NASA’s most advanced spacecraft for solar exploration just made another close flyby of the sun.

The Parker Solar Probe conducted its 16th perihelion pass on Thursday morning (June 22), cruising through the sun’s superhot outer atmosphere, called the corona.

As the spacecraft flies through the corona’s blazing plasma, where temperatures can climb above 1.8 million degrees Fahrenheit (1 million degrees Celsius), the instruments onboard the probe are kept at a comfortable 85 degrees F (29.4 degrees C). This is due to the probe’s heat shield, which is 4.5 inches (11.4 centimeters) thick and can safely reach temperatures hotter than 2,500 degrees F (1,400 degrees C).

Giuliani hit with sanctions for failing to produce records in defamation case

reuters.com

Rudy Giuliani was sanctioned by a U.S. judge on Friday for failing to search for and turn over records in a defamation lawsuit brought by former Georgia election workers against him for accusing them of ballot fraud.

U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell ordered Giuliani, Donald Trump’s ex-lawyer, to pay attorney fees and costs associated with the plaintiffs’ effort to force Giuliani to search for documents, according to an order in Washington, D.C., federal court. The exact sum has not yet been determined.

A lawyer for Giuliani did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“We are pleased with the court’s Order, and look forward to our clients having their day in court,” Michael Gottlieb, a lawyer for the election workers, said in a statement.

The judge previously said Giuliani, who served as mayor of New York, must produce nearly all records requested by the election workers by June 30.

Howell found that Giuliani “arbitrarily limited” his search of a database that contained messages and documents in his possession prior to April 2021, when federal authorities seized his electronic devices, and conducted an “imprecise” manual search of messages from after April 2021.

That’s a weird place for it to stop. Did Toyota save money by only providing digits 0,1,2 on your odometer?

It turns out my Smart’s odometer has a seventh-position digit. It’s about to flip over 101,000 miles. If I can believe Mercedes-Benz, the odometer says I should be able to get to 9,999,999 before I need to replace my car. /s

Sidney Powell stuck with most sanctions for frivolous claims in Michigan election fraud case

alternet.org

Donald Trump’s ally and attorney Sidney Powell is among those who Friday largely lost their bid to overturn sanctions related to frivolous claims made in election fraud lawsuits challenging the 2020 results in Michigan.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit ruled that a lower court mostly got it right when it sanctioned Powell and other attorneys in connection with false claims made in an attempt to reverse the election in favor of Trump. The news comes a month after Powell and other attorneys were hit with a lawsuit by a Michigan attorney regulations agency alleging they committed professional misconduct.

The Sixth Circuit ruling explained how the attorneys refuted their own made-up positions:

“Three voters and three Republican nominees to the electoral college in Michigan brought this suit in a bid to overturn the results of the state’s 2020 presidential election. The complaint plausibly alleged that Republican election challengers had been harassed and mistreated during vote counting at the TCF Center in Detroit, in violation of Michigan law. But the complaint also alleged that an international ‘collaboration’—with origins in Venezuela, extending to China and Iran, and including state actors in Michigan itself—had succeeded in generating hundreds of thousands of fraudulent votes in Michigan, thereby swinging the state’s electoral votes to Joseph Biden. Many of those allegations—particularly the ones concerning Dominion voting machines—were refuted by the plaintiffs’ own exhibits to their complaint.”

In the early aughts, I went to the Iridium, where Les was propped up in the corner, and his masterpieces were being played by his support band. It was good to see him (for the first and last time), but kind of sad since that guy was the absolute wizard of his time.

Fingers crossed.

What I found interesting in Prigozhin’s statements yesterday about the reasons behind the Russo-Ukrainian War is that his thesis is that it was launched illegally and under false pretenses. According to him, it was launched in an attempt to bring a fella named Medvedchuk (don’t know if I got that correctly) to power in Kyiv, then the Russian elites would divvy up Ukraine for their own financial gain.

That largely mirrors American and Western statements.

LOL…did we pay Prigozhin to launch this attempted coup? After all, he is a mercenary.

Russia is the master of disinformation; I am skeptical that this could indeed be happening since we really don’t have any journalists that could verify any of these reports. The movement of the military in Moscow could be nothing but kabuki theater. It still seems a possibility that it’s a ploy to divert attention from some hostile action in Ukraine or perhaps some other Putin-supported maneuver to do housekeeping among his staff to eliminate those not sufficiently loyal.

