Kathleen Edwards: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

Music • Views: 24,877

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Bob Boilen | May 19, 2021
From a house in East Nashville, Kathleen Edwards sings about how thankful she is for those early aughts when she was praised with awards, television appearances, touring to packed venues — even if the tour bus with the bed in back was “total crap.” As she continues to sing “Glenfern,” the opening track to her first album in eight years as well as this Tiny Desk (home) concert, she remembers her former husband and collaborator.

But, as thankful as she is for those years, they overwhelmed her, and she quit. Struggling with depression, Kathleen Edwards opened a coffee shop called Quitters Coffee and lived a very different life.

A handful of years later, in 2017, she was invited to Nashville by Maren Morris to write some songs. That Nashville visit sparked a new beginning and eventually the 2020 album Total Freedom, which birthed the four songs you hear in this Tiny Desk concert.

She’s flanked by her carefully masked musical mates: guitarist Todd Lombardo, who also plays on Kathleen’s latest album, and Justin Schipper on dobro. Kathleen Edwards seems happy playing these new songs. They can be songs of sadness, sometimes filled with seething, such as “Ashes to Ashes,” but she’s also grateful for her everlasting love for a four-legged creature and the little catalpa tree where it’s buried. She’s found strength after those nonstop years — a lesson for us all, perhaps about life and time and its gift.

“Hard On Everyone”

The vaccine protects against most variants, having COVID only protects against that one particular variant.

re: #5 The Pie Overlord!

My mom said the exact same thing to me over the phone yesterday afternoon. I told her that natural COVID immunity only lasts so long, and that the vaccines are far superior. She brushed me off. Oh well. I’ve long since written them off as lost causes. I will remain amicable with them as much as I can, and I will mourn their inevitable passing because they were good to me in the early years of my upbringing and later after I became an adult, but they’re idiots and I will not put them on a pedestal they have not earned.

I don’t remember this, and OMG:

In the Spring of 1986, 9-year-old Desireé Rodriguez was excited to be out on her fathers boat with her family…her mom Petra, 27, father Thomas, 30, younger sister Tricia, 5, aunt Corrine and uncle Allen.

Their 28-foot power vessel DC II, left from San Pedro harbor to spend a day of fun and fishing in Catalina.

On their return in the late afternoon, a heavy fog developed making navigation difficult to those without radar.

Desireé was asleep when she was woken by her dads screaming, “Get out of the boat. The boat’s sinking!”

In less than three minutes, the family was in the cold Pacific water.

She and Tricia squeezed through a small window.

Her father told the family to stay with the mostly submerged vessel and that he would try to swim to land to get help.

He was never seen again.

And then…it got even worse.

One by one, her family members just let go of life. First, her dad said he would swim away for help because he could not stand being around there anymore. So he left and swam, and she never saw him again. Then her mom started foaming at the mouth, and once she realized that her mom died, she took some rope from the boat and wrapped it around her mom’s chest so she would not sink. Desireé does not remember when exactly her little sister died, but she was next to go. And then, hours later, well into the next day, her uncle started swimming away because he gave up. Desireé tried to go after him and hold him up, but he was too big, so she let go of him, and he slipped beneath the water. Then her aunt dies. So, over the course of a day, this little girl had just gone on this normal family excursion—which was supposed to be fun—turned into a tragedy that left her stranded in the water overnight.

Antwone Rivers and his wife wore their masks and practiced social distancing, but neither felt comfortable getting the vaccine

A Michigan family is mourning the loss of their beloved patriarch who passed from COVID-19 after refusing the vaccine.

Antwone Rivers, 39, and his wife, Hollie, took COVID-19 preventative methods seriously by wearing masks and social distancing from others, but neither felt comfortable getting the vaccine. It is now a decision she regrets.

“drawdown”

On February 24, the Fed’s Fedwire system went down for slightly over two hours, and all these cryptocurrency nuts just CRAWLED out of the woodwork to tell us how great their system(s) were at moving money as opposed to the Fed, which was down*. AH NO. These system(s) are great for losing money, or having your money stolen.

