Big fire on a car transporter ship in the North Sea, one person dead, with the ship being left to burn with no onboard firefighting efforts. The Dutch coastguard is reportedly saying is was caused by an EV car’s battery pack catching fire.

There’s mention of another transporter, the Felicity Ace, that caught fire last year off the Azores with the same reason given, lithium-ion battery fire. That ship sank under tow after the fire had burned out with the loss of 4000 luxury cars.

From what I’m reading (so far), it looks like the Trump appointee deliberately junked plea deal because she didn’t like that signing off on it might mean Hunter having immunity from any potential future charges. IOW, the DOJ is now going to be forced to go to trial on charges they normally wouldn’t even bother with because the judge doesn’t approve of Hunter avoiding jail time.

The GOP Bullshit Machine will spin that McConnell’s incident proves Joe is too old to be President…

20
lawhawk  Jul 26, 2023 • 11:22:29am

Since he fell and was hospitalized, McConnell hasn’t quite been right. This is just more proof that he’s no longer fit for office (same as Feinstein for that matter). If you’re arguing Biden is too old, then you need to make the same argument for the following:

DiFi - 90
McConnell - 81
Trump - 77

For comparison: Biden - 80

Trump regularly shows disorganized speaking, writing, and spews word salad daily (and has done this for years on end). McConnell has been showing signs of issues since he fell and was hospitalized. DiFi was hospitalized and sickened with shingles for months and has shown an inability to do her daily job.

Her term is over next year; unfortunately she cannot be replaced because the GOP will prevent any new Democrat this term from being seated on the Judiciary Committee. If we had a functional Senate, she probably would have departed when she became ill but the Senate and indeed any organization that has Republicans with power is designed to harm the American public. As bad as McConnell is, his replacement is likely to be far worse. The modern GOP needs to go the way of the Whigs, but that’s not likely to happen anytime soon.

To repeat my CL’ed posting from downstairs:

Let’s never forget it was the ill-advised initial statements from the Air Force that led everyone to believe that an alien craft was recovered from Roswell. If they hadn’t said that the remnants were of a “flying disc”, there would be no craze associated with the area. By the time of the retraction, it was too late. So the government has no one to blame but itself for the continued belief of alien visitors from outside our planet.

Heh. Independence Day was a pretty good “alien invasion” genre film - and one of the last super-‘splodey blockbusters that used a good deal of practical VFX, for instance, scenes of landmark buildings getting blown up. Those were elaborate miniatures, such as the White House. Using physical, three-dimensional models and some brilliant pyrotechnics gave the scenes better heft than just using CGI.

The ocasio-cortez .house .gov is a verified house .gov account - it’s the only way to get a handle like that.

Beau had a very good video on why the military started encouraging reporting of UFOs. Which I can’t find right now.

He points out that it’s basically because ufos are quite unlikely to be “space aliens”. And more likely to be an unexpected use of technology. Reporting these incidents might help in uncovering that use. It could also be a way to identify a slip up in US operational security.

There is a famous story about WW2. During the war years the US was developing in secret jet airplanes. The test area was also being used for training by the Army Air Force. The question was how to keep operational security of the jet program.

A very effective method was used.

First, as a standard part of training, separate from operational security, pilots who were considered to have mental problems were generally washed out. They were not considered fully capable of handling a large and lethal piece of dangerous machinery.

Second, the concept of a plane flying without a propeller was not common knowledge. Particularly one that seemed more capable than propeller driven airplanes.

Third, at least one test pilot was known to wear a guerilla mask and a bowler, and smoke a cigar, while testing the jets.

If you were a pilot flying a standard prop driven plane.

And while you were flying,
- a propeller-less plane zoomed up alongside you, at a speed faster than your plane was capable of
- the pilot of this airplane, who was a guerilla, nodded at you, tipped his hat, and then zoomed off at impossible speeds…

Are you going to report this? And get thought of as crazy?

Tuberville’s tales about his father in World War II have false elements

I can kind of understand how things get embellished in family lore but how nobody in the press or in private knew enough to question the details till now. “FIVE Bronze Stars? Maybe you mean bronze service stars (which denote that a soldier was physically present during a particular military campaign or engagement)?” Hopefully Tuberville acknowledges that the family lore might have been embellished and he apologizes and no longer uses his father’s story as validition for himself.

Also, my dad was a WWII vet and my uncle, his brother, was a serious hero (D-Day, H-Hour, among other things). I would never think of trying to leverage their service for my gain. Except, here, in the pursuit of updings.

Uncle was still pulling little bits of shrapnel out of his legs in his 80’s (apparently, they left some in when they were fixing him up in England because it was riskier to take them out and as he got older and frailer they started working their way up to the skin).

9 kids in a Honda Civic, two of them in the trunk.

State Police said Wednesday that they arrested a 16-year-old for speeding with nine juvenile passengers in the vehicle, four of whom were under the age of 16. The driver has been charged with four counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law, a felony that is charged when a driver commits a DWI with passengers under the age of 16.