The only reason I still own guns (Springfield pump-action 12-gauge, 3-shot maximum; Browning .22 semi-auto long rifle, and a .30/06 bolt action) is because I know how to use them and they’re not pistols or semi-auto rifles, it’s nice to have ‘em with all the societal uncertainties. IFL Science, today

Relics Of History’s First Known Goddess Emerge In Assyrian City Razed By ISIS

Amid the smashed ruins of an ancient town sacked by ISIS, archeologists have returned and yielded all kinds of ancient artifacts. Among the new relics discovered at the site are ones from a 3,000-year-old temple that was dedicated to Ishtar, the Mesopotamian goddess of love and war, who’s the goddess with the earliest written evidence.

The ancient city of Nimrud is located in present-day Iraq, around 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of the city of Mosul. Found along the Tigris River, the settlement grew into a thriving Assyrian city between approximately 1350 BC and 610 BCE, complete with grand palaces, beautiful artworks, and impressive temples.

In June 2014, ISIS captured Mosul and seeded its influence across the surrounding area. As part of their effort to rid the area of non-Islamic culture, ISIS set out to systematically destroy the archeological site of Nimrud, demolishing the ruins with sledgehammers, bombs, and diggers.

That reign of terror has, thankfully, ended and archeologists have recently been able to return to Nimrud.

Early this year, archaeologists from the Iraqi State Board of Antiquities and Heritage and the University of Pennsylvania continued work on the Temple of Ishtar, which burned when Nimrud was sacked by an invading army in 612 BCE.

Even given that “news” out of Russia should always be taken with a grain railroad hopper car full of salt, what seems to be going on in/around Rostov seems less of a “coup”, and more of a classic Mutiny (at the least) - where a major part of Russia’s military force in Ukraine seems to have finally decided “fuck this shit” (for which I’m sure there is a pithy phrase in Russian), and, in effect, walked off the job. Then again, Wagner ARE mercenaries - sorry, “private contractors” - so maybe labor-relations similes are appropriate…

Hail is coming down here now.

We’ve received more rain tonight than we usually get in the whole month.

Look at what your atheist prayers have wrought.

Apparently they work better than my governor putting out a proclamation during the 2012 drought asking everyone in the state to pray for rain.

re: #56 Dr Lizardo

Fingers crossed.

What I found interesting in Prigozhin’s statements yesterday about the reasons behind the Russo-Ukrainian War is that his thesis is that it was launched illegally and under false pretenses. According to him, it was launched in an attempt to bring a fella named Medvedchuk (don’t know if I got that correctly) to power in Kyiv, then the Russian elites would divvy up Ukraine for their own financial gain.

That largely mirrors American and Western statements.

LOL…did we pay Prigozhin to launch this attempted coup? After all, he is a mercenary.

I think it’s possible. We and the allies might also have offered to return conficated oligarch loot to HIM, rather than to THEM, since they could well have no further use for it if Priozhim actually gains power.

If you are curious about the various tweets with ballerinas appearing in threads with whatever it is that is happening in Russia… During the 1991 coup Swan Lake was broadcast on Russian TV so that the stations would not have to broadcast about the coup.

Also, US Government, Intelligence and Military sources are saying that they believe that whatever it is that is happening is Russia is real and serious. (Some have called it a “Pizza Watch”. Which means that the analysts and leadership are in the situation rooms 24/7 until further notice. And are therefore being fed on delivery food, such as pizza.)

Putting a bunch of confirmatory tweets because of length

re: #111 Dr Lizardo

Yes, the intermixing of the different organizations without much fighting is quite interesting. Apparently very few on the ‘government”? NonWagner? side seem particularly interested in dying for Putin. There is video of FSB border guards letting the Wagner columns into Russia without doing anything to stop them. In Rostov there are numerous videos of OMON, Rostgvardia and Military Police just staring at the Wagner forces. There has been only one video of shooting happening that was theoretically geolocated to just East of Rostov.

I am seeing questions about whether the various Russian defense, security, and intelligence organizations were just caught with their pants down. Or whether major elements are siding with Prigozin.

Good Night All!

And thought(s) for Saturday courtesy of Jill Thomas Doyle:

A grammar book walks into a bar

* An Oxford comma walks into a bar, where it spends the evening watching the television, getting drunk, and smoking cigars.

* A dangling participle walks into a bar. Enjoying a cocktail and chatting with the bartender, the evening passes pleasantly.

* A bar was walked into by the passive voice.

