And Now: The NEW SCIENCE of Moon Formation

Science • Views: 12,522

Einstein once asked whether “the moon exists only when I look at it?”. It was rhetorical objection to the idea that measurement in quantum mechanics causes reality to become real. But there was a time when the moon didn’t exist, and then hours later suddenly did. At least, according to the latest simulations of its formation.

Georgia grand jury forewoman Emily Kohrs’ decision to go on TV and discuss certain aspects of the special grand jury investigating election misconduct in the state has triggered outrage from legal experts, many of whom have argued it could undermine any indictments that investigation ultimately produces.

And according to CBS News’ Robert Costa, lawyers representing some Trump allies involved in the probe are planning to use that interview as a basis of challenging any indictments their clients may face.

But not so fast, argues former federal prosecutor Shan Wu in an article for The Daily Beast. Kohrs’ interview is a potential headache for Georgia prosecutors — but it probably won’t doom upcoming indictments.

“To start with, Kohrs was the foreperson of a special grand jury that will produce only a report and recommendations. The special grand jury cannot issue indictments because the Georgia case precedent set by the Georgia Court of Appeals in Kennerly v. Georgia does not allow special grand juries to indict,” wrote Wu. “This offers insulation from any eventual charging decision, because if Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis wants to charge, she must present evidence to a different non-special grand jury that is empowered to indict.”

That didn’t last long.

Elon Musk announced during a joint press conference with California Gov. Gavin Newsom that Tesla would be returning its global engineering headquarters to California, two years after a dramatic exit that saw the electric car company leave the Golden State for a facility in Austin, Texas.

Tesla will open up shop in the former home of Hewlett Packard in Palo Alto, Musk said. The facility will serve as the company’s engineering headquarters while the corporate headquarters remains in Austin.

The move returns Tesla to the world’s center of technology and innovation, and puts Musk in closer to proximity to the headquarters of Twitter, which the billionaire tech entrepreneur purchased last year in a massive social media shakeup.

Musk called the move into HP’s old building a “poetic transition from the company that founded Silicon Valley to Tesla.”

Newsom applauded the decision to return Tesla to California, saying that the state remains on the forefront of “discovery and new ideas and innovation.”

The killer came back to kill some more.

A Florida man suspected of killing a woman Wednesday returned to the scene hours later and shot four other people, killing a 9-year-old girl and a television news journalist, the Orange County sheriff said.

A Spectrum News 13 crew was in Pine Hills shortly after 4 p.m. covering the slaying of a woman in her 20s who had been found shot in that area around 11 a.m., Sheriff John Mina said.

Keith Melvin Moses, the 19-year-old suspect in the woman’s killing, returned to the scene and fired at the reporter and photographer who were in or near a vehicle, one of whom later died, Mina said.

Moses then went to a nearby home, walked inside and shot a mother and her 9-year-old daughter, the sheriff said. The girl died.

He was arrested in the area and is being charged in the initial slaying, Mina said. Moses will be charged in the four other shootings later, the sheriff said.

Libertarianism: You’re free to do anything you want, as long as you don’t hurt anyone else, and by the way you’re going to Hell if you don’t exactly follow my particular version of Christianity. Christian Nationalists? Hell. Liberal Christians? Hell. Support the government? You fail the First Commandment. Hell. Supporters of secularism (separation of Church and State)? Well the state shouldn’t exist and neither should the separation, so you’re going to Hell.

Suspect in Colorado Springs LGBTQ nightclub shooting ran a neo-Nazi site, detective testifies

The 22-year-old accused of carrying out the deadly mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs in November ran a neo-Nazi website and used gay and racial slurs while gaming online, a police detective testified Wednesday.

Anderson Lee Aldrich used racial slurs while gaming, posted an image of a rifle scope trained on a gay pride parade and used a homophobic slur when referring to someone who was gay, Detective Rebecca Joines testified on the first day of a three-day trial to determine if there’s enough evidence to warrant hate crime charges against Aldrich.

Aldrich, who wore an orange jail jumpsuit at the hearing and cried at times, identifies as nonbinary and uses the pronouns they and them. Joines said another witness told investigators that Aldrich said their mother, Laura Voepel, is nonbinary and forced them to go to LGBTQ clubs.

Bullshit. Austin is a breath of breathable Liberal air in a stifling Conservative state. We also have no personal income tax, which makes many engineers’ dicks get hard or vajes get wet. Does your broad brush cover the State? Mostly, by area. Does it relate directly to Austin?

