It will be ten years this June since I graduated high school. Drove my high school classmates crazy I bet with my obnoxious liberalism back then. It will be fun to see old friends this year and to tell stories of the past ten years. I’ve been around quite a bit the past ten years. From San Francisco to Bratislava. Known the lows but the good times too. This past year has been great. I became an uncle for the first time and I love my niece as if she were my own daughter.

I’m curious. Who decided on this particular date, why isn’t the New Year celebrated on a more logical date, like one of the Solstices or Equinoxes? I know that it’s a purely arbitrary point in time, that it’s not like there is a finish line that we cross.

Well, the Chinese calendar is a couple of weeks behind the Gregorian one.
But yeah, the solstices would make much more sense as beginnings or endings.
And then there are those cultures which use a lunar calendar, which are another matter.

Took me just a couple of moments to find out that it’s about as complex as I figured it was….
The celebration of the new year on January 1st is a relatively new phenomenon. The earliest recording of a new year celebration is believed to have been in Mesopotamia, c. 2000 B.C. and was celebrated around the time of the vernal equinox, in mid-March. A variety of other dates tied to the seasons were also used by various ancient cultures. The Egyptians, Phoenicians, and Persians began their new year with the fall equinox, and the Greeks celebrated it on the winter solstice.
Early Roman Calendar: March 1st Rings in the New Year
The early Roman calendar designated March 1 as the new year. The calendar had just ten months, beginning with March. That the new year once began with the month of March is still reflected in some of the names of the months. September through December, our ninth through twelfth months, were originally positioned as the seventh through tenth months (septem is Latin for “seven,” octo is “eight,” novem is “nine,” and decem is “ten.”January Joins the Calendar
The first time the new year was celebrated on January 1st was in Rome in 153 B.C. (In fact, the month of January did not even exist until around 700 B.C., when the second king of Rome, Numa Pontilius, added the months of January and February.) The new year was moved from March to January because that was the beginning of the civil year, the month that the two newly elected Roman consuls—the highest officials in the Roman republic—began their one-year tenure. But this new year date was not always strictly and widely observed, and the new year was still sometimes celebrated on March 1.Julian Calendar: January 1st Officially Instituted as the New Year
In 46 B.C. Julius Caesar introduced a new, solar-based calendar that was a vast improvement on the ancient Roman calendar, which was a lunar system that had become wildly inaccurate over the years. The Julian calendar decreed that the new year would occur with January 1, and within the Roman world, January 1 became the consistently observed start of the new year.Middle Ages: January 1st Abolished
In medieval Europe, however, the celebrations accompanying the new year were considered pagan and unchristian like, and in 567 the Council of Tours abolished January 1 as the beginning of the year. At various times and in various places throughout medieval Christian Europe, the new year was celebrated on Dec. 25, the birth of Jesus; March 1; March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation; and Easter.Gregorian Calendar: January 1st Restored
In 1582, the Gregorian calendar reform restored January 1 as new year’s day. Although most Catholic countries adopted the Gregorian calendar almost immediately, it was only gradually adopted among Protestant countries. The British, for example, did not adopt the reformed calendar until 1752. Until then, the British Empire —and their American colonies— still celebrated the new year in March. For more New Year’s features see New Year’s Traditions and Saying “Happy New Year!” Around the World .

The latter is the hard part. Most people I have known have been older than me, many are now passed, some will do so shortly. I need to start making younger friends.

Funny you say that, all of the people that matter the most to me, the folks that I would consider dear and close friends, are pretty much all older than me. I have a lot of friends my age and younger, but they seem so transient. It’s like I get to be friends with them for a few years then I never see them again.

The real cultural hegemony is that we use 7 day weeks.
Then we are still using numerology with 24 hour days and 60 minute hours.
If I were to design our time keeping from the top, I’d use the solstices to tell years, and divide each day into 1000 equal time-units.

Speaking of hospitals, my father got his latest round of scans of his neck reviewed today. The VA is, in the time-honored tradition, moving with all the pace of a glacier in getting him care for the pinched nerve in his neck. First doctor tells him three months ago that the pain and tingling in his right arm and neck is due to arthritis impinging on his spinal cord and he might need surgery to remove some of the inflamed tissue. Month later, another doctor says he needs an MRI, then changes diagnosis to multiple blown disks and possible bone spurs. Then two weeks ago, yet another doctor, a pain specialist, says the MRI was inconclusive and he needs to have some X-rays taken because it might be a cracked vertebrae.
So he goes back to that doctor today, only to be told what the first doctor told him three months ago: He’s got arthritis in his neck and now the VA bean counters want to continue the “conservative” treatment path of injections.
*sigh*

Watching the last two tenth Doctor episodes, from 2009-2010. To tell you how long Moffat and Davies were planning the 50th anniversary special, the Time Lords in “The End of Time” mention that the Doctor still has the Moment, and will use it. That one fleeting sentence is the basis of the 50th anniversary episode, shown at the end of 2013.