* An oxymoron walked into a bar, and the silence was deafening.

* Two quotation marks walk into a “bar.”

* A malapropism walks into a bar, looking for all intensive purposes like a wolf in cheap clothing, muttering epitaphs and casting dispersions on his magnificent other, who takes him for granite.

* Hyperbole totally rips into this insane bar and absolutely destroys everything.

* A question mark walks into a bar?

* A non sequitur walks into a bar. In a strong wind, even turkeys can fly.

* Papyrus and Comic Sans walk into a bar. The bartender says, “Get out — we don’t serve your type.”

* A mixed metaphor walks into a bar, seeing the handwriting on the wall but hoping to nip it in the bud.

* A comma splice walks into a bar, it has a drink and then leaves.

* Three intransitive verbs walk into a bar. They sit. They converse. They depart.

* A synonym strolls into a tavern.

* At the end of the day, a cliché walks into a bar — fresh as a daisy, cute as a button, and sharp as a tack.

* A run-on sentence walks into a bar it starts flirting. With a cute little sentence fragment.

* Falling slowly, softly falling, the chiasmus collapses to the bar floor.

* A figure of speech literally walks into a bar and ends up getting figuratively hammered.

* An allusion walks into a bar, despite the fact that alcohol is its Achilles heel.

* The subjunctive would have walked into a bar, had it only known.

* A misplaced modifier walks into a bar owned by a man with a glass eye named Ralph.

* The past, present, and future walked into a bar. It was tense.

* A dyslexic walks into a bra.

* A verb walks into a bar, sees a beautiful noun, and suggests they conjugate. The noun declines.

* A simile walks into a bar, as parched as a desert.

* A gerund and an infinitive walk into a bar, drinking to forget.

* A hyphenated word and a non-hyphenated word walk into a bar and the bartender nearly chokes on the irony

- Jill Thomas Doyle

Apparently, Putin has given the Russian security services the green light to go after Wagner. He called it “treason” repeatedly in his address to the Russian nation. Putin has declared Prigozhin an enemy of the state.

One of the interesting things is that Wagner apparently was very careful about preserving their high skilled mercenaries (mostly prior service from Russia’s military) while getting tens of thousands of untrained convicts killed. Which means that the Wagner mercenaries may be much more individually competent than most troops that the Ministry of Defense could deploy against them.

Wagner’s top leadership does contain a lot of criminals, though. Including Prigozhin.

This seems like a great opportunity for Ukraine with Russian leadership focused on the Wagner threat. We’ll see what happens.

You are very correct.

I did see an unconfirmed tweet that the Ukrainians have sped up their attack along the Orkhiv-Vasilyvka corridor. That is the one aimed at the Eastern/Southern bank of the Dnipro/Dnieper River. Presumably with an intermediate target of Enerhodar/Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant.

There are also other Ukrainian corridors of attack. Among them from Orkhiv to the South, presumably towards Melitopol. And from Velyka Novosilka South, presumably towards Mariupol.

Can’t rule out the possibility that there is no-one left willing to fight for Putin. It does remind one of 1917, when the army mutinied and the Tsar was toppled; ironically Putin himself drew that parallel in his speech.

At the least, it appears that a significant number of leaders are trying to hedge their bets at this point. Ukraine and the West are rooting for injuries: Ukraine will try to take maximum advantage of this of course as Christmas came early this year.

I don’t know what a best-case scenario looks like for the West. Probably a destroyed Wagner (they’re honest to God mob thugs), and severely weakened Russian military that forces them to withdraw from Ukraine and Syria.

That thought came to mind as I catching up with the thread, this is Caesar crossing the Rubicon, he and his men dubbed traitors and criminals as they fought for their homes. There’s no turning back now, no laying down of arms that will lead to Moscow forgiving them and allowing them to walk away. Either they succeed in their goals or they die in the fighting.

Yep, for Prigozhin and the Wagner Group, there’s no going back now. This is open rebellion.

172
Targetpractice  Jun 24, 2023 • 2:58:43am

The reality is that even if Prigozhin succeeds in capturing and/or executing Shoigu and Gerasimov and makes no move on the Kremlin itself, it will effectively mean the end of Putin’s regime. He will be seen as a leader in name only, serving at the sufferance of Wagner going forward. The knives will be out, the oligarchs who refused to move against him for fear of being targeted by those around him will now see him as vulnerable. IOW, he has to put Prigozhin down and has to do it hard.

