LGF: New Server Update

LGF • Views: 24,447

Following our move to the new server (seen above, I wish), I’ve been fixing the bugs as quickly as they make themselves known. We upgraded from PHP 5.6 to the latest PHP 8, there were a helluva lot of changes, and some of them were of the crashing variety.

Today I fixed another issue caused by that upgrade: if you were using our two-factor authentication (2FA) feature with a cell phone number, you’ll find when you try to log in that 2FA has been disabled and you can sign in with just your password.

This was necessary because the encryption library I was using to secure cell phone numbers in our database has been rudely eliminated from PHP 8, and I was forced to re-code those functions using the newer openssl libraries. It’s better in the long run, more secure; but the new encryption format is not backward-compatible with the old. Therefore, I’m turning off 2FA for anyone whose number was stored with the old encryption method.

If you wish to re-enable it, just go to your Account Settings and mess around with the Two-Factor Authentication section of that page.

Cell phone auth should actually be more reliable now than it was on the old server, because our new email system supports the DKIM and SPF protocols that help the big email providers know it isn’t spam.

However, also note that I can’t always guarantee things will work smoothly with cell phone 2FA, because the cell companies are always messing with this stuff and changing addresses on us, and I’m too cheap to pay for a service. For those reasons I always recommend that people wishing for the extra security afforded by 2FA use one of the widely available authenticator apps, which we also support. Google Authenticator is a good place to start, but there are many others available for every platform.

I just took an Uber from Manhattan to Philadelphia. In one hour and 45 minutes different governments charged me $140 in various tolls and taxes.

Did this guy plan his trip to hit every toll in the area?

Half of the voters are women, so they’re less likely to recede into the background.

And half of the women voters are conservatives first and women’s rights second.

How many parents are wingnut gun rights absolutists, who care about their guns more than their children?

The new server really is blazing fast. When you click the Image Library button it’s reading recursively through all the images in your library folder — in my case it’s many thousands of images and folders, and it happens in less than a second. Yasss.

There was a new motel in Scottsbluff since we took off for Canada in August that I noticed on our way home from the auto mechanic.

Its sign out front has a Crusader mascot, along with its sign proclaiming Jesus is Lord in bold letters.

I’d sleep in my Smart before staying in a place like that.

Okay, you challenged me to try it. (How did I get forty-four pages of uploaded images anyway? Maybe I should delete some.)

I went back to the very first image I uploaded. It came up almost instantly.

That’s quite the upgrade, Mr. Johnson.

Most of the time computer stuff just throws me, such as when you post Twitter threads of code.

My wife put a sticker on our Smart some years ago she had to explain to me (she is a Linux geek and I can’t figure out how to say “hi” in Linux). The sticker reads

/dev/car

She put it on as a joke to her first hub.

Anyways, my first image here.

This might be an interesting book to read.

New Book by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI Co-Authored by Atheist (goes to Gaudium Press, a Catholic news publisher)

The book is about a series of letters written between Pope Benedict XVI and an atheist Italian mathematician.

Newsroom(19/10/2022 8:45 PM, Gaudium Press ) “On the Way in Search of Truth” is the new book that contains the exchange of letters and the narration of Benedict XVI’s meetings with the mathematician, Piergiorgio Odifreddi.

Published by Rizzoli, this work presents the letters between Benedict XVI and Odifreddi between 2013 and 2022. The book was publicly presented on 6
October at the Roman University LUMSA (La Libera Università Maria SS. Assunta).

It began in 2011 when Piergiorgio Odifeddi wrote an open letter to Pope Benedict XVI. The letter began with a quote from Joseph Ratzinger’s 1968 book “Introduction to Christianity”, which touched on topics such as Our Lord Jesus Christ and God.

Odifeddi, who was honorary president of the Union of Rationalist and Agnostic Atheists, did not reach out to Benedict again until 2013. After his resignation from the Pontificate, Benedict XVI replied to the Italian mathematician’s letter. A friendship was born then, “a rare thing” when it comes to different positions, explained Monsignor Vincenzo Paglia, president of the Pontifical Academy for Life.

