PBS Space Time: What if Space Is NOT Empty? What if It’s Full of FOAM?

Science • Views: 16,652

Spacetime on its smallest scales is a seething ocean of black holes and wormholes flickering into and out of existence — or so many physicists think has to be the case. But why should we take this spacetime foam seriously if we’ve never seen any evidence of it?

If he’s blaming his bigotry on his religion, a sincere apology will be impossible without leaving the bigoted sect and experiencing a lot of growth.

The Ghost of a Flea  Aug 24, 2023 • 2:52:42pm

re: #164 Nerdy Fish

Not just OSHA, though. The end goal of the conservative movement is to abolish the entire administrative state. Anything that places restrictions on the mythical free market must go. Business owners have an absolute right to run their businesses however they see fit, without any interference from Big Government.

Okay, this is where I’ll get slightly tinfoil-hat and say…do not trust that this will happen, even when it seems like this is what they aspire to because of their Confederate posturing.

They want to abolish the administrative state only to the extent it impedes the function of property-holders to act as feudal lords, but in their fantasies they and their patrons are effective leaders and organizers such that they won’t need administrative power, because everything will devolve to smaller zones of administration…not just to the states, but ultimately to regional oligarchs. But they’re actually awful at governance and have that brain rot where they think they won’t get pushback when they steal shit.

Thing is…this was tried in the South prior to and during the Civil War, and what rapidly becomes clear is that this doesn’t work, and to be this kind of oligarch you actually have to have a robust state that has all the administrative bells and whistles…

…so the actual innovation is to re-focus all that power so it incorporates the base assumption that there two distinct applications: a prerogative state that covers the needs of the oligarchs and facilitates their needs as a special interest class, and a normative state that keeps everyone else in line.

And this idea isn’t really new in US politics: it’s part of foreign policy that in spite of a “dedication to democracy” we de facto prefer to work with, and heavily back, militarized dictatorships that possess enormous administrative power, because the level of dynamism (arbitrary rule changes) required to do pillaging and purging is easier to achieve without consensus. Most of what Republicans want is the implementation of colonialist inequalities of franchise and labor to US citizens, combined with a more explicitly foreign policy of colonialism*

Republicans can and will remake the administrative state so that it’s function is to calcify the arbitrary power of their patrons; they’re not going to discard power they can subvert, they don’t actually have those principles, and their models of how power works will fail without massive administrative effort just to keep the wheels on.

* our current system is neocolonial—developing countries are Esau, offered the potage of loans and aid in return for signing away their far-more-valuable commodities and labor, with propped-up local politicians acting as middlemen (see the history of Nigerian oil politics). But this system, which uses instruments like the UN and the WEF to apply coercion through multilateral institutions and produced good outcomes for developed-world capital holders, is despised by conservatives. When they talk about leaving or defunding the UN, or ceasing to support aid institutions, their own vision of foreign policy means that they must substitute a direct, unilateral means of coercing trade partners. The want colonies, they want direct spoils that go immediately to their patrons as part of the nationalist-socialist exercise of power.

They’re never going to make the state smaller.

THIS is the framing more people need to see. Democrats were not trying to steal peoples’ votes. Republicans trying to materially alter the results of the election were. In trying to change reality, they were denying the people who lawfully voted for Biden their right to vote. Trump and his cronies blatantly trying to steal the election is new, and it will become GOP SOP unless serious steps are taken.

BeenHereAwhile  Aug 24, 2023 • 4:48:51pm

For a decade, the last recordings of Mark Linkous, the psychedelic pop auteur behind Sparklehorse seemed lost or simply unusable. His family found and finished them.

.  .  .  For two years, Matt and his bandmate and wife, Melissa Moore Linkous, led a small team of Linkous’s closest collaborators through an arduous process of analyses, edits and additions to those tapes. In 2003, when Melissa was pregnant with their son, Spencer, she and Matt had served as Sparklehorse’s backing band during an arena tour with R.E.M. Now they asked themselves an impossible question: How would one of this century’s most idiosyncratic pop auteurs have perfected these songs had he survived? On Sept. 8, Anti- will finally release “Bird Machine,” the Sparklehorse swan song few believed existed.

