Stephen Colbert vs. Gamergate
It’s in the “Humor” category, but what’s going on in the nearly incomprehensible “Gamergate” controversy really isn’t terribly funny.

My younger sister is a COSplayer and loves her some video games. I’ve been paying attention on a cursory level to this GamerGate bullshit. I mean, loved ones are involved, y’know.
It’s a stupid fucking thing that in the end is highlighting some hardcore misogyny that’s been going on a long time in those circles.
This’ll be my one and only comment on the matter, because I truly don’t give a shit one way or another. And my sister is fine, she grew up in the mountains and knows how to use a knife.

I mean, it’s just games. Right? Except to a segment of menfolk whose very identities seem threatened by the merest hint of estrogen bespoiling their manspace. That’s an actual thing now in real estate, men gotta have their man caves free of girl cooties, presumably. Like “No Girls Alowed” treehouses in the days of the Little Rascals.
GamerGate is so nothing new to women. That it seems so surprising to many men is at once heartening and sad,

Yeah, I suppose this is where I try to interject one of the Gamergate side of things with a few paragraphs of history and links to back it all up, only to be called “less than a shitstain” again and bow out in frustration. Or I could correct some meme (such as this all being sparked by a false “sex for reviews” scandal — not true) and be called a “mysgonistic dudebro neckbeard” like over on the Kos.
It’s been a frustrating few weeks.
Really this is reminding me of trying to debate religion or some of the false realities of the tea-party — people pick one of the two sides and refuse to see anything but black and white, and good luck trying to change anyone’s minds. Of course, this is exactly what a political scientist pointed out would happen when this all started, so…
Well, anyway. I would like to share these wonderful interviews with everyone if they are interested.
David Pakman, an independent progressive liberal reporter who has his own show on the AM dial, has been covering this with 4 (so far) really good interviews.
(Pakman, some of you may remember, was the guy who had the Jewish center shooter on his show before the shooting (where the shooter had an absolute meltdown), as well as the guy who had a representative of Fred Phelps clan on who antagonized a member of anonymous on the air — who hacked their website in real time out of spite. He’s made a name for himself for surprisingly hard hitting interviews and doing a significant amount of research about subjects before they come on his show.
Anyway, he has 4 interviews so far about this. First up with professional grifter Brianna Wu:
Youtube Video
Next up with Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos (who Mrs. Wu attempted to throw under the bus on the previous interview), who has been covering this for the far right:
Youtube Video
Next up being an interview with (if you believe the anti-gamergate side) a nonexistant female Gamergate supporter, Jennie Bharaj:

Disclosure: Haven’t watched the Jennie one, and apparently she did not come across very prepared.
And finally, today’s interview, John “TotalBiscuit” Bain, an independent games journalist who has some really fascinating insight:

I’m sure there are women support that mess. That doesn’t change the sequence of events that led to the hashtag, that are directly relevant to that sex for reviews non-scandal that you think is irrelevant. Also, your descriptions could use some work. Brianna Wu has released a game from her studio, even if you think she is a “professional grifter.”

Gamergate is very much like the Republican party. The extremists and jackasses own the message/party, so there needs to be visible and non-trivial efforts made to drain the relevant swamps before it can be anything other than a target for derision.
As in the case of the Republican party, a mass exodus of decent people is probably the realistic path forward.

If you guys like games, especially a nice casual experience, “Fantasy Life” on the 3DS is amazingly charming. The best way I can describe it is “Skyrim as made by the team that made Dragon Quest 9”. It’s got elements of Skyrim, Animal Crossing, and Monster Hunter in it. It’s very slow paced and casual, great for popping open for a little bit on the bus.
I started off as an Alchemist and the gameplay has been mostly “go out into the forests and find water and herbs, come back and make potions, chat with the explosives obsessed guild leader, head out into town and see what medicines people want…”
Really charming.

I feel like I shouldn’t post this, but at the same time, fuck this whole issue and I feel like it’s important for the non-gamers who read here to understand why this matters.
From my own experiences, I keep very quiet about my gender when playing multiplayer games. That means that all forms of voice chat are out unless I know and trust the people I am playing with.
You can’t sit and listen to trade chat in World of Warcraft to this day without being aware that there is a strong misogynist aspect to the gaming community. (Please note: I am aware this is not all gamers. I am aware this may not even be the majority of gamers. But much like this mess, the extremists are vocal and dominate the conversation - and that’s before you take into account online reputation with other players - and this is one of the primary interactions I see with other people in the game, outside of people I know.) Yesterday’s conversations that I observed included a request for someone to “show me your tatas” - and I was in trade for all of five minutes.
So now we have women who make games (which is an even more male-dominated segment than the normal techie world) being harassed in the name of …”ethics in gaming journalism”… and I am supposed to believe this is an accurate description of what is driving the movement? (And this is, of course, assuming that I haven’t been aware of what’s going on since relatively close to the start …which would be a bad assumption, but, you know.)
I don’t buy bridges, or waterfront property in Arizona.
And now I really am going to go pet cats and stitch.