On July 23, troopers from the New Lebanon barracks observed a 2019 Honda Civic traveling over 100 mph in a 45 mph zone on state Route 20 in the town of New Lebanon. An investigation during the traffic stop determined that the driver was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage, State Police said in a release.

Troopers also found nine passengers in the vehicle, including two in the trunk. Four of the passengers were 15 or younger, which led police to charge the driver with four counts under Leandra’s Law.

My late husband and I attended the film with friends and we were all very disappointed. The director should never be forgiven for having the aliens use C as the programming language to operate their craft and manage the invasion.

If you really understand computer architecture at the basic level, you can write C code that’s elegant and efficient.

If you don’t have that level of understanding, C provides endless ways of shooting yourself in the foot.

Don’t ask me how I know.

And here. we. go….

The main thrust of Ukraine’s nearly two-month-old counteroffensive is now underway in the country’s southeast, two Pentagon officials said on Wednesday, with thousands of reinforcements pouring into the grinding battle, many of them trained and equipped by the West and, until now, held in reserve.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss details of the campaign. Their comments dovetailed with reports from the battlefield on Wednesday, where artillery battles flared along the southern front line in the Zaporizhzhia region.

And Igor Konashenkov, the Russian Defense Ministry’s chief spokesman, reported a “massive” assault and fierce battles south of Orikhiv, a town that Ukraine holds about 60 miles north of the Sea of Azov. Vladimir Rogov, an official appointed by Moscow in southern Ukraine, said the assault involved Ukrainian troops who had been trained abroad and were equipped with about 100 armored vehicles, including German-made Leopards and American-made Bradley Fighting Vehicles.

Yep - just a different type of virus this time. It’s definitely a B-movie, albeit, a very well-made one. The plot is thin and so is the character development, but as a bombastic popcorn flick, it delivers.

How is the plot any worse than Raiders of the Lost Ark. B, at least to me, normally refers to the quality of the movie, not whether every detail is believable.

As for the hacking, I always just assumed that they had been poking around the ships OS for decades, and were able to figure out some of the controls and other interfaces: it just took David to put it all together. Kind of like how you can use a probe to figure out controls on a controller. But, yes, I tend to not take that too far.

My favorite scene is a transition scene, specifically the music in the scene. After they come up with a plan and set up telegraphs to transmit, it cuts to the Middle East. The music starts with Morse code and then blends it into the music.

re: #47 No Malarkey!

I recall there was a view that the Air Force deliberately stoked UFO rumors as disinformation to cover for the real experimental aircraft they were testing.

That is certainly the origin of “Area 51” mythology that has accreted around the Groom Lake Test Facility. In 1955, Lockheed was using the remote base to flight test the first U-2s. With its huge sailplane-like wings, the new aircraft presented a strikingly strange appearance for the time. Lockheed and the Air Force (acting on behalf of the CIA) quickly realized that it would be recognized as something new and very unusual. One way or another, production or operation, actual millions of people had worked with aircraft during World War II and public awareness was much higher than it is now. The Air Force got around it by planting flying saucer stories in Las Vegas media. People who knew about aircraft noticed, and reported, the new plane, but those reports were buried in an avalanche of bullshit. In the 1980s, the Area 51 myth, bordering on hysteria at the time, helped to conceal the early Stealth aircraft and “donated” Soviet bloc aircraft that were being tested at Groom Lake and nearby.
It was classic disinformation, though probably more trouble that it was worth.

True enough. And Raiders of the Lost Ark is not only one of the greatest action/adventure films ever made, but also one of those films that goes from zero to 100 real quick.

Sure, there’s little hints here and there that something supernatural is going on with the Ark - nothing too much, mind you. That ominous humming, the swastika getting burned off the crate…and the next thing you know, there’s ghostly maidens, a pillar of fire, a platoon of Nazis getting blasted left, right and center, faces melting off and heads exploding. It works so well because that whole supernatural element is just all up in your face, quite unapologetically.

All in the last 10 minutes or so of the film.

Within a few months, it goes from “Big, lively community where everybody’s treating it like a huge slumber party and clear-cutting the forest when they’re not engaged in dynamite fishing” to “South African refugee camp where people are shooting each other” to finally “Outright cannibalism.”

re: #64 dat_said

Went down the search hole again after posting this about my father and uncle and learned (and relearned) a few things.

My uncle was in 16th Infantry, Company I of the 29th Division. From achh.army.mil:

Company K was forced to take over the mission of Company I as the Navy had taken Company I off course and had nearly landed them in the vicinity of PORT EN BESSIN. The 3rd BLT was disorganized after reaching the beach due to losses of key officers and enlisted men from the withering artillery, mortar, and MG fire. The battalion was forced to fight in a piecemeal action during the morning and it was not until late afternoon that the battalion was able to be organized as such in the vicinity of LE GD [Grand] HAMEAU.

That corroborates some of what my uncle told me about not landing where there were supposed to land and that there wasn’t much of a beach there (looking at satellite photos of the region). He also commented on how disorganized (not his actual words) things were when he landed. The way I remember what he told me was that after being pinned down for a while, a small group got together and climbed the cliff to take out whoever was firing on them from on top. He got slightly injured during that and stayed put until a medic was able to get to him during the night. He was back fighting the next day. The only thing I can’t figure out is that he said some of the group were Canadians but the Canadians landed quite a ways a way. I suppose it could have been British as Gold Beach was in that direction.