That said,

I don’t know if there’s any more information yet, but the fact that you need an Interpol notice to get your money? Hell no this shit ain’t ready for primetime!

*The root cause was a “maintenance mistake” and “human error,” which in a system like Fedwire could mean almost anything.

I finally woke up at 11:30 am and later went over to my mother’s to watch racing and shoot the breeze with my brother and hope that mom would eventually wake up. She’s been sleeping a LOT lately. She finally woke up just before 5 pm.

It’s hard to communicate with her because she’s so deaf now, but I scooted a chair up real close to her and had a bit of a chat with her. She still hasn’t lost her wit. At one point she was trying to read my t-shirt, which has letters on it saying, “Questionable Content Inside.” Instead, what she thought she saw was “Quotable Quotes Inside.” (Which isn’t bad for a t-shirt, I might even make one up for her.) So I read my t-shirt to her and she said, “Well, everyone should have one of those shirts.”

I guess we’re all questionable in my mother’s eyes.

For selected defendants, (and for what can be touted as an extraordinarily reasonable fee) , I’m sure they will be able to obtain a nice formal pardon from “Donald J.Trump, 45th President of the United States”. Typed and with proper grammar and everything…..

Damn it. There’s a mouse somewhere in the dining room. A fairly decent size one. All I have are smaller size basic old fashioned snap traps and a little peanut butter. I put them under the dining room hutch and in the cabinet I saw the mouse in.

Cleo saw it come in from the basement/garage area to the upstairs. We didn’t. From there it got in through the back of the China cabinet in the dining room. I can hear it from time to time. Cleo and my husband are asleep in the living room. Seriously? Ack. We have to go get traps in the morning as soon as the stores open. I really need some sleep. That’s gonna be difficult. Damn it. Well, that’s okay. (::

It turns out you cannot call the Nurse Helpline for the Cheyenne VA, because they don’t have one.

I tried a couple others (Phoenix, Chicago, Palo Alto) and they all say they cannot provide help outside their areas.

The Emergency Room number the Cheyenne VA lists is actually the Public Affairs Office.

Giving up on that, the county hospital suggests that since my voice is slowly coming back, it is probably not an emergency. They recommend monitoring the problem and if does not improve in a day or two then come in.

Really, other than a terribly scratchy voice I feel fine.

It is possible that as suggested above, I used up all my words and I need time to refill. /s

Of note, reviews of the restaurant on-line go back years saying the restaurant selectively enforces its dress code against Black people.

There was a blowup like that in Flagstaff around 1990; some black people were turned away for wearing jeans while other white people wearing them were admitted.

The club, as I was told, featured department store mannequins suspended from the ceiling and was called “Dummies”.

More on the Minsk hijacking.

The current whatabout is the Evo Morales incident from 2013. Basically, the US thought Snowden was on board this flight with Morales from Russia to Bolivia, and strongarmed European countries to deny the plane overflight. (Which is probably a violation of overflight agreements, but I’m not sure whether Bolivia is/was a signatory, so anyways.) The plane eventually landed in Austria due to fuel issues, where the Austrians welcomed Morales, fuelled the plane, found no Snowden, and Morales was on his way. Much condemnation of the US from South America and the UN, apologies from Europe.

So, now more initial spineless reaction from European Commission officials (in the middle of a long weekend, but that’s how the world works). Now getting stronger as they get yelled at. International relations was always a weak point of the EU as an institution. Putin and Lukashenka don’t want to be friends, they don’t misunderstand the European position; they are abusers and predators who are only testing the electric fence for weakness.

So, the Russian reaction: the less propaganda-ish newspapers are reporting the airliner story, with a general negative bent (this was dangerous, and Europe’s finally going to get pissed off enough to do something, with one or two approving). The Kremlin rags are ignoring it completely, which means the Kremlin isn’t on board with this (or doesn’t want to admit anything at all).

Except for the editor of RT, who thought the whole thing was fucking brilliant. She has a habit of shooting off her mouth before getting the official party line, so she’s had to walk back a few hot takes in the last couple of years once the word came down.