I got the impression that “Day of the Doctor” had been the culmination of everything that Davies and Moffat had been working towards since the series began again. Unfortunately, “Time of the Doctor” then ended up feeling like Moffat slapped it together out of contrivances to clear up all the remaining hanging questions of Smith’s tenure as the Doctor.

Most of it will but it depends on what happens once the Cubs reach the World series and on if their getting there is a one-off or something more.
But I the Red Sox fanbase has largely stayed since the BoSox won the World Series. Of course that’s helped by the fact that Boston has won another WS championship since then and remains one of the AL’s best teams.

I’ve come to conclude over the years that show runners rarely plan things out past the next season. Only one man I know who started a series with everything planned out and that was JMS with Babylon 5. And even that fell apart almost from the beginning when one of the key actresses of the first planned arc said she wouldn’t returning after the pilot.

Yeah, but the problem is that the belief that there would be no fifth season meant JMS had to thrown all the ideas he’d saved up for that into the fourth, closing up all the hanging threads, only to find out at the last minute that the series had been greenlit for another season. So the fifth season suffered from all the big battles having already been fought.

Well, this is bit different. The homeowner in this case didn’t fire until the man was actually trying to enter his house and he issued a warning before he fired. He also fired only one shot. So he did more than the law required and he could not have known the person trying to get in had a history of sleepwalking and didn’t know what he was doing. So the shooting was tragic, but in my view it was justifiable.

I’m staying in tonight for a number of reasons…
1. I had no plans anyway!
2. It’s DFW and driving anywhere on a drinking holiday is like playing Battleship with Death, except he’s better at it than in Bill & Ted.
3. Rain/mix/sleet is scheduled to start around 2 A.M. here so even if I was going out… I wouldn’t be.
There’s a bottle of Yellow Tail “Bubbles” in my immediate future (which by the way is a fantastic cheap alternative to Champagne. It’s 90% of the Champagne experience for 25% of the price, and I say that as a wine snob.)
Besides the fizz I’m not sure what to do. Watch something on TV? Goof around on the internet? Decisions, decisions.

The occasion of my visit is the wedding of a fine young lady, a former student who 18 months ago was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Chemo was successful, and her hair has grown back in again. She looks fine.

This homeowner didn’t just fire away, that’s one of the tragic parts. He used restraint and gave an honest warning, but through no fault of his without him having any way to know it, the man trying to break in couldn’t understand the warning.
This incident was tragic because no one really did anything wrong and somebody died anyways.

Sort of raises the question of just what happens when the Cubs finally do beat the “curse.” Will the fanbase remain devoutly loyal to them or will they move on, the “next year” they’ve waited ages for come and gone?
From Wikipedia:
In 2003 (incidentally, the Chinese zodiac’s Year of the Goat), a group of Cubs fans headed to Houston with a billy goat named “Virgil Homer” and attempted to gain entrance to Minute Maid Park, home of the Astros, division rivals of the Cubs at the time.[5] After they were denied entrance, they unfurled a scroll, read a verse and proclaimed they were “reversing the curse.” The Cubs won the division that year and then came within five outs of playing in the World Series, but were undone…
One of the 3 fans that took the goat was my son. Hardcore Cub fan, got to meet several past players after the trip mentioned above, including Ron Santo. I had taken him to a couple of Cubs games when he was a kid and guess it stuck.
I’ve wondered over the years if I’m guilty of child abuse…;)

There’s a megachurch not too far from me that hangs a huge banner - like maybe forty feet long - advertising services scheduled around the football game, so you don’t miss your Jesus OR your Football. They have some clever slogan on the banner which I’ve forgotten, but I first saw that banner during my pseudo-Jewish religious phase a few years back, and it left me “SMH” (as the kids say on Facetubes.)

Which is why when I binge-rewatched B5, I skipped the last season. Lost interest.

