This may be the only account that gets an unpaid-for gold checkmark on Twitter that I have zero problem with. See the second tweet for why.

One of the plot points is that Anya needs to get eight Stella Stars so she can join a group of elite scholars to help her spy father with his job. (Dad doesn’t know that she’s an esper.) Currently she has two. But she has to also avoid getting Tonitrus Bolts, getting eight of those will get her expelled. Currently she has at least one.

Bwa-ha-ha!!!

‘Dark Brandon’ meme makes an appearance on Biden’s new campaign website

President Biden announced on Tuesday that he’s officially running for reelection in 2024 and with that comes a brand new campaign website.

joebiden.com has all of the things one might expect: photos of the 80-year-old candidate, a campaign video and pleas for donations. And there’s something else for those who accidentally navigate to a non-existent page. Instead of a plain 404 error, visitors get an eyeful of Biden’s alter ego, “Dark Brandon,” featuring beaming red laser eyes.

“Let’s get you back on the rails,” appears below the smiling, suited image of the president and likely a reference to Biden’s love of Amtrak.

This should dismiss the notion that uncrewed science missions are easier, less risky and more “noble” or “worthy” than crewed missions. The loss of the Hakuto lander sucks in every way. I don’t know how ispace is doing financially, but several, more than a handful, of space firms have closed their doors after a launch failure.

Interesting post regarding AI scrapers

Img2dataset will attempt to scrape images from any site unless site owners add https headers like “X-Robots-Tag: noai,” and “X-Robots-Tag: noindex.” That means that the onus is on site owners, many of whom probably don’t even know img2dataset exists, to opt out of img2dataset rather than opt in.

On Sunday, Terence Eden posted a comment on the Github page, saying that the tool “hammered” several of his sites and requesting that it be made opt-in.

“I don’t understand why the onus is on me to add a new header to my sites opting out of this tool,” Eden said. “Please can you change the default behaviour so that it will only work on sites which set the X-Robots-Tag: YesAI?”

“If you don’t wish for people to view images from your website, the best way is to turn it off,” Beaumont replied. Beaumont did not respond to a request for comment.

When Eden and other Github commenters pushed back, Beaumont said it would be “unethical” to make img2dataset opt-in rather than opt-out.

No, it wouldn’t be unusable, they just wouldn’t get free and indiscriminate data. This is basically a rehash of robots.txt, but for AI. Just like robots.txt, the way it will evolve is that the “good” AI bots will use an opt-in mechanism, and the unscrupulous “bad” AI bots will intentionally ignore whatever opt-in mechanism is settled on. Eventually, hosting providers will implement standard blocking mechanisms to prevent the unscrupulous ones from being able to scrape customers’ data, unless explicitly opted into via a site setting.

(Which flattened rather quickly. And, of course, it was pouring rain heavily at the time. I was able to pull into a shopping center parking lot in order to change the tire fortunately.)

So I mentioned the location to her as we all traveled that route quite often. She got that “Cool! We have a highway defect to kill!” glint in her eye. But the next time I saw her, she was all bummed out because it turned out to be a county road.

And then there was the time on US 22-30 just outside of Pittsburgh…

re: #38 Teukka

ETA - Let me try to clean this up. Hopefully it makes better sense.

Threats to go nuclear have been a standard go to for Putin for a long time. And they have been the major argument put forth in the West on why NATO should not support Ukraine. (And, also why NATO should just self deter and give up opposing anything Russia wants.)

The Biden Administration has been very careful about defining clear boundaries with Russia on the Ukraine conflict. Particularly regarding “external to Russia things” that might threaten Putin’s regime’s survival.

Which is why there are US imposed constraints on Ukrainian actions against Russia.

And also to keep Russia fully informed about US positions. For example, what would happen if Russia were to detonate a nuclear weapon in Ukraine.

The working assumption is that Putin’s Russia may be incompetent, but it isn’t insane and has no interest in committing suicide.

