The Soviet Union gave us that rifle. Current Russia can’t. Probably not past Russia either.

Sure enough, Twitter is pushing the Torygraph scare-story about the end of the West because women aren’t having enough babies:

twitter.com

It’s only a crisis if you think brown babies are bad.

Note that the graph they use also shows birthrate declining in China:

It’s a bonkers tweet.

The problem is that we are large mammals and we vastly have overshot what the rest of the ecosystem can support through life, so we resort to digging up buried carbon to support ourselves.

Smaller populations will mean less workers, which will mean a change in the economies of the world.

However, to think that is bad is a moral judgement, not some sort of law of the universe.

I sometimes fall into a rabbit hole and watch Reels on my FB page. Mostly about dogs and horses and stupid human tricks, but interspersed with lots of conservative and dude-bro drivel. Lots of Jordan Peterson, Barstool bros, guys talking about working for Trump and getting to know what a great guy he is personally. There is no equivalent liberal content, at least not on my feed. Subjective, I guess.

The drought affecting the Mississippi valley is something that gets a little attention. The drought affecting China has gotten very little attention here in the US.

Big stories are pretty much ignored by media because said companies want viewers/readers/listeners and what draws people in are the sordid stories, the menial conflicts, the us-verses-them dynamic of sports even if the subject is not a real sport.

This is why TV now pays a lot of money for live sports. It’s the only thing that reliably draws viewers.

Nevertheless, big picture problems are happening.

And when bad times come the masses will look for those to blame, those who have offended some sort of god.

I don’t split a ticket with any Republican candidate. If the choice is only a Republican candidate, I leave that position blank.

On my ballot this time around, I intend to cast a vote for the Libertarians running for State Treasurer and State Auditor (as no Democrats are running for those positions), the Legalize Marijuana Now Party candidate for State AG (because no Democrat is running for that position), and leaving blank any position where only a Republican is running.

These two young men used to live in China before bailing circa 2019. Prior to leaving, they used to make videos of motorcycling around China, such as going up to the Russian border (that was pretty interesting). They made China fascinating but they didn’t pretty it up. The Xi government just didn’t like not having them under control, and they were getting called in to talk to the local police on a regular basis, so they made the decision to leave the country with their Chinese families.

Here’s their commentary on what happened. About 19 minutes in, they talk about how Xi has apparently kicked a guy out of the Party Congress who was described as Xi’s right hand man (but a member of an opposing clique).

There will also be pressure put directly on EU countries to also fall into line behind American fascist policies like abortion and birth control using the existence of NATO itself as an extortion device. Either they fall in line or they no longer fall under US protection.

Our American Taliban would gladly take Putin’s hand instead in their quest to “Christianize” the entire world…by any means necessary.

Ugh.

TikTok star gkbarry, aka Grace Keeling, says app can be used for good (BBC)

The story is not the headline, as I assume you could use TikTok “for good.” In the lede, you get this:

One of the UK’s top TikTok creators says it can be a great learning tool - after a poll for the BBC indicated many young people use it for hours daily.

Grace Keeling, 23, known for her candid, funny, short videos, has 2.5 million followers and her own podcast.

She admits users can become “wrapped up” in the app, but also says she’s “probably learned more on TikTok than I did at school”.

(emphasis mine, more at the link)

Further down, the article cites an Ipsos pol (not our Ipsos here, the French company Ipsos) of 16-24 year olds about their social media usage. 83% said they use at least one social media platform every day (in case you’re wondering why propagandists target social media: Get ‘em while they’re young).

Instagram and YouTube were tied as the most-used social media platforms by the survey group. 39% reported they were on TikTok more than three hours every day.

But it sounds very much like what the Tory party is doing right now. The elite of the Tories are deciding who will run a country of 60M.

And it’s what the Trumping GOP wants to do to the US.

Except, if the government is not dissolved sooner, in January 2025, the people of Great Britain will have the opportunity to vote in a new Parliament. So very different from China.