Modern naval tactics has always been sort of neat to follow since there is an inherent conservatism regarding risk of losing ships. In part simply due to the time and resources spent in getting a ship built, commissioned, manned, and trained up. You have to put them in harm’s way in order to win, but still don’t want to lose units. Thus you see ships get “mission killed” with relatively non-threatening damage since to continue without withdrawing for repairs would risk complete loss. But the withdraw of the unit (often with protecting escorts) would also affect the on-going operation.

re: #152 Belafon
I remember a conversation with my dad about the Russkies shooting down MH17… I told him about how all kinds of details had been sussed out and posted over twitter. Like the actual launch vehicle had been tracked into town, photographed, the missile launch trail possibly photographed, tracks from the vehicle were spotted on satellite, then the offending launcher now minus one missile was tracked back through another town and back into pro-Russian territory… And all this was disseminated over twitter and blogs… Back when I was a kid, stuff like that might come out as a footnote in a Tom Clancy novel ten years after the fact.
I think part of the growing pains with twitter, blogs, etc. exposing these horrible wrong-doings like MH17, Ferguson, etc. is learning how to filter and find the truth.
It’s interesting how the TV no longer controls the narrative. Now you get two versions of a story - what’s gleaned online, and what’s on the boob tube. Fox and CNN, etc. are so obviously reacting to public groundswell that they come off looking like they speak a foreign language. Actually maybe the TV networks are as much in the dust as the not-twitter-savvy… We’re all just trying to make up a story to fit the noise.

I saw a trailer for a Peanuts movie coming out soon. I wonder how many kids will watch. My 15 year old started to ask me how the dog could sit on the edge of the roof. And then why is he flying instead of the kids? I asked her why the sponge won’t shut up. (Actually I’m a total Spongebob geek.)

Better Call Saul is going to be epic.
It’s how GG started out, no doubt. Sleazy lawyer who bilked his clients until he found a few “friends” on the rightwing libertarian side who gave him room to spew, sprinkling just enough in his rhetoric to fool a few on the left in the process. Words matter, and he tosses them around indiscriminately and freely. There are a lot of naive people for whom “transparency” is never transparent enough.
Little Glenn just wants to have his cake and eat it, too, but not bake it himself, as most libertarians do.

Speaking of hate…
Leelah Alcorn’s death was tragic, but harassing her parents is not the answer
I’m against gender roles—let me say that out front. I’m a feminist who thinks that males are not being encouraged/trained enough to accept “female” roles while women are fighting to achieve parity with them, and often cave in to accepting “male behavior” in order to “get ahead”. Also, I don’t think enough scientific inquiry has gone into the phenomenon known as “transgender” yet. And even though the Alcorns are religious people, no doubt they loved the person they considered their son, loved him/her dearly as he/she developed during the different phases of childhood and as most parents do, did the best they could, for the people they are.
I think Leelah Alcorn’s suicide was a tragic mistake, and a self-centered one in which Leelah wasn’t thinking clearly. There were other alternatives, but her impatience got the better hand (almost a hallmark of adolescence). Kids at school were supportive even if parents weren’t, and she would have been 18 this year, could have gotten a job and supported herself, so there was an out. But from reading the “suicide note” it also appeared that Leelah wasn’t prepared to even think about what her decision would cost in so many ways.
We’ve criticized the “ammo-sexuals” for allowing children to handle and use guns at an early age (something I wouldn’t do). Yet, when parents of a 6 yr old, because of something parents see fixated in the child’s mind, begin transitioning that child from female to male, I have to say, “Whoa!”. This isn’t a decision for a 6 yr old child to make—the parents made it for her.
When my g-grandson was 2, he would, from time to time, say that he was a girl. He also stated, not just recently, at 4, that he wanted to marry me when he grows up. At this point, he’s also not afraid to get into the “I hate you”/”I love you” terms as well. Children get confused, easily, and pick up clues from parents, their foremost caregivers. He doesn’t like discipline, as most kids don’t, such as picking up his room, being on time, etc, but he does it, is OK with it. As he travels childhood, I have no idea how he will continue to view the world and how his contacts outside this home—with others, on the internet, with popular culture, etc—will affect him. No parent does, but we hope what we consider “good discipline” will prevail to keep him or her from harm. But most of us do the best we can when conflicts arise, and esp when the wants of the children contrast with our own values. Taking a concrete position is not my style, either, unless a child exhibits disruptive/self-endangering behavior, and, it just makes issues more contentious, and open lines of communication with a child are so very important, practiced with love and understanding.
When I was 17, I made an important decision for which I was not prepared (coupled with a father and stepmother anxious enough to get rid of me) and a short 3 yrs later, was a single mother with 2 children, divorced, with no place to go but enough skills to at least get a job to support them. It’s not a road I encourage others to follow, either. In my mind, I was “in love” and that was all that mattered, and it changed my life completely, at a time when I should have been thinking of college and preparing myself for adulthood. Even so, I loved my sons dearly and tried to guide them as well as I could, both with success and failure. I was a “liberal” parent with liberal friends living in communities, unfortunately, where education wasn’t always valued and even jobs sometimes hard to find, and kids were sometimes as troubled as their own parents. In a way, they were caught between 2 worlds.
Why do we have parents if children are able to make their own absolute decisions at any stage of their childhood? This will always be a conundrum when kids are being supported by us in every way—socially, economically, and emotionally—and not in a position to be on their own. We don’t allow a child to leave home because they simply disagree with us; we don’t allow them to place their hand on a hot stove just because they want to experience it. Yes, they have minds of their own and as they begin to think more for themselves, which should always be encouraged and spoken about, they sort out the kinds of values they pick up not just from us, but from others, and that’s a lifelong process and we hopefully give them the tools to do that in a good way.
It’s always been a dilemma and always will be, but it also works itself out over time with more success than not.