With the SMD HQ out of action, the traditional Soviet-style system of all info traveling up the chain of command and all orders traveling down is in utter chaos with commanders having no fucking clue what to do and afraid of taking personal initiative for fear that once the whole mess with Wagner is sorted out they’ll be in deep shit for giving commands contrary to the wishes of Moscow.

No matter the outcome, one thing that this has done is drawn the West’s attention again. Russia and its “Ukraine must negotiate” talking heads were really pushing the narrative that the Ukrainian counter-offensive had stalled, if not outright failed. This totally overshadows basically anything since Kherson. I’d say maybe even more than the dam the Russians blew up.

Even if this blows over in a few more days, the narrative has now shifted to just how fragile Russia really is; it’s on the brink of becoming a failed state. This seems to have taken everyone by complete surprise, not just the Kremlin, but Western intelligence agencies as well. And I’d bet there’s some genuine nervousness in places like Beijing, Tehran, Damascus and Minsk right about now.

OK, I’m off to a sci-fi convention here in town, the first one since the end (so to speak) of the pandemic. Have fun, Lizards.

Recall of Marie Callender frozen shepherd’s pies manufactured in Arkansas underway. 2,700 pounds of shepherd’s pies are contaminated with flexible plastic.

Conagra Brands, Inc. is recalling over 2,000 pounds of frozen beef shepherd’s pie products.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, the frozen pies may contain clear, flexible plastic.

The products were produced on March 1 with time stamps ranging between 17:45 and 17:56 hours. The label of the recalled 4.31-pound products includes “MC Beef Shepherd’s Pie” with lot code 5006306020, a best by date of Feb. 24 2024 and a case code 2113100032. The FSIS says the items were shipped to retail customer distribution centers in several states before they were distributed nationwide.

No adverse reactions have been reported due to the consumption of these products.

That’s gotta suck (KETV, Omaha, June 22, 2023). Stand by for the “died suddenly” dipshytes to weigh in.

‘Widowed and married within a 10-minute span’: Groom dies one hour after ceremony, friends hope to support bride

An Omaha woman who just married the love of her life will now have to bury him.

He died an hour after they said their vows.

Monday was an important day for the Davis family: Juneteenth, but also Johnnie Mae’s grandmother’s birthday.

Friends said the couple was looking forward to the day after two recent losses in Johnnie Mae’s life, including her father.

No one could have imagined how their day would end.

“We were in the church and it was a beautiful ceremony,” said Jewel Roberson, Johnnie Mae’s friend.

“It was the happiest day of Toraze’s life. I could just see the smile on his face and how happy he was. And it’s just his energy. I just knew that he was just, it was a great day for him,” said Monica Miller, friend and ECO Supportive co-worker of Johnnie Mae.

After Monday’s ceremony, the couple popped outside to take photos.

Their celebration would turn to chaos.

“His heart stopped for the first time at 4:35, just an hour after the ceremony had begun,” Roberson said.

Johnnie Mae Davis would be a bride and a widow within an hour.

Daily Kos, yesterday:

COL Larry Wilkerson (RET) On What’s Starkly Absent in Media Coverage of Extremism in the Military

In the Media Matters piece below, while the author covers the specific issue of the Fox News-led attack that led to the disintegration of the Defense Department’s efforts to deal with extremism within the ranks of the U.S. Armed Forces, he completely omits any meaningful discussion of the central danger. That danger grows greater every day that passes. Christian Nationalism, and the often-accompanying phenomena of virulent white racism and utter disregard of the U.S. Constitution, is consuming the military chaplain corps and much of the rank and file and, stunningly enough, a considerable number of the generals and admirals. All “in the name of Jesus,” to cite their frequent mantra.

For many years now, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) has fought tenaciously against these developments. As an advisory board member of the MRFF, I’ve seen and experienced some of that battle — it’s deadly serious, just as are its opponents the Christian Nationalists, and it’s a battle that is clearly essential to protecting the very fabric of America as well as ensuring a competent and healthy military. That the author of the piece below missed even mentioning this grave danger is indicative of how even people who should realize what is happening do not. It’s high time the bulk of the American people did.