This leads to the conclusion that the US had made very clear to Putin that it has no intent to overthrow him. And that any threats to his regime are internal, not external.

Instead of hating themselves for being failures, the Republicans have designated groups of other people for them to hate.

It’s more that instead of helping these people get jobs and provide for their families, the GOP has discovered — as others before them — it’s a lot cheaper to teach people to hate others and blame them for their lot in life instead of working to ameliorate their conditions. After all, dealing with the real causes may mean that billionaires and multi-millionaires may have to sacrifice a little of their wealth — and we cannot have that. Where’s Robespierre now that we need him?

The Make America Great Again, or ‘MAGA,’ movement, which takes its name from Trump’s first campaign slogan, was the least popular individual or group tested in the new survey. Just 24% of Americans have positive views of the movement, while 45% voice negative views.

These numbers come as President Joe Biden made Trump — and his movement — the centerpiece of his re-election launch video on Tuesday.

Biden in his video that “MAGA extremists are lining up to take those bedrock freedoms away.” Biden and his fellow Democrats often use the term “MAGA” as a catch-all to describe pro-Trump Republicans who embrace the former president’s more extreme positions, including his false claims that the 2020 election was stolen.

A slight majority of Republicans — 52% — view the MAGA movement positively, as well as 53% of those who define themselves as conservative.

Independents also rated the movement negatively, with just 12% viewing it positively, while 45% say they have negative views of the movement.

It’s that whole Wittgenstein thing where words can actually mean anything, so a person can say something that lexically is “okay” but actually is quite hostile or negative.

And you’re right on the dot: like a lot of reactionary self-pity (I’m being persecuted for views! What views in particular) there’s a semantic game being played, where you’re not allowed to apply context to what they say.

Who knew, Elon’s grandstanding about protecting the kids was just a charade…

This wasn’t unexpected for me. Things like this happen when people who believe what they’re doing is the right but knows jack shit.
People often ask why child predators can escape undetected for so long. One part is the perpetrator trying to pressure the child to secrecy. But the sad truth is that the biggest part is that people are being tricked into looking to look for the wrong suspects. Leading to people not seeing what’s right under their noses.
And for every case that comes to light like this, there’s at least nine more we don’t know of.

And people wonder why I get vitriolic about the recent trend of calling certain minority groups “groomers”…
It dilutes what victims of CSA experience, and it diverts attention away from dangerous individuals.

He is the modern GOP. They all believe in this, in eliminating woman’s right of choice. Unless citizens stop voting for Republicans, it’s hard to see how anything approaching a democracy can survive here. Given the widespread voter suppression and gerrymandering approved by this most vile of Supreme Courts, it’s hard to see any remedy that can save this nation — except if Alito and Thomas are struck by a bolt of lightning and Feinstein recovers enough to return to the Senate.

The US did the trouncing of the confederacy, but failed to provide enough supervision for a decent recovery in the South. I think the North was afraid of looking bad if they did what was needed. There is a fairy tale the press likes to tell itself (and the public) about the Republican Party. Ready? Here it goes:

Once upon a time in America, there were two political parties. One was liberal and one was conservative. The parties were mirror images of each other, practically identical in every way. If Republicans had a scandal, Democrats were corrupt, too. If Republicans brought Washington to a standstill, Democrats were also to blame. Everything was perfectly balanced and the GOP was a perfectly normal political party.

This mirror was a one-way mirror, though and the “balance” was noticeably tilted in favor of the GOP. Whereas everything Republicans did was magically reflected in the Democratic Party, the reverse was not true. This was especially the case when it came to the more militant factions of the parties.

You see, only Democrats had “radicals” and “extremists.” This probably had something to do with the fact that Democratic radicals wanted universal healthcare and Republican radicals, which did not exist according to the press, wanted to make every known form of contraception illegal and kill all the Jews. It’s a little difficult to compare these two extremes and insist they are the same so the press simply pretended the Republican Party didn’t really have an extremist wing.