One of the older games I miss was the Deception series on PlayStation. The basic premise was NPCs would attempt to find out the secrets in a haunted castle/mansion. The reason the castle was haunted was because the player was setting up different series of traps and was luring adventurers to their doom. You unlocked various lures and traps to set up in the game, and you had to be the bait. You had no attacks you could use against the enemies. It was all your trap prep.

Oh yes, it’s probably the biggest collection or JRPG names I’ve seen work on a single game since Chrono Trigger.
Another good one if you have a mobile or tablet is Terra Battle. It’s by the guy who made the original Final Fantasy (Mistwalker) and while it’s a free to play game — so it has the stamina bar and all that — they’re openly hostile to the traditional pay to win model.
Honestly it (Terra Battle) feels like a demo for a console Final Fantasy Tactics style game that they are working on — using the mobile game to build up hype and start making art assetts et all. Plus it has freaking amazing Uematsu music, hoooly-cow. I need the OST.

Well I guess we are dealing with a subculture of young men who spend the bulk of their free time playing games, develop no viable social skills and neglect basic grooming. They grow terribly frustrated because attractive women do not fall for them spontaneously without any major effort on their own part.

Reading WWI history recently tells me Petain was well respected among his troops because he spent time with them near the front. Most of the other commanders were off in some cushy villa coming up with battle plans hundreds of miles from the battles.

I’ve been saying much the same thing since the news came down that he was captured alive. Every police force in the country should learn something from this - that it is possible to bring even a cop killer in without even a shot fired.
But they wont. People will continue to die in a hail of gunfire, especially black men, because the cops know that they can claim justification for use of deadly force and prosecutors will usually back them up. It usually takes a DOJ investigation to prod even a civil rights case against a police officer, and even then it’s not a certainty.
Since it’s Friday, and the FPD chief has claimed that he isn’t being fired or resigning earlier in the week, watch for some action out of Ferguson around 4pm today (just a guess btw). Because that’s how they roll in the Shire Greater St. Louis area.

MSF/DWB warns US on Ebola quarantines reducing number of health workers willing to stop outbreak at its source http://t.co/6r77DXJNR7— lawhawk (@lawhawk) October 31, 2014
All the politicians pushing quarantines and separate state policies that create a patchwork of policies that aren’t even totally public (see New Jersey), is having a direct effect on the emergency response to Ebola in Africa - it’s making it even tougher than usual to get health workers to donate time and effort in Africa. DWB is already contemplating changes to accommodate the draconian quarantine proposals, by limiting the time people have in contact with Ebola patients so that they can avoid the quarantine stays.
And each day limiting treatment to patients means another day that the outbreak takes more lives in West Africa, patients get suboptimal care - even on African standards, and the chances that more stray cases end up outside the outbreak epicenter.
Meanwhile, other African countries should absolutely ashamed of their response to a crisis in their backyard. They promised 2,000 health workers to aid in the response. None have actually delivered. They’ve promised funds. They are short of what they promised.
These are the countries that are most likely to have an outbreak spread to their borders, and yet their attitude is to bury their heads in the sand.

Nationally, there’s about 200 people being monitored for Ebola - with about 100 in New Jersey.
None have shown any symptoms.
There is only one active case of a patient being treated for Ebola in the US. That’s Dr. Spencer at Bellevue in NYC.
That’s it.
Out of more than 300 million people in the US. 1 active case; a handful of survivors who got prompt treatment here, and 200 people being monitored for a couple of weeks.
Once Dr. Spencer hopefully makes his recovery and is Ebola-free, then it’s another 3 weeks until you can rule out any further Ebola cases (unless a new case comes into the US thereafter).
In that same time, how many people will die of influenza, heart disease, or other medical conditions, let alone firearms.
But politicians know that hyping the fear factor and pushing for quarantines makes them look like they’re doing something to deal with a public health crisis - that is in actually located on a completely different continent and which could be brought under control if more countries sent health care workers to swiftly improve treatment, along with the necessary hydration kits to improve the chances of recovering.
If people in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea see more people surviving the disease, they’ll come to get treatment sooner, rather than wait until it’s too late - infecting others along the way.
That’s how this outbreak ends.
Not with a quarantine, but with active treatment by health experts with the necessary gear at their disposal.

He was one of the overachievers in college it seems:
He graduated with honors from the University of Louisville with a B.A. in political science in 1964. McConnell was president of the Student Council of the College of Arts and Sciences and a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He has maintained strong ties to his alma mater and “remains a rabid fan of its sports teams.”[7] Three years later, McConnell graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Law, where he was president of the Student Bar Association.