In contrast to the seemingly oblivious media, MRFF founder and president Mikey Weinstein, in his post-Jan. 6 op-ed “Forced Jesus Worship: Pentagon Ignores the Consequences of Ignoring Extremist Reality,” rightly described Christian nationalism as the “mothership” of white supremacy and other forms of extremism, as illustrated in this MRFF graphic:

Not surprising Russian Aviation is loyal to the government, they haven’t really been used as cannon fodder in this war to the degree that the Russian Army has. Hence why the former is trying to defend the regime while the latter is reportedly either standing to the side as Wagner advances or even joining their ranks.

Polls are open today in Sierra Leone, in what is widely expected to be tense.

Sierra Leone typically has much greater turnout percentages for elections than the United States.

The West African country, which never fully recovered economically from a 1991-2002 civil war and the Ebola epidemic a decade later, was further pummelled by the Covid pandemic and fallout from the war in Ukraine.

Twelve men and one woman are in the running for the top job, but incumbent President Julius Maada Bio’s main challenger is Samura Kamara of the All People’s Congress (APC) party.

The two will face off for the second time in a row after Bio, of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), narrowly beat Kamara in a runoff in 2018.

Rising food prices are a key issue for many voters in the import-dependent West African nation of eight million people.

Year-on-year inflation hit 43 percent in April, according to the latest official figures.

That’s not how this works, moran.

Domestic terrorist James Charles Kopp has filed court papers asking that his federal convictions be overturned on the grounds of the United States Supreme Court determining in the 2022 Dobbs decision that Americans have no constitutional right to abortion — which he seems to believe gave him the right to kill an abortion provider.

In 1998, Kopp, a member of a radical anti-abortion group called the Lambs of Christ (or, alternately, Victim Souls of the Unborn Christ-Child), shot and killed Dr. Barnett Slepian in a sniper attack in his home near Buffalo, New York. Kopp was convicted in 1993 on state charges of second degree murder and on federal charges of discharging a firearm during a crime of violence and of violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act (FACE) resulting in death.

“FACE was intended to protect a ‘right’ to abortion that thus never existed, and, as such, the fate of FACE attaches to and follows perfectly the fate of Roe,” Kopp wrote in the court papers, as per the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. “Since Roe is now overturned FACE also is now gone and never existed.”

The FACE Act, signed into law by Bill Clinton in 1994 following several years’ worth of anti-abortion terrorism on US clinics, makes it illegal when anyone:

(1) by force or threat of force or by physical obstruction, intentionally injures, intimidates or interferes with or attempts to injure, intimidate or interfere with any person because that person is or has been, or in order to intimidate such person or any other person or any class of persons from, obtaining or providing reproductive health services;

(2) by force or threat of force or by physical obstruction, intentionally injures, intimidates or interferes with or attempts to injure, intimidate or interfere with any person lawfully exercising or seeking to exercise the First Amendment right of religious freedom at a place of religious worship; or

(3) intentionally damages or destroys the property of a facility, or attempts to do so, because such facility provides reproductive health services, or intentionally damages or destroys the property of a place of religious worship.

Dobbs has had no impact on the legality of FACE, and it is hard to see how it would.

‘I am going to stay out of it’: Michigan GOP lawmakers keeping their distance from Trump campaign stop

rawstory.com

When Donald Trump makes a campaign stop in Michigan on Sunday he is not expected to be surrounded by Republican lawmakers from the state who are keeping their distance from the twice-indicted former president.

According to the Detroit News, the former president is making a major campaign stop where he will speak at the Oakland County Republican Party’s Lincoln Day Dinner and the report states that there is a definite lack of enthusiasm for the Republican frontrunner for the 2024 presidential nomination.

The report notes, “Only a handful of the 72 Republicans who serve in the Michigan Legislature had publicly endorsed Trump’s bid for another term as president by Thursday, a trend that highlights concerns among some GOP leaders in a state that once helped propel him to the White House.”

I mean, what even is that? I’m sorry, but killing is wrong. EVEN IF you believe abortion is murder, it is still not my - or any individual Christian’s - place to pass judgment, or to execute a perceived offender. That right rests with the courts, in this life, and with God alone, in the next. I don’t know where or when this entitlement mentality of Christians came in, where they believe that they have the right and duty to individually enforce their moral code upon other people, but it needs to fucking stop.

One-Third of Republicans Disapprove of Roe v. Wade Being Overturned (The New Civil Rights Movement, June 23, 2023)

Even though the fight to overturn Roe v. Wade, the case that granted the right to an abortion in the United States, was one of the biggest causes of the GOP, a new poll shows that one-third of Republican voters think that was a bad idea.