I’m old enough to remember when debate performances like DeSantis’ were almost a death knell for a campaign.

I’m also old enough to remember that an old videotape of a candidate bragging about sexual assault would doom a campaign.

None of this stuff matters anymore because between the courts and voter suppression, the system is effectively rigged in their favor.

Tucker Carlson’s show is one of the most important on cable TV, as far as the cable TV business is concerned.

Every week a couple of his episodes are in the top 10 of all cable shows, as far as number of viewers. Only beat by the NFL and playoffs of other sports.

Also a major link between the Scottish mainland and the Shetland Islands was severed. Supposedly by a fishing vessel. (Apparently fishing vessels severing that line happens a lot.)

So far the indication is that no Russian submarines were involved.

First jets I flew in the Air Force were T-37 Tweets (We turn JP-4 into ear killing noise!), which, basically, had a mortar round under the seat that blew your ass out of the cockpit. You had better have 400 feet under you, level flight, and 150 knots airspeed if you wanted to live.

We had .03” earlier today. We’ll probably get .3 from this last bit as the squall line fell apart as it came off the Balcones Fault Complex (800’ higher in elevation than we are down in Austin). This is not uncommon.

Happily (or unhappily, if you would prefer to get accurate information from newspapers without needing to check the source), that “summary” doesn’t represent the content of the letter.

Which is not to say that I approve — they say that any diplomatic solution would have to be acceptable to Ukraine, and don’t seem to realize that’s another way for saying no negotiations at this time. The letter is a waste of paper (and/or electrons). It’s also signed by my Congresscritter, so I may need to waste some electrons myself.

They do get around in paragraph ten to say it was atheists defending children and parents from Christians. Rumours of Proud Boys as antagonists turned out to be false.

SOUTH BEND, Ind., —- An all-age drag show put on by the LGBTQ Center of South Bend drew out dozens of protesters including religious groups and members of the Proud Boys, a far-right nationalist group. Several police officers also had to respond to keep the peace.

The LGBTQ Center executive director told ABC57 they upped security and even alerted South Bend Police after getting threats about the Proud Boys coming to the show, but Friday’s protest was largely driven by members of religious groups speaking out against the all-age event that welcomed local families.

re: #73 Captain Ron

Hmmm, David Tennant, the tenth Doctor Who is going to be the new fourteenth Doctor Who.

re: #77 Jay C

Only, it seems, for one episode (/special?) - Ncuti Gatwa is still listed as the Fourteenth Doctor for (what one presumes is) Season 14.

re: #78 Belafon

Not quite, but there’s something going on (hint: that wasn’t a regeneration, the clothes don’t change.)

Tennant is the Fourteenth Doctor (with Donna Noble in tow), which will cover the 60th Anniversary specials, which is 3 episode coming in Nov 2023. Then Ncuti Gatwa will be the Fifteenth Doctor (Series 14 ->)

Sweet scaly dreams to all, it’s time for me to head to bed.

And for the Dad joke:

My son asked me, “Why do you keep buying vinyl?”
I said, “Records are….always a sound purchase.”

Until the morrow!

re: #82 ckkatz

Thanks.

I should provide everyone an update on Rex: he’s gonna kill me first. So, as I described, yesterday was a bad day, and with him being 14, and on the heels of our other dog unexpectedly having to be out to sleep, we were all prepared for the worst. Except him.

He gets up this morning, he eats, and he wonders around like yesterday never happened. I wasn’t going to leave it at that. For all i know, this could be a temporary rebound, so I took him to the vet. The vet checks his heart and lungs and is surprised that not only is his heart still doing OK, but there’s no fluid on the lungs or anything he can find that might cause yesterday’s behavior. Just to be sure, he starts checking other organs. Guess what guys: dogs don’t like prostate exams either. Not only was Rex like “Oh, no you don’t” during it, when we put him down on the floor, he was roaming all around the room looking for someone to blame. Definitely not acting like yesterday.

