If it weren’t for the cops, I’d want Louise to pull the trigger.

Jerry and Ellen Gilland were married in 1969, two years before Louise and I tied the knot, them in Florida and us in Detroit. They bounced around Florida for a few years, living in Sorrento, Mount Plymouth, and Orlando before settling in New Smyrna Beach where they lived when Jerry started getting really sick.

Really sick as in terminally ill. They tried to handle his illness at home, but around Christmas Jerry started going downhill fast. He told Ellen he couldn’t handle the situation and planned to shoot himself to end it all when things got so bad there was no point in continuing to live, infirm and in pain. After 52 years of marriage, Ellen understood.

But, finally, they couldn’t handle the situation at home: Jerry was admitted to AdventHealth Hospital in Daytona Beach and put in a room on the 11th floor, which was almost entirely occupied by people waiting to die.

Jerry continued to deteriorate and finally, last weekend, asked Ellen to bring their gun into the hospital so he could end his own life. She agreed and brought in the weapon, but Jerry was so weak he couldn’t lift it to his own head. So, in what was apparently a final act of love and compassion after all those years together, she fired the shot for him that ended his misery.

Her plan, she told police, was to kill herself next: her life partner was gone and she’d just committed what everybody from their church to the State of Florida said was an unpardonable crime. But she just couldn’t do it.

Alerted by the hospital that a patient had been shot on the 11th floor, a Daytona Beach Police SWAT team of men armed with automatic weapons and body armor crashed the door, threw in explosive flash-bang grenades, and shot Ellen with a painful metal-filled, plastic-coated “non-lethal” round sometimes euphemistically called a “beanbag.”
She’s now in jail without bond, facing charges of first-degree murder. No husband, no family, no friends. Alone. Miserable. No doubt terrified. And in pain from being shot by the police.

Some people say bowling alleys
got big lanes
(Got big lanes)

Some people say that bowling alleys
all look the same
(Look the same)

There’s not a line that goes here
That rhymes with anything

jeebus, this sucks

LARGO, Fla. — In 2020 criminal and bankruptcy lawyers took a big hit. According to a report from U.S. Courts, criminal and bankruptcy cases were down about 11% because of the pandemic. But, lawyers handling divorces and pets have been busy.

“People were at home,” said lawyer April Goodwin.

Goodwin owns the Goodwin Law Firm in Largo, Florida. She has owned her own firm since 2015 and primarily handled employment and civil rights cases. Sometime after, she decided to add pet law to the list.

“I added it to the website, and slowly started getting cases,” she said. “But in 2020, it really took off.”

“People were having more opportunities to fight with their significant other, soon-to-be ex-significant other, or family members, and neighbors over pets. Those are our biggest cases,” she added.

About a year ago, Charles Perkins reached out to Goodwin for help with an issue involving his family’s pet duck, named Fat Duck Perkins.

They got into a dispute with their old apartment complex.

“I cried. I was upset. I thought I was going to die of a heart attack,” Charles Perkins said. “It was very upsetting for me.”

He said Fat Duck Perkins came to their family when she was just a baby. They took her in, and she’s been with them for five years. They love her like family, which is why they fought for her.

“If you love that animal and you care about that animal, you’re going to have to defend them,” he said. “And protect them as much as you can.”

Perkins said he thought they would lose the fight until he found Goodwin’s law firm.

“I never knew anything like pet law even existed,” he said.

Here’s something I didn’t reckon on - switching to Cloudflare has apparently caused the server to start reporting IP addresses in IPv6 format, so stats pages and such that record IPs are suddenly not working because that field in the database is set to be a maximum of 16 characters, and IPv6 addresses can be 39 characters. Ouch.

Changes in the atmosphere - During the Carboniferous and Permian periods, Earth’s air contained 31-35% oxygen, as compared to just 21% oxygen in the air today. That allowed bigger bugs since without lungs they “breath” through hole in their exoskeleton.

Also flying dinosaurs evolved and they were the predators that the bugs hadn’t had before.

I still maintain that the only reason any of this is getting traction is because Trump fucked up so spectacularly by willfully retaining classified documents and even having the guts to sue the government to try to get them back. Government employees unintentionally misplacing classified documents seems to be a far more common occurrence than at least I thought.

Might have been because Cloudflare once provided DDOS protection to The Daily Stormer and 8chan, only dumping them once people found out about it and public backlash overrode their “we protect free speech, even that we don’t agree with” stance.

blog.cloudflare.com

arstechnica.com

blog.cloudflare.com

arstechnica.com

Thing is, I use Cloudflare for dynamic DNS and DDOS protection for my Unraid server setup (Plex, Nextcloud, etc.), as well as their public DNS servers (along with Google’s) for my home network, even after their handwringing about dumping The Daily Stormer and 8chan, because it’s free, really good, and easy to use; there’s not really another company that does all that Cloudflare does as well as they do that’s free or cheap for home users.

That is the most likely outcome regardless of our feelings about Elon himself. The logistics of a trip to Mars are such that getting there is relatively easy, but getting back is a BIG FUCKING PROBLEM. The reason why we have never returned any samples from Mars - despite the fact that doing so would be immensely valuable - is because of how big a headache that return trip is to arrange.

There’s that, there’s the radiation people will be exposed to on the ~3 month journey through empty space, and THEN there’s the fact that orbital mechanics mean that they’ll be waiting a while on Mars for a return trip window to open. I have to go look it up now, but I seem to recall something about an optimal return trip window would come about some 2 Earth years after arrival.

The closest orbit between the two planets occurs about every 18 months.

Dopamine Fish  Jan 25, 2023 • 10:51:30am

re: #192 Belafon

The closest orbit between the two planets occurs about every 18 months.

From an orbital mechanics post on Stack Exchange:

From the Case for Mars, which briefly discusses the plan, here are some dates. Both missions take about 6 months to arrive. The Conjunction mission has 550 days on Mars, the Opposition mission has 30 days. The Conjunction mission takes about the same time to return to Earth, 6 months, while the Opposition takes about 14 months return time. It also requires about 2 km/s more delta v to return.

So I underestimated the trip TO Mars (6 months vs 3 months), then the optimal launch window to return to Earth in the shortest spaceflight would require an on-planet duration of 550 days, whereas you could spend over a year in space on the return trip but only 30 days on-planet (and require much more fuel for said trip).

Edit: Link here: space.stackexchange.com

Belafon  Jan 25, 2023 • 10:52:21am

I would personally love to go to Mars, but unless we decided as a world that there was an urgency to do it, I won’t make it. What I actually think we will need to do first is send robots to build living and work areas first. It could be done, but we would have to decide to do that.

Yep. You leave earth so that you arrive at Mars about the same time that the two planets are closest. And then, if you want to do the short trip, you leave Mars in the same way. Kind of like swimming across a river. If you want to end up at a particular point, you move upstream far enough so that, to you, you’re swimming straight across.

Yep, exactly. And because Mars’s orbit is slower than ours (being further out in the Solar System), it’s a longer wait to get back than it is to get there. And we haven’t even touched the logistics of making sure that there’s fuel and supplies at Mars for the return trip to be able to carry that much weight. Passengers and science cargo are extremely expensive in terms of fuel.