The poll was commissioned by NBC News for Friday’s anniversary of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. Overall, 61% of voters are against the Supreme Court decision, while 36% approve. This is up from August of 2022, only two months after Roe v. Wade was overturned, where 58% of people disapproved, and 38% approved.

While 92% of Democrats disapprove of Roe being overturned, 31% of Republican voters disapprove. Independents disapprove of the ruling by 60%. Women voters also highly disapproved, at a rate of 67%—though that goes 10 points higher when limited to women aged 18-49. The only groups who approve of the decision were Republican voters at 65%, and rural voters at 53%.

Most people reserve the right to defence of another. If you believe your god says a blastocyst or foetus is a person, and the physician or nurse is murdering babies, then you can use your religious faith to justify killing one to save thousands.

It is why so many anti-abortionists consider abortion to be genocide, and often compare it to the Holocaust.

Heh. Well, all I can say is if that’s the case, then Biden is, it would seem, a Sith Lord powerful enough to rival Palpatine.

Hell, it’s no longer Dark Brandon - it’s Darth Brandon.

So in other words, according to the vast worldwide right wing conspiracy, Biden is a doddering old man who spends 23 1/2 hours a day asleep when he isn’t drooling all over himself. He also at the exact same time organizes a revolution inside the world’s largest country by geography, exercises compete control over the DOJ to attack political foes, controls a vast international criminal empire and has time to take away your light bulbs and gas stoves.

Last Thursday, June 15, famous and infamous podcaster Joe Rogan interviewed presidential candidate and famous anti-vaxxer Robert Kennedy Jr. for three hours. During the interview RFK Jr. repeated his accusations that Covid vaccines are unnecessary and actually cause harm to children and vaccines are linked to autism - both assertions that have been proved incorrect.

RFK Jr. has long promoted conspiracy theories that the CIA murdered his uncle President John Kennedy and his father Robert Kennedy; vaccines contain dangerous levels of mercury; that Wi-Fi radiation could be causing autism, food allergies, asthma, eczema, and other illnesses; and that the government suppressed proof that ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine were effective in treating Covid.

WASHINGTON —

Iranian American activists who staged a rare sit-in outside the State Department to oppose potential U.S. monetary incentives to Iran to slow the progress of the Iranian nuclear program say they are optimistic about a dialogue they started with the Biden administration.

In a statement sent to VOA on Friday, the nonpartisan and nonprofit National Solidarity Group for Iran (NSGIRAN) said it is “optimistic that the State Department has opened a channel of communication with us, and hopeful that hearing the concerns and perspectives of Iranians inside and outside Iran will help the U.S. craft policies toward the Islamic regime that take those concerns and perspectives seriously and consequentially into account.”

NSGIRAN said its organizer, Siamak Aram, and another member of the group attended a Thursday meeting at the State Department with an official of the department’s Iran desk, whom the group declined to identify. It was the second meeting that NSGIRAN said it had with the U.S. official since it began a sit-in outside a State Department entrance on June 3. It said the first meeting took place at the State Department on June 5.

The activists ended the 14-day sit-in on June 16, a day after a State Department spokesperson publicly acknowledged the protest for the first time and confirmed the group’s first meeting with the U.S. official.

UK village marks struggle against US Army racism in World War II (Stars & Stripes, today)

BAMBER BRIDGE, England — The village of Bamber Bridge in northwestern England is proud of the blow it struck against racism in the U.S. military during World War II.

When an all-Black truck regiment was stationed in the village, residents refused to accept the segregation ingrained in the U.S. Army. Ignoring pressure from British and American authorities, pubs welcomed the GIs, local women chatted and danced with them, and English soldiers drank alongside men they saw as allies in the war against fascism.

But simmering tensions between Black soldiers and white military police exploded on June 24, 1943, when a dispute outside a pub escalated into a night of gunfire and rebellion that left Private William Crossland dead and dozens of soldiers from the truck regiment facing court martial. When Crossland’s niece learned about the circumstances of her uncle’s death from an Associated Press reporter, she called for a new investigation to uncover exactly how he died.

The community has chosen to focus on its stand against segregation as it commemorates the 80th anniversary of what’s now known as the Battle of Bamber Bridge and America reassesses its past treatment of Black men and women in the armed forces.

“I think maybe it’s a sense of pride that there was no bigotry towards (the soldiers),” said Valerie Fell, who was just 2 in 1943 but whose family ran Ye Olde Hob Inn, the 400-year-old thatched-roof pub where the conflict started. “They deserved the respect of the uniform that they were wearing. … That’s how people felt about it.”

