Sure enough, Yuppie Neighbor is back to power blasting paint ships again today. Now he's carefully blasting them into the house on the other side of him. I left my shop vac out hoping to drop a hint, he could have vacuumed them up in an hour or two. Instead he's going to spend all day today, and probably tomorow with the power washer. I guess what's really really frustrating isn;t so much the environmental pollution, but that he's putting so much effort and time into it. I could have scraped that porch by hand and cleaned up in 8-10 hours. He's spending at least 4 ten hour days blasting paint chips into the soil with a power tool.

Made real progress today at last on the feature I mentioned a while ago -- the ability to promote LGF Pages to the front page.
Turned out to be much more complicated than I originally thought; it required some upgrading of the user permissions system and some semi-gnarly MySQL table joining queries. But the actual code to promote a Page is almost ready to test.

Harry Reid rips the turtle a new asshole:
Republican leaders still refuse to negotiate in good faith. Revenue is off the calendar - no way we can talk about revenue. Entitlements? Oh, they're after entitlements. Medicare, Social Security. The Speaker and Republican Leader should know that merely saying you have an agreement in front of a few television cameras doesn't make it so. The Republican Leader at the press event says he's engaged. Fortunately, members of his caucus are - at least as far as I'm concerned and my members - are more engaged than he is. There are meaningful talks going on with some of his members and my Senators. While the Republican Leader is holding meaningless press conferences, his members are reaching out to me, and other members as I've just indicated. They're coming forward with thoughtful ideas to try to move the process forward. I welcome their ideas, and ask all members to continue these discussions. America is watching us, and they're demanding a result that's balanced. I say to my friend, and he is my friend, the Republican Leader - I'll come to his office, I will go to the White House with him, I will do anything that I can do to try to move this process forward. As respectfully as I can to my friend, the senior Senator from Kentucky, the process has not been moved forward during this day.
McConnell is an ass. Reid is working with non-ranking Republicans to get a deal done.

Ah, an open thread.
I just got home from indulging in my gun geek side. First I went to a gun show out in the countryside to sell a few things off and then went back to my FLGS and paid off an old (1958) Colt Model 357. This was the model that preceded the famous Python and is same internally but it is much less well known and hence much cheaper for similar quality. This one has much bluing loss and Pachmayr grips so it goes for even less as a result. But mechanically it is still as good as when it left New Haven. 48 hour waiting period then off to the range :D It also makes me all the more eagerly await hunting season.
Hope everyone else is having a pleasant weekend.

Said Breivik, little less than 3 years ago, at Gates of Vienna:
Fjordman: “I have called for a global infidel strategy of containment of the Islamic world as far as possible, which includes banning Muslim immigration.”
What about the 5-10-15-20% of Muslims that are already inside the country? Although delayed, they will eventually reach 50%+ even in hostile climates (Closed borders/anti-immigration laws/anti Sharia laws) due to a combination of high birthrates and a progressive emigration of natives (see Kosovo/Lebanon demographic development). In other words, anti-immigration laws/closed borders will only delay a Muslim takeover at best. Even in areas with a poor living standards/weak economies (like Kosovo was) they will outbreed non-muslims. It will only take them a few more decades.
So again, how exactly would banning Muslim immigration + containing the Muslim world save us in the long term?
[…]
Why havent you or any of the other current authors on the Eurabia related issues/Islamisation of Europe (Fjordman, Spencer, Ye`or, Bostom etc.) brought up the “D” word? I assume because it is considered a fascist method in nature, which would undermine your/their work? Why would it undermine their efforts when it is the only rational conclusion, based on the above argument? As far as I know, it’s not illegal in Europe to suggest deportation as a future method when discussing future hypothetical World Orders (correct me if im wrong though, Im not 100% sure, lol)!?
Said elsewhere just a few days ago:
Unlike Gates of Vienna, the admins of 1389 Blog have reached the conclusion that deportation will, at some point, be necessary to avert this outcome. That said, neither 1389 Blog nor its admins condone the initiation of violence to influence public policy with regard to the Muslim presence in non-Muslim countries, or for any other reason.