I see the same kind of “bad guy” catalog of his offenses that we’ve seen in other cases (and I agree that he doesn’t sound like a nice guy). I would expect they want ID or address information in case something comes up regarding the stray. Medical issues (like rabies possibly), conflict regarding the animal actually being a stray*, etc. etc.
* - People are dicks enough that they would kidnap an animal and then claim it trespassed or was otherwise a stray in order to “get” at someone. Just look at the examples of people murdering or mutilating pets in that regard.

However, this may further highlight the problem of the police overreaction (and subsequent lack of will to bring such cases to the court, regardless of the cop’s or the victim’s race).
Well, there’s some good news on that score:
The shooting is being investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation, a division of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. The findings will be turned over to the Houston County District Attorney’s Office.
It would be better if the findings were made public and if prosecution was handled by a state agency, but at least its being investigated at the state level. But then again, this is Alabama so YMMV on how much such an investigation is worth.

Unless he was reaching for the cop’s gun. Frankly, the posted article doesn’t contain enough info to make a decision.
But sick as it is to say, I’m glad the guy who got killed in this case was white. It means his death won’t increase racial tensions that are already high.
Law enforcement is starting the new year off on a great footing. Killing yet another unarmed person, with scant information about the situation. Are there no less lethal means of handling disputes? As you say, this situation didn’t involve a person of color, and it goes against the right wing talking points given that the victim here was white, a sovereign citizen, and sovereign citizens have an anti-law enforcement bent that is well established and with considerable precedent for violence against law enforcement.

The problem with that in the case we were talking about is that ‘sovereign citizens’ have a particularly deadly belief in “pew pew pew Murica”, one that has translated many times into the murder of law enforcement officers. The Dothan cops who responded in this case knew they were dealing with someone like that by the time shots were fired, and that likely lead them to see Lawrence as dangerous.

The problem is that it’s all speculation. We know of a case of a cop shooting an unarmed teen in Alabama from a coupla years ago. The cop was black, the teen was white. Yet the jury failed to indict the cop. In Alabama. What must a cop do to get indicted, ever, if he can’t get indicted under such circumstances?

Putin’s got a brand new shill:
Oliver Stone meets toppled Ukrainian president and accuses CIA of sparking coup
American film director and Pentagon critic Oliver Stone has announced he is shooting a documentary on Ukraine’s revolution arguing the CIA instigated the coup that toppled pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych.
“It’s America’s soft power technique called ‘Regime Change 101,” Stone said of the deposition of Yanukovych in February following months of protests, calling the former Ukrainian leader the “legitimate President of Ukraine”.
“Details to follow in the documentary, but it seems clear that the so-called ‘shooters’ who killed 14 policemen, wounded some 85, and killed 45 protesting civilians, were outside third party agitators,” Stone wrote on his Facebook page, posting photos of him laughing side-by-side with Yanukovych in Moscow.
“Many witnesses, including Yanukovych and police officials, believe these foreign elements were introduced by pro-Western factions - with CIA fingerprints on it,” the W director added.
In his lengthy post the director took a swipe at “Western media” for presenting the Yanukovych government as the aggressor in Ukraine’s Maidan revolution and said “the truth is not being aired in the West”.

