How do you ask someone where their lineage traces back to? Like, if it’s obvious they have Asian features, how do you ask where their ancestors came from?

I usually go by their name. is it semi-Hispanic like Filipino, is it really short 3 letters or less like Korean, does it have a lot of O’s or As like Japanese, etc. My name is a color so what the fuck do I know. You could just ask what kind of name thy have is. It’s not really rude question if asked without some sort of implied malice.
