That is a very good point. TV was saturated with violent westerns in the late 50s and early 60s. There were something like 32 western series on the 3 networks in 1959, at least one per night for each network and sometimes two. Some of them were extremely well written and acted but almost all featured a mythology built around guns. This was reflected in many of the titles, Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel, the Rifleman etc. The latter show featured some amazing on-scene chemistry between the eponymous rifleman, Luke McCain, played by Chuck Connors, and his young son Mark, played by Johnny Crawford. It is an excellent potrayal of parenting and, in fact, of single parenting. During the series, though, Lucas killed something 120 people, all richly deserving bad guys, of course.