During Jane Timken’s tenure as Ohio’s GOP chair, Donald Trump won the one-time bellwether state by a whopping 8 percentage points. She put 150,000 miles on her car driving to the state’s 88 counties as a surrogate for the president. And she raised a total of $5 million for his two campaigns,” Politico reports.

“But that sterling record of MAGA support might not be enough to guarantee the former president’s support in her bid for the GOP Senate nomination. Timken’s sin? In her capacity as state party chair, she failed to immediately condemn home-state Republican congressman, Anthony Gonzalez, for voting to impeach Trump in response to the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6.”

Polling places for urban voters of color would be cut under Texas Senate’s version of voting bill being negotiated with House

they’re not even trying to hide it anymore

Under that provision, counties would be required to distribute polling places based on the share of registered voters in each state House district within the county. The formula would apply only to the state’s five largest counties — Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar and Travis — and possibly Collin County once new census figures are released later this year

Rudy Giuliani called an Arizona county official after the presidential election last year to discuss getting challenges to Joe Biden’s win “fixed up,” the Arizona Republic revealed on Sunday.

Giuliani introduced himself in the Christmas Eve call to Maricopa County Supervisor Bill Gates as then-President Donald Trump’s attorney.

“Bill, it’s Rudy Giuliani, President Trump’s lawyer,” Giuliani said in a message left on Gates’ phone that was obtained by the newspaper. “If you get a chance, would you please give me a call? I have a few things I’d like to talk over with you. Maybe we can get this thing fixed up. You know, I really think it’s a shame that Republicans sort of are both in this, kind of, situation. President Donald Trump’s former ambassador to the European Union, Gordon Sondland, is suing former secretary of state Mike Pompeo and the U.S. government for $1.8 million to compensate for legal fees incurred during the 2019 House impeachment probe.

The suit, filed Monday in federal court in the District of Columbia, alleges that Pompeo reneged on his promise that the State Department would cover the fees after Sondland delivered bombshell testimony accusing Trump and his aides of pressuring the government of Ukraine to investigate then presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter in exchange for military aid.

Democrats See Republicans’ Refusal to Investigate the Insurrection as Electoral Gold

almost everyone either saw the insurrection in real time or shortly thereafter. Much as Republicans would like to pretend it never happened, that is not going to work with people who saw it with their own eyes. Nor is the claim that the rioters were normal tourists going to fly. Up until 2022, Democrats are going to harp on the theme: “Why are the Republicans trying to block finding out what happened and who was responsible? Do they approve of a mob sacking the Capitol?” Democrats aren’t going to let people forget, which will make it much harder for Republican candidates to try to change the conversation.

Media narrative: progressives/liberals are soft on crime. Their cities are in ruins because of riots and crime.

Reality: crime and violence was up regardless of the political lean of the city. It was a nationwide phenomenon. One of the contributing factors to gun violence? Easier availability. Less enforcement and lower clearance rates by cops.

It’s impossible to overestimate the impact the pandemic had on crime. People being forced into a different routine, with government constraints on their behavior, placed an enormous amount of stress on our society, which emphasizes independence above all things. People undoubtedly had some mental issues or other problems coping.

NYC public schools are resuming in-person only in September.

Mind you, there are more than a few people upset about this, because children aren’t able to currently get vaccinated, persons of color have found that their kids are doing better because there aren’t as many microaggressions based on race/ethnicity with remote learning, and that some people do better in a remote learning environment.

I don’t know how you’d reconcile those things. The next mayor will be handling the consequences of this decision though when they’re elected in the fall and take office in January 2022.

A lot can happen between now and then, including expanding vaccinations to kids under 12, new variants, etc.

To be honest I think the GOP is going to get away with ignoring it and blocking investigations as much as they can. The media is simply going to be complicit in allowing them to do it*, and Fox/OANN/Newsmax will just constantly spin any investigation as a partisan witch hunt which the nut base will lap up.

* - And the Sunday shows will just bring on Republican after Republican who will continually spout the shifting variations of “nothing to see here” talking points.

