Paywalled. How can Desantis force this? Is he going to pass some bullshit law that prevents Cruise operators from only allowing vaccinated people.

I had to google to find out that TDAP (also known as DTaP) is diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough.

“DeSantis sued the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last month, asking a judge to force the agency to drop its cruise safety requirements and allow cruises to begin immediately. The judge instead sent the case to mediation, which begins Thursday.”

So i’m not celebrating until they drag Mrs. Netanyahu (commonly referred to as “Miss Piggy” in Israel, a nickname given to her less because of her weight and more because of her self-centered, scream-and-hit-everything-around-her-when-she’s-not-happy attitude) out of the PM’s residence in Balfour, screaming at the top of her voice…

It is the merry month of May,
when everything is cold and grey,
the rain is dripping from the trees
and life is like a long disease,

the storm clouds hover round like ghouls,
the birds all sing, because they’re fools,
and beds of optimistic flowers
are beaten down by thunder showers,

under a weak and watery sun
nothing seems to be much fun—
exciting as a piece of string,
this is the marvellous British Spring!

Regarding Israel’s latest political developments, I wanna follow up on a matter brought up in the previous thread (warning: long post follows):
While it’s true that Naftali Bennet will apparently serve as PM if the “unity and change” government succeeds by the end of the week, he’ll be doing so as part of a government that has most of the Israeli right enraged and with relatively little influence. While PMs serve for 4 years in total, the unity agreement has him serving first for two before Yair Lapid of the left-center Yesh Atid party replaces him for the next two years.
More importantly, the makeup of the upcoming government gives a majority of ministers to the left-centrist party, a minority to the hardcore Israeli left parties (Labor and Meretz) and a minority to Bennet’s right-wing party.
Meaning that the actual power he has in office when it comes to right-wing policies is very limited, especially since the next defense minister (traditionally the second-most important person after the PM) is gonna be the left-wing Benny Gantz, who was already the defense minister as part of Bibi’s old unity government (Bibi effectively undid the unity government agreement and screwed him and - in an ironic twist- in doing so, himself).
On top of that, a sizable chunk of the Israeli right is furious with Bennet for even joining the unity government. To make a long political story short, the moment the next elections take place in Israel, regardless of anything else - Bennet will almost certainly be wiped out electorally.
So sure, he’s gonna be PM - but it’ll be as a very limited and centralistic PM. And in doing it as he did, it cost him just about everything he had and could ever have in the future.

You have no idea.
I don’t think there are words to do justice to just how much the leaders of Israel’s other right-wing parties despise Netanyahu by now.
In Bennet’s case, the history predates the politics to when he worked in the PM bureau almost a decade ago, if not earlier. And it’s ugly. Bibi worried that he might usurp him politically one day, and hurt him at numerous levels and opportunities. On top of that, Mrs. Netanyahu (who isn’t supposed to have any actual power or influence but apparently does to a degree due to reasons that would take an obscene amount of time to explain) targeted him and his wife professionally AND personally.
The amount of bad blood between Bennet and the Netanyahus could paint the entirety of the Red Sea in a manner fitting its name.

Counter-terrorism expert combats vaccine misinformation (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald

As far as Colorado is concerned, it is dealing with information warfare over the vaccine, so they need an intelligence expert to deal with it.

A February poll commissioned by the state asked people who were either on the fence about the vaccine or opposed to receiving it what information they had seen that made them less likely to want to get vaccinated. Of the group, 45% said they had heard the vaccines were unsafe; 12% said they had heard the vaccines have caused deaths; and 8% said they had heard the vaccines contain microchips or were being used to control the population.

(The vaccines, though they have side effects that can be unpleasant, are overwhelmingly safe, and there is a robust monitoring system to look for dangerous side effects. They do not contain microchips, and videos that purport to show magnets sticking to people’s arms at their injection sites are fake.)

Fighting on the information battlefield is Watts’ turf. After graduating from West Point, he served in the U.S. Army as an infantry officer. Later came stints back at West Point at the Combating Terrorism Center and in the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

He’s tracked Al Qaeda and the Islamic State. He’s examined Russian disinformation. That’s him in 2019 testifying before a U.S. House committee on “deepfake” videos.