Charlie Kirk Claims GA Jury Forewoman is ‘Witch’ Trying to ‘Put Spell’ on Trump, Cites Her Pinterest Posts About ‘Herbs’ (Mediatite, February 22, 2023)

(video starts at 9:02 of the 2:58:50 “Charlie Kirk Show”)

Political commentator Charlie Kirk apparently believes the Georgia jury forewoman involved in the election crimes case regarding Trump is a practicing witch.

Emily Kohrs — or, as Kirk has affectionately labeled her, “Harry Potter Girl” — appeared on various news outlets Tuesday offering an inside look at the grand jury investigation of Trump’s effort to overturn election results in Georgia.

After her media appearances were circulated far and wide, Kirk suggested that Kohrs was a closeted “witch,” thanks in part to the discovery of her Pinterest page.

On the Wednesday edition of The Charlie Kirk Show, Kirk broke down his findings and even shared a personal story of a witch encounter he claimed to have had in 2021.

IANAL but it was troubling to watch the Georgia grand jury foreperson speak out about the hearings. It would seem preferable that the jury not discuss the hearings at this time.

The statements that she did make about a specific witness - Pat Cipillone - were basically how much she admired him. One of the few people in the Trump team who left without damage to his reputation, at least among sane citizens.

Huh. Things I learned. Yesterday it was the Boy Scouts being used as strikebreakers, today it’s Blue Shield covered female genital mutilation in the USA until 1977.

FGM was also a common practice in the UK and USA.

The Ongoing Practice of Female Genital Mutilation (JTSOR, April 27, 2017)

According to the sex researcher Elizabeth Sheehan, “Westerners… view [female circumcision] as being rooted in ideologies totally foreign to those in the West.” Sheehan explains in the Medical Anthropology Newsletter that such surgeries were performed in the U.S. and the U.K. from the 1800s all the way through to the 1970s. As Nagarwala’s arrest (and the subsequent arrest of another doctor) demonstrates, forms of it continue to this day.

As practised in the USA and UK, it was to relieve “irritation” (masturbation) and “hysteria” in girls (similar to the arguments for MGM).

Moreover, some charitable organisations have stopped using “mutilation” for fear of offending Muslims, Christians, and Jews, preferring instead terms like “cutting.”

I had offers to attend grad school in Austin TX and Tucson AZ and chose the latter.

I think that some of it was indeed Elon leveraging some tax breaks but Texas is not the place of choice for many people who have the option of choosing where they work.

Through most of the 20th century, Mexican elections were run by officials answerable to the Mexican president. The president told the officials the result he wanted. They delivered it.

I have to assume they didn’t care as much, since the whole city was being destroyed, though you’d think they would have a care that they didn’t accidentally kill some of the workers; one of the controlled demolitions in the first half barely looked “controlled,” and you could see guys scrambling to get away from the point of impact of the top half of the building.

The Republican Party is literally trying to unroll all the progressive civil rights advances of the last 70 years. They seem to be convinced this is their time.

The GOP has convinced itself that they’re the real minority and that they have to protect their rights above all else. They’re a white nationalist fascist party intent on rolling back rights for women and minorities and LGBTQ+ precisely because they think that somehow undermines the rights of white men (and keeps said white men engaged and enraged to act on their violent fantasies courtesy of GOP also pushing gun sales to detriment of public health and safety).

Velveeta was originally created as a way of utilizing damaged wheels of cheese that were returned unsold to the dairy. It was once a highly prized delicacy, and was even exported abroad.

But the recipe was later changed so that it no longer had anything to do with what we generally know as cheese.

Well look who provides security for Natasha Sinema!

It’s…TOOLSI’S SISTER!

thedailybeast.com

A new report from The Daily Beast is raising questions about an unusual arrangement for personal security between Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) and a company owned by the sister of Tulsi Gabbard.

According to the report, Sinema’s campaign finance committees have forked over more than $300,000 to a company called TOA Group LLC whose sole executive is Vrindivan Gabbard Bellord, the sister of the former Hawaii Democratic congresswoman who has since become a far-right Fox News contributor.

“Since fall 2021, Bellord has been employed as the ‘security director’ in Sinema’s Senate office, a role that has paid her over $50,000, according to Senate records,” the publication writes. “Bellord has also apparently been the exclusive security provider to Sinema’s campaign. She appears to have no other clients aside from the Arizona senator.”

The report goes on to document the close relationship that Gabbard and Sinema forged while the two began serving in the House of Representatives in 2013. The two women also share a penchant for being willing to go against their party, although Sinema, unlike Gabbard, has not yet parroted talking points that echo Kremlin propaganda.