Sheesh. Rain actually fell over a small part of Lubbock last night (though not at my place) and the chances for tonight are 30%. If it doesn't rain by midnight tomorrow, this will be the second consecutive month with no measurable rainfall. The high today has been 94, the lowest in several weeks. We have long since set a new record for days over 100. The old record was 29. We are currently at 40 with two more months of hot weather to go, so we will almost certainly double the old record. Indeed, we can probably count October as a month for potential 100+ days now. It has been 100 in October just once here, on October 3rd 2000, but I would look for this unfortunate record to fall as well. Do I hear November? The all time high for November was 90 on November 9th, 2006, so it may not be unthinkable in this new era of hothouse climate. On the other side of the solstice, March may be an even more likely candidate since it has actually gotten well into the 90s during that month, with an all-time high of 95 on March 11, 1989.

Nice. I got another CMP M1 Garand today, special grade, not period correct of course but it's otherwise in minty perfect condition and thus a shooter. Also took possession of that Erfurt Luger I mentioned a while ago. There's also an IBM Carbine at one of the local shops that's been tempting me, but I've been buying too much lately and already have an Inland.
Oh, that's a drool maker. I'd love to afford one but between the Colt and my recent Stoeger Uplander Supreme, my toy budget is pretty much tapped. I'll admit, I'm much more likely to go for a Carbine than a Garand, just because I've always had a weak spot for the first US assault rifle. ;)

Y, 2 diff words, sound different, used differently, written/rendered differently. Generally, never used in mixed company. -er is almost never used except when quoting someone or making fun of a bigot.
Right wing bigots complain that blacks can use the word with impunity but they get called racist when they use it, then they end up calling blacks who use it racist.
Personally I think some people have trouble understanding concepts even marginally dissimilar to their own.

Shooting first scenes on a short SciFi film project. Been working on the story for a year. Got a writer for dialog, who has talked me into trying some on camera time myself. Complicated shoot too. Inside a vehicle, outside driving by, close ups, and establishment shots. Feels like what I imagine film school immersion is like.
Using a Lensbaby for some shots, wide angle lens for landscape scenes. Lensbaby is a very creative tilt shift optical system. Lets my HDSLR do some of the focus tricks reserved for medium format cameras.

The movie combines cowboys with science fiction only for the sake of doing it, for the fun of it.

I'm not afraid of insects taking over the world, and you know why? It would take about a million ants just to aim a gun at me, let alone fire it. And you know what I'm doing while they're aiming it at me? I just sort of slip off to the side, and then suddenly run up and kick the gun out of their hands.

As one of my favorite taglines says, "I don't know if faith can move mountains but I've seen what it does for skyscrapers." The problem isn't a public official "speaking of prayer," it's all the bigoted, insane, and unpatriotic types he's invited to participate with him.

No.

BTW, don't the word of someone from the actual culture. Forget what you thought you heard in a song or by a drug dealer lol. Get to know some Asian-American kids or Latino kids. They use -a with each other in the same way.

One says "I'm different and screw them" and the other says "you're different and screw you".
"My -a" doesn't say that. Neither does -a, please. Both are contextual but you would have to be literate in Black dialects to understand it when said.
Next we can discuss the usage of the word "hoe".
Knock yourself out.

Yeah, but I wanted a 30-06 with a good bore that was legal for use in as issued CMP matches and could deliver a follow up shot faster than my 1903a3 for hunting medium game. No way was I going to drag the M1D through the woods. Remington .223 just doesn't interest me at all. I've seen people use .30 carbine for javelinas around here but it's just not big enough for mule deer and I don't want any chance of causing a lingering wound to an animal. If I'm going to shoot something for food I want to get the suffering part over with as swiftly as possible.
Been waiting for carbines to show up at Anniston CMP again--they had some a while back that returned from Chile or Argentina.

That was total of all guns, I think, including M1 Garands as well as carbines. They could be released over a number of years, though. And even if there are 10s of thousands of them, the reduction in price would also allow more people to take up shooting and the rifles themselves would be great tools for explaining WWII and Korean War history to younger Americans.

Yeah, they're great little guns. Eventually I want to get a Rock-Ola and an IBM, also a paratrooper version if I ever leave California or the assault weapon law gets struck down. Right now the CMP isn't expecting any new shipments and the few they have get auctions off. My real love though is Marlin Golden 39A's, have a full size and recently picked up a 1959 Golden Mountie.

