I’m generally not fond of the doomsday scenarios we like to get wrapped up in here, but this is basically the worst of the group. No, they are not well set. Yes, some of the contests were close, but if they can’t get more votes than the Democrat then they lose.

They know that they cannot win the popular vote. Their strategy for 2020 was to short-circuit the EC if it turned out against them, and only a record Democratic turnout prevented that.
And the handful of GOP election commissioners who had enough decency and integrity to accept the outcome have have been replaced with party hacks who will toe the party line and not repeat the mistakes they made in 2020.
I am trying not to be too pessimistic, but even my most optimistic assessment is that it will be a legal/procedural clusterfuck that greatly overshadows 2020 in terms of contested outcomes and dragging out all the way to the inauguration and beyond…

The Democrat could get 65% of the vote nationwide and still lose thanks to the electoral college; and that is especially true with the new voter suppression rules in red states.

re: #8 I Would Prefer Not To

statute of limitations.
The one they convicted him for is the only one that was recent enough to be triable.
Bruce Castor, who is Alex Acosta to Bill Cosby’s Jeffrey Epstein.
This is why the conviction was overturned and why Cosby cannot be tried again.
The case had a complicated history that began in 2005 when Constand first reported the alleged assault to then-Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce L. Castor Jr., who ultimately declined to file charges in this case.
But Castor’s successors reopened the case and charged Cosby in 2015, just days before the 12-year statute of limitations expired and amid a barrage of new accusations from women across the country. At the time, Castor objected to the new prosecution, saying he’d struck a deal with Cosby and his lawyers not to prosecute him for Constand’s assault if Cosby agreed to sit for a deposition in a civil case she had filed against him.
Excerpts from that deposition were ultimately used against Cosby at trial
He was charged in late 2015, when a prosecutor armed with newly unsealed evidence — Cosby’s damaging deposition from her lawsuit — arrested him days before the 12-year statute of limitations expired.

When a prosecutor gets someone to waive their 5th Amendment rights in return for a promise not to prosecute, you can’t take that back.

If Bill Cosby thinks he’s going to be able to walk around in public, he needs to think again. We rarely talk about current events on our main chat (except for severe weather, which could lead to building or branch closures) but this just came up. re: #8 I Would Prefer Not To

no. statute of limitations ran on them. that’s the other part of this no one seems to be reporting on. the trial judge allowed testimony from women who could not be part of the criminal complaint because the statute had run. I think Bill Cosby is a scumbag, but this was an absolutely correct outcome. If a prosecutor tells somebody “testify at the civil trial and we’ll never prosecute you criminally,” then they don’t get to later decide to criminally prosecute you for it.

Arkansas state senator Jason Rapert, having recovered from Covid-19 after attending a mask-free church in the name of “religious freedom” (the right of Christians to make you sick), is now on the warpath against a local library in his district for having a Pride event.
He’s a moran, meaning he’s in the Reich party. He posted a screed to Facebook which ended:
“Reading books and discussing homosexuality is INAPPROPRIATE for children. I will get answers and demand action.”
Conservatives and Christians being against reading seems about right to me. Keep driving away people from your religion, conservatives are doing a much better job than atheists ever could.
He is running for state governor in 2022.
With regards to the Faulkner County Library in Conway hosting a story time session for minor children to discuss homosexuality for “Pride” month. I dedicate my recent tweet to you. Wake up. You are out of touch with the majority of our citizens. #CommonSense #arpx #arleg https://t.co/9v7DcJWz0n

It would be amusing were it not infuriating that people like Cruz, who apparently know absolutely nothing about science, label whatever they agree with, no matter how unscientific the basis for their views, as science.
See also religions. They do the same.
There is a reason most religions dovetail so well with conservatism. Conservatism depends on some sort of unchanging truth about society which should never change. Religions depend on books which can never be changed when shown to be untrue.

The problem started yesterday afternoon when my wife wanted me to log into a Kroger subsidiary to check the receipt for an order we had placed earlier in the day without difficulty. Today, I discovered that I was experiencing the problem on other sites.