So I still have a dog, which IS a good thing. I guess we’re still all edgy over losing Zero last month and didn’t want to get caught again not expecting the worst. But going from being what he was yesterday to what he’s been like today is, in its way, a bit nerve wracking.

How many of you twitter users be willing to pay for a service that costs $1/month? And how many people do you think would be willing to pay that for a service?

That would depend on what I would get out of it. There are assumptions that are doing a lot of the work. Elon could close on the deal right this minute, and I still wouldn’t know.

If micropayments had only been successful then yes, I would pay. As it is, the only service I have justified paying for is Scribd, the documents and ebook service. I guarantee that I can read SOMETHING once a month in the three languages I know. Can’t say the same for Netflix, etc.

Bloomberg is reporting that Adidas is gonna announce they’re dropping Kanye West (or Yeezy or Ye or whatever he’s calling himself this year).

Adidas AG plans to end its partnership with Kanye West following a rash of offensive behavior from the rapper and designer that turned a once-thriving shoe brand into a lightning rod for criticism, according to people familiar with the matter.

The German sports company may announce the move as early as Tuesday, said the people, who asked not to be identified because discussions are private. A representative for Adidas didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Adidas would join Gap Inc. and Kering SA’s Balenciaga fashion label in prematurely cutting ties with West, who now goes by Ye. The rapper has made controversial statements, including antisemitic social media posts in recent weeks, and has moved to cut ties with his corporate partners. Ye couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

The Adidas decision follows weeks of deliberations inside the company, which over the past decade has built the Yeezy line — together with Ye — into a brand that’s accounted for as much as 8% of Adidas’s total sales, according to several estimates from Wall Street analysts.

1926 - The product was originally called Baby Gays and in 1926, the labels were changed to read Q-tips® Baby Gays. Later, the name Baby Gays was discarded and Q-tips® became the identifying mark for cotton swabs. Seeing that Adidas has pulled the trigger and ended its partnership with Kanye West:

Adidas on Tuesday ended its partnership with Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, after the musician made a series of offensive and antisemitic comments.

Adidas said in a statement: “Adidas does not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech. Ye’s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, and they violate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect and fairness.”

“After a thorough review, the company has taken the decision to terminate the partnership with Ye immediately, end production of Yeezy branded products and stop all payments to Ye and his companies. Adidas will stop the Adidas Yeezy business with immediate effect.”

It said this would have a short-term negative impact of up to 250 million euros ($246 million) on net income in 2022 due to high seasonality in the fourth quarter.

Ummm… If you’ve taken the Holland Tunnel, there’s precisely zero reason to take the Goethals or the Bayonne Westbound (westbound it out of NYC, not in). Goethals and Bayonne Bridges connects Staten Island to NJ. Holland Tunnel connects Manhattan to NJ. Once you’re in NJ, you’d then connect with the NJ Turnpike that will get you down to the PA Turnpike Extension or I195 and you can get off the Turnpike and take non-toll roads.

Total cost to get from NYC (Manhattan to Philly Broad Street) on the NJ Turnpike from Holland to PA Turnpike Extension: $14.96 EZ pass peak. No outbound toll on the Holland Tunnel. Getting off at Exit 40 that connects back to southern Philly? Another $6.50.

Return trip adds the Holland Tunnel eastbound charge. But total cost round trip is fraction of what was claimed.

Hmm. Checking inbound from Detroit to Brooklyn on my EZ-Pass:
Ohio Turnpike: 8.75
Holland Tunnel: 16.00

Outbound Brooklyn to Wilkes-Barre:
Delaware Water Gap: 1.25
PA Turnpike: 1.70

Wilkes-Barre to Detroit:
Ohio Turnpike: 8.75

US inflation rate is lower than average OECD countries. That means we’re doing better than other countries. Those that are doing better than the US often have certain specific things that affect their inflation rate: they aren’t nearly as exposed to fossil fuel price shocks.

Japan and France are lower - their reliance on nuclear power helps reduce exposure to fossil fuel pricing.

In Czech, “Ostrově” would be grammatically used to reflect “in” or “from”. For example, “Jsem v Ostravě”, which would translate to “I am in Ostrava”.