“What do you do with someone else’s art?” Matt said. “Music was so incredibly important to my brother. It saved him at times, and he meant every note. He did this stuff for people to hear. It needed to be out there.”

And, by the way, option #2 requires you to have your height and weight publicly measured on the courthouse steps, since we want accurate information on file if you ever flee.”

Yeah but is

“I stopped thinking because the magic man will bring me treats”

a compelling argument that you were fooled.

Fascists, including Mussolini, are explicit about where their treats come from: they’re going to use the coercive power of the state to rob Inferior People and distribute it to Deserving People.

What’s the expiating step in accepting this premise?

That you became convinced that you earned what was given to you by fascists?
That you couldn’t have guessed that they’d take the biggest cut, give you the fifth quarter of the spoils?
That it wouldn’t work in the long term?

Fascism is intoxication with your superiority, with the base assumption you are owed and other kinds of people have to pay up. There’s no mystery, no hypnosis.

Over and over we see people get caught with their figurative dicks out and they make excuses that are the same as people caught with their literal dicks out: they couldn’t do otherwise, they were tempted, compelled by an allure.

There is no fucking way, in this digital world, that we should have to wait until tomorrow for a damn mugshot.

All the other mug shots came out in real time. My guess is that there’s some bullshit about touching it up to look less hideous.

Would’ve been cool if they found some kind of pretext to hold Trump overnight, so he could get the full experience of Fulton County Jail like the little people do.

Too true. It’s a good example of how society is so thoroughly soaked in right wing shit-thought that even anti-oppression narratives tend to be self-subverting.

If there are any Trump sympathizers in downtown Atlanta, I’d expect to find them on staff at the Fulton County Jail.

Representative Hank Johnson (D-GA) is also Soka Gakkai. I don’t know much about them except that one of the Japanese political parties was associated with them, but I’ve not heard any assertions that he’s homophobic.

Soka Gakkai runs the Komeito party. It is a junior partner in the Liberal Democratic Party coalition. It is my understanding that while they agree with LDP on most everything (including things we would consider rather conservative, such as LGBTQIA+ rights), they are dead set against any change to Article 9 of the Japanese constitution (which basically outlaws Japan being involved in wars). When I was in Tokyo last November, the neighborhood I stayed in was plastered (as much as any neighborhood in Tokyo could be, it was VERY organized) with signs for Komeito candidates in an election held earlier this year. Apparently Ota City has a significant number of Soka Gakkai members in it.

In extremely local news:

The used car dealer called this morning to say the seat belt latch has not arrived, so the car is not yet repaired. He’s hoping for tomorrow.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Harold slowed down over Colorado and Utah, so our severe thunderstorms and torrential rain don’t arrive until tomorrow now.

We ordered falafel for dinner and they delivered THE. WORST. FOOD. I. EVER. ATE.

I gave a large tip to the guy for bringing our food in the rain—not his fault it was barely edible.

Should I leave the restaurant a one-star review?

YES. Praise the delivery driver but point out the food was lousy and explain why.

What’s Next for the Wagner Group?
The infamous Russian mercenary group finds itself without a leader, but still with a mission.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the energetic and infamous leader of the Wagner Group mercenary outfit, met his untimely demise after his plane was downed outside of Moscow, two months to the day after the Wagner mutiny that almost unraveled Putin’s power vertical. Coincidence? In Putin’s Russia? Probably not.

Prigozhin leaves behind a sprawling mercenary-criminal enterprise that spans hot spots around the globe, from the war in Ukraine to Middle East conflict zones like Syria and Libya to fragile states in sub-Saharan Africa like Mali and the Central African Republic.

So what’s next for the Wagner Group? Your trusty SitRep authors have spent most of the past 24 hours asking Western national security officials and experts that exact question, and we’ve compiled here what we’re hearing for our dear readers.

My impression is that it is across the board.