Wow! He sure did. Good fucking riddance! Besides engineering the Iraq war in the first place, he went on to deny proper mine-resistant vehicles (MRAPs) to American troops for an inordinate, indeed, criminally negligent, time. I was in Iraq as a contractor at the height of the IED onslaught in 2006. Two to four GIs were being killed every day, blown up when their flat bottomed Humvees ran over a remote-control mine (“IED”). My PRIVATE employers provided an MRAP. They bought it in South Africa, paid cash on the barrel-head, and spent even more to have it airlifted via Antonov AN-124. This category of vehicle had been invented in South Africa in the 1970s and there was a vast amount of real world experience behind them. American companies were standing by to do a Model T job on them as soon as Rummy gave the word. The word didn’t come until hundreds of GIs, and thousands of friendlies, had been killed. In the meantime, we made a practice of giving rides to every hitchhiking GI or friendly Iraqi we could stuff in.

WASHINGTON—According to a poll released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center, a record 95% of Americans now approve of Kim Jong-un after seeing photos that reveal the North Korean leader sporting a much trimmer figure following a month of intensive weight loss. “Among U.S. citizens, Kim is receiving high positive ratings across the board, a staggering uptick that is largely attributable to how good he looks with his new, slimmed-down body,” said polling analyst Mary Silverman, adding that the totalitarian dictator’s favorability scores had long languished in the single digits across the United States, and that they showed no signs of budging last year when South Korean intelligence officials estimated his weight had reached 308 pounds. “We found that 91% of Americans now believe Kim is a compassionate leader, 94% believe he is trustworthy, and 99% agree with the statement ‘Kim Jong-un is the right man for the job.’

I’d like to know exactly who was in charge of all these residential schools up in Canada? Lavrenty Beria, perhaps? Maybe Heinrich Himmler?
Remember, all large Christian churches were involved in the First Nations’ genocides in Canada. The Catholic Church only gets the best press.
Hayter Reed (political independent) was Canada’s commissioner of Indian Affairs, charged with reducing costs (such as starving reservations), and purposefully destroying successful First Nations’ agricultural operations on the Great Plains, with the goal of making them permanent peasants. The plan was actually called the Peasant Farming Policy.
His service was under Conservative Party prime ministers. He was fired by Sir Wilfred Laurier (Liberal Party) one year after Laurier was elected to the House of Commons and made Prime Minister.

Franklin Pierce (who ranked lower than Donald Trump) helped fuel the fires of the Slave power by enforcing the Fugitive Slave Act in the north (and other things), and James Buchanan literally did nothing while slave states seceeded. The long term effects of Donald Trump’s Presidency (or even the medium term effects) won”t be known for a while.
And, as much as he sucked, Trump has been the first President in decades not to get us involved in a new war. IMHO GWB was worse than Trump.

None of our socialised electric companies in Nebraska have sent any such notices either (on the other hand, it’s still fairly cool here).
Back during the horrible blizzard which affected Texas and Louisiana, Omaha Public Power diverted electricity to Louisiana in accordance with the Interstate compact. (Of note, Nebraska’s electric providers are the only ones which are not capitalist corporations.)
Wingnuts in the Unicameral tried to make that a thing, bellyaching for a state investigation into OPP for providing electricity in accordance with the agreement between the states. After grandstanding for a few days on the benefits of privatising our electricity and being absolutely roasted by everyone in the state, they moved on to a different conservative outrage.
Suggestions of privatising our electric providers is pretty much the kiss-of-death for a politician here. No one wants to pay the prices the rest of the nation does.

Sooner or later, somebody finds where the bodies are buried.
For an institution based on the concept of resurrection, Holy Mother Church certainly hasn’t grasped the concept that the dead do not always stay buried. Its complicity in colonialism—cultural and otherwise—mixed with its own millennia-old perversity toward human sexuality has led it into horrors that, in their own way, rival the crimes committed against children, and covered up, that have come to light over the past 20 years.