So, the Mrs and I binge watched Watchmen over the past week. The Mrs. was completely hooked. It’s a phenomenally well acted series with great performances by Regina King, Jean Smart, and Louis Gossett Jr. among others. Even supporting characters were interesting, complicated, and while it covers origin story of superhero/protagonists, it does so in a not so linear fashion that helps weave different character lives together in a way that is new.

I find it fascinating that it revolves around the Tulsa mass lynching, which was a real series of events. That it spurs more people to look into this stain on US history is a good thing.

Of course, GOPers want to bury this chapter of history and virulent racism, along with other efforts to highlight and educate about the historic racism and segregation on which the nation was built. That’s why they’re so opposed to the 1619 project and what that represents.

Until couple of years ago, they were calling it the Tulsa race riot. Which it obviously wasn’t. I call it a pogrom.

Riots are spontaneous. There’s often underlying circumstances and a precipitating incident that make it “should have been predicted”, but riots don’t have leaders, or a plan and a strategy, or a goal. The deaths, injuries and property damage are because emotions boiled over and what happens happens.

Pogroms are intentional. There’s a leader. There’s a plan. There’s a goal. The deaths, injuries and property damage are the intent. To punish the present victims, and intimidate and demoralize similar demographic groups elsewhere that will hear about it. A show of power with impunity.

re: #140 Dangerman

North Florida is a prude

Here’s more on it:

It’s not odd for there to be a little drama when high school yearbooks are released at the end of the year, but at Bartram Trail High School in St. Johns County, Fla., the drama has reached national attention.

That’s because 80 of the students’ portraits were digitally edited — many of them clumsily — to add more clothing to chests and shoulders.

All of the students are female. None of them were consulted.

Students and parents told local news outlets that they were shocked and embarrassed when they got their copies of the $100 yearbook last week.

The school district told The St. Augustine Record and News4Jax that ultimately the decision to edit the photos was made by the yearbook coordinator — also a teacher at the school — who had deemed the photos were in violation of the school’s dress code. According to the school’s website, all photos in the yearbook must be consistent with dress code or they “may be digitally adjusted.”

But critics have been quick to point out that the yearbook has unedited photos of the men’s swim team in Speedos, for example, which would also violate the dress code.

I have three major problems with this:

1) Only girls were deemed in violation.
2) I don’t see anything immodest about the photos. It’s not like any of these girls we wearing nothing but bikini tops.
3) The “digital adjustments” themselves were bad. REALLY bad.

Except this is not that. We have the wherewithal to do both and the farther we get from the origin the harder it will be to narrow it down. Ideally we(the world not just the US) would have had teams in Wuhan, in the actual labs, with full access to all staff, and teams in all the the surrounding areas testing wild animals, domestic animals, stuff in the wet market etc. as early as December of 2019 instead of just taking China’s word on anything.

I don’t think they’re killing the ACA. Roberts crafted that ACA ruling while killing the Medicaid expansion rule. He’s not going to see all that undone now, not in the midst of a pandemic.

But given the right wing bent on the court, it’s going to be a bunch of pretzel logic, and the possibility exists that they’ll stomp on the ACA while metaphysics is involved to keep preexisting conditions protections alive (given that Roberts himself has a preexisting condition).

Time will speed up for you, and distant observers will perceive you slowing down. I guess you’d see the rest of the history of the universe before you get to the singularity (if it exists). Enjoy!

GPS satellites have to correct for two different relativistic effects: special relativity says that because the satellites are travelling at a different speed to us on Earth, their clocks look slower to us and an uncorrected clock would lose about 7 microseconds a day. However, general relativity says that because they’re farther out of Earth’s gravity well, their clocks look faster to us and would gain 45 microseconds a day. Therefore, the net is 38 microseconds a day, which is what the onboard clocks have to be slowed by. If they weren’t, GPS measurements would be creeping off by about 10 km per day.

GOP seditionist/treasonweasel enablers are going to block investigation into what happened. All their lies would be hung out to dry like so much dirty laundry, which is why the GOP refuses to allow that to happen. They’ll further the coverup, because the only ones responsible for 1/6 are GOPers from Trump on down.

The only ones trying to block the investigation are GOPers.

