despite Backlash (The Hollywood Reporter)

More at the link

MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell is scheduled to appear as a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Wednesday evening, despite an online backlash.

On Tuesday, a letter was posted to the website Common Cause, the political watchdog group, addressed to host Jimmy Kimmel and the production team of the ABC series. The letter noted that Lindell has been “a leading voice in spreading lies and disinformation regarding the 2020 election results, including producing several videos claiming that the 2020 elections were hacked.”

The letter went on to say, “Lindell’s work in pushing election disinformation has already had significant consequences for our nation, including the violent insurrection on January 6th at the U.S. Capitol that led to at least five people losing their lives. Lindell’s debunked conspiracy theories are also rooted in racism and white supremacy. The disinformation he is trying to sell is part of a larger narrative that essentially wants to throw out millions of votes from cities where people of color make up a majority or significant portion of the voting population, including Detroit, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Las Vegas.”

But the Republican Party also represents a smaller percentage of Americans right now than before. We’ve got the concentrated, pulp-in version of a party.

True, but GOP leaning independents still think the same way, and still believe right-wing propaganda. This is why Biden’s approval rating after 100 days is lower than any recent President other than TFG, despite nearly unanimous approval from Democrats.

Every single election for the next 20 years has to be thought of as the last election ever in this country if Republicans gain control.

For blacks, latinos and women’s rights this is an existential crisis that even now I’m not sure enough people understand. This is not “let’s sit out this election, it’s a midterm” normalcy. The right wing in this country wants to overthrow democracy itself. We are on the brink of becoming 50% Putin’s Russia/50% 1970’s South Africa.

It is critical that Democratic voters understand that we are still in an existential crisis even though TFG is out of office. I am tentatively optimistic, in part because the GQP is becoming increasingly reliant on voters without a college education, who may not turn out if TFG is not on the ballot.

US has been sitting on a stockpile of Astra Zeneca vaccines that have not yet been approved for distribution in the US. Sending those doses to India or other countries is a good use of those doses and doesn’t infringe on our ability to get our own nation vaccinated.

AZ vaccine has been approved elsewhere. Getting India materials to make more vaccines is essential. Getting India the gear to help make more oxygen or to provide ventilators and other key gear is essential.

Jennifer Rubin

Lack of presidential broadcasting does not mean the administration is failing to communicate with the public. To the contrary, with thrice weekly covid-19 task force briefings, daily White House news briefings (often with a top administration official) and a blizzard of fact sheets, there is no shortage of information about the policies Biden is pursuing. What is striking is that this is a president unwilling to play pundit, media critic or partisan campaigner (for now).

The administration benefits in keeping the focus on substance when Republicans have so little substance to offer. Reporters and pundits regularly bemoan the sparseness of Biden’s interactions with the media, but that is not governing; that is performance art for a media and political culture used to feeding off constant bickering over what the president said, what he meant, who he allegedly offended and the hyperfocus on “process.”

Asked about passing the infrastructure package as a reconciliation bill, Klain gave the sports cliche that the administration focuses on “one game at a time.” He explained, Biden’s legislative strategy is to take things “to do as much as we can on a bipartisan basis through regular order.” No venom at Republicans. No despair that the GOP is largely still in the thrall of the MAGA radicals.

I’m going with Manchin being the way Biden plays the GOP against itself. He can use Manchin to try and show bipartisanship, but in the end Manchin will vote with the President’s agenda. It’s probably a loose coordination, knowing that Manchin needs to appear more conservative to keep his seat, but it can be infuriating for other more liberal Democrats that he’s not on board with ending the filibuster.

An exec gets in his/her car or calls a cab/Uber. Drives/rides directly to the doctors appt. Goes in at required time. Leaves, gets into car/Uber, drives/rides back to work.

Low wage workers (usually) leave work (hopefully near the time a bus will be coming by close enough, going close to where they need to go). Get on the bus that will stop dozens of times on the way (again hopefully close) to where they are going or have to get a transfer to another bus. Finally get to their destination, go in for their appointment. Then start the whole travel process back to work. So the hour and a half for the exec usually takes 4- 5 hours (or more) for the wage worker.

From the article

“I’m sorry, this is the last question I’ll take and I’ll really get in trouble,” the president joked during a press conference yesterday before answering a question about the United States providing aid to India in the wake of its brutal second wave of Covid-19. The president chose to take the question after he had already begun to walk away from the podium.

“Can we analyze why he said that?” co-host Ainsley Earhardt said.

Here is my in-depth analysis. The Fox viewers are gullible idiots and you are just a regular idiot.

re: #133 No Malarkey!

The power of right-wing propaganda can be shown by the splits in Biden’s approval rating. He has a remarkable 96% approval rating among Democrats, the highest level same party approval of any recent President after 100 days, but only 11% approval from Republicans. Only Trump’s 9% from Democrats in 2017 was worst. From fivethirtyeight.com. What do they hear about Biden from Fox News? He stole the election, he is corrupt, he opened the border to replace them with immigrants, he’s banning beef, etc.