By the way, the 116th traces from the 1st Virginia Regt raised in November 1741. During the Civil War it fought as part of the Stonewall Brigade. Some articles have characterized it as the 7th oldest continuously serving regiment in the US Army.

Headline’s short two words, it’s “How Much Will Democrats Surrender Trans Rights?” Because we can expect the usual dying by inches approach where Dems gradually sign away trans rights on the promise that they’ll reverse the trend when they get power back…only to then argue that the limited time they have in power must be spent on “more important things.”

Or they could just dismiss the charges. Which will feed the wingnut whirlwind for a couple of weeks… considering they probably only went forward with charges because he is the president’s son, it would be a logical conclusion to this mess.

Yes. One of the many great things you learn from the graphic novel Maus (now on several ban lists for schools) is how arbitrary things could be, but that pre-existing skills (not skills learned in camps usually) could at least buy you time; but the main message is that time was running out, and that many who survived were traumatized for life in ways that you wouldn’t wish on anyone, and that trauma could be passed like DNA to some in the next generation.

When’s the last time the government shut down? Seriously, for the last 20+ years, Republicans have had no agency. Any time anything bad happens, it’s Democrats’ fault for not working with the Republicans enough, no matter who’s actually in power.

I don’t know that this has much chance of passing, considering even Republicans helped pass the law that codified gay marriage.

Yeah, umm, I hate to say it, but a lot’s changed since then. I know you know this, but Republicans are hyper-polarized and are determined to “win the culture war” at any cost, because that’s the only way they stay in power. The majority of the House Republicans WILL vote for this.

Today in the American gerontocracy

Nancy Pelosi, 83, gracefully cedes power to the next generation and seps down.

Mitch McConnell, 81, will do no such thing. He fell and had a concussion 4 months ago. NOw he looks to have had some neurological problem.

Who will take over? It could be a blood bath.Well, a bloodbath in the Senate is not like the House. Comyn and Thune will arm wrestle. Barrasso may want say he has dibs on the winner.

But whateverr happens we are really begining to see party leadership shift to a new generation.

Hottest Water On Earth!

An ocean buoy off the coast of Florida has registered a water temperature of 101.1F (38.4C) which would be the warmest ocean temperature ever recorded.

It’s Hot Tub Hot!

The resulting damage to the marine ecosystem, the coral, the ocean currents, etc. is unknown - this is a frightening new reality!

And water at that temperature can’t hold sufficient oxygen, so pretty much the only things left living in those waters are bacteria & viruses.

McConnell is an evil son of a bitch, but he’s a smart evil son of a bitch. The damage he has done is incalculable, largely on account of it flying under the radar. The flashy, showy assholes like DeathSentence who flaunt their evil in front of everybody - they don’t last long. Nobody wants to vote for somebody who is blatantly evil. They vote for the guys who say all the right things, walk the right tightropes, and get their dirty work done behind closed doors.

The problem for Ron is that everybody pumped him for a run this year under the assumption that Trump wasn’t running, that either he’d be nearing the end of his second term or he’d have given up and gone back to burning other people’s cash in NYC. He never planned for the possibility that he’d be running as Trump-Lite when Trump Classic was his opponent.

It’s not up to them, but what is up to them is that when it comes to light that they have been lied to by lawyers in a case, those lawyers are held to account for misrepresenting the facts.

Republicans don’t want any of that: they want no family leave, no abortion rights, no gun control, no health care, no rights for the LGBTQ community, no food for the hungry, no shelter for the homeless, no truth about American history, no voting rights for minorities. Nate Hochman and Stephen Miller are the role models for the modern Republican Party.

I have two diametrically opposed memories of M/STP. My brother had failed out of college at a young age, but then went to a Community College to build his grades up and take some Dramatic Arts classes. He parlayed that into acceptance at Macalester College. He lived in a big old drafty house with something like 6 other students. He invited me for a promised “great New Years” and I arrived on 12/31 in the middle of a deep freeze. No one was home. My brother had finished his shift at a St. Paul restaurant and called me to “take a cab down here, it’s great.” No cabs immediately available in NYE, who would’ve thought?). It was cold as shit. Teeth-shattering resentment. (Later, I can tell you about a repeat of his bad judgement in inviting me to visit him in Hamburg.) The next day I learned about the Minnesota hospitality when by brother’s old car needed a jump and a few strangers came to help right away.

A few years later I was on my way to St. Cloud—it was the staging place for a trip to the PNW with a few friends (one of whom had family in St. Cloud). It was summer. I stopped in Minneapolis because an old friend who graduated from St. Johns was working at Northern Lights while making a go in a rock band. He lived in an old drafty house with 5 or 6 other guys. We just had an amazing time as they made a kettle of chili and some drove to Wisconsin for beer on a Sunday.

I enjoyed the cities both times, tbh.