Then came Donald Trump. The fairy tale ended forever and a new one began…

Latest on laser fusion ignition:

Fluor to Bolster Commercialization of Laser Fusion Power

“Under the MOU, Fluor will leverage its global experience in developing and constructing complex, large-scale facilities to provide preliminary design and engineering to support the development of Longview’s fusion-powered plant,” Fluor said.

Longview’s laser fusion power plants are based directly on the experimental demonstration of fusion ignition at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s (LLNL’s) NIF. The company is notably headed by Dr. Edward Moses, former NIF & NIF Photon Science principal associate director, who managed the design and construction of the NIF from 2007 to 2013. Under his watch, NIF began full operations in March 2009 and quickly set world records for neutron yield from laser-driven fusion fuel capsules and laser energy delivered to inertial confinement fusion (ICF) targets.

NIF, the size of a sports stadium, today uses its 192 powerful laser beams to create pressures and temperatures intense enough to fuse the nuclei of hydrogen atoms—and release many times more energy than the laser energy required to initiate a reaction. The complex reaction is known as “fusion ignition.”

Bernie Sanders would be 87 on Inauguration day if he won the 2028 election.

And your point is? The first-ever centenarian Senator was, IIRC, Jesse Helms who got re-elected in his late 90s. A gerontocracy is a valid democratic system. It may not be desirable but it can be functional.

Latest on laser fusion ignition:

I think I saw the acronym “MOU” in there. Is that a Memorandum Of Understanding, perchance?

The nuclear business is rife with MOUs that never result in anything tangible, accompanied by grip-and-grin photo opportunities and dignified signing of leather-bound documents in front of arrays of national flags. They mean buggerall in the grand scheme of things. Small Modular Reactor (SMR) and Liquid Fluorine Thorium Reactor (LFTR) “projects” are particularly prone to the MOU kiss of death.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida prosecutor has ordered an investigation after a homeowner fired shots into a couple’s car when they mistakenly turned onto his property while making a late-night Instacart delivery. Police closed the case without consulting the state attorney’s office.

*snip*

Broward County State Attorney Harold Pryor issued a statement saying police investigators never contacted his office about the April 15 shooting in Southwest Ranches that put at least two bullets into the car driven by 19-year-old Waldes Thomas Jr., who was with his 18-year-old girlfriend, Diamond Darville.

Pryor said his staff members were unaware of the shooting until they were contacted Friday by a reporter from WTVJ-TV, who interviewed the couple. The Davie Police Department has a contract with Southwest Ranches to provide service.

Welcome to Texas: “we don’t need no stinking regulations. We privatize the profits and socialize the costs of subsequent air, water and brownfield pollution cleanup.”

FWIW, ~10 years ago, there was a push to develop a spaceport in Camden County GA to bring in high tech jobs and stimulate the local economy.

Back in the day, when Cape Canaveral was chosen for the east coast rocket launch site, Camden County had been the 2nd choice.

The backers of the new spaceport had the money and brought in the technological and ecological expertise. The old money on Cumberland island killed the project.

When I lived west of Philly the extended drains from the gutters were used by the chipmunks like that as well. And the local cats (including mine who got limited outdoor time) knew it as well.

If there was any snow on the ground you could see the trail one of them made to and from a drain entrance and the neighbor’s bird feeders.

Ex-New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to join Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — Former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who helped lead her country through a devastating mass shooting, will be joining Harvard University later this year, Kennedy School Dean Douglas Elmendorf said Tuesday.

Ardern, a global icon of the left and an inspiration to women around the world, has been appointed to dual fellowships at the Harvard Kennedy School. She will serve as the 2023 Angelopoulos Global Public Leaders Fellow and a Hauser Leader in the school’s Center for Public Leadership beginning this fall.

“Jacinda Ardern showed the world strong and empathetic political leadership,” Elmendorf said in statement, adding that Ardern will “bring important insights for our students and will generate vital conversations about the public policy choices facing leaders at all levels.”