Here’s Ben Stein’s Moving Black History Month Tribute To Aunt Jemima. Yes, F*cking Aunt Jemima. (Wonkette, today)

It’s the last week of Black History Month, and conservatives are squeezing in as many indignities as they can before we head into March. Ben Stein — that guy from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off — posted a video on Donald Trump’s designer imposter Twitter site, Truth Social, where he lamented the loss of his beloved fantasy mammy Aunt Jemima.

Stein announced he was about to make “breakfast for dinner,” which is his right. I’ve long argued that “breakfast” and “dinner” are not defined by their menu but the time of day when you have the meal. I don’t care if you’re eating pancakes or eggs and bacon. That’s not breakfast for dinner. It’s dinner for dinner. But that’s a philosophical debate for another time.

In the video that even the New York Post calls “bizarre,” Stein cradled a bottle of syrup and swooned, “Aunt Jemima, yummy, pancake syrup. Now, this used to show a large African American woman chef, but because of the inherent racism of Americans’ corporate culture, they decided to make it a white person, or maybe no person at all.” He went on: “But, I prefer when it was a Black person, showing their incredible skill at making pancakes. So, God bless you all and have a good evening.”

And now everything has ghost peppers, angry sauce and the like. I’m thinking our taste buds have gone kaput and spice is the only thing we can manage now for “flavor”.

In part because “death sauce” is easy. Plus you can market it as “too hot for you to handle!” and other macho BS.

Balancing a hot sauce/spice mix is a delicate thing if you are trying to create a flavor enhancement. And people’s appetite or tolerance for the heat effects varies from person to person and also based upon the meal itself since you can server accompanying dishes that enhance or reduce the spice effects.

My general approach is to create dishes that I would rate “1 or 2- alarm” since I know I can add a shake or additional powder or a bit of liquid hot sauce to take it up a notch. And I also like using an array of spices to get the “heat” since they work and taste differently and can be manipulated to hit one’s taste buds in a sequence instead of simply obliterating them.

We were at my in-laws a few Thanksgivings ago, which means forced Fox News viewings. Stein was brought in as a pundit for a segment for whatever ‘news’ show was on at 6:30 or so.

It was really, really sad. The last time I had probably seen him was on Win Ben Stein’s Money on Comedy Central nearly 30 years ago. Age messes up us all to a degree, but Stein was clearly not well. I’m pretty sure he dozed off during the five minute segment, and spent a portion of it complaining about his adult son living with him and his wife.

Swear to God, he basically said “The only reason he’s here is because my wife won’t let me kick him out.” He literally did use the phrase “Happy wife, happy life.”

I know the guy has some really hardcore, out-there views, but man, it was tough to watch.

They were giggling in a smoke-filled room when they chose that title.

A bill being considered in the state legislature would create an official Connecticut cannabis ombudsman, what Majority Leader Jason Rojas described as a liaison between medical cannabis patients and the state.

“We’re hearing about supply challenges and medical patients not being able to get what they want,” Rojas said. “I think having a dedicated person who’s there to answer questions to medical patients is really the intent of this.”

Rojas, D-East Hartford, acknowledged that it is the responsibility of the state’s licensed growers to provide for the medical market.

Connecticut law requires cannabis growers to submit a “medical cannabis preservation plan,” to “ensure against supply shortages of medical marijuana products, which shall be approved or denied at the commissioner’s discretion.”

With concerns about medical cannabis supply shortage, CT lawmakers look to create ombudsman job (CT Post)

The Anglican Church in Britain is going through a schism where the head of the church is regarded by many conservative priests and congregations as a dangerous lefty radical. Sanctifying same-sex marriages and anointing women priests and bishops is a step too far for them.

This is not going to end well for him. It’s not advisable to take the stand when everything you say can be used against you, and you might walk right into even more trouble depending on how skilled the prosecutors are in asking questions (and the defense attorney might likewise open the door to allowing prosecutors to grill him on the line of questioning).

With a national agenda and a state-by-state focus, NACL is emulating the American Legislative Exchange Council. An infamous corporate front group, ALEC pioneered the strategy of pushing for national political goals by advancing carbon-copy bills through state legislatures. But where ALEC serves far-right billionaire masters and polluting special interests, NACL sees itself as serving the Lord on high. I haven’t seen Quantumania, but Wakanda Forever looks great, so I guess the priorities show in both films.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has already cemented itself as one of the lowest performing Marvel Cinematic Universe films of all-time. A report from Vulture reveals a big reason why.

Star-studded MCU sequel films Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania were both in post-production around the same time, leaving the former to be prioritized over the latter.

Even though Ant-Man 3 has done well so far in the box office since its February 17 North American release, the film has suffered when it comes to critical feedback and Rotten Tomato score, especially compared to those of Wakanda Forever. But evidently, the root of the issue stems from the Ant-Man workers’ experiences during post, as highlighted by some of the actual VFX team at hard work behind the scenes.