If the GOP filibusters on this, every Democrat should use it in campaign ads showing how complicit the entire GOP structure is in covering up Trump’s misconduct. The entire GOP is corrupted to the core, and it was corrupt before Trump took over.

Yep. They came within a few tens of thousands of votes of pulling it off, and had it not been for a record Democratic turnout and a few GOP state electoral officials with some remaining shreds of decency and integrity, they could’ve gotten away with it.

They are going to do their damnedest to change electoral laws and procedures to keep Dem voters away from the polls and make sure that only loyalists are in place in the state electoral commissions to avoid repeating their “failure” of 2020.

As was pointed out on the Stephanie Miller Show this morning, all they have to do is refuse to certify the results in a few swing states because of “irregularities” and not appoint electors to throw the election into the House. Each state only gets one vote, and the GQP will probably control over half of state delegations in Congress, even if they are in the minority.

The dispatchers and schedulers ultimately sign off on the routings, not the pilots. And they choose for the passengers.

I’d let it slip that NATO will perform many “training” flights around Belarus’ borders. Many installations will be “illuminated” by targeting systems, many times during the day and the night. Good time for night exercises. Perhaps they can almost overfly Russia.

I remember watching one of the Lufthansa company videos while bored stiff on an 11-hour flight. The whole flight planning process is very centralized: the pilots will be given the flight plan from headquarters, which could have been the result of multiple staff meetings and various time, fuel, and resource availability tradeoffs. I’m not sure about how it works legally, but the pilot would be the company’s agent and certainly when he’s following the company’s plan.

Nobody in NATO-world is treating Belarus as a friendly country. The big concern there is the Suwalki gap, which is a fairly narrow stretch of land connecting Poland and Lithuania, with Kaliningrad on one side and Belarus on the other. Both considered Parts of the Problem.

And in life part two,

Just last week, the internet thrilled to The Linda Lindas, screaming and crunching power chords in the middle of the stacks of the Los Angeles Public Library. “Racist, Sexist Boy” — written and performed by four tween and teen punks calling out anti-Asian American bias and misogyny — immediately became something of a 2021 anthem. (“Poser! Blockhead! Riffraff! Jerk face!”)

Now, in what has become a very familiar cycle to music-industry watchers, the band landed a record deal almost as soon as its video went viral. Its signing to the longstanding LA punk label Epitaph Records was confirmed by Variety. By Friday, the band’s performance of “Racist, Sexist Boy” had been posted to Epitaph’s YouTube channel.

The quartet, whose members (Bela, Eloise, Lucia and Mila) range in age from 10 to 16, got its start in 2018 at Girlschool LA. Member station KQED says the band has been mentored by Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

The Linda Lindas’ current Bandcamp bio describes the group as “Half Asian / half Latinx. Two sisters, a cousin, and their close friend. The Linda Lindas channel the spirit of original punk, power pop, and new wave through today’s ears, eyes and minds.”

We will have a scenario in which Biden will have clearly won the election, and the GQP engages in legal and political maneuvers to steal it from him, while he is still President. Then the question arises, should he refuse to accept a Trump “victory” in the House when Biden would’ve won but for the bad faith refusal of state GQP officials to certify his victory? In other words, the crisis will come before Trump takes power, while Biden will still be seen by the majority as the legitimate President.

When you think about it, the American fascists don’t have the numbers. They don’t have the wealth-generating capacity of the country, they don’t have the military, and they’ve been doing their best to piss off the intelligence services and federal police. They’re an aging people in the dying parts of the country. From a coup perspective, this is a bad place to start.

Their only claim is the words on the paper of an archaic document, and that the actual power of the country would meekly submit to it despite having announced to everyone that they intended to cheat at every opportunity.

Correct. Corporate America will see civil war as bad for business, and I believe will overwhelmingly oppose the GQP’s attempt to game the outcome of a Biden victory for Trump. The courts may also have a say in the bad faith refusal of state GQP officials to perform an essentially ministerial task of certifying the election. And I would hope for mass demonstrations against the steal attempt, before it comes to fruition.

Texans were warned by Sam Houston too.