I’ve posted before, I was in that Cincinnati Who crowd. I can attest to exactly what you are saying. And, I think I went through at least 4 different personal reactions from that show based on what part I saw or heard before, during and after the show.
I went from being a bit scared by the crowd, to really enjoying the show, to then finding out on the way home what happened not knowing before or during the show. And the fourth reaction was years later reading how close I was to the deaths.
*At this level and the money spent and made, all 4 of the NCAA football playoff teams are pro teams. They just happen to be operated on a college campus.

Well considering how we have learned to trust the police above all else these days…. *cough* What sounds like a good law may or may not work out well at all. How intimidating would it be for a cop to tell you allow the search/cooperate/put down that camera or they will order your guns taken away? Sometimes with only judicial second stringer oversight.
How this law works will be directly proportionate to the quality of the police officer involved every time. Hmmm.
This bill would authorize a court to issue a temporary emergency gun violence restraining order if a law enforcement officer asserts and a judicial officer finds that there is reasonable cause to believe that the subject of the petition poses an immediate and present danger of causing personal injury…
…The bill would require the presiding judge of the superior court of each county to designate at least one judge, commissioner, or referee who is required to be reasonably available to issue temporary emergency gun violence restraining orders when the court is not in session.

“…OK, so we have a year of 31,558,149 seconds. If we divide that by 86,164 seconds/day we get 366.256 days per year.
Wait, that doesn’t sound right. You’ve always read it’s 365.25 days per year, right? But that first number, 366.256, is a year in sidereal days. In solar days, you divide the seconds in a year by 86,400 to get 365.256 days.
Phew! That number sounds right. But really, both numbers are right. It just depends on what unit you use. It’s like saying something is 1 inch long, and it’s also 2.54 centimeters long. Both are correct.
Having said all that, I have to admit that the 365.25 number is not really correct. It’s a cheat. That’s really using a mean or average solar day. The Sun is not a point source, it’s a disk, so you have to measure a solar day using the center of the Sun, correcting for the differences in Earth’s motion as it orbits the Sun (because it’s not really a circle, it’s an ellipse) and and and. In the end, the solar day is really just an average version of the day, because the actual length of the day changes every, um, day…”

And there is the real reason why so many have such concern about the proliferation of guns in this country.
People do dumb shit with guns. Indisputable fact.

I’m going to have to look at it a little more closely (this isn’t a good day for legalese), but it doesn’t go into effect until 2016, and it requires a third party (special master) to accompany a police officer when a warrant is served. That second might tend to discourage cowboy antics.

So NYPD safely cuts arrests by two-thirds, therefore proving that their primary job function is just public intimidation and revenue generation. I bet conservatives are going to be pissed that their “nanny” revenue collectors aren’t “protecting” them and citing them for not wearing a seatbelt.
And therefore, they should carry a loaded gun with them, at all times especially grocery shopping, with 2yr olds around, to fight against that gubmint policing “tyranny”.
Oh that’s right, they’re not scared of the police, of which they unquestionably support, just scared of the “Feds” … and those colored “thugs”.

This is what I am still unsure about. Did she have the purse in the front of the cart like so many women do or was it on her shoulder?
In the case of the former, who would leave a purse in the front of a cart with a firearm in it? Women, including me, often turn away from the cart, take a small step to get something off the shelf. At that point the purse is not in view and criminals have been known to take wallets and checkbooks at that point.

re: #332 Iwouldprefernotto
She is 100% responsible for her own death.
I think not. I think she shares responsibility with the entire culture in America that thinks it is okay to sacrifice thousands of human beings every year to guns.
The culture that treats guns as religious objects, that considers a made-up and foolish ‘right’ to be so sacred that it must be appeased with tens of thousands of killed and injured every year, at an incalculable cost in both money and human suffering. That is willing to accept any number of innocent deaths and lives forever ruined, any horror, as long as a minority of people get to cuddle guns. That perpetuates a culture of fear and swaggering, frontier stupidity that glorifies people who carry lethal weapons at all times for their own entertainment, despite the greatly increased risk to themselves and everyone else.
As that article says, these people in their little town aren’t violent. They aren’t scared of crime. They just carry guns. They like it. It’s fun. It entertains them. And if a few people die, and if a few kids grow up without parents or brothers or sisters, that’s okay. Because it’s fun. It’s their right.
Just like in America as a whole. Guns are awesome. They’re your right. And if people die here and there because people think shooting each other is ‘unavoidable’, if kids shoot each other by accident or in fits of teenage angst, and if every so often some whackjob kills twenty first graders, that’s okay too. It’s totally worth it. After all, every once in a blue moon an armed confrontation might not involve a good guy getting shot. And it’s vitally important that people carry guns, and own guns, and consider guns as an acceptable manner of resolving disputes. Because then they feel safe.