This leaves out the part where people are leaving the party in droves because they can’t tolerate its “policies” anymore. (In CA, they’ve become a cluster of people who can’t do anything but obstruct others and can’t win statewide elections.) On the national scene they remain dangerous — for a while longer — but the path they’re on leads to irrelevance.

electoral-vote.com’s take on quaid this AM

Quaid was once of the finest actors in Hollywood, capable of handling comic roles (National Lampoon’s Vacation, Kingpin) and dramatic roles (Brokeback Mountain, The Last Detail) with equal ease. These days, he’s so many cards short of a full deck that he’d have trouble making it through a round of blackjack. He believes that he and his wife are being stalked by the “Star Whackers,” an alleged cabal that is supposedly responsible for the deaths of Heath Ledger, Chris Penn, and David Carradine, and is now hot on the trail of Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, Lindsay Lohan, and the Quaids. He’s also a big Trump supporter, by the way.

Panhandle Public Health District has dropped the risk of Covid-19 here to the bottom of “moderate.” The last reported cases were on April 18 (twenty-four).

Two people are in hospital (up from none).

Women and girls are still two-thirds of cases.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is available here now after the state removed the restrictions, adding to the Moderna vaccine here.

Half the towns are at “low” or “no” risk now.

The weekly positivity rate is down to 7.9%.

How justice system is totally screwed up.

Cop lies under oath and his testimony results in convictions where defendants spend years and decades in prison.

For perjury and evidence tampering, the cop will get a year in prison.

We need to pass a law that says that if a cop or prosecutor uses fraud or perjury or etc to get a conviction, they have to sit out the remainder of the false sentence. Including if it was a capitol offence.

At least the courts seems hesitant to go along with that shit show. From what limited media access has been allowed reporters have noted black and blue pens near ballots where there should only be red pens. While the courts will find no means to overturn a certified election, this will fuel the right wing “stolen election” fever dreams.

I did say they were dangerous. But with about half of the gang that tried to storm the Capitol already under indictment, I have my doubts about their ground forces — they’re learning that these things have consequences. (Not to mention that the Capitol police, vastly outnumbered and outgunned, were able to hold those cosplay soldiers off for long enough to save the day. Henceforth they’ll be forewarned.)

Also, it’s not true about Biden’s approval ratings, W. was only a smidge higher, and Clinton was lower.

The right wing hate machine is predicated, primarily, on what I call “inappropriate generalization”. They take a small thing, and then they say, “Well, if it happened here, it must have happened elsewhere.” Then they keep using that same rationale to keep expanding the scope of whatever evil thing it is until it becomes the ultimate vast left-wing conspiracy. And the small thing may not even be true in the first place; see, e.g., the blowup of the Daily Fail’s ZOMG JOE’S GONNA TAKE YOUR HAMBURGERS derpitude.

Apollo 11 astronaut Michael Collins has died at age 90. Only Buzz is left now.

‘Forgotten Astronaut’ Michael Collins Dies

An astronaut who flew on one of the most famous space missions of all time has died. Michael Collins, 90, was part of the three-member crew on Apollo 11, the first lunar landing mission in 1969. Unlike Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, he never walked on the moon. Collins stayed behind and piloted the command module as it circled above. Because of that, Collins is often called the ‘forgotten astronaut’.

In 1969, President Nixon (right) greets the Apollo 11 astronauts in quarantine after their mission to the moon. The Apollo 11 crew from left are Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin.
AP
Collins had been battling cancer. In a statement released by his family, “He spent his final days peacefully, with his family by his side. Mike always faced the challenges of life with grace and humility, and faced this, his final challenge in the same way.”

Why do elephants paint their toenails red?
So they can hide in cherry trees.

That’s not how I heard it in my elementary school playground back in the 60’s.

re: #215 Eventual Carrion

Plus, if the doctor is late for the appointment. (Happens to me a lot that I wait an extra 30 to 60 minutes because the doctor is late themselves.) And that can throw off the whole schedule for catching transportation, etc. getting back.

And the moment that “long lunch” turns into getting back to work at 3pm the chance of getting called onto the carpet and potentially fired looms larger. The exec doesn’t have to worry about that either in most cases.

It isn’t exactly a surprise at this point. He’s had ample opportunity, not to mention practical experience, to get rid of literally anything incriminating. For kicks, he probably planted Hunter Biden info from Q groups in his stuffs “to own the libs.”

This is so stupid. Why not just hand him an eraser and a 6 month headsup?

I’m going to paraphrase what Giuliani and the GOP used to say to the black community when they complained abput being subjected to the unconstitutional Stop and Frisk law: “If you didn’t do anything wrong what are you worried about?”

re: #171 No Malarkey!

It is critical that Democratic voters understand that we are still in an existential crisis even though TFG is out of office. I am tentatively optimistic, in part because the GQP is becoming increasingly reliant on voters without a college education, who may not turn out if TFG is not on the ballot.

Let’s not delude ourselves that Trump supporters are the uneducated working class whites; there are plenty of college graduates who people this cult and deprogramming them requires an individual intersession — and even then, it can be a challenge to purge them of their confidence in their white supremacy as they blithely follow TC in claiming that there is no such thing. The only racists are those who are anti-racist, don’t you know?

LMAO Rudy’s electronic devices seized in a warrant.

*laughing* Rudy considered himself a cybersecurity expert.

Odds are, he’s got no clue how the Internet works, backups to the cloud work, or that any attempts to delete incriminating messages, emails, posts, or tweets, will show intent to destroy evidence and implicate himself and his cronies like Trump even further.

Fuck that guy.

People with money can hire people to do what they don’t understand themselves. And that may have been done for him by anyone else that knew he had evidence that might hurt them.