A reminder of the turmoil here in the 1970’s when a vice president was forced to resign and then replaced by someone unelected to the post, but approved by Congress. And then, less than a year later, the President resigns, the unelected VP becomes President and nominates another unelected Republican to the position of VP, who is also approved by Congress. So the UK is experiencing something very similar.

The Trump threat is a very different danger to our survival since it is designed to prevent any future fair elections.

A Lincoln Journal-Star writer trolling state sentor Bostelman, who started the latest round of this nonsense with litterboxes. NBC now tallies at least twenty Republican politicians who have repeated this crap.

Bostelman was humiliated by international media outlets, so other Republicans said they wanted some of that attention.

I’m listening right now to a podcast recorded on 10/17 on the ChinaProject forum with Susan Shirk, an expert on the Hu Jintao years in particular. They don’t know this is in the works, but she’s discussing the “rise and fall of collective leadership” under Hu and Wen Jiaobao. I have no insights as to what happened with Hu Jintao being led out, but it’s interesting that Hu represented the vision of Deng Xiaoping that there would never be another Mao. And Xi, whose family suffered considerably under the Cultural Revolution and whose father was rehabilitated by Deng, is openly returning China to Maoist-style rule.

re: #60 Hecuba’s daughter

In the US in the 1970’s there was an elected House and Senate, the latter who had approve the nominations.

I wonder about the UK, that it is becoming dysfunctional faster than the US. There doesn’t seem to be any backstop against the ruling party just becoming a circus.

I don’t know what 2025 will bring. We could have a world war before then.

And in China - Xi will die in the not too distant future - he is old. The entire CCP is a quiet but broken machine, and Deng and Hu knew that and tried to fix it. Xi may want to be the greatest emperor, but he can’t last long if he tries to strong arm the populace even more.

Oligarchies are no less stable than democracies, at least we have yet to be shown that. Democracies themselves are pretty ragged, carried on by the will of enough people.

Remember, women didn’t even vote (nationally) in this country until about a century ago. Many black people were frozen out of American politics until the 1960’s. We’re still young, and it is not clear to me if the majority of the US citizenry really want to be a true democracy or not. Many will be fine with the old ways.

That is, unfortunately, how the establishment treats revolutionaries like the GQP. They think that any position the revolutionaries adopt is just first move in a game. At some point they believe the revolutionaries will begin to compromise or seek common ground.

But as Henry Kissinger pointed out in his doctoral thesis, “They (the revolutionaries) are willing, indeed eager, to push their logic to the ultimate conclusion.”

They want blood and are not going to stop until they get it.

The stock 757 has only enough range to make it to Western Europe, just under 5000 miles of range on fumes. However I suppose a quick Trump trip to Cuba or Venezuela would be possible to access other means to eventually flee to Russia.

Random pictures from our trip to Canada I didn’t post previously

Canada Coast Guard Rescue Boat

Staying at the ferry landing motel in Québec, these folks pulled in. It would seem that Canada’s Coast Guard uses U-Haul rental trucks to move their boats (or someone stole it).

More colourful trees in northern Québec

More scenery along highway QC-389 from Labrador City.

Quebec Route 389.

Quebec Route 389 from Labrador City to the St. Lawrence River. Over 100km of it is unpaved, such as this section. The Québec Tourist Guide (which I only got after I got down to the south) says “only the adventurous should attempt this route.” Perhaps I need to send some of my pictures along the route to Québec’s tourist bureau, along with this previously-posted picture of my car when we were nearing civilisation.

Well, the three members of Parti Quebecois and the eleven members of Québec Solidaire who were just elected to the Québec National Assembly have refused to swear an oath to King Charles III, as required by the Canadian Constitution. They did swear an oath to the Québec Constitution as required by provincial law.

The two parties are trying to negotiate a way to sit in the National Assembly without swearing the required oath to the Crown. In the meantime, they have access to their offices and pay, but cannot sit in the legislature (what a grift that is).

Just now the clouds disappeared and the sun came out. And what do we see? A lot of “Termination Dust” (that’s snow to those in the lower 48) on the surrounding mountains. Looks like 1-2 feet just about everywhere up there.