I once, with friends, found a bunch of rifles tied in a bag beside a now-defunct garage. I’ve always kind of assumed they were part of a robbery or some sort of mischief, because I just couldn’t see someone deciding to bag up some old long guns and drop them at the side of a garage. Probably thrown there from the road above and didn’t realize it was the kind of place a bunch of kids were going to be in not that long after.

It wasn’t the likely loss in the courts over this BS, because wingnuts like DeSenseless will fight with everything down to their very eyeteeth to keep such stupid fights going in the vain hope that a court somewhere down the line will side with them.

Answer’s simple: Cruise lines go to more places than FL, places that require proof of vaccination just to allow people to step off the ship. There’s every possibility that such ports would simply refuse to allow cruise ships to dock, since the hassle of processing such passengers would slow disembarkation and lead to all sorts of headaches when the plague rats raised a stink about being forced to return to the ship.

53
Targetpractice  May 30, 2021 • 1:55:42pm

Ron made the classic wingnut mistake: Assuming that he had way more leverage than he really did. The assumption seems to have been that cruise lines would be so desperate to get back into business after CV that they couldn’t afford to pull ships from FL ports, so they’d be forced to bend to his will and obey his asinine law.

But the reality was the exact opposite, FL ports can’t afford to lose those cruise ships and the cash flow that comes with supporting them, so the lines were the ones with the leverage in this scenario. Having tens of thousands of Floridians rendered jobless just over a year before his reelection bid would not be a good thing for Ron, no matter how much noise he made about it being Biden’s “fault.”

I’ve never been on a cruise, so I have no experiential basis for my opinion of various cruise lines.

But Norwegian Cruise line sponsors a lot of PBS programming, and they’ve had some wonderful commercials throughout the pandemic and free on-line virtual cruises “until we can all be together again in person.”

I think he forgot about the cruise lines when he was making his “principled stand,” and then thought (correctly) that backing down would be a sign of weakness.

Carnival, which owns a bunch of cruise lines had talked about requiring a 95% vaccination rate (no, I have no idea how they came up with that ), but they’re the only ones, and I don’t think it would fly with their passenger base.

If FL made it necessary for cruise lines to find other home ports, many of their neighbors (US states and Caribbean countries) would leap at the opportunity to welcome them.

I’m not looking forward to the cruise ships returning to SE Alaska. They’ll be back in early July. No matter what precautions the cruise lines take to prevent Covid 19 from boarding their ships the disease will find away. I think it’s only a matter of time until another plague ship incident occurs, at which point the cruise line industry will basically be living on borrowed time. No matter how careful they are in screening passengers and crew, somebody’s going to get aboard who’s sick but not symptomatic and then it will be a ticking time bomb.

Wingnuts only respect the free market when it goes their way. When the free market tells them to pound sand, then it’s all part of some nefarious scheme to bring about “SOCIALISM!!!!” *thunder clap*

Cruise ships allow DeSantis to “force” them to take on unvaccinated passengers. I’m pretty sure that cruise ships could refuse to put their workers and passengers at risk. Stop acting as if Republicans are dictators. Big businesses like cruises could push back but choose not to do so.

Because they just “know” that a military coup would lead to a MAGA-led government that would totally jail and execute all the politicians and powerful people that they disagree with, rather than a bunch of generals with the manpower to remove a duly elected government just deciding that things would be much better if they had total and uncontested power instead.

EU Commission calls on UK to ditch ideology over Northern Ireland protocol

The DUP is calling for the protocol to be scrapped, and Poots told Marr the checks were “doing demonstrable harm to every individual in Northern Ireland” and “having a devastating impact”, agreeing the violence could get worse as summer and the perennially tense marching season approaches.

I know of deer season, and duck season, even Christmas season… but little did I know there was a “marching” season.

New DUP leader Edwin Poots accuses EU of using Northern Ireland as a ‘plaything’ to punish the UK as Brussels chief insists Brexit protocol will NOT be axed

However, Mr Poots responded by saying he wanted to see a permanent solution.

‘The permanent solution is to take the barriers away between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and provide security in terms of the single market that goods that are entering the European Union from Great Britain have the appropriate checks,’ he said.