So, her name would mean “Erika in Ostrov”, as Ostrov could likely be a reference to Malý Žitný ostrov, or Little Rye Island (the word ostrov meaning island) in Slovakia.

The rune-like CPAC shape was similar to another variation of odal, the one with the two additional bottom elemens (the pretty respectable company that designed the stage explained it with functional needs; though I wouldn’t exclude some progressive designer punking the right).

Note that this is not the only rune on the missile. Neo-Nazi-appropriated symbols, like the Totenkopf, the “out-of-context” runes, the Black Sun, have sure been leaking a lot into the “public square” both from the Russian and the Ukrainian side, apparently due to the PR people who release various videos and photos on social networks being ignorant (well, that’s the optimistic explanation).

Naw, this is a jury trial and there haven’t been closing arguments yet. It’s my understanding the judge has 70 to 100 pages of jury instructions to read. Then there are all the counts to get through. I’ll be surprised if the case goes to the jury today, and even after the jury gets it, it’s going to take a while for them to get through the paperwork.

Yesterday the defendant had built a box fort around his table and the judge had the bailiffs remove the boxes to a cart. You can see that action at about 1 minute into this video. (Yes, I know, it’s Fox News, but it’s a courthouse feed.)

Crush White Nationalism  Oct 25, 2022 • 8:19:19am
On Sunday, when I logged onto Twitter, the first thing I saw was someone calling me a lampshade made of human skin. Then, a comment saying I’ll be first in line when they get the ovens up and running again. Over on Instagram, where I’d posted a picture of me cuddling a goat, someone commented: “Kanye West was right about you people.”

Over on the opposite coast, I saw that the neo-Nazi group the Goyim Defense League had dropped a banner over the 405 highway in Los Angeles: “Honk if you know Kanye is right about the Jews.” Beside it was a citation of Revelations 3:9. (“Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie.”)

For weeks, Kanye West’s media tour has drawn on a plethora of very old and very lethal antisemitic stereotypes, the kind that sometimes lead to synagogue massacres: It’s the Jewish media, the Jewish record execs, and “certain businessmen” he can’t trust that have malformed his life. All of this has had some predictable consequences — suspension from Twitter and Instagram, stern condemnations from the Anti-Defamation League, canceled collaborations. It’s also led to yet more invitations from media has-beens for West, who now goes by Ye, to continue explaining himself, followed by more coverage of every new antisemitic utterance.

It may be tempting to dismiss Ye’s comments as the blather of a blowhard. Were this the extent of American animus against its tiny Jewish minority, those shrugging their shoulders might be right. But these sentiments are just the tip of a much longer spear. Ye’s comments come at a time of escalating right-wing violence, a delicate tipping point that takes little to tilt into chaos.

When someone with a big platform says the things that have led to mass slaughter of a people within living memory, it gives permission, it turns up the heat on the perpetual simmer of prejudice, and it builds hate’s strength.

Watch them even toss out a state where the GOP won just to make it look “balanced” as long as the result is the same: the GOP candidate for President wins despite the outcome of the popular/electoral vote.

No, I don’t think this is easy.

Their dalliance with Iran makes sense in light of them opposing the Great Satan in all His Manifestations.

It plays well with the Russophiles who insist that Russia is the last True Protector of Christianity after the fall of Rome and Constantinople to the Barbarian Infidels.

Actually he focuses not on Christianity but on
the so-called traditional religions as such (in Russia this primarily refers to Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Buddhism in their allegedly traditional forms), hence the mention of deshaitanization, which the American fundies are unlikely to appreciate.

10°C = time to put on another layer under your jacket
15°C = borderline for shorts and t-shirts
20°C = room temperature.

re: #250 Dangerman

From the Uber FAQ:

The booking fee is a variable fee added to every trip you take. Booking Fees help support regulatory, safety, and operational costs.

This fee scales with the distance of the trip and is variable because operational costs scale with the distance of the trip.

The minimum booking fee you can be charged is $1 and the maximum is $10.