As I’ve mentioned before, this has been a very wet year here in the Alaska Panhandle.
So far this year, our total precipitation (74.15 inches) so far this year is 144%of normal (51.42 inches).

I can live with the rain (barely) but heavy snow fall would cause a lot of mobility problems.

There’s a couple of avalanche slide areas aimed at downtown Juneau. There’s another major chute about a mile south of downtown which has to be “shot” down several times each winter.

Roslyn has undergone rapid intensification, from a tropical storm last night to a category IV hurricane today.

nhc.noaa.gov (NHC hurricane track and warning areas—the storm is expected to dissipate before it reaches Texas. Dissipate in tropical weather terminology means it is no longer an organised storm, not that there isn’t still a metric fuquetonne of rain coming your way.)

In fact, on Day 3, the Weather Prediction Center predicts severe thunderstorms for portions of Texas and Oklahoma, with the remnant low of Roslyn near the Texas border.

More Socialism from the would-be Florida dictator.

DeSantis is very publicly ditching “free market” business dogma and embracing a very strong government welfare state display of buying votes and laying waste to traditional GOP talking points.

The use of government largess as a vehicle to eventually promote hate, bigotry and oppressive divisive rhetoric towards vulnerable people reminds me of certain other individuals in Europe about 100 years ago. That didn’t end well.

Griffith Observatory, and Griffith Park in general, is one of my favorite places in LA.
I first visited there in 1957, when we first arrived from the UK. It seemed as exotic as the surface of Mars. I have been back many times since, most recently in 2019, which means I am overdue for a return trip. It is still a place of wonder, now tinged with nostalgia and the memory of another time.

Speaking of journeys from another time, Dr. Edwin Krupp has been Director of the Observatory since 1974. He is now 77 years old.

Republicans should have their feet held to the fire in their decades-long rhetoric against any and all “socialism” which is of course exactly what this relief money is. You cannot bash something and then quickly accept the money without a massive sense of hypocrisy for which they never are held to account.

This morning while doing some woodworking I listened to an episode of This American Life,
about Covid, medical disinformation, people “doing their own research,” and the disastrous effects on one family. It’s a tough listen/read, but it illustrates the level of irrational paranoia the right wing has unleashed to serve their interests.

“…Her father was insisting that Rachel not vaccinate his grandkids, her children. He called it murder. When she pushed back, he’d ridicule her.”
……….
“…Rachel was dumbfounded by how much she didn’t know about her father’s and brother’s last month of being alive. Everything was gone. All the answers she’d put off trying to get from her brother about why he hadn’t asked for help for their father— gone. Her brother’s recovery— fake, some kind of performance. She had no idea what he’d been thinking as he was fading away, what he’d been doing, instead of telling her the truth. And then Rachel made a discovery— a record of Peter’s final days. And she found out exactly what happened.”

re: #77 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

Xi is 69 years old — much younger than our current and our previous president. He could be in charge of China for at least the next 15 years, if not longer. And most dictators these days seem to fall as a result of external factors, rather an uprising by the citizenry to install something better.

Questions — Did you mean to say that Oligarchies are no more stable than democracies? and is it rugged rather than ragged?

re: #166 Hecuba’s daughter

Questions — Did you mean to say that Oligarchies are no more stable than democracies? and is it rugged rather than ragged?

I meant what I wrote.

Democracies around the world are very young. Many are highly flawed. The US itself took until the 20th century before the majority of American adults could vote.

Oligarchies come in different dressings. Currently the CCP is one such, with someone who rises to the top to be the strong-man but the leaders after Mao have never had his level of control. Xi may try but I suspect that he’s going to run into trouble sooner rather than later. And that may be why he is doing the purge now, because he knows if serious trouble comes that he won’t be able to control everything.

Again - the democracies of the world are very young. Many suffer from serious corruption. The people at the top in nations declared as democracies are often in the inner circle for life, they just shuffle around. It’s the good-ol-boy network who run things.

Coups happen. Civil wars happen.

Back to Xi - he can control what is officially news in China but he can’t control the global forces in which China must operate. There’s a huge reckoning that has to come about, in regards to China’s need for resources versus how they can manage to keep foreigners from influencing them too much.