Problem is that they were shot out trash that CMP said "do not want" to. They would have cost too much to bring up to minimum standards. These were rifles the Koreans actually bought not had loaned to them like the ones from Greece or Denmark. These were used hard and put away wet, repeatedly from what I gather. The Korean Government is still trying to convince State to allow the import but when CMP turned them down, that pretty much killed it.

I think that there's more to a culture than what is served at dinner.
I think that the multiculturalism is indeed multiple cultures living together and sharing if not "the same goals and values" at least non conflicting goals and values.
It doesn't mean being assimilated to the point of having no traces of your original culture left behind besides culinary ones, and also the most important part of multiculturalism is that there must exist free and not blocked (and to a certain extent encouraged) cross pollination between all the cultures involved with people living truly side by side with people of a different culture. (IE If every culture has their own neighborhood/sticks to themselves that's not really multiculturalism)

re: #317 goddamnedfrank
This has nothing to do with rap music and clothing styles, it's about poverty.
Actually it's about two little n-words, one ending in "a" and one ending in "er".
But there's always someone who will use it as a pretext to scratch some itch they have about Our Endless Pathologies™, political correctness, drugs, rap, same old boring anxieties.
Black kids aren't even the only ones using "n-a". Lol
Thing is, I thought it might be different this time, since Naso Tang does at least hear a difference between the two words. It's a start; he's farther along than many.

Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!

People outside the millieu may not hear, know, or understand the differences, but that's basically irrelevant.
Being pretty damned white myself I think that many people aren't really reacting out of any misunderstanding of the differences, they're reacting to the fact that they can't get away with saying either one themselves. The fact that minorities can get away with saying something they can't really bugs the hell out of some people.

(IE If every culture has their own neighborhood/sticks to themselves that's not really multiculturalism)
There would be no discussion of the issue if that was not the common case.
In those cases where it is not, the issue goes away. When did you last hear a problem with Norwegians in Minnesota having a problem integrating (never mind the thing about who they elect)?

no, the speakers you refer to are illiterate in the language, not the critics...therefore they get their own dialect?...hahaha!...good grief
Steve, different parts of the country have their own dialects and meanings. Why should a culture under artificial stress not do the same? The US use of English, the Canuck use of English and the English use of English have quite a few differences. Your demand the language be treated as sacrosanct is unrealistic and certainly doesn't reflect reality.

Yeah, and even that's their own perception.
The word they think they hear, and are quick to correct in their own mind by substituting "er" for "a", is not the word they are so certain it is. But ohhh the earfuls you will get about all the pathologies you must certainly defend if you have a different interpretation of two little words. Rotfl!

What I find to be a faulty idea of multiculturalism is the the idea that people from vastly different cultures can get along without serious trouble in the absence of strong efforts put into assimilation. I find nothing at all to argue with you on this.
It's foolish to think that tossing people with different cultures together is going to have them get along instantly, even if those two people don't already have other issues (different races, different nationalities) to worry about.
I don't think that we should abase ourselves just to make others feel comfortable.
All that said, I also believe that as long as we as a nation put our best foot forward with malice or favoritism towards none (on a national scale at least) it is possible for people of any culture to come to live and let live with us, even if the changes require generations to take place.

Please don't question me too closely right away. Just posting this was hard enough.
Why was it hard?

People have different comfort zones is all.
For example, I have a hard as hell time talking with a doctor.

OT, but I am not getting any sleep tonight.
For dinner, the family had soup. Mom put out soup crackers, which I put in. I noticed they tasted funny after a while, and asked about it.
Turned out they had expired in June of 2009.
I am now having severe acid issues.

Does anyone else miss the late night open comic presentation threads? I was recently passed from my Dad another *BOX* of classic comics (in rather poor condition), but they were all from the late 60's to the early 70's of the DC and Marvels' heydays. It was cool to see Charles present them for a context and see where a thread wandered from there. I would love to post a few choice issues from Marvel's introduction of Thor, the Hulk, and the Fantastic Four, but I'm afraid it would be just spam psoting jpeg after scanned jpeg.
I have a few of the early comic issues separated already sequential page order for viewing, but wouldn't want to bog down the comment line with unneeded scans for appreciation.