To be clear, what Poots is saying in that last blurb is that he wants a hard border between NI and RoI.

This of course is exactly what Sinn Fein does not want. It’s not what the RoI wants either.

So combine that with Poots warning about “marching season”, and the DUP leader is going all hard-line: if he doesn’t get his way, they will riot.

Though it disturbs me that the Dems’ anthem still seems to be “we’re not going to take this and if the Republicans don’t play by the rules this time, well, by golly we’ll be pretty ticked off I tell ya.” I feel like they don’t understand how inaction is going to breed cynicism in their party while the other party simply rolls on amalgamating power.

re: #63 Targetpractice

I think it’s only a matter of time until another plague ship incident occurs, at which point the cruise line industry will basically be living on borrowed time. No matter how careful they are in screening passengers and crew, somebody’s going to get aboard who’s sick but not symptomatic and then it will be a ticking time bomb.

I am late to this discussion, but you’re forgetting that the vaccine protects people from the asymptomatic as well as the symptomatic. It also keeps someone with the vaccine and a reinfection (already rare) from infecting other people.

Also, cruise ships are not “plague ships” — there’s no reason to think any of them spread covid to places it hadn’t previously been, and it won’t be doing it in the future, because covid is already everywhere. They are no more dangerous than nursing homes or college dormitories, and we’re not going to do away with them. (Do you remember the recent case of the employee who spread covid through the nursing home where she worked? Infected very few, most asymptomatic, a few had mild symptoms. No hospitalizations, no deaths. Because. they. had. all. been. vaccinated.)

re: #76 Patricia Kayden

Cruise ships allow DeSantis to “force” them to take on unvaccinated passengers. I’m pretty sure that cruise ships could refuse to put their workers and passengers at risk.

Not. gonna. happen. He gives in or they go.

It was a lovely 94 degrees today. I was going to go for a short 20 mile bike ride but I noticed the through axle hub was falling out of the front fork. They apparently forgot to install the bolt that holds it in place or didn’t tighten it and it fell out. Looking at the picture of the bike when I brought it home I see the bolt is missing there. I did ride 12 miles in Nevada City the day before. The business is closed on weekends or I’d drive the 4 hour round trip to Grass Valley to pick it up.

E-bikes are fun. My street has a 10% slope and it climbs the hill with just a tiny bit more effort on my part than level ground. This 67 lb fat-tire bike is a monster to control and I have a lot to learn about handling it in tight spaces and just turning in general. So far my turning radius is that of an old long-bed pickup. I don’t remember having this trouble on my 10-speed… 48 years ago. It will take a while but I will eventually go off-road then to easier single track trails and finally have the skill set to go bike packing in the mountains.

ETTC 35 years to 48 years, subtraction is hrad.

re: #102 Barefoot Grin

Though it disturbs me that the Dems’ anthem still seems to be “we’re not going to take this and if the Republicans don’t play by the rules this time, well, by golly we’ll be pretty ticked off I tell ya.” I feel like they don’t understand how inaction is going to breed cynicism in their party while the other party simply rolls on amalgamating power.

I know it feels like much longer, but Biden has been in office for only four months. The rescue plan and getting his people in place (in the face of repug obstructionism) took up most of this. We need to get over deciding everything is lost with every setback.

Biden said during his speech that he carries a card with him every day, and on it, the number of American service members killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He said he started doing this when he served as vice president under Barack Obama. Today, it reads 7,036. “It’s not an approximation,” Biden said.

Emphasis mine. It is so good to have an adult president again.

Eurythmics, Annie Lennox, Dave Stewart - 17 Again (Official Video)

We were discussing meeting in St. Louis or Springfield Ill (sort of halfway for each) earlier.

I have no clue where this will end up but I’m looking forward to walking hand in hand with her to find out.

The flag on the right (black and red vertical stripes with the quiver of arrows and a yoke) is a Falange/Franco flag called the FE-JONS. (Falange Española de las Juntas de Ofensiva Nacional-Sindicalista a fascist group).

Another hit piece written by Seung Min Kim. I’m not sure what the WaPo thought that they were hiring. But I suspect that it was not what they ended up with.