On April 19, 1861, he told a crowd:

Let me tell you what is coming. After the sacrifice of countless millions of treasure and hundreds of thousands of lives, you may win Southern independence if God be not against you, but I doubt it. I tell you that, while I believe with you in the doctrine of states rights, the North is determined to preserve this Union. They are not a fiery, impulsive people as you are, for they live in colder climates. But when they begin to move in a given direction, they move with the steady momentum and perseverance of a mighty avalanche; and what I fear is, they will overwhelm the South.[90]

Nah. Every debate will have an earnest democrat saying to his opponent at some point, “So, you supported the challenge to the election results of 2020, which led to the attack on the capital, killing 4 police officers in the process. Do you today agree that President Biden won the election fairly, and do you now support the commission to deal with the insurrection that you voted against in 2021?”

The young girl did not “deserve” a slap in any sense, but she really lost it big time. Probably not very happy about getting a new sibling to suck all the attention out of the room…

Take a look at the Video again. She gave the balloon a tentative jab at first. She was scared of the BANG! when prodded (heh) to do it again, and backed off.

It was the noise, not receiving less attention as a result of losing her sole child status (she has no idea what *that* even means). But a Big Bang? That scares her.

The young girl did not “deserve” a slap in any sense, but she really lost it big time. Probably not very happy about getting a new sibling to suck all the attention out of the room…

Or, freaked out about popping a black balloon. Could have had nothing to do with a future sibling and everything to do with a POP! SCREAM!

My buddy once went out with his friends to play paintball against a team of Canadian infantry. Buddy and his friends had no idea what hit them; before they had any idea what was going on or where they were in relation to each other, splat splat splat. This is without comms and GPS jamming, and no vehicles, arty or air support. Just some boots on the ground trained together to know what they were doing.

I can imagine a gang of ammosexuals trying to ambush a military fuel convoy. Where would they meet up? Where would they park their pickups while they traipse off into the weeds? Won’t a mass of clearly marked insurgent vehicles be noticed? How do they think they can avoid infantry patrols, who really can move around un-noticed? Or drones? Or airplanes, scout choppers, and satellites? Can they keep their flabby carcasses hidden in the field for days or weeks on end? Do they really think Twitter and FB will protect their identities once the lead starts flying? To them, the Barrett .50 is an ultimate weapon. To real troops, the next step up, a 25 mm chain-gun, is an extreme level of restraint.

Indeed. If Taiwan’s semi-conductor industry shuts down, even for a week, “supply chain problems” will become “tech paralysis”.

I find that an overreaction, but airlines & pilots should be aware that they overfly at their own risk.

It’s not an overreaction in the least. Pilots don’t fly at their own risk nor do passengers (if a crash happens no one just goes Oh Well; relatives sue, etc.) What happened has to be stopped STAT, whatever it takes.

Texans were warned by Sam Houston too.

Of course what the GQP is hoping is that their new vote suppression laws will work sufficiently to allow Trump to squeak to a legal election victory with no post election shenanigans necessary. I don’t think they will, but if so, we’re fucked.

We also, like Joe Biden is doing, have a little bit of time to make sure more people understand just what Republicans are doing.

I just wish this lot would stop this shit. They’ve been spinning paranoid fantasies about dire outcomes since 2016, they have been wrong pretty much every goddamned time, and I am sick of it. Yes, I skip these posts as soon as I recognize them, but they still sour the LGF experience. No wonder so many of our fellow lizards have dropped off in the last few years.

She meant the baby with the unrevealed gender, not the screaming existing child.

The gender is unknown and unknowable; that balloon will land someplace people have no fucking clue what it’s from.

Whereas I took it as a joke about why the screaming child didn’t want to break the balloon — the new sibling might also be trans. Harmless, in either case.

To me the most noticeable thing about the video is the mother acting like a toddler and letting go of the balloon when her mind switched from holding the balloon to slapping the existing child over her refusal to cooperate with the stunt.

re: #257 Michele: Out of the closet, Into the fire

I think that was meant as a joke, since they didn’t figure out what the gender was supposed to be. Maybe lame, but certainly not an attack on you or me or any of the others here that don’t conform to our “biological” gender.