Many international corporations have used China as a source of cheap labor. That is a choice made to maximize profits. But when push comes to shove and nations have to make decisions in times of crises, how much can China depend on its trading partners to cooperate with them?

China needs the world as much as the world needs China. Xi can’t really do much about that.

Looks like a ship launching a missile. I suppose that is one way you might express apprehension about geopolitical risks when you have a strategic opportunity.

Pope Francis calls for ‘Christian economy’ (Yahoo!)

Pope Francis emphasizes globally there are a series of “profoundly interconnected crises” in “the areas of health care, the environment, food supplies and the economy,” not to mention regional wars, “social, humanitarian and ethical crises,” all calling for a “new vision,” to “rethink the future of the world,” and establish “a renewed sense of shared responsibility for our world.”

Most recently in May, Pope Francis urged his audience, “We cannot live with the economic pattern that comes from neoliberalism and the Enlightenment. Nor can we live with an economic pattern that comes from Communism. We need … a Christian economy.”

Pope Francis’s problem is our economic system of libertarian markets was created by Christians.

Pope Francis maintains “however much we are asked to believe this dogma of neoliberal faith. Whatever the challenge, this impoverished and repetitive school of thought always offers the same recipes. Neoliberalism simply reproduces itself by resorting to the magic theories of ‘spillover’ or ‘trickle’ - without using the name - as the only solution to societal problems.”

By “spillover” and “trickle” effects, Pope Francis is referring to the supply-side economics dominant from 1980 to 2008, promoted by theories from economic prophets Milton Friedman and Friedrich Hayek.

I don’t think Pope Francis is going to get Roman Catholics to give up on the idea of unrestrained capitalism, much less anyone else.

The Enlightenment was/is the Catholic Church’s most potent enemy.

Plus capitalism didn’t arise from the Enlightenment. It might have arisen during the Enlightenment, but I am unaware (I am not a historian) of any Enlightenment philosophy arguing “capitalism is good.”

Opinions of historians vary, but the general consensus is that capitalism arose from the earlier system of mercantilism, when merchants had amassed sufficient wealth to invest in industry and technology. Thus, mercantilism is sometimes called “primitive capitalism.”

Mercantilism arose in the aftermath of the Black Death which collapsed feudalism (a Christian system).

Crap phone call from the Nebraska Department of Revenue. Bullshyte bureaucracy behind the hide bar.

So when we got back from Canada, one message on our answering machine was from the Department of Revenue regarding an outdated cheque to pay our taxes.

My wife called them up, and what they said to her was that the state lost our tax cheque for a time, and when they found it, the cheque was out-of-date for my bank’s rules to cash. They tried to contact us by letter and phone call to get permission from us to permit the cheque to be cashed (but we were in Canada).

My wife gave them verbal permission, and sent a letter to the state to provide them a written record of our permission.

However, because they lost our cheque for a time, and we weren’t home to get the letter or phone call, we are at fault that our taxes were overdue. Thus, the state is going to send us a bill for interest for late payment.

So the issue is we’re penalised because they’re incompetent. The amount of the interest is too small to hire a lawyer to argue with the Department of Revenue.

There is fighting them for the principle of paying a fine because they are incompetent, but we don’t have that kind of money.

Good Morning Lizards.

So a friend of my husband is in a band. He’s about one of the only people who has lent a hand to help out around here. His band is playing at a little micro brew place down the road from our house next weekend.

He texted my son and asked him if I was doing ok and told him he hopes we can make it because he knows I am having a hard time and he thought getting out might cheer me up. So we’re going to see them and I will get to see how I handle my first social outing since long before my husband passed. I have to start somewhere. Even if just thinking about it makes my anxiety do that little rev up thing it does these days. I hate being a widow. Truly hate it.

Drink less than half what you’re used to drinking at such events, alcohol is a depressant and the anxiety and memories will be more than you expect. Maybe research recipes for some non-alcoholic drinks that look like cocktails, to be able to instruct the bartender.