The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals is hearing arguments on Thursday over whether to allow federal prosecutors to access the cell phone of Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA).

The DOJ wants access to Perry’s phone as part of its investigation into President Trump’s attempt to reverse his loss in the 2020 election.

Perry played a key role in the plot. He helped connect Trump with a DOJ official named Jeffrey Bossert Clark, who launched a failed attempt to become attorney general as part of a broader plot to use the DOJ to intervene in the election outcome. Perry also advanced a series of wild claims about the election, including that an Italian defense contractor used military satellites to zap votes away from Trump in swing states.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has obtained leaked chat messages purportedly showing avowed neo-Nazi leader Brandon Russell encouraging his followers to attack critical pieces of American infrastructure with the hopes of sparking a race war.

The SPLC says the chats show that Russell, who was indicted earlier this year for a plot to attack a series of substations that serve the city of Baltimore, saw the attacks as crucial for his goal of creating racial Armageddon in the United States.

Among other things, the chats show Russell and his allies sharing infrastructure maps with one another with a particular focus on power substations and railways.

The hope was to begin the attacks and then inspire copycats to take matters into their own hands at other locations.

What is the point of a Constitution when we cannot understand or agree on how it and its amendments apply to our interactions and public discourse?

The first clause of the German Constitution reads:

A clause sadly lacking although it should be so self-evident as to not be needed (Germany’s history made this clause a necessity)

They didn’t catch that.

They probably lack a good science education. But I wouldn’t be surprised if someone there thought it would be clever.

Florida is an “Open Carry” “Stand Your Ground” state, is it not?

My son & other IDF vets should get the band back together and show up in force wherever these shitgoblins put on their little street theater.

Hell if I ran into these guys during my continued stay here in Florida I have an aluminum cane that could inflict some damage.

Sad factoid. The man she is clobbering was arrested for torturing and killing a gay Jew within a year of that picture.

From the same article, a target on both our backs, Joe.

NACL legislators must also agree to a mission statement that inveighs against the “spiritual decay of our culture (including churches).” It blasts the aggression of “atheists and anti-Christian groups” and it blames these “godless” entities for “trampling on the Christian liberty we have enjoyed in this country for centuries.” Despite this decried downfall, it proposes that “the fervent prayer and action of the Christian remnant in America can make a positive difference.”

My brother from Berlin is coming to see me. He flew into Portland yesterday. Portland has had the second snowiest 24 hours since they started keeping track at the airport in 1939. I hope he can get out.

As is common lately, I am off by a day. He flies in today. Some flights have already been cancelled. I am reminded of a dad joke I saw yesterday;

We are each going to buy a pair of glasses.
After that?
We’ll see.

Republicans are in ‘intellectual collapse’ as they push bans on everything that scares them

Republicans are facing an “intellectual collapse” — and their turn to increasingly anti-democracy and anti-free speech policies is the result of that, argued MSNBC’s Joy Reid on Wednesday.

It also she was a Polish Jew. It does say she died by suicide three years after the photograph by jumping from the town water tower.

Few things from the article, first I always thought that was a much older picture probably because it’s black and white and how she is dressed, it really doesn’t have a mid 80’s vibe to it. I also always thought she was a much older lady.

Just got in from dealing with the snowfall. I was unable to open my driveway all the way; the drift downstream of the snowplow (e.g. the direction in which it is pushing snow) is so deep, I was having to shovel off the top half of it in order to get the snowblower through it. By the time I got to that cut, I’d had enough. The pile of tailings at the top of the driveway, where it is deepest, is nearly 6’ tall now. That was a pretty good snowfall, despite all my friends and cow-orkers who insist on saying the storm was overblown.

re: #185 The Pie Overlord!

My bottle of pancake syrup has a flag of Canada on the label. Pure maple deliciousness, none of that HFCS for me!

Years ago, I used to make an annual summer drive up to the Adirondacks, Lake George, Lake Champlain, Rutland, Vermont, etc. I found it interesting to check out various French and Indian War/7 Years War and Revolutionary War sites.

While up there, I found a brand of maple syrup titled “Northern Comfort”. I am not an expert in Maple syrup but, it was good when I had to give a gag gift.

There used to also be tasting kits with samples of all the different grades of maple syrup.

Something I have not yet tried, but have always meant to was “Sap Beer”. Made, iirc, of the last maple sap that was not used for making syrup.

Also of note, a lot of maple syrup used to be farmed in the Pennsylvania Appalachians and then shipped north to bottlers in Vermont and Canada.