Some might say 'it's just the internet', but I know that this community matters a great deal to you.
Still, you made a statement of opinion. People jumped down your throat for it, and to be honest I think the nagging about it has been a bit much, and you deserved better. However, you were uncertain enough of your opinion that you had no confidence that it was either a) accurate, b) clear enough to be expressed, or c) able to stand up to scrutiny.
Yet, despite this uncertainty, your response was not to try to learn more about the subject in order to form a more clear and more correct opinion. Your response was not to ask for more information, or to examine your belief and see if it might be wrong, or at the very least misinformed. Your response was to cling more tightly to your opinion, despite the fact that you believed that it wasn't going to stand up to any scrutiny, and to be afraid to discuss it out of fear that people would find more flaws in it.

It was hard, because when certain people say things here, a few others here, a very few but a very loud few, will jump all over it and instead of asking for clarification or explanation, will make assumptions about what the person MUST have meant, and will take it from there, leading not to a conversation or discussion, but a fight and bad feelings.

Sure, everyone's like that to some extent.
However, to me, it seems like the real fear you had was that you might be confronted with something that might lead you to question your opinion even more. And that might lead to you changing that opinion. And that's the really scary thing - information and facts that contradict what we've long believed.
I recall how morose you were after the episode on here where you learned your long-held opinion on progressive taxation was completely wrong. This seems to me to be another one.
My point is, this site is unique because it is far less of an echo chamber than any other forum I've seen. This is where people should learn to let go of their long-held beliefs if they're found wanting. And I think that attitude would do you a world of good, if you can wrap your head around it.

DF, I am going to hazard the thought here that part of the problem is that we're not talking about the same thing in this conversation. Leaving the quality of Zinn's work out of this (I can't judge, I know him by reputation only), who is setting public policy based on the works of Howard Zinn?

I'm not convinced DF really meant an official "policy"; I read it more like he used the word "policy" as a shortcut, meaning some folks talk as if something should be a policy and they speak loudly enough about it that the idea gains some traction.

DF, I am going to hazard the thought here that part of the problem is that we're not talking about the same thing in this conversation. Leaving the quality of Zinn's work out of this (I can't judge, I know him by reputation only), who is setting public policy based on the works of Howard Zinn?
I just used him as a example of zero-sum multiculturalism. Describing it in policy matters will require me to study some more. I want to make sure the examples I may think of will survive scrutiny, since I know they will be scrutinized. I don't want to post some lame "Outrageous Outrage".

I'm not. I think he was done by badly. And I don't really care that much about the conflict of opinions regarding this subject at all. I'm much more interested in his response to having his opinion challenged.
Look - I understand perfectly.
When a conversation is flowing with people who are interested in what you have to say, there will be back and forth and CLARIFICATION of what people man.
It's very easy in a quick written post to use a word that you don't mean the way others take it, or to not have an opinion fully formed enough to put into writing so that others will clearly understand it.
Now, all of that is OK if most everybody else agrees with you, because they will "fill in the blanks", so to speak, where you were unclear.
But woe be unto the person who does it with an opinion that others are ready to steamroll you about.

I'm not convinced DF really meant an official "policy"; I read it more like he used the word "policy" as a shortcut, meaning some folks talk as if something should be a policy and they speak loudly enough about it that the idea gains some traction.
This is why he was asked to clarify what he meant.

OK. I'm just not sure if we're talking about real-world influences, or just the kind of 'multiculturalism' promoted by wild-eyed college freshmen who've just figured out that not everyone is white, and think this will be news to you to.

And you are absolutely one of the ones who's interested in hearing what people have to say.
You know, there's enough back and forth conversation here that we get to sort of know certain aspects of people's personalities.
I will take a different tone with people who I know are 1) not really interested in a discussion about something I have an opinion about, and/or 2) are tough, than I do with a person who I know is 1) genuinely interested in knowing what I have to say, even if it's something they disagree with, and/or 2) someone who doesn't have as thick a skin as others. Indeed, it is. Sometimes, all it takes is saying something like the n-word with "a" is a different word from the n-word ending in "er".

ah, and you see, I think you needed that time to form the explanatory sentences in your head. When you first used the term, you had a definition in your head that made sense to you, but you hadn't really put it into written sentences. And sometimes it takes awhile to get the written version of an idea just right.