Yes Delta 8 works. I use two companies to get mine from. Canna River has tinctures, vape products and gummies. Plain Jane has flower, pre rolled flower, tincture and gummies. Canna River also has a points program and a 30 percent off deal for people who fit into the different catagories(seniors, disability, military service, first responders, etc). Plain Jane has sales and sends out discount codes pretty regularly.

Something to keep in mind. The amount of Delta or CBD in a particular product is not listed per dose on the front label of these products. The front label lists the amount in the ENTIRE container. The amount per dose is on the back label, start small and work your way up. Delta 8 is a milder version of the THC in regular weed(which contains Delta 9). It helps me sleep and deal with the awful anxiety spirals I’ve been experiencing.

Eventual Carrion  Oct 23, 2022 • 9:00:58am

So this happened the other day. I have mentioned my favorite watering hole by the river where I have a couple drinks and listen to the rushing water. Well I walk into town the other night and duck in the door. My friend Wally is sitting at the bar. I walk up next to him to collect my drink (all the bartenders know us usuals, no need to order). He says I won’t believe what happened about an hour before. I start to ask him what but he says “You’ll see when you go down to the river”. This was the sight I saw when I walked out.

Seems there was an argument between 2 friends. One took the others van and left him at another bar about 16 miles away. Needless to say they had both been drinking. When the guy who owned the van made it back into town (they had been up to Erie to pick up a fridge and assorted other things) they had a heated argument. The owner of the van told his friend to get his shit out of the van right now. He was told to fuckoff. So he said he was going to drive his van with the guys shit in it into the river. And that is how we got a van in the river.

Pope Francis calls for ‘Christian economy’ (Yahoo!)

Pope Francis’s problem is our economic system of libertarian markets was created by Christians.

I don’t think Pope Francis is going to get Roman Catholics to give up on the idea of unrestrained capitalism, much less anyone else.

I’d have to read more closely what Francis is saying here, but I suspect that he’s possibly referring to the economic theory of “distributism”, which is that the world’s assets should be widely owned rather than concentrated and is based on some Papal social teaching of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. More here:

Just an FYI, I work for a temple of capitalism so no, I don’t think I can endorse distributism.

A NY Times article yesterday about the Truss failure included the following:

Suella Braverman, the home secretary whom Ms. Truss fired last week ostensibly for violating security rules, attacked Ms. Truss for abandoning the party’s promise to cut down immigration numbers. The prime minister talks tough about illegal immigrants, too, but her policies were shaping up to be more moderate because she believes new arrivals are needed to accelerate Britain’s growth.

The clash between Ms. Truss and Ms. Braverman was part of a bigger clash between rival camps in the party — a free-market, libertarian wing, exemplified by the prime minister, and a hard-line anti-immigration wing, represented by Ms. Braverman.

It is always amazing and deeply hypocritical when children of immigrants turn against the concept of immigration. But power is the ultimate aphrodisiac.

Great movies I really like but I’ll never watch again: Saving Private Ryan and The Road.

I’ll probably watch Alien again but that was a very scary movie. My wife has never seen it. I’ll have to wear one of those attack dog suits so she doesn’t claw me.

I like the phrase “temple of capitalism” to refer to things like banks or investment houses. Can I shamelessly steal that phrase? /s

Several political outlets ranging from The American Conservative to The Nation seem to believe that distributism is generally the economic policy that Pope Francis supports.

These guys might have a bit of a biased take on Pope Francis though (November 23, 2021)

While We Were Out (The Distributist Review)

Their outlet was shuttered for several years, but they’re back now that Pope Francis is at the Vatican.

Two major areas are affected by drought:

1) California central valley, where a lot of human-edible food is grown;
2) Great plains/Missouri valley, primary region for wheat, and also important for feed (corn, alfalfa (hay), etc.).

All of this on top of drought in eastern China, mid-latitude Asia, central Africa, and parts of Argentina means stress for food supplies in those areas:

See for example:

Hardly Anybody Has Noticed Somalia Is Having Its Worst Drought Ever.

My checking account is at that bank. I call it Wells The Fargo because I like the abbreviation I use on its file.

Oops, wrong institution. Oh, well.
