He’s figured out a few things that worked well for him, and he can do those really well, but put him in a new situation, and that simple repertoire is all he’s got. He literally used the same techniques to get people to invest in excess casino capacity in New Jersey; to get people to pay ‘tuition’ in Trump University; to get elected President; and most recently to try to pass the AHCA.

A few years back I read a research report that found that when many non-White Americans look at us, they’re not really looking at individual characteristics. The study was related to whether White Americans could give accurate descriptions of blacks who commit crimes when they’re at the locations where the crimes take place. The study’s results showed a majority of them can’t distinguish between one black person [in that respect (crime)] and another.

Rep. Waters is a child of Jim Crow and the Civil Rights Era, as am I, and one thing our parents emphasized as we were growing up was the value of having a good education. My parents always said, “People can take a lot of things away from you, but what they can’t take is your knowledge.”

Rep. Waters is way stronger than O’Reilly, and it’s very likely she’s a lot smarter. Some Americans don’t understand that when you were black and growing up, or living, in 1940s, 50s, and 60s, America, you fought for every step forward you took, and an education beyond high school was one of those steps you worked hard to acquire. Also, when a black person went to college during the aforementioned years, it wasn’t simply one’s family one was afraid of disappointing, it was the entire community, so that left you no other option than to succeed.

As you guys know, I write the Small Business newsletter my boss publishes for Fairfax County’s Small Business Commision and apparently the Trump admin is planning to cut 43 mill from the Small Business Administration which includes a lot of programs that help prospective business owners.

I’m more in the camp of just letting him rant, nodding and smiling where necessary, and then moving on to the next topic. The nice thing about my folks is that they never dwell on political rants for long. It’s usually once or maybe twice a visit, and then it’s all over and we can talk basketball or cars or whatever cute thing the fishspawn are up to.

I’ve heard that story too! And yes, Ivana is an expert skier, though her “championship” status is in question. Supposedly she was an alternate for Downhill and Slalom in the 1972 Olympics for the Czechoslovak ski team, though this is in dispute.

Anybody not familiar with Aspen, the ski area right in town has no beginner trails, you have to go to Buttermilk a few miles out of the downtown area for green runs. You have to kind of know what you’re doing on skis to ski Aspen Mountain.

I love Aspen Mountain as a place to ski. So oddly pitched and steep. And there’s nothing like going highway speeds in the morning down Copper Bowl 3,000 vertical feet down!

Fuckface Von Clownstick skied this mountain without getting injured many years ago.

Reminds me of a friend of mine from college. His family are Conservative - so much so that when he came out to them, his brother quoted the whole Leviticus ‘Worthy of death’ thing to him. He tied himself to the GOP, and remains there even as they increasingly make it plain they don’t want him. Indeed, his family doesn’t want him either - he’s basically paid from the family fortune to keep his distance. And he’s old (for his age) and sick, so he’s not going to strike out on his own at 59.

I get the same feeling about his Republicanism as I got from DF. Basically, they can spout the Free Market jargon, and rattle on about individual responsibility, but it feels more like it’s coming from being a team player, rather than a true believer.

I think DF flirted with being something other than a kneejerk Republican, but it was too much work, and would require too much courage.

I can tell you this much Charles but when my mom’s one grandfather died at the age of 62. He was very healthy outside of his lungs. I’ve talked about this before but I don’t want the mines back. The mines kill. I have no doubt that if not for the mines, my great grandfather would have lived a long life. He didn’t work in the mines because he loved coal and the mines. It was a job that he did to provide for his family and jobs were very limited to men of his background. I’m proud of him for his work ethic but the coal mines took him and so many other men like him far too young.

Some people take what their ancestors experienced and use it to tell other groups to shut up. I choose to use it as perspective. I come from a Catholic family and am what one would call “white ethnic”, I’ve never experienced discrimination for that. I know that life wasn’t easy for my ancestors but I do two things A) I don’t use what they encountered to miminize the suffering of others, that is while what happened to the Irish in Famine era Ireland infuriates me, the “Irish slaves” bs done every St. Paddy’s Day infuriates me and B) I choose to be empathetic to today’s immigrants because I know full well they have the same hopes and dreams for their families that mine did.

As an Arctic researcher, I’m used to gaps in data. Just over 1% of US Arctic waters have been surveyed to modern standards. In truth, some of the maps we use today haven’t been updated since the second world war. Navigating uncharted waters can prove difficult, but it comes with the territory of working in such a remote part of the world.

Over the past two months though, I’ve been navigating a different type of uncharted territory: the deleting of what little data we have by the Trump administration.

At first, the distress flare of lost data came as a surge of defunct links on 21 January. The US National Strategy for the Arctic, the Implementation Plan for the Strategy, and the report on our progress all gone within a matter of minutes. As I watched more and more links turned red, I frantically combed the internet for archived versions of our country’s most important polar policies.

I had no idea then that this disappearing act had just begun.

Since January, the surge has transformed into a slow, incessant march of deleting datasets, webpages and policies about the Arctic. I now come to expect a weekly email request to replace invalid citations, hoping that someone had the foresight to download statistics about Arctic permafrost thaw or renewable energy in advance of the purge.

Like many others I came to believe DF was part of a very dysfunctional family. He could not break away from his fathers influence.

On the positive side, I’ve always felt DF was extremely knowledgeable in military history and weaponry. He was always able to provide detailed information about very obscure battles and unusual weapons.

I always thought he should build on this knowledge and get a degree(s) in History and become a college/military school professor. He seemed to be wasting his time selling corporate training sessions.