That’s the thing about revolutions, they always start small and then grow as the revolutionaries give the common folk an outlet for anger and resentment they’ve been gathering against the government. KLKN-TV, Lincoln, Nebr., June 21, 2023

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) - This week’s ruling on a transgender care ban for minors could have far-reaching consequences.

A federal judge struck down Arkansas’ law aimed at preventing doctors from providing gender-affirming hormone treatment or surgery to anyone under 18.

The state’s attorney general is planning to appeal to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which also covers Nebraska.

That could put a similar ban here, where the ACLU has filed a lawsuit, in jeopardy.

Just last month, Gov. Jim Pillen signed Legislative Bill 574.

It includes regulation of puberty blockers and a ban on gender-affirming surgeries for minors.

Both are currently set to go into effect on Oct. 1.

The 1917 Bolshevik Revolution was carried out with about 30,000 men. The Tsar’s army largely deserted.

If only both sides could lose. Putin and Prigozhin are monsters who offer death and destruction to anyone who doesn’t submit.

That’s the thing about revolutions, they always start small and then grow as the revolutionaries give the common folk an outlet for anger and resentment they’ve been gathering against the government. If the reports of Russian Army soldiers along the way either standing aside or joining the march are to be believed, then things could go very pear-shaped for the regime in Moscow.

In any case, be mindful that as of now Russian Army regulars are now consisting of outright criminals drawn from the worst prisons in Russia. Not exactly the type of people regular Russians want to back.

All this craziness going on in Russia (and I gotta admit, I didn’t have that one on my bingo card) reminds me of that saying attributed to Lenin: “There are decades where nothing happens; and then there are weeks where decades happen.”

Foreign reporters tend to do better interviews in the USA since their media doesn’t think it has to be brain dead and pathetic journalists for the sake of the mythical “access”.

(The journalists should consider their actual power. Which falls first, the media company or the politician, if a media company decides that a politician “will not be mentioned” on their broadcasts. And more so if they collectively opt to do it.)

During the American Civil War the reporters with the Army of the Potomac got upset with Gen. Meade and collectively decided they would thereafter not mention him in their dispatches. Or negatively if they needed to do so. (They were upset about Meade throwing some reporters out because the spilled military information to the papers.) The military-press relationship has always been a tricky thing.

Czech television reporting that Lukashenko might have fled Belarus to Turkey on his private plane. Again, that’s not confirmed, but it allegedly happened earlier today, not long after Wagner took Rostov.

If that’s true - and that’s a big “if” - then maybe he figured it’s game over. So far, however, I haven’t seen any kind of confirmation of this, just what’s being reported on Czech TV.

Yeah, the war is effectively over. Putin hasn’t declared it so, but pulling troops from the front lines back home means the guys left behind have been left to die. They’ve no real hope of resupply or reinforcement in the near future, the chain of command is totally fucked, and Ukraine is not going to sit back and let them catch a breather while Moscow tries to unfuck the situation. Right about now might be a good time for any whose loyalties are wavering to reconsider Ukraine’s offers to surrender.

One thing, though: personally, I DO have confidence that the Biden Administration (utterly unlike its predecessor) has the ability to manage affairs for the most positive outcome: both for the US, Ukraine, NATO/EU, the world, etc.

So get ready for an even worse (if possible) avalanche/tsunami of bullshit from the GOP….

re: #296 Hecuba’s daughter

Those claiming Biden responsibility for the Wagner invasion are right. If Trump had been re-elected, he would have pulled us out of NATO and turned Ukraine over to Putin. It is Biden who led the West in arming Ukraine and thereby revealing that Russia’s vaunted military was in reality a Potemkin army.

Wagner forces are too small to achieve victory — either they will likely be crushed within a day or so or Putin will remove those officials that Prigozhin is targeting and Wagner will return to the fold.

really? wagner forces are too small? The entire Russian army is currently sitting in Ukraine. They are literally having to pull wwii level tanks out to kamikaze Ukrainian positions because they don’t have the materiel left to fight like a first-world army. My guess would be that Moscow is like Washington during that period of the Civil War when the confederates could virtually have walked into Washington if there intelligence had been better and they’d realized the capital was completely exposed.