It’s a small part of your ongoing war against Holocaust denial. This gun-fucking meme is a part of Holocaust denial. The gun-fuckers want to co-opt the Holocaust for themselves so they make is about gun control.
A bunch of random gun-owning civilians could NOT HAVE STOPPED the Holocaust by themselves.
Seems to me that the gun nuts are suffering from severe future shock. They find this world incomprehensible and therefore threatening. Because nearly all of them come from the same cadre that denigrates history and science they lack the tools to assuage their discomfort so they turn to the one means that they feel will enable them to assert control: guns. Anything that in any way implies that guns won’t endow them with complete control is reflexively hated and vilified. They are, as a group, the most continuously frightened Americans that I’ve seen in my 66 years.

I’m a gamer, hell I am currently in costume as Connor from Assassin’s Creed 3. While I do sympathize with the feminist take on this one of the things Colbert highlighted was a scene from Dragon Age with regard to “Whores”. Given the setting of Dragon Age having “whores” would be perfectly legitimate to the setting, as would a level of Mysogyny, we are, after all, talking about a Medieval setting. I played the original Dragon Age and there were plenty of strong female characters that didn’t necessarily fit the stereotype so often seen in video games.
Now when it comes to Grand Theft Auto, sure there is plenty of violence towards women in the game but then again the game is violent towards everyone. It’s parody bordering on farce that pokes fun at so many stereotypes it’s hard to take seriously.
Yeah there is a lot of mysogyny in video games and it should be addressed but at the same time there are plenty of instances where female characters play a strong and prominent role in those games.
I think the real thing that needs to be addressed is the rancid underbelly of gaming with regard to boys (I won’t call them men) and how they treat women who play games and treat others in general. I’ve been sucked back into World Of Tanks and seeing some of the shit in chat is at some points hysterical, at others a complete and utter disgrace to my gender and at times race.

As an Addendum to the above post one of the MSNBC shows had Gloria Steinem on yesterday who made the same, tired generalization about gamers that we’re all somehow white males under 25. She obviously hasn’t got with the times. The average age of my clan mates in WoT is 35, with only a few teenagers and our oldest member is a retiree.
In my old Age Of Conan guild the majority of the guild was over 25 and some were in there 50’s. The group I worked with on a Neverwinter Nights perpetual world were all in their 30’s and up (and that was years ago). The average age, look and makeup of gamers is not what it once was.

Dragon Age: Origins suffered from several cases of the RapeAsBackstory trope, the scene in the Colbert’s video is probably one of the least objectionable of the ones in that particular sequence if I recall correctly.

Wow. Two completely contradictory reports. I love it when that happens.
CNN: The judge reversed himself.
(CNN) — [Breaking news update, posted at 12:57 p.m. ET]
A Maine judge on Friday ruled that state health officials failed to prove the need for an order enforcing an Ebola quarantine for a nurse who defied the quarantine in a tense standoff with state authorities. District Court Chief Judge Charles LaVerdiere ordered nurse Kaci Hickox, who recently returned to the United States after treating Ebola patients in Sierra Leone, to submit to “direct active monitoring,” coordinate travel with public health officials and immediately notify health authorities should symptoms appear. Her attorney, Norman Siegel, called the decision a victory. On Thursday, the judge had ordered stricter limits on Hickox.[Previous story, posted at 12:35 p.m. ET]
A Maine judge has ordered a quarantine for nurse Kaci Hickox, who defied her Ebola quarantine in a tense standoff with state authorities.
District Court Chief Judge Charles LaVerdiere ordered Hickox, who recently returned to the United States after treating Ebola patients in Sierra Leone, to submit to “direct active monitoring” and “not to be present in public places,” such as shopping centers or movie theaters, except to receive necessary health care.

Well, of course there is:
PETITION STARTED to Have Kaci Hickox Obey Quarantine or Lose License http://t.co/rY6CPqPyzt via @gatewaypundit— Jim Hoft (@gatewaypundit) October 31, 2014
And of course the same people warning that Obama would set up FEMA camps are all up in arms because the Obama Administration isn’t setting up camps to quarantine people who worked with Ebola patients, or who might have come from countries where Ebola is currently epidemic.
Lest we forget - there’s one current active case of Ebola in the US. No one else is currently symptomatic other than Dr. Spencer. Since the mishandling of Mr. Duncan and subsequent two infections, it looks like Dallas Presbyterian is in the clear with no new infections.
We’ll have to wait a few weeks more - beyond the all clear on Dr. Spencer’s Ebola-free tests to give the all clear in NY, but we’re another 2 weeks before it’s definitive that Dr. Spencer didn’t pass on the disease to anyone he came into contact before being hospitalized. With each passing day that doesn’t result in a confirmed infection, the less likely it is that he passed it on to someone with direct contact.
Same with Nurse Hickox.
And let’s not forget, the judge found that the state didn’t meet its burdens.

Irony. How does it work?