It is included in the price you see in the app before you request a ride.

This is not meant to imply I support Uber or agree with this fee, I’m just providing some additional information.

Heh. Good scale, it goes well with my memories of Germany and the weather down near Nuremburg.

I remember reading that Fahrenheit calibrated his scale by using the temperature that salt water froze at for zero since that was commonly as “cold” a day as there was where he was. Conversely, 100 degrees was as hot as it got there and divided that range by 100. The freezing point for fresh water just happened to be 32.

Don’t know if it’s true but it makes a fun story.

+15°C People in Spain start wearing cap, gloves and quilted jackets. Finns sunbathe.
+10°C French are in vain trying to turn on their central heating. Finns are planting flowers.
+5°C Italian cars won’t start. Finns are enjoying their convertibles
0°C Water freezes. Water in the rivers of Helsinki turns a just a little bit thicker.
-5°C First victims of cold are reported in California. Finns end their Midsummer celebration.
-10°C Scotsmen turn the heat on at their houses. Finns put on their long sleeved shirts.
-20°C Swedes stay firmly indoors. Finns end the barbeque season.
-30°C Half of the Greeks freeze to death. Finns begin to dry the laundry indoors.
-40°C All the fake Santa Clauses move to South. Finnish military cancel their winter maneuvers due the too warm weather.
-50°C Danes chatter off their teeth. Finns rent DVD’s and stay indoors.
-60°C Polar bears evacuate the North Pole. Finnish military winter maneuvers start.
-70°C People living in Siberia move to Moscow. Finns get ****ed off because Finlandia Vodka can’t be kept cold outdoors.
-273,15°C Absolue Zero. Finns say to each other: “Damn it’s cold out there!”
-300°C Hell freezes over. Finland wins the Eurovision song contest.

Disney+ is getting into the timey-wimey business. The streamer will become the new home for “Doctor Who” outside of its native U.K., in a massive shift in the international presence of the long-running British TV institution. The news was announced by Ncuti Gatwa, who is set to become the 15th Doctor, in an interview on “Live with Kelly and Ryan” on Tuesday.

Under this new deal — made by the BBC and Disney Branded Entertainment — new episodes of “Doctor Who” will stream on Disney+ in the United States and all international markets in which the streamer is available. In the U.K. and Ireland, the sci-fi series will continue to air exclusively on the BBC. The deal will begin in November 2023 to coincide with the three specials set to air for the show’s 60th anniversary, and will continue when the show returns for its 14th series.

-40 (°F or C) is generally the rule here, unless a school has problems with freezing water pipes due to cold. In January, lows routinely dip into the -30’s Fahrenheit, but most commercial vehicles have block heaters - and many consumer ones, too.

Saw that a dozen eggs cost 3.83 at Walmart today. I think this seems exorbitant only because shoppers have become accustomed to very cheap eggs in recent years. The price of eggs, even with recent increases, has not in fact kept pace with inflation (765%
since 1970).
How Much A Dozen Eggs Cost The Year You Were Born
(I was not born in 1970 btw, it just seemed a convenient reference point as the beginning point of my adult life.)

It is more than a gallon of gasoline, at least here in Texas, but It is not twice as much, and that is typically what eggs cost relative to gasoline in the past. In 1970, for example, eggs were 60 cents a dozen, gas was about 32 cents a gallon. The disparity was even higher in 1940, 33 cents for eggs, 14 cents for gas. Thirty three cents was quite a bit of money in 1940.

I’m belaboring this because it represents the kind of perspective that the Republican base seems to lack and that lying Republican activists and media shills revel in exploiting. They compare the price of gasoline now to what it was at the height of covid in 2020, ignoring that it was a fair amount higher in abolute terms several times before that (3.55 in December 2004, for instance) and much higher relative to inflation.

Egg prices and prices for poultry are going to be higher for two specific reasons:

Droughts in producing regions, including feed stock.
Avian flu.

The latter has caused producers to cull their flocks significantly, and that means higher prices. It also is a result of the pandemic and shifting needs so that some kinds of poultry products are more available than others.