I wasn’t, at least not entirely. Even as an evil bastard, Prigozhin does have a point that the MOD has been engaged in a continued campaign of using his men as expendable cannon fodder. They sent them into the meat grinder that was Bakhmut and supported them for months, but just as they got close to taking the city suddenly their supply shipments were cut to 1/10th of what they needed and they were banned from recruiting prison convicts which was one of their primary means of recouping their losses. When they started talking about leaving the city last month, the MOD responded by threatening to slap any who left with treason charges. And then came the announcement last week that the MOD was ordering all merc companies to sign over leadership to them, which Prigozhin predictably responded to by telling them where they could stick the paperwork.

tl;dr: Things have gradually been coming to a head for months, so it’s not a surprise that this happened, it’s more a surprise that it didn’t happen sooner.

Yep, the gravy train has left the station but that is really the lesser of the GQP’s two big worries. It seems likely that blackmail and information transfer (dirt on enemies etc.) are bigger factors in Russian influence. It’s hard to believe, for example, that you could buy off a filthy rich hereditary oligarch like Tucker Carlson with piles of cash. It would take more than Putin is willing to pay and larger amounts are exponentially harder to conceal.
We might actually have gotten a glimpse of how this works when faithful Putin stooge Madison Cawthorn decided to jump ship and start blabbing about repug coke orgies. In no time at all, the infamous “cousin video” surfaced and Maddy was toast in his rabidly homophobic district.

in fairness to depardieu, I’m guessing French taxes on his level of wealth are pretty crushing.

Russia was trying to position itself as the Switzerland of the East, a tax haven for Western millionaires. Depardieu was their biggest poster child.

Even if Putin doesn’t completely lose power he is weakened considerably for the foreseeable future. The odds of leaks implicating him and Chumpy that could make both look bad are greatly increasing at this moment.

It’ll have come at the cost of killing/destroying/pissing off his best asset, Wagner, in Ukraine.

re: #382 Targetpractice

I’m guessing a lot of the early Prigozhyn bitching about not getting enough ammo was performative dinner theater designed to hide any suspicions about the fact that ammo was getting to him but wasn’t being used in large enough numbers. Someone would have noticed. Hence, create video in which you bitch about how corruption elsewhere is preventing ammo from getting to your boys. Meanwhile that ammo is actually getting stockpiled somewhere amongst the “real” Wagner troops against the day when the march on Moscow begins.

That’s the current line of speculation from Czech military analysts. They now think that when Prigozhin was bitching about lack of ammo several weeks back, he was actually hoarding it for this very occasion.

What is going to be truly telling is how Wagner is met in Moscow in the coming hours. If they fail to take the city and end up being put down hard, then the damage done to Putin’s regime will be harsh but he may weather it. But if they pull into the city and are met with little to no resistance, then Putin’s regime is over and all he’s doing by hiding in his bunker is delaying the inevitable.

I’m guessing a lot of the early Prigozhyn bitching about not getting enough ammo was performative dinner theater.

The econo-military Youtuber Perun (highly, HIGHLY recommended to Ukraine war wonks who aren’t that interested in the pew-pew shooty stuff) explained that Wagner was getting priority in Russian front-line logistics during the battle for Bakhmut while other Russian forces were being starved. Eventually the Russians dialled back the amount of supplies, especially artillery ammo being gifted to the Wagner fighters to bolster their own lines and Prighozin went public on this on Telegram, publishing the actual receipts (10% of the numbers of shells delivered per week, number of weekly Khinzal strikes allocated to the Wagner Group tacticians etc.)

You’d think Langley might buy their own pizza oven, keep supplies on hand and maybe some junior analyst comes from a pizza family and can run it. Op-sec, y’know, don’t want to see too many deliveries when sometimes the crisis isn’t on all the cable new channels.

Yeah, these headquarters have pretty significant catering facilities and the Pentagon has a full up mall food court as well. So the “Pentagon pizza effect” is not a real thing. However, adversaries can kind of monitor who goes in and out, if you keep your eyes on enough parking lots and tunnels and metro stops. I’m pretty sure that a whole lot of military personnel called off their Sunday BBQs as soon as the shit went down yesterday.

Right about now might be a good time for any whose loyalties are wavering to reconsider Ukraine’s offers to surrender.

surrender, hell. Just let the officers know, “If you guys were all to take the M6 highway from Central to Pumpkintown, at 0800 tomorrow, and were to do it with your tank turrets reversed so that our drones could know you are non-belligerent, we would grant you free passage back to Russia so that you can fight for your own homeland, if that is your wish.”