I cannot help you there. That weirds me out pretty badly, too. I live in one of the cities that perennially tops the most dangerous/most crime ridden lists. I’ve had cars broken into, neighbors mugged outside my apartment building, police shootings down the block. I even periodically have reason to be in the rough parts of town.
I thought really hard about trying to get a CCW when I first moved here. California law makes them basically impossible to get, but even without that, when I really did the math, the answer was carrying the gun was most dangerous to me. Either by accidentally shooting myself or having someone snag the gun and using it against me. In nearly a decade of living here, I have been in zero situations where a gun would have been handy.
I think my Sheriff and the other local Sheriffs all have the correct policy of denying CCW permit applications. But it isn’t nearly enough. There are too many guns out there.

She would be with the gun fetishists. A couple of days ago a woman carrying a loaded gun in a fanny pack dropped the pack. The gun went off and shot her husband in the arm.Someone else could have been killed. Aside from the fact that she didn’t know what the hell she was doing, feeling that you need to carry a gun here in Glendora (Where the incident occurred) is the height of paranoia. It’s probably one of the safest, most quiet towns in the country. Crime is so low here that the cops characterize illegal parking as “A Glendora felony.” Fucking idiots are inevitable, fucking idiots with firearms is an imposition by our bought and paid for lawmakers.

I do too.
I high school when the summer when it was hot outside, we’d leave the windows rolled down when the car was parked in the driveway or garage. When we moved to Indiana, my best friend always laughed at me.
I automatically swiped my hand across the lock as I closed the car door. It was an automatic, one fluid movement, conditioned behavior.
Now we have the clicker to lock the car.
which brings me to another point.
Now we have cars that lock automatically have the car has been moving forward for several feet. This really scares me.
I still lock my car in a reverse of the above motion.
If a criminal is going to commit the crime, it will be while I am putting my seatbelt on or before I’ve put the car in “drive”. NOT WHILE I’M DRIVING THE CAR.

One state supreme court has ruled the second amendment applies to clubs and knives. Once that clears (I hope) the nonsensical laws that make felonies of carrying a simple walking cane for self defense purposes will let a lot of us ponder choices perhaps more helpful overall and certainly less dangerous than firearms. I believe the lock when in drive (or you hit a threshold speed) is for protection against the stoplight hijacker scenario. I have mixed feelings about that ruling. As much as it allows me to have better options for my personal security, I think there is a public safety argument there. Basically, I’m not sure what the right answer is. A ruling that lets me carry a folding baton also lets the Hell’s Angels carry worn out motorcycle chains. OTOH, I had to go back to the 60s for an example like that, since all the gangs around here have upgraded to handguns in the last 50 years, and that’s definitely worse.

Those were my favorites as well. So much fun to make, too.

“Influenced by alchemists, kabbalists, and Emanuel Swedenborg, Blake became interested in sexual techniques in order to achieve spiritual vision… . [This book] bravely explores the ‘sexual-spiritual underworld’ of this great poet and artist, drawing on newly uncovered archives and photographic techniques that reveal the extreme eroticism of Blake’s drawings before they were censored… . A fascinating history of both the erotic and the occult. The prose is fast-paced and accessible, and the author thoroughly reanimates her subject’s extraordinarily unorthodox ideals of sexuality.” (Elizabeth Scott-Baumann, The Sunday Times)

re: #394 The Vicious Babushka
LOL I’d go for “fun & funky” but my daughter is more “precious & elegant”
Also this will provoke the inevitable question MOM YOU USED TO KNIT STUFF ALL THE TIME, WHY DIDN’T YOU MAKE THIS?
LOL that was before I started working and the Internet was invented. :)
Tell her you work in IT and outsourcing is contagious…

I feel the need to respond to this to point out that Leelah’s parents were not only unsupportive but were taking her to therapists in an effort to convince her she was wrong about her feelings.
I think most of us agree that’s wrong when it is being done by parents to their gay children, and it’s just as wrong when it’s being done to a transgendered child. We aren’t talking a 6 year old who “doesn’t understand” the world, we are talking a 17 year old who, as you said, would have been a legal adult in a year.
Does it make harassing the family right? Of course not. But let’s not pretend that they weren’t being at best unsupportive. I would call this abuse, just like I would consider it abuse for a Christian family to force a gay minor into conversion therapy.