That, and because you are self-aware enough to sense when your worldview is built on shaky ground, and your uncertainty shows. That uncertainty is like a heady bucket of chum on the internet. However, it tells me something good - that you know when your opinions are poorly grounded, and you don't like it; you want your beliefs to be based in facts, but you value 'team loyalty' so much that you feel like changing your opinions based on facts might somehow be showing disloyalty. This conflict is what drives that uncertainty, from what I see.
There are other posters here, like lostlakehiker, who make a regular habit of dropping opinions not based in fact and acting like they are, even when called on it. But they never show uncertainty, because no amount of contrary facts will ever shake their beliefs. There is no point in arguing or piling on these types. You, on the other hand, have more self-awareness, and if you could get over this self-manufactured conflict, I think you'd both be happier and have a more nuanced, reality-based worldview.

There's a short story where people suddenly gain the ability to 'hear' what animals are thinking, with devastating results. re: #303 albusteve
speakers who cannot speak English well enough to be understood...you can pigeonhole them all you want into your prized subcultures...to most people they are appear to be simply people that can't speak English worth a shit...it's far less complicated than you need to make it
Glad you cleared that there up for us, Henry Higgins. Downdinged because it takes Rex Harrison to make that opinion sound charming.

I had the plumber and the tow truck guy arrive at the same time. Glad it's over.
A double dose of plumber-butt.

Such an amazing city. I used to work out of Manhattan, on and off.
We lived in Brooklyn up until I was 8 years old. More or less.

We've been talking about dealing with disagreements of various kinds, stemming from this multiculturalism flap.
It will pass.
As will the corn-on-the-cob I had for supper.

When I was jet-setting, I used to date someone in Borough Park. Super-interesting trips. That's my extent of knowledge of Brooklyn, though.

1. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy's definition of multiculturalism, to which someone linked previously, captures exactly what I perceive as nonviable about that concept:
Multiculturalism is a body of thought in political philosophy about the proper way to respond to cultural and religious diversity. Mere toleration of group differences is said to fall short of treating members of minority groups as equal citizens; recognition and positive accommodation of group differences are required...[boldface mine]
Color me very skeptical. Such an "ecosystem" is begging for predation. What are the stabilizing and corrective mechanisms?
2. I grant that the multiculturalism concept addresses a legitimate issue that will not disappear unless today's technology-based civilizations stagnate or collapse (or unless a global hegemony reappears).
Unfortunately, I do not view the multicultural model as viable. The "positive accommodation of group differences" strikes me as reminiscent of, but even less realistic than, the injunctions of the early Haight-Ashbury hippies to "do your own thing".
3. re: #483 Renaissance_Man
And that's the really scary thing - information and facts that contradict what we've long believed.
Afaic there is typically not enough information to distinguish between fundamentally differing points of view. There are too many plausible interpretations of too few facts; and even those "few" facts may be too many for a single individual to integrate. Not to mention spinning, disinformation and the like. How scary that is depends on how ruthless the holders of opposing views are prepared to be to impose those views.

1. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy's definition of multiculturalism, to which someone linked previously, captures exactly what I perceive as nonviable about that concept:
Assuming the Stanford/plato definition is the best one (I'm not convinced of that; it's one of many) I agree with your conclusion about so-called "multiculturalism" but from a much different perspective.
In my view, I wouldn't take umbrage with the idea of requiring positive accommodation of group differences, because to me the entire concept is a joke. It's not really a goal.
Nina Simone expressed it best in the heat of the Civil Rights movement in "Mississippi Goddamn" (1964)
You don't have to live next to me,
Just give me my equality
This is why many of us abandoned "multiculturalism", whatever that was supposed to be, some time in the early 90s. Positive accommodation or validation or recognition, especially when it's not in coming from certain groups, is a fool's goal. It's like trying to board a sinking ship that's intent on sending you directly to 3rd class, anyway.
It does amuse me, though -- except in the cases of the far right where they get violent and kill over perceived "multiculturalism" -- to watch the handwringing about the supposedly imminent end of the West.
In America, the west shows no signs of decline, post-Civil Rights. Just the opposite.
How scary that is depends on how ruthless the holders of opposing views are prepared to be to impose those views.
There is nothing scary about someone, no matter how ruthless, with opposing views. Anyone from a numerical minority tradition of any kind understands this, as opposition to one's views is the default.
What I don't want a return to is the type of society where homogeneity is required and ruthlessly imposed. Some like Breivik will kill his own people to get it.
We're not going back there again. That level of suppression only led to revolt.
